[SP-F1] Here We Go! <<Earning A Living>>

Recommended Posts

Ronin opened his eyes, drawing a long deep breath into his lungs.  A smile instantly crept across his lips and he looked all around, examining his new environment.  This is [censored], amazing... he thought, taking it all in.  It all felt so real, so intense, so alive.  He couldn't wait to get started and so he put one foot in front of the other and raced off toward the outskirts of town.  His best bet was to get started right away with some action.  First, he would need to find some creatures to battle!

As he raced out of town and into the grasslands, Ronin's eyes lit up at just how giant this world really was.  His breath was halted inside his lungs and he stood motionless for a long moment, taking it all in and trying to figure out exactly what he was looking at.   It was insane, the sheer magnitude of this whole place.  He couldn't wait to explore it all.  Every little nook, every little cranny, he wanted to travel to the farthest ends of the world and see if there were any limitations at all.  From the looks of things right now, it didn't appear there were.  He grinned and turned his attention to the immediate area, spotting a boar like creature roaming across the field.  Narrowing his eyes on it, he knew this would be his very first test of the combat system!

The wild boar roamed the open field, uninterested in Ronin or anything else other than the food it was currently grubbing on.  As it trotted along, one little hoof landing in front of the next and tail swishing back and forth across its backside, it chewed gleefully at the grass.  The plains were rich and ripe with all the grass a wild boar like this could eat and there wasn't a care in the world.  That was, until Ronin appeared with that sadistic looking grin on his face and his fingers itching for the touch of his sword's handle...

"HERE I COME!" roared Ronin as he tore his blade from the sheath on his back and went charging across the field toward the wild boar.  His eyes were wide with excitement and the smile on his lips had grown to expose all of his teeth.  He was racing forward as fast as he legs would carry him and he couldn't wait to engage this creature in combat and see how it played out.  As he came within range, he gripped the handle of his sword tightly in both hands, preparing himself for the upcoming fight!  What would happen next, was anyone's guess.

Before Ronin could reach the wild board, he tripped over his own foot and went tumbling head over heels.  His sword went clanking across the ground and he ended up in a seated position with his head spinning.  "Ugh... what the hell was that..." he groaned, rubbing his neck in discomfort.  After a few moments, he suddenly realized that there actually was no discomfort in his neck and it was all in his head.  "Huh?  Wait a minute... it doesn't hurt?" he itched his head confused, but shrugged his shoulders deciding not to argue with the absence of pain.  "Maybe I should rethink my approach on all this..."

Eventually climbing back to his feet and dusting himself off, he looked at the grass stains that now decorated his attire.  He sighed as he peeked over his shoulder and spotted the majority of the green markings on his ass.  Damnit, now they're all going to laugh at me... he thought, before frowning and turning his eyes back to the wild boar.  "That damn thing doesn't even care, either," he sighed, seeing that the boar hadn't even batted an eyelash to his presence or his charge from before.  It was definitely a good thing that he hadn't engaged it, for it probably would've kicked his ass.   No, he needed to head back to town and see if there was another way to get started.

Once he had picked up his two handed sword and resheathed his weapon, he hung his head and headed back toward town, feeling discouraged.  He didn't know what he had done wrong, but clearly he wasn't ready to go charging up to wild boars and instigating any attacks just yet.  He sighed and looked for another way.  It was then that he heard the clanking of a hammer against metal and his ears twitched in wonder.  "What's that?" he asked of himself, following his ears toward the source of the sound.  Eventually, he came upon a shop where a blacksmith was busy at work, banging her hammer down on a long piece of steel.  "Whoa, what's this?!  Blacksmithing?!"

The woman looked up briefly, flashing Ronin a smile before getting back to work.  Her hammer rose high up into the air, before she drove it down into the strip of steel once more and then again and again.  His ears resounded with the loud clanging sound and he grit his teeth at first, though eventually he got used to it.  He watched in wonder for several long moments, before the woman's hammer finally struck again and a transformation started to take place.  "Whoa!?  What's happening now?" he whispered to himself, his eyes wide in curiosity.  Right before his gaze, the strip of steel transformed into a small dagger.  The woman seemed dissatisfied with it and hucked it into a large bin with a bunch of other crappy looking creations.  "Hmm... hey uh... need any help here?" asked Ronin at last.

"Oh?" The woman stopped and looked to Ronin once again, giving him a soft smile.  "Well, if you've got nothing better to do, then sure, come give me a hand!"  She replied, shrugging her shoulders and deciding she could always use some free help.  Realizing this in her head, she made sure to mention it to the kid, so he wouldn't be expecting her to give him some sort of payment.  "Just so you know... I'm not hiring or anything, if that's what you're looking for..."  "Oh no," insisted Ronin, waving his hand in a dismissive manner.  "I'd just like to see what it is you do here!"

"Mmm, so you're just a little curious are ya?  Well nothin' wrong with that, how else is one supposed to learn something new right?" she laughed and shook her head, before heading back over to her hammer and pulling another strip of steel up onto the work bench to begin again.  Ronin looked on, moving up closer and wondering what he might be able to do to help.  "What is it that you make here?  Other than... daggers?" he realized, looking toward the apparent trash bin once again and arching an eyebrow at the dagger she had recently discarded.  He wondered where his own weapon had come from and if this woman had been the one to make it?  "Oh, well, I make everything from weapons, like swords, axes, spears and daggers, to armor, shields and even tools!"  She replied, lifting her hammer into the air and driving it down into the strip of steel.

