[PP-F2] From the Bottom (Teselmar/Lessa)

Recommended Posts

Teselmar wasn't afraid to die. He'd been a thrill-seeker out in the world, and in here the tangible excitement that came with risking his life still held some appeal for him. However, what he'd had out there was a set of survival skills honed by his time as a police officer and security expert. In here? Well, he'd taken a fencing class once, but that was about the extent of his experience with a sword. If he died in here from sheer lack of numerical prowess, he'd just feel... disappointed, perhaps? He glanced left and right, seeing the encroaching shapes of what looked like giant pigs, their tusks gleaming in the morning light. The path up from the craggy city of Urbus had been relatively free of monsters, but Teselmar had gotten turned around, unused to reading the game's map on his HUD. This wooded clearing had seemed to be a shortcut, and now he was being stalked by what looked like 3 boars.

He sighed, unsheathing the <<Iron Nail>> at his side. Teselmar hadn't made any kills of any kind in Aincrad yet, had few healing potions, and was outnumbered 3 to 1. Still, he smiled a bit, facing the mob head on. "Let's see how many of you pigs I can stick with this thing."

It was not unusual to see players milling about the second floor. From her post atop a hill, Lessa could spot five different individuals, each focused on his or her own task. Many viewed this floor as the perfect mixture of challenge and security, escaping the madness of the first floor without encountering too much danger. It was also the perfect stage for Lessa to aid other players. That was, after all, the position that she had bestowed upon herself.

The man caught her attention for the same reasons that all of the other players did. He walked alone, rather than flanked by friends, his party, or his guild mates. He wore no additional armor, instead sporting the cloth starter gear. There was an unusual glint to his weapon as it bounced against his hip, suggesting that it was at least a step above the basic weapon. He was off to a good start, but the way that he constantly glanced about suggested that he had a way to go.

Despite all of the usual elements, she did not involve herself until the three boars spawned nearby. The blonde's jaw worked as she watched the man round on the three monsters. True, the tall player dwarfed the boars, but she had seen those pests bring down much mightier players. In an instant, she was jogging closer.

"Hey," she called out to him, gauntlet-clad hands held up in the universal sign for 'I'm not here to hurt you.' "Those boars are tougher than they look. You may want to take them on one by one."

Spoiler

Boars: 8 health, 6 damage.

As the boars grunted, their beady eyes getting closer, Teselmar heard a figure approaching at a quick pace. He spun to see a woman, her hair as fair as his, jogging towards him with her hands up. By the look of her, she was a decently high level, and carried herself like she knew what she was doing. Teselmar nodded, and grinned at her. "Thanks for the heads up." When he saw that one of the boars was in range for him to draw its aggro, he dashed to the left, drawing it away from the rest of the brood.

Teselmar stabbed at the creature, but his blade went a bit wide, only going through the beast's fur. He hoped that he didn't get gored by the creature's tusk on its turn.

(( Since I'm not fighting, I'll go ahead and roll/write for the boar! ))

With his wide grin and easy nod, the young man responded well to her suggestion. That was a welcome change from the norm. So often, Lessa offered advice only to have it thrown back at her in a show of annoyance, anger or apathy. Even the lowest level players could be plagued with arrogance so severe that they would react negatively to help from someone more experienced. Lessa was thrilled to see that this was no the case.

With renewed vigor, she shifted into training mode. "Nice form," she called out. "But try holding your sword back for just a few seconds longer. It will sort of power it up, and then the game will actually help guide you. It takes some getting used to."

As she spoke, she kept a close eye on the boar. It was a very basic, low-level mob, which meant that it was quite clumsy. As it rounded on the man once more, its back hoof nicked its front leg, causing it to stumble. Good, the blonde thought. That gave the man another shot.

((Thanks!))

Teselmar knew better than to ignore good advice when in a life or death situation. More than 2,000 players had died already in these first few months, many due to their own arrogance. Teselmar was a confident man, and he never hesitated to throw himself into anything. Still, it would do no one any good for him to be careless in this instance. If the woman who had appeared wanted to play teacher, then he would play the student. "Will do!" He called out, returning his attention to the creature.

He lifted his rapier once more, holding it in a fixed position by his head. The blade glowed a brilliant viridian, and he tried to remember how to execute this sword art. Rip Ravine was the strongest sword art he knew at this point, and the system carried him through the movement as he dashed forward once more, attempting to slash the boar with two cuts in a V-shape.

Both slices missed, just barely once more. The momentum of the sword art wasn't something Teselmar was used to, and it carried him a bit more off balance than he'd intended. He grunted, trying to shake off the cooldown and recover his spent energy.

The onlooker winced at the near miss. He had activated his sword art, which was a task in itself. Lessa had struggled just to do that much for the longest time, so the rapier's blue tint demonstrated that there was so hope. But the boy still missed, clearly still unable to turn himself entirely over to the system. She could not blame him; it was a bit terrifying at first, trusting a game to take control.

But as the blonde watched, the boar took its turn. This time, there was no clumsy trip-up, and the large pig barreled confidently toward the taller player. Sharp hooves thudded across the plain, piercing the dirt and uprooting tufts of soft, green grass. It blazed a direct trail toward the boy, and Lessa sucked in a nervous breath. Fortunately, the low-level mob slightly miscalculated, and brushed harmlessly by.

"You should have enough energy to give it another go. Or you can take some time to save up your energy. Your choice."

Teselmar had enough energy to try the attack again. He raced forward, launching Rip Ravine once more as he tried to cleave the boar twice with his blade.

He just barely missed again, the boar evading his strike as he struggled to control the sword art. "Ack, can't seem to hit anything today..."
