(SP-F2) A Time to Train - The Feel of a Weapon Redux - COMPLETE!

Recommended Posts

As Brax relaxed a bit after his last round of training, he took a look at his newly acquired weapon, his first moment since he had it commissioned.  He had never truly had something crafted especially for him, not that he could recall.  Back at Berringer's, he'd had things of his own, books and trinkets that the doctors allowed him to hang onto, but while some of the older patients had macaroni diagrams from their grandkids, or loved ones making art in the common room for those on the outside, since he had no one, he had never received such things.  It was...strange.  But in a good way, he supposed.  Having indulged his fascination enough, he sheathed the giant axe, and headed out for more training, his weapon seemingly itching for blood.

His next fight was close at hand.  A bat, presumably from a nearby cave, had made it's way into the forests where he was training.  Seeing the large, bloodsucking creature, he made a swipe with his Whirlwind attack while it's back was turned.  A high pitched shriek burst forth from the beast, unhappy to be disturbed.  It turned to strike back, but Brax had already retreated, expecting the counterpunch.  The creature was more at home in the darkness of a cave than the bright greenery of the forest, and it showed.

Continuing his dance with the bat, Brax felt the Epitaph guide his feet.  His quick footwork managed to avoid another clumsy blow by the confused creature, and he chose that moment to strike, the Veterans knowledge of his axe giving him preternatural knowledge of the enemies weak points.  His Whirlwind sailed through the air, and as it connected, the two hits opened up the beast into a shower of pixels.  In it's place, another Potion of Strength and some materials were left, which Brax collected.

Brax took a moment to resurvey the battlefield, eyes keen for anything he might have missed.  Having just started his opportunities to gather snowflakes for the Winter Event, he wanted to leave no stone unturned.  He found success, when his gaze fell upon a few drops of blood from the bat, which he funneled into an empty potion vial.  'Not the best quality,' he thought, 'but someone should be able to make use of it.

Continuing on, he encountered another beast, this time a Nepent, and what a Nepent it was.  Big, snarling, with angry black eyes and a wide maw filled with rows of razor sharp teeth, it stood in the middle of a clearing, tendrils waving in the air.  Judging his distance and the size of the beast, he calculated the weakest point on it, and struck hard with his Whirlwind, easily avoiding the roaring creature's retaliatory strike.

The Nepent was quite persistent, though, and eventually managed to land a devastating blow to Brax, knocking him to his knees, though failing to incapacitate him.  His armor bore most of the damage, it's craftsmanship allowing it to weather the blow, and he returned the strike twofold, releasing another powerful Whirlwind that ended the beast's electronic existence.  Among it's proffered loot, Brax managed again to find a Potion of Strength, something he knew would come in handy in the coming days.

Choosing to rest for a moment, instead of continuing his monster bashing, he rested against a nearby stump and perused the area.  He failed to indulge his normal thought process, at least in times such as this, and merely enjoyed the silence as much as was possible for him.  He saw a few things suitable for crafting, some odds and ends, and getting up, collected them before moving on.

A Brown Bear was wandering through the next clearing, and Brax again began his dance with death.  His feet picked up their pace, and his axe head found purchase in the creature's hide.  This beast had better reflexes than one he had met before, however, for as Brax pulled his weapon free, the bear turned and caught him with a powerful swipe, knocking Brax back several feet.  The blow partially winded him, but Brax was made of slightly sterner stuff than most, at least after all the training he had put under his belt.  He charged again, another attack ready.

Unfortunately, his Epitaph guided blow missed it's mark, and the Bear made Brax pay dearly for the mistake.  While he was strong enough to take the hit, Brax was again knocked on his behind.  The rigors of combat were taking their toll on his body and mind, but Brax would soldier on in pursuit of a higher goal: strength and stamina to survive into the future and the reclamation of his past.

