Sam Lago was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but moved 3 years later, after his mother died, to New York City, New York. There, his father took a job at a museum, acting as a tour guide, while Sam underwent the standard K-12 education, discovering that he was terrible at sports, but was more of a fast learner. He enjoyed chess, but started competitive gaming before he became great at chess. Soon, he started competing in a few after-school gaming tournaments, but never won any.
