[SP-F9] An Infestation <<Bandit Camp>> .:COMPLETE:.

Recommended Posts

Nathan was continuing his quest to conquer various tasks in the game and this had brought him to the ninth floor. He had heard tale of a quest on the floor that involved the disposing of some unkind characters. All that he knew of the quest was that he was supposed to encounter some NPC in the fields of this floor and be told to deal with some bandits. Though, if that were all that was to the quest then it should not take him terribly long. He walked around the industrial-like Vulcan village and looked around. There was nothing of interest to him here, his work was towards the base of the volcano in the farming fields. Nathan quickly headed out of the village and left the hot crater of the volcano. Once outside of the village he immediately began heading down its slopes towards the fertile fields below.

Nathan headed down the slope of the volcano to the lush greenery below. It was amazing how something so destructive gave way to so much life, life which it could take within seconds of a change. Similar to the game he were stuck in, it gave cripples and others in a similar case the chance to live without their disabilities but the deaths involved with the game hardly made it worth it. Shaking his head of the thoughts, he pressed onwards and quickly reached the bottom of the slope. Once there he noticed a surprising lack of monsters and delved into the fields. As he walked deeper into the fields, still seeing little to no monsters anyone could fight, he eventually so someone standing off in the distance. They were just standing there with their sword in the ground and appeared to be staring around at the emptiness that was the fields of the ninth floor. That had to be the NPC that Nathan was looking for, the one that would give him the quest.

Nathan approached the warrior NPC and could easily see that something was bothering the man. As Nathan approached the NPC directed its attention towards him and began its dialogue that preluded the quest. "I do not know if you can tell, but it appears as though someone is killing off all the mobs in the area before anyone else can. I have heard tale of a group of bandits to the northeast of here that have been hogging all the farming locations and attack players who try to encroach on their domain. I would bet all my Col on the fact that these men are at the source of our problem. Please, if you have any honour about you, go dispose of these evil men and free the fields of the ninth floor." With that a small window popped up, informing Nathan of the quest <<Bandit Camp>> and its parameters and rewards. Four Bandits for a random Col drop, would not be a terribly reward to obtain for a not too terribly difficult task. He was certain he could dispatch of these bandits swiftly and effectively. Nathan hit the accept button and turned to the northeast.

Nathan trudged through the tall grass of the volcanic plains, admiring the lush green fields that thrived off the fertility of the volcanic dirt. He followed the quest marker, noting about when he was going to approach the bandit's camp. He was sure that he could take on all four at once if necessary but that would also prove recklessly dangerous so it would probably be smarter to, if possible, take them on one by one. He was not entirely sure how the sneaking mechanic would work in this game, though he knew it was definitely a mechanic in the game. Now was as good of a time to try it out and, maybe if he enjoyed the mechanic enough or saw plenty of use for it, he might put some more time and effort into it. The ability to sneak up on monsters, and possibly players, might turn out to be a truly profitable skill.

.:COMBAT INITIATED:.

Nathan slowly came upon the quest location so he crawled down in the grass, assuming that concealment would provide for a better stealth ability. He began crawling forward and, eventually, the boisterous laughs of men began to reach his ears. He crawled ever closer to the noise, the voices of four different men distinctly heard as he closed the distance. They were all loudly talking about the loots they had obtained earlier that day and seemed to be drinking quite a bit as well. He got within twenty or thirty metres of the camp border, a little bit farther away from the men themselves who were sitting at a fire in the middle of the camp. He wondered how he would attract the attention of just one and he rested his hand on a sharp rock. He almost yelled out in pain but held his breath for a few moments, hoping that no noise had escaped. After a few heartstopping moments he picked up said sharp rock and decided to try and lob it at one of the tents to get one of their attention. The rock sailed through the air and hit one of the main posts of one of the four large tents. Immediately, one of the bandits stopped laughing. "Hey, guys, did you hear that?" the bandit inquired. "Oh, for the love of God mate, you need to relax. We own these parts 'round here. There's nothin' out there that could take us down. Right guys!?" another bandit said and, with the last statement, rose the pints of mead they were drinking readily. The one whose attention Nathan had grabbed shook his head and picked himself up off the log he was sitting on. "I'll be back in a bit, I'm gonna go check that out." And with that the bandit approached the part of the field where Nathan was.

The lone bandit walked out of the perimeter of the camp, leaving his laughing friends at the fire. He looked around for any potential source of the noise but the drink was clouding his mind. Nathan crawled up right next to the bandit and stood up, immediately pulling Bloodletter out of its sheath with an almost silent rasp of steel on leather. Bloodletter was glowing its blood red glow already as it was drawn out of its sheath and in a blink of an eye it thrust forward three times and three times it struck the bandit in the center of the chest. The bandit let loose a startled grunt and was sent sprawling to the ground, his blade getting knocked out of his hands meanwhile.