"Wow, that sounds like just the thing I need to learn!"  Stated the swordsman who had just recently entered into this new world of possibilities.  He had thought his weapon to be of good quality and surely it was decent enough, but the thought of making himself an even better weapon and hell, some armor to go along with it, well, he just couldn't resist the idea.  "So, what can I do to help you out?  I'd love to learn your trade and become a blacksmith myself one day!" he announced, before planting his hands on his hips and awaiting her instruction.

"Well since you're so eager to get going, how about you head just outside of town to the hillside and fetch me some more ore.  There's an ore vein just up there in the hills a ways, inside a little nook.  You should see a trail leading up there through the grass and once you see the cave you'll know you're there.  I head up there pretty often, so the trail should be well defined for you, can't miss it really."  She gave him a look to see if he was up to the task or not, before turning back to her own work.  Whether he was capable, remained to be seen.  Certainly it was no skin off her back however, whether he made it back with some ore or not.  Though, it would be very helpful.  "Right, I'll get going right away!" he said, before heading out of the shop.

As soon as Ronin stepped outside the shop, he felt an overwhelming sense of confusion rush over him.  He sighed, not having the faintest idea of where to go.  She had mentioned heading out of town, toward the hillside and into the cave.  Where the hell was that?  Where was the hillside? Or the cave for that matter?  Was this even possible for someone who had just joined the game?  He shook his head and decided to give it his best shot, maybe he could pull up his map or something and figure out which way to go?  He tried accessing the menu, but was really confused and lost.  Instead, he decided he would stick to in-game methods and he began looking for someone or something, that might be able to help him.

After a long ass time of looking around for someone to give him directions, the swordsman had finally found a sign post of sorts.  While he didn't know any of the town names or places that the sign referred to, he did know that if he followed any of them far enough, he would eventually make it outside of town and perhaps then he'd be able to spot this hillside and this cave.  Following his gut, he headed East and eventually reached the outskirts of town.  To his endless elation and surprise, he spotted a hillside just ahead and a frequently trekked path leading up to a cave.  "Thank [censored] god..." he sighed, before marching up the path toward the cave.   Perhaps things were starting to look up for him after all...

As he entered into the cave he took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down and relax his mind.  Things had been moving so fast since he entered this new world and he knew he needed to get some organization, some direction.  He took a moment to gather himself, before proceeding onward.  This also gave him adequate time for his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting of the cave.  He stepped in and noted the dankness of the interior.  He would quickly become overheated if he worked too long or too hard inside this place, so he would have to be careful.  He spotted a pickaxe leaning against the wall at the mouth of the cave and he picked it up, deciding the Blacksmith chick had probably left it here to make it easier for herself when she came for more materials.  "Alright then... here goes nothin..." he said, hoisting the pickaxe up and preparing to drive it into the ore vein.

As the pickaxe hit the vein, Ronin's eyes lit up as it had an immediate effect.  The vein produced some material and he moved the pickaxe away, lifting his free hand and picking it up.  It was exactly what the Blacksmith had been looking for!  He grinned wide and pumped his fist into the air holding the material.  "Hell yes!  First try!!! WOOOO!!!!" he cheered, hearing his voice echo all through the cave system.  He wondered just how far it went and if he might get the chance to explore a little deeper sometime.  For now, he was just excited he had done so well and figured he might as well give it another shot while he was here.  The Blacksmith would certainly be pleased if he brought back several materials, rather than just one!

Giving the pickaxe another swing, Ronin watched carefully to see what would happen this time...

As the pickaxe struck the wall again and the ore lit up as well as his eyes, Ronin stepped back and frowned.  "Nothing... damnit"  he growled, before shaking his head and looking toward the mouth of the gave.  There was a little stream of light pouring in and he wondered how long he had been gone from the shop already.  Perhaps it was wise to simply head back now with the one material he had gained already?  No, he had to keep trying!  Besides, this was pretty fun!  He lifted the pickaxe once again, the muscles in his arms engaging as he drove it into the wall a third time and waited to see what happened.

Ronin let out another heavy sigh as he stepped back and found that his most recent attempt had once again been in vain.  And no, it wasn't the damn ore vein he was hacking away at hoping to get something out of either.  He shook his head and spat at the floor, feeling tired and taking a deep breath into his lungs to try and replenish his air.  It was a little muggy, a little hot and humid inside this cave and he had to remember to take it easy.  Or did he?  Ronin focused his mind and realized once again that this was a virtual world and pain, along with feelings of fatigue due to humidity were probably all just in his head.  He pursed his lips feeling his energy return and swung the pickaxe again!  "HRRRGH!"

"DAMNIT!" cried Ronin, throwing the pickaxe at the wall and stepping back.  He spat at the wall and looked toward the mouth of the cave once again.  This was becoming frustrating.  He wondered how on earth this Blacksmith chick tolerated this kind of crap.  Would she really come up here day after day and swing this damn pickaxe at the ore vein, just hoping to get lucky and strike true?  He wondered, but he couldn't know for sure without asking her.  If he himself was going to pursue the career of a Blacksmith however, he would need to get used to this kind of thing, surely.  He sighed and his temper cooled, before he picked up the pickaxe again and tried once more.  If he didn't get anything this next time, he was going to say screw it and head back down with what he had found.  Hopefully it would be enough.

"YEEEEEEHHHAAAWWWW!" he roared, his cheer nearly causing the entire cave's ceiling to collapse on top of him.  He thrust his fist into the air several times as he pulled the pickaxe away and picked up his newly mined ore.  "Man!  I'm so good," he said to himself, gloating and feeling awesome.  Sure he had swung a few duds, but this time he had struck it true and it was his best pull ever!  He put the ore away with the one he had found earlier and nodded his head.  That should be good enough for now, he thought before setting the pickaxe down and leaving the cave.  He headed back into town and back to the shop. hoping that the Blacksmith would be as pleased as he was!
