[SP-F1] Blood and Iron «Earning a Living» COMPLETE

Recommended Posts

Tyr was stunned when his hand slipped off of the rock and he kept sliding till his head hit the rocks at full speed. Laying there in a daze he could barely start to make out a faint red glow beginning to rise around the clearing. If he had been fully conscious, he would have seen that when the blood on his hand dripped into the water, the entire pool began to glow blood red for a short moment, before the glow diffused itself into the ice around the clearing. The last thing Tyr remembered before everything fading was the sound of the wolves letting out a ferocious howl as the clearing seemed to shatter into a thousand shards of ice. Looking up to the moon, a message popped up in his HUD. <<Safe Zone Activated>>. And then everything went black.

From the darkness, Tyr heard a familiar "clang" sounding in the distance. Thinking he was still dreaming, he chose to ignore it, until another "clang" rang in his ears. Opening eyes, he looked about into a forge that felt strangely familiar. Glancing over to the anvil, he saw the old man standing there working on what appeared to be a large hammer.

"So you're finally awake, ey?" Grumbled the old man. "It took you long enough. Get up, there's work to be done."

"How long have I been out?" he questioned the old man.

"Oh about two days. When you didn't come back, I set off to find you." the smith replied.

    "Where are we?" Tyr asked.

"That my young apprentice, is a very good question. Come outside, it seems there are a few things I need to explain."

Stepping out of the forge, Tyr had to blink a few times for his eyes to adjust to the sunlight. When his vision cleared, what he saw left him speechless. Where once there was ice and cold, now there was warmth and the green of new growth. A hidden oasis in a winterized land. Surrounding the clearing were large plates of blood-red metal in a very familiar pattern. Looking closer, he realized that the sheets were formed in the shape of rose petals, with amazing attention to detail down to the veins in the leaf. Taking a moment to think about it, he realized with a start that this entire place was in the shape of a flower in bloom fanning out from the pool in the center. He also realized that the path and clearings were the stem and leaves. The ice seemed to retreat from the edges of the rose, a safe haven from the cold of winter.

He realized that he had walked to the pool to take in the masterpiece from its center. Looking back to the old man, he saw that he had been standing next to the building that housed his forge. With a quick smile and a slight look, the smith walked back into the building. Filled with questions, Tyr quickly followed him inside and took a seat next to the fire. The old man picked up where he left off on the hammer, with a steady ring of metal on metal, he waited for Try to begin talking.

"What is this place?" he asked the man.

"This place has been a home to me for many years. My master first brought me here when I was young, as his had before him, explaining that this place would always be safe. It is where I first learned and honed my craft, selling my wares in the neighboring town or trading them for supplies. I would get lost in my art, losing track of all time and the events of the world around me. My master explained to me that when I became a master, I would have to craft a new petal for the flower protecting this place, using only the skills and tools that I had created and mastered with my own hands, as you must do when the time comes. The only thing left beyond that would be to take an apprentice of my own, and pass this haven along to them, that they might learn in the same way. So I ask you this now, do you truly wish to master the art and discipline of the blacksmith?" he asked with a sense of severe finality and urgency.

Tyr needed only think of it for a moment before answering with a heartfelt, "Yes, I do."

With one last mighty swing of his arm, the old man finished the hammer he was making with a thunderous crash. "Then I pass this place onto you, to forge your wares and a location from which to sell them. I also will leave you with your first tool of this new trade. May your aim be ever true and may your hammer be ever strong. With this I must say goodbye."

Tyr reached out and caught the old man by the arm, "Who are you?" he asked.

The smith looked at him with an almost human glint in his eye, "I am but a simple old man, looking to pass the torch along to the new generation." With that he slipped free and exited the building.

Tyr sat there for a moment before looking at the forge. "Where should I begin." he questioned out loud, stoking the fire hotter and looking at the chunk of material in his inventory, "What will you become?"
