Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) Having made his way to the 13th Floor of his own accord, Nikodemus found himself within the settlement of Angel's Point. Seeing the green grass and living flora in the settlement was a shocking contrast compared to the dead, brown, and stunted growth beyond the safezone. Letting his eyes gaze across the buildings, he noted their odd architecture and design. The large stain glassed windows were odd to him. At the center of the settlement, upon a sloping hill, sat a large cathedral church, it's bell tower a knife edge raising into the gloomy grey skies. Upon stepping from the teleport gate, Nikodemus noticed that the NPCs about were all moving quickly about, as if a danger loomed overhead. As he began to move toward a merchant NPC who was hustling people from his cart, Nikodemus stopped as the air was rent by the peeling of a large bell. Feeling the reverberations shake him to his bones, Nikodemus strained to not yelp at the sudden sensation. A second and third time the bell was struck. Turning towards the church, Nikodemus saw a man standing just beneath the bell, a large hammer in hand. He wore armor of ivory silver with trims of gold. Thinking this man to be some holy warrior, Nikodemus turned away from the sight and began once again towards the merchants cart. Upon turning, Nikodemus noticed all who were still outside were kneeled upon the grass, hands clasped together and heads bowed in supplication. With a quirked eyebrown, Nikodemus stalked among them slowly and looked about at each person he passed. The world seemed quiet all of a sudden, and his armored boots scuffing against the grass was the only sound he could hear. After a time, the bell was rung 3 more times, and the NPCs all stood and began to move about their business as if nothing had happened. Coming to a stop before the merchant cart, Nikodemus leaned over and looked at the owner, then spoke calmly. "What was that? Why do you all kneel at the sound of three bells?" Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 19, 2016 Author #2 Share Posted May 19, 2016 The merchant stared at the armor clad giant with wide eyes for a moment, and the shook his head quickly and replied as best as he could. "It was our time to pray. We do so every six hours. It is just that way friend. Now, how may I be of service?" With a sigh, Nikodemus unclipped his helmet and removed it, his short cropped brunette hair and long brunette and grey beard being rustled as the helmet slips from his head. Running a hand through both hair and beard, Nikodemus eyed the merchant with icy blue eyes, and then his wares. "I came of my own reasons. The birds told me of one who resides on this floor, one I must find. Now, I have heard pray tell that this whole floor is one large graveyard... Is this true?" The merchant's lips seemed to become a thin flat line, and the color drained from him. Nodding slightly, he began to speak in stammering mumbles. "Uh... Ye...Yes. That... That is True. Why would... Uh, why would you want to leave the town? We are safe here... Out... Out there, there is naught but death. Who, or rather, what would you need to find here? Turn back! Do not leave!" Fear tightened the mans voice and his eyes darted about as if a looming specter would appear behind the armored giant, hands ready to strangle them for speaking of the graveyard beyond. Shaking his head with terror he almost failed to hear Nikodemus words. "As I said, I came of my own reasons, to find what I was told to seek. The birds do not lie, so I must be here. Now, how much for these bundles of meat?" The merchant squeaked at Nikodemus' explanation and failure to be swayed into leaving. Looking to the meat that was mentioned, the merchant laughed a shaky chuckle and then pushed the basket forward. "That is but waste, the worst cuts of meat. Not even are they worthy of the wateriest stew a beggar might make... These scraps are tossed to the carrion and dogs. I would take no more than 5 Col for the lot." Reaching a hand into a pouch at his side, Nikodemus produced 5 glimmering coins and dropped them before the merchant. With a swipe of his hand, he opened the HUD menu and accessed the items Inventory ID, swapping them to his inventory. As he did so, the meat was moved from the basket and became bundled within a brown parchment paper, thin strands of twine holding the package closed together on all sides. Grabbing it, Nikodemus slid it in another pouch at his side and then donned his helmet, sealing it tightly and locking it in place. With a bow, Nikodemus turned towards the exit of Angel's Point and began towards it. -5 Col +1 bundle of scrap meat
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 19, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted May 19, 2016 Upon approach to the settlements main gate, a large wrought iron affair tipped with spike that were more for deterrent than ornamentation, Nikodemus was approached by a large figure in ivory silver armor chased in gold. At the persons hip, a large one handed hammer sat hanging from a leather strap. The man held a helmet between his arm and side, his strong jaw line and square framed face showing no signs of blemish nor scar. The wheat colored mane of shoulder length hair was tied back in a leather cord and his eyes were the color of topaz jewels. Holding a hand, the man spoke with a baritone voice. "Halt good sir. I ask that you please reconsider this course of action." Stopping before the man, Nikodemus looked at him and removed his own helmet once more. "I must apologize mein gutt herren, but I cannot be swayed to stop, nor turn back. I am Nikodemus and my business requires I do this."