Apparently Brax had done more than he thought, for after his missed attack, the Bear began howling in confusion.  Having previously knocked off a piece of it, a tuft of bear leather lay near the rampaging Bear.  Brax carefully inched his way around the beast, and managed to collect it before the animal's senses detected him.  'I think I shall use it's confusion to my advantage,' Brax thought, as he prepared to surprise the creature.  As he picked it up, though, the bear caught wind of him, turning around and taking a chunk from his HP bar for the distraction he had given it.

It was this distraction that kept Brax from seeing the Bear try to advance again, and as it bore down on him, Brax barely saw it's huffing form.  It managed to almost land a decent strike, but Brax, having been rudely shaken from his mental repartee, rolled away from the brunt of the attack, and rose to his feet.  He struck back twice, his Whirlwind missing due to his adrenaline, and after missing his blow, he retreated to consider his wounds.

Dancing around the animal, Brax considered his options: he could run, ending the battle as the beast was too slow to compete with him, or stay and fight, trying his best to end the battle quick enough to salvage his nonexistent pride.  He chose the latter, but held off on attacking, waiting the bear out in hopes of finding another opening in it's defenses.  The bear itself was also incapable of landing a decent hit, it's bulky frame unable to hit his Epitaph powered feet.

Brax continued circling the animal, moving just outside the range of it's attacks.  He saw the bear lurch forward, catching it's feet on a rock littered about the makeshift arena, and knew he had his chance.  He prepared his attack, waiting for just the right moment, but as he moved forward the shambling animal suddenly swerved, causing his blow to miss as well.  He knew though that the end of the fight was nigh.  His body could still accomplish the task he had begun: winning the battle.

Brax needed to regather his energy, but he chose not to completely take his eye off of the skies, splitting his focus between the ground and trees in an attempt to search for more loot.  He found success on both fronts, as he dodged a missile thrown from above, he was able to collect it as loot, since a troublesome monkey was choosing rather decent projectiles to chunk his way.  This one was a rather undamaged fruit, suitable for any budding alchemist to use in their potion-crafting.

But that would be the only material he would find, as the monkey moved on in search of another player to harass.  While the unemotional man was incapable of feeling or expressing gratitude, the relaxation of his shoulders was a clear response to the creature's departure from tormenting him.  He would be able to focus on his training, becoming familiar with the weapon he called his own, the dreaded Battle-Axe.

Even though he sought to get comfortable with his blade of choice, Brax could not help but dwell on the thought plaguing him involving the Pactagonal Knights.  His first recovered memory, and he had yet to crack it open for intense study.  But he pushed those thoughts aside, sensing somehow that another mob was searching for attention, and his weapon was eager to continue it's bloody test.

The final foe that would fall to his axe was another wolf, grey fur bristled in anticipation for the thrill of battle.  It came upon Brax swiftly, but his weapon was swifter still.  He activated his Whirlwind attack as the beast attempted to bite his arm off, with the twin blows from his weapon forcing the animal away and causing extreme damage in return.  The wolf came to rest a few feet to the left, but it shook off the strong blow and circled around him to try again.

The wolf tried once more to break through his defenses, but Brax would not succumb.  He allowed the wolf to close the gap between them, and just as it was about the move he struck first, his well practiced Whirlwind tearing into the beast like a can opener to soup.  The animal was smote in two, the bifurcated halves vanishing into pixels, leaving Brax to collect the loot drop with an eye on finishing up.  His thoughts again turned to the Knights, now unbidden by the burden of watching for unruly mobs to train against.

'I wonder,' Brax mused to himself, 'what does the Pactogonal Knight in my past reference?'  He had not given himself an opportunity to think on it, as his training had taken his attention.  But the mystery remained in the forefront of his wandering mind.  He absentmindedly picked up a fallen string, likely from some other player, and twirled it in his hand.  'It must be from a game I used to play.  The message boards have no clue what it is, and without an outside search engine I cannot find it outside of the playerbase.  Where to ask, where to ask?'  He pocketed the string and continued his break time.
