  1. After the first log, the compass was leading him on. It obviously didn't have a specific location in mind, but instead seemed to serve as a guide to pointing out what sort of features might have hidden materials. Luckily they weren't universally as disgusting as the first one, but it was a common feature that there were a bit off the beaten path, and half-hidden. A spot along the trail had led to a small clearing with some interesting but ultimately worthless flowers (well, they were quite pretty, and some had disappeared into his inventory). So Hanzoku continued on and followed the <&
  2. A few minutes later, Hanzoku crawled out of the other end of the log. His armor was smeared with moss stains, and with a grunt he flicked a slug from one of his pauldrons and looked at the spider hanging from the remains of its web in front of his face in its eight beady eyes. "You aren't covered by safe zone rules. You have five seconds to scram before I squash you." The spider considered the offer and opened its legs, free-falling to the ground and scurrying back into the log to build its web again. Meanwhile, Hanzoku rubs gloved hands vigorously over his face and through his hair to ge
  3. Once the adventurer left the clearing, Giovanna let out the breath she was holding. "And this is why I prefer plants." she muttered. Adventurers were all weird, but this was one was definitely pushing the boundaries. Once he left the clearing, Hanzoku discovered the item (labeled a <<Cursed Compass>> on his HUD - not at all ominous, that) had stabilized, and now was indicting a direction due east. Of course, in a thick forest, due east was anything but, as he followed the trails as much as possible while keeping an eye out for anything worth trying to collect. He noticed
  4. "Um... no." Giovanna said after a moment. "Does it whisper eldritch lore in your mind and cause you to go insane?" he continued, enjoying the process. "Not that I've ever noticed... though some people say that it does whisper to them, but they otherwise seemed well adjusted." "Well, what does it do? Please tell me that touching it with your bare skin causes horrific mutations?" he asked hopefully. She eyed him warily now. "No. Look, they're jagged shards about as big as my hand, and mostly they glow. Ominously, if you want to look at it that way. They're a vital component t
  5. "So, it appears you've found me," she comments, though not unkindly. "I tend to move around quite a lot, but someone always finds me. I suppose you are looking for some herbs?" "You're fairly well known, and you're considered a skilled trainer - why by the by, is what I'm looking for. No offense to your herbs, but I don't think alchemy is my speed." "Most simply expect me to forage their materials for them, but few truly care about the process itself. You surprise me." Digging into the pocket of her dress, Giovanna draws out a small compass, then offers it to you. "You may borrow m
  6. The trail lead into the edge of the forest, and the light quickly failed as the trees closed in around him, the path flanked on both sides by thick underbrush that had no business growing with so little light available from the trees looming above. The fighter kept his hand resting on the hilt of his sword as he made his way down the path. This should be a safe zone, but if there were ever woods that were creepy and ominous, these were certainly them. A warm glow appeared faintly in the distance, and Hanzoku continued to push forward. The trail opened into a clearing lit by the warm glow
  7. Hanzoku was making his way through the central square of the Town of Beginnings, heading for the outskirts for another round of trying to collect a Demonic Shard for Giovanna when a voice rang out behind him. "You there! Stop, please!" The man exclaimed from a distance, approaching rapidly with long, purposeful strides. "Pardon me, but I am in need of some assistance, and you appear quite capable." Having lived in the Town for so long, the new adventurer knew the man by sight, but this is the first time that this NPC has interacted with him - perhaps because he now properly looks like an
  8. Hanzoku emerged from the hovel he has been squatting in for the last two years and cricked his neck left and right. With a thought, he summoned his equipment, taking comfort once again in no longer being a helpless peasant, but becoming someone taking his fate into his own hands. And part of that fate was doing something to earn a living. He'd asked around and gathered information, and it boiled down to two things - to earn money, you needed to either kill mobs and loot them (something he was planning on doing... soon. Ish.) Or you needed to earn a merchant's license so you can make and sell e
  9. Hanzoku receives the bundle of items and runs a finger reverently over the gleaming edge of the sword, feeling the tingle that was all the system would transmit as the skin parts and the data underneath is visible for a moment before the mark fades away again. "Truly a master's craftmanship. Well, even if you won't accept payment, I'll be sure to spread word of your shop." With a touch, he accepts the trade offer and equips the gear, the system phasing in the armor around his body, the sword sheathed at his side and the shield comfortably slung over his shoulder. The cuirass should hang h
  10. Hanzoku is still shaking off the disorientation from teleporting from one floor to another in rapid succession when he enters The Evening Star. Faced with a friendly shop cat, he spends a few minutes scratching the cat behind his ears and scratching down the length of his spine, taking the finger nibbling in good humor. Having rendered suitable tribute to the feline overlord of the shop, the newbie pulls a hand-written list from his pocket and compares it to the shop’s inventory. After a few moments, he picks out a number of trinkets and places them by the cat’s paws.
  11. The man who pushes through the doors doesn't look like he belongs there. Dressed in the simple peasant clothes all the users started the game in, it was a clear sign that if he stepped one foot outside the safe zone of the city, half of the mobs in the zone would immediately aggro on him and stampede over to commit violent slaughter. It was that very helplessness that he was looking to fix, one purchase at a time. "Hey, is the blacksmith in?" he shouts out over the hammering and din of the shop. He doesn't know if the owner is here or even heard him, but he has time. Looking around, he sp