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 19, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted May 19, 2016 Hearing Nikodemus' reply, the man sighed and then turned and looked out beyond the safezone, into the dead world before them. Shaking his head slightly, the man turned back and let his topaz gaze lock with the icy sapphire gaze of the armored giant before him. "I have an assumption of why you are here. I will ask no further, but will simply say that what you seek can be gained with the help of an old gypsy woman. She lives in a stone hut just inside the safezone, down the hill there. Speak with here. She may provide insight to what you must do. I pray your journey is safe and I see you return safe." With that, the man stalked off, his hammer clattering lightly at his side. Nikodemus watched him leave, and his eyes drifted to the cathedral in the center of town. Those who wore the ivory armor were surely holy warriors of the church, there to protect the city. The one he saw in the bell tower was one, and the man he had just met was another. His mind pondered momentarily at how many must be within the town, but he shrugged the inquiry from his broken mind and turned, pressing onwards to the small hut just down the path before the safezone's exit. Within a minute Nikodemus stood before the door to the hut. The cobbled chimney puffed smoke lightly from a fireplace somewhere inside. The smells of burning wood wafted through the air, along with the smells of food, or some such cookable item. A small black cat, no bigger than Nikodemus hand, sat mewling before a bowl of milk. Leaning it's tiny head over the rim, both paws upon the bowl, it couldn't help but tip the bowl lightly and slip head first into the creamy depth, splashing about lightly before surfacing once more with a fur covered head drenched in milk. Mewling again, it blinked up at the large giant and then looked back at the milk. Stiffling a laugh, Nikodemus took a small wide metal cup he carried with him for drinking tea in from it's pouch and knelt down. Scooping a small portion of the milk from the bowl, he then set the small cup before the mewling kitten and watched it begin to hungrily lap at the milk, purrs and mewls of joy ringing from it's tiny frame. Hearing the softest of footsteps, Nikodemus glanced up to see a woman of middling years standing before him. Her silvery hair was bound in one long tight braid that was wrapped about her left shoulder and hung down to her lower abdomen. Small feathers and beads were woven into the braids with leather and silk cords, and a cowl of green cloth was wrapped about her head and neck, giving her the look of a farmers wife. A cream colored apron full of unique tools and items hung about her, covering a soft royal blue dress with thread of gold trim about it. Patterns of flower petals and leaves decorated the material and gave it a spring look. Her chocolate brown eyes scanned him up and down, After a moment, her lightly wrinkled hands clapped before her heart and a smile spread across her face, almost reaching her eyes. "You are a kind hearted man. Most would have watched the animal struggle, due to the belief of survival of the fittest. But you helped it, even though it brought you no reward. Why?" Unhooking his helmet and setting it down, Nikodemus leaned against the stone wall beside the kitten and let a sigh escape him. Putting his words together carefully, Nikodemus spoke with a calm but serious tone. "Sadly mamzel, it IS survival of the fittest in this world. But there are those who believe that even under those circumstances, life should be protected no matter what form it takes, or how strong it is. I am one of those few. I know I and the others who are trapped here will not leave without the help of one another, so every life is precious to me." Gazing down at the small kitten, Nikodemus smiled, and then turned his icy blue eyes back to the woman. "A man in the village up there said you could help me. Will you?" Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Lifting her eyes from Nikodemus, the old lady turned her head slightly and looked towards Angel's Point and sighed. After a moment, she looked back and nodded softly. "Yes. Tobar was correct. I can help you, and I shall. You seek something out there, in the deadlands. I know of it, and I know how you will not only find it, but bend it to your will. My name is Velika the Gypsy, I am what is called a Tamer. The man you met, Tobar, was once my apprentice. But another calling was laid before his feet, and I would not interfere with his path. I can teach you my skills easily, and the one you seek can be turned to your cause. It will take me some time to prepare you, but I see you have a natural affinity to it already, so it wont be to long. A word of warning, you will be capable of taming no larger than a hound or wolf. Anything bigger will be beyond your skills. It takes a lifetime of learning to be able to master larger beasts, so do not be foolish. Come. Let us begin." Following the Velika into her hit, Nikodemus noticed the inside to be like that of a true gypsy. Cloth canvas painted in myriad colors and designes covered each wall and the ceiling, the floor was made of wood and lacquered to prevent warping. In the far wall, a fireplace was set in stone bricks, and mounted to a pivoting bracket was a large armature that could be moved in and out of the fire. This arm held a large pot upon a crook, suspending it over the flames to allow the contents to boil. A few feet away from the fireplace was a table made of wood, dozens of glass and stone bottles, jars, and pots lined it, each filled with strange things. In the center of the room was a large mat that covered the floor, it's circular shape sewn with the image of the sun and moon entwined with one another. Sitting before the fire, Velika began to speak, telling of the skills a Tamer can possess and use. While she did this, she took a large book bound in wood and brass from the table and opened it to a page marked with a feather. Turning to Nikodemus she smiled and beckoned him sit beside her upon a stool. Taking the seat, Nikodemus looked to her and listened to her tale. She began to teach him the methods of taming beasts and bending them to his will, providing him with all the knowledge he would need. This happened throughout the day and into the night, not ending until the sun began to burn away the cobalt heavens to reveal the morning sky.
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) As the morning sun began it's ascent through the grey skies of morning on the 13th Floor, Nikodemus emerged from Velika's hut and stretched his limbs. Having been sat for nearly 12 hours had given him a stiff muscles and a sore back. Doing some minor turns and stretches, Nikodemus readied himself to leave. Casting a glance back at Velika, who was standing in the doorway with the small kitten in her arms, Nikodemus nodded and gave his farewells and thanks for her help. Equipping his Rainbow Stone trinket, Nikodemus prepared for the journey ahead. Leaving her hut, He moved down the path and secured his helmet and sealing it, then took hold of his shield and axe. He knew the deadlands beyond would be dangerous, and he had no intention of venturing out unarmed or unprepared. Moving along, passed through the safezone barrier, feeling a slight tingle as he did. He knew he was still safe from mobs as long as he stayed within 30 feet of the barrier, so he moved carefully away following the winding path amongst the dead and barren hills and mounds, stunted trees and shrubs covering their apex, dead shriveled grass dotting them here and there. Large stone markers of various shapes and designs broke the dead ground here and there, each weathered and left nameless. Moving along the path and keeping himself alert, Nikodemus ventured along with a determination and will made of steel. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Moving along the gravestones, Nikodemus kept his wits about him as he traveled down the path. It had been a full 4 hours since he had left Velika's hut and the safezone, and no enemy mobs had been seen. Nor had any players. He doubted few would come here due to the floors interesting mechanics. It was rare to find anything of use here, and when you did, you found a great amount, but by harvesting them, the source withers and dies immediately. It is for this reason that many people do not come material hunting here. The mobs that spawn are also unsettling, being undead human warriors who stalk the land, slaying any and all who live. With a great risk and little reward, it seemed many players left the 13th floor alone, unless it is needed. With his axe in hand, Nikodemus stalked the land like a giant. Looking about, he noticed a faded wooden sign with directions painted in chipped black paint. Moving to it, he read the words scrolled there. "Left, Valley of the Dead. Right, Central cemetery. Hmmm... Right it is." Turning to his right, Nikodemus moved with a quickened pace and tried to cover more ground to reach the central part of the floor. It was here he assumed he would find the object of his intent there. The trail he followed twisted and turned, went over slopes and between hills and stunted trees. With his eyes scanning the area, Nikodemus kept alert for any mobs nearby. Nothing was seen, and he breathed a sigh of relief as he was still in the clear. Moving along the trail, Nikodemus finally came to a large gate and wall that stretched for vast distances to both sides, the structure of the wall the gate was attached to having a rounded appearance. Worked in the blackened iron were the words "Central Cemetery" and they were still visible. Leaning down and grabbing one of the bars, Nikodemus pushed hard and the door opened on creaking rusted hinges. Within, rows and rows, columns and columns, plots and plots, all bisected by paths and trails that wound, crossed, intersected, and curved along the ground to provide a strange geometrical shape that would hurt anyone gazing down at it. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Standing before the large central cemetery, Nikodemus looked about cautiously trying to determine if any danger loomed nearby. Nothing could be seen, no enemies or players, nothing. Deciding to press on, Nikodemus began moving deeper into the center cemetery. Winding his way through the gravestones, plots, and many clumps of burial mounds, Nikodemus found himself approaching the very center of the cemetery. Sitting in the exact middle, a large 10 foot tall wall curved around a tombstone infront of it. As Nikodemus stepped close to the grave stone, a large black raven with burning cobalt eyes swooped in, claws punching into the stone wall above him. Startled greatly, Nikodemus jumped back and brought his axe and shield up. "Great Weyland's beard! What are you?!" The large raven, almost as tall as a man, gazed down at the man in armor and opened it's beak. Instead of a caw, a voice rang through. Hollow and deep, the voice rent the air, and Nikodemus felt it in his mind also. "Hark mortal! Bow before Typhus, Lord of the land of Hel! State your business!" Standing there, Nikodemus did not move. Speaking with a strong and calm voice, Nikodemus stood his ground. "I am Nikodemus. I come for you Lord of Hel. I shall bend you to my will!" With that, Nikodemus prepared himself to fight the large being. The hollow voice once more rang from the bird, laughing loudly, then spoke. "You fool! I will bend to no one! Come my Legion!" With a resounding caw, the ground was split and a large humanoid creature clawed itself from the ground. It's eyes were hollow black pits and it skin was taughtly pulled across the bones, revealing the being to be dead. It wore tattered leather armor, and carried a large sword. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Seeing the undead creature burst through the ground, Nikodemus took a step back and muttered a curse beneath his breath. As the creature known as Legion stood before him, the creature lifted it's sword and began to charge him. Nikodemus cursed once more and then brought his shield up knocking the blade aside with ease. Legion was testing his defenses and looking for a weakness. With a growl in his throat, Nikodemus quickly charged his Sword Art <Guillotine> and then brought his axe around in a decapitating arc. The blade hit it's mark squarely on Legion's neck, and sliced through the taught skin, leaving a deep gouge in it. His weapon's <Bleed> effect kicked in, and would hurt the beast if it moved. Leaping back, he prepared his shield for the counter attack, but none came. Looking over his shield slowly, he noticed Legion standing still, shaking as if trying to move. The creature had been stunned by the blow. Thanking the heavens, Nikodemus prepared himself to strike while Legion could not move, the hope that he could slay the beast quickly passing his mind. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #10 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Not wasting the advantage given to him, Nikodemus charged forward once more. His axe blade was glowing a sickly emerald green once again, his sword art <Lightning Axe> charged and ready to deal a deadly blow. As he came in to range, he brought the axe up over his shoulder and then down onto the beasts left shoulder, cutting down through it following the path a lightning bolt would make and exiting the right lower side. As the blade made contact, the energy built in his blade released, tearing through Legion. The creature stepped back, released from it's stunned state, and it's bony jaw working in up and down as if it would speak. No sound came forth that sounded like words, only a shriek of anger and hatred. The blackened pits where it's eyes were burst blue flames that engulfed and consumed the undead warrior, and it fell crumpled to the ground, vanishing in an explosion of pixels. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #11 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Upon it's champion falling to the axe of the armored giant, Typhus, Lord of Hel let out a screeching caw and began to shudder and convulse. It's large black wings curled and flapped about as if it tried to take flight, it's taloned feet dug deeper into the stone wall and then released it, it's head turned at impossible angles and it continued to shriek and caw. Similar blue flames engulfed it, wreathing it like a phoenix, and then they burned away to reveal Typhus once more, now the size of a large crow. It cawed in anger, it's once booming voice now more akin to that of a human. With one glowing blue eye upon Nikodemus, it began to murmur. "How... Can this be?! I, Typhus, Lord of Hel and all it's denizens, cannot be bent to a mortals will!" The large raven croaked and cawed, began to flap it's wings, lifted off, and then plummeted down and slammed into the large tombstone before Nikodemus.
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #12 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Coming to sit before the tombstone the bird lay upon, Nikodemus took his helmet off and then reached into his pack. Grabbing the bundle of meat he had brought with him to use as bait, for he assumed he'd need to trap the bird, he opened it and took a small portion from the package and laid it before the bird. The large bird, now weakened from it's champion being defeated, struggled about the on the stone grave marker and then rolled it it's feet weakily. Murmuring that he would not be tamed, the bird began to pick at the meat tearing shreds from it and then devouring the gobbets in a quick gulp. Laughing, Nikodemus shook his head and watched the bird repeat the process.
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #13 Share Posted May 20, 2016 With his icy blue eyes gazing at the bird before him, Nikodemus began to work the skills he was taught by Velika. Keeping calm, he laid another chunk of the meat before the bird and began to speak slowly. His voice was soft and neutral, but within the tones held a mesmerizing rhythm hidden in them. Directing it all towards the raven, Typhus, he made sure he kept himself in an almost meditative state. "Have some more. I did not mean to bring any harm to you great lord. Please accept these as an offer of apology. I grant these to you of free will and wish to show you respect." With each word, he made sure that the proper tone and rhythm was produced. Any mistake and the mesmerizing tones would break, allowing the bird to escape. With a soft breaths between the words, he kept himself concentrated, making sure to not break the rhythm. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #14 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Pecking at the meat before it, Typhus made no noise save for the clacking of it's beak as it devoured the gobbets of meat. It's azure eyes glowed with an inner light, but they seemed to be glazed over, the mesmerism working on it. Excitement ran through Nikodemus, but he kept himself outwardly calm, his voice not wavering in any manner. As he continued speaking, the bird tilted it's head occasionally as if hearing the words and pondering them. It cawed occasionally, and then would return to the strips of meat before it. When it looked like the meat would be finished, Nikodemus took another piece from the package and would lay it out carefully, keeping it resupplied so the bird did not lose interest. His voice stayed neutral and calm, the words mesmerizing and rhythmic. Hope was with him that he would succeed. Edited May 20, 2016 by Nikodemus_Blackwood
Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 20, 2016 Author #15 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Feeling the bird's will begin to falter, Nikodemus spoke a few muttered words. As it finished, it shuddered and shook it's head, then cawed at him. It's glowing blue eyes gleamed with an inner fire and it hopped towards him, flapping it's wings and flying to land on his shoulder. With a smile, Nikodemus pet the large Raven's head. He smiled and was glad that he had been able to tame the new familiar. Re-attaching his helmet, Nikodemus stood and turned, the bird still perched on his shoulder. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 21, 2016 Author #16 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Moving along, Nikodemus and his new familiar made good time. Keeping himself ready at all times, Nikodemus gazed about for any mobs that may come forth to fight them. None appeared, but he would not be caught unaware. Moving through the stunted brown shrubs and across the blasted lands, Nikodemus watched the gravestones pass by with disinterest. His only goal now was to get back to the safe zone and return to the lower floors. Stopping for a time, he unequipped his trinket and basic steel shield, and returned his Scales of the Dragon God to his arm. Pressing forward, Nikodemus came over a hill and found himself staring down at a valley littered with many clusters of gravestones. Along them, many undead warriors moved about, tattered armor and rusted or broken weapons in hand. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 21, 2016 Author #17 Share Posted May 21, 2016 As Nikodemus moved the right edge of the valley and came around, he breathed a sigh of relief as he found himself clear of the valley. Moving between grave markers, Nikodemus found himself coming upon a blackened and dead tree. Typhus twitched it's head and then took flight, fluttering up to a branch and sitting there. Wondering why, Nikodemus held his hand out and whistled to the bird. Doing so, he heard the word "Danger" in his mind, Nikodemus looked around quickly and saw an undead warrior come shambling from behind an obelisk style gravestone. Bringing his axe and shield up, Nikodemus cursed and prepared to fight. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 21, 2016 Author #18 Share Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) With a curse muttered, Nikodemus charged forward at the creature before him. His axe blade began to glow a sickly emerald green as he charged his sword art <Lightning Axe>. As he came close to the beast, Nikodemus swung hard, his axe clipping the undead monster in the upper shoulder. His aim had been slightly off, but the force of his swing brought the blade in deeply. The beast howled as it was struck and smashed it's rusted sword into the side of Nikodemus shoulder. The blade did little to him but he still felt it. His armor's <Thorns> effect activated and sent a wave of damage through the being, knocking it back and stunning it. Taking a step back, Nikodemus growled and prepared to bring his axe down on the creatures head in a finishing blow. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 21, 2016 Author #19 Share Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) Not one to waste good fortune, Nikodemus charged forward and brought his axe down into the stunned creature. His blade began to glow the same sickly emerald color, and as he cut through the being, it zagged in a lightning pattern. When his blade exited the beasts side he shielded himself from it's attempt to stab him. It's blade bounded from his shield, making a minor knick on his arm as it did, and his <Thorns> once more shot through the undead flesh this time destroying the creature and leaving naught but pixels floating in the wind. Breathing deeply, Nikodemus shook himself of the pain he felt and then whistled. With a graceful move, the large raven glided from the tree and perched on his shoulder once more, it's azure glowing eyes peering about. With a smirk, Nikodemus began moving once more towards Angel's Point. Nikodemus_Blackwood 1 Posted May 21, 2016 Author #20 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Within a short time, Nikodemus came into view of the safe zone. He could already see Velika standing before her hut awaiting his return, and at the top of the hill, Tobar also stood waiting. Passing through the barrier, Nikodemus greeted Velika first. She raised a finger and stroked Typhus broad chest, cooing lightly as she did. The bird seemed to be happy, leaning into her finger slightly and chirruping lightly as she rub his chest. Thanking her, Nikodemus headed up the hill, his icy blue eyes meeting the topaz gaze of Tobar through his helmet. Reaching him, Nikodemus held his hand up in acknowledgement. "Hail Tobar. Meet Typhus, my reason for being here." The golden eyed man looked the bird over and then shook his head. "As Velika's apprentice, I had never thought to tame such a being. You did well." Accepting the compliment, Nikodemus patted a hand on the Holy Warrior's shoulder and departed his company.