The bandit hit the ground with a loud umph and had his air knocked out of him. Quickly, he scrambled to pick himself up and his blade along the way. Looking up he saw the armoured duelist coming at him yet again so the bandit swung out with his cutlass. Nathan had charged towards the bandit, expecting him to still be off balance from the sword art blow but was greatly mistaken as the bandit's blade passed through his chest. The blow did nothing but it did send Nathan reeling as he wanted to wince in pain. The blow was so minimal to his health though that it meant nothing to him. He missed his opportunity to attack a second time but he would not miss again. Nathan darted towards the bandit, rapier raised.

Nathan accessed the sword art system once more and quickly approached the first bandit once again, intent on landing another blow. The bandit had taken his eyes off of Nathan momentarily to call out to his friends but the call for help was cut short by Rip Ravine. Quickly Bloodletter passed through the bandit's torso, twice in quick succession, and left a red V on the bandit and dropped his health bar down even closer to the half point already. The bandit let loose a startled gurgle and backed off a few passes, swinging out with his cutlass but Nathan nimbly dodged the attack before it could land and deal any damage.

Nathan pressed on with his advantage and darted closer, closing the distance between him and the bandit which had been made by the bandit's stumbling. Once again, Bloodletter darted forward and was thrust into the bandit's should and quickly withdrawn. The bandit let out another startled cry from the relentless attacks and backed off even further, throwing yet another swing of his sword at Nathan but could not land the blow due to his off-balance and Nathan's nimbleness. Fear began to grow in the bandit's eyes as it realized that it was heavily underpowered in this one versus one scenario with the power of numbers behind him. Once again he watched the duelist dart forward.

Nathan darted forward and Bloodletter began to glow with the sword art once more and the bandit let out a small cry of fear. Quickly two more slashes were made in the bandit, leaving yet another red V in the bandit's torso. The bandit stumbled back even further, all the back tracking taking them further away from the camp and more into the fields where his allies would not be able to hear him call out for help as Nathan quickly cut him to ribbons. The bandit realized this and, after taking a swing, could only whimper as it passed harmlessly through thin air as Nathan dodged the attack once more.

Nathan pressed forward, not paying any mind to the NPC's whimpers, and accessed the sword art system once again. Bloodletter began to glow the usual blood red and Nathan darted forward quickly and in another blink of an eye Bloodletter passed cleanly through the bandit's torso three times and sent his health bar dropping even further. While Nathan was pressed up close the bandit swung out and was shocked to feel his blade connect with the player finally but instantly regretted it. For the small damage that he had done to the player he received an insane amount of pain, his health bar dropping quickly towards zero. The bandit cried out in pain and backed off even further away from the camp, his cries only heard by Nathan and the grass at this point.

Nathan pressed forward and thrust Bloodletter forward, knowing that just one more hit would finish the fight. What Nathan had not been expecting was for the bandit to stumble and fall to the ground. In his frantic retreat, the bandit had tripped over his feet and fallen so Bloodletter passed harmlessly over head and Nathan tripped on the bandit, tumbling over his head. Quickly Nathan picked himself up off the ground and looked at the bandit, who was still slowly picking himself up, and darted forward to finish the fight as quickly as possible.

The bandit finally picked itself up off the ground, retrieving his cutlass, and turned to see the player already bearing down on him. The bandit swung out with the sword and it passed through Nathan but did a negligible amount of damage so Nathan pressed on, not phased by the attack. Bloodletter was thurst forward and it passed cleanly through the bandit and its health bar passed zero. With a startled cry the bandit froze and dissolved into a million pixels on Nathan's blade, leaving Nathan alone in the plains. Without pause Nathan began heading back towards the bandit's camps, dropping into the grass as he sought out his next victim.

Nathan crawled through the grass towards the camp and heard the same laughter as before. None of the bandits seemed concerned for their comrade, just laughing at the fact that he was so skittish. Nathan listened to them joke and insult their fallen comrade and he began to be infuriated by the mindless babble. Even amongst NPC's there were injustices, which would make sense since they were made by man. He gripped the earth firmly in his hands and resisted the urge to charge in there and cut them all down at once. Stealth was the best option here and he realized it. Eventually his calm demeanor returned, replacing the sudden fury that had taken over him. He hated those few moments where he showed emotion because at those times the emotion was generally really strong and it took a lot of willpower to gather himself under control. After taking a few breaths, Nathan devised some way to draw out another bandit to strike down. He found a small pebble and opted for the same strategy. He threw it and it landed near one of the bandits. The bandit turned around and looked a bit confused and then seemed to realize something. "Guys, where's Thomas? He's been away for a while." Immediately the previous replier said, "Oh, sod 'em to hell. He was a coward. Probably skippered off to Vulcan for all we know." The bandit whose attention Nathan had obtained seemed a bit uncertain. "I'm going to go look for him, see if he's around and alright." With that the bandit stood up and headed towards the edge of the camp, leaving his drinking companions behind. Nathan crawled back a bit and waited to ambush the poor fellow.

Nathan watched as the second bandit walked away from the perimeter of the camp and out into the fields, waiting until the perfect moment to attack so that the other bandits would not join in the fight. Once the bandit was a few metres away Nathan arose from the grass and darted forward, Bloodletter glowing its brilliant red. The bandit turned around and pulled his cutlass out and slashed at Nathan, barely catching him on the arm. Immediately the bandit reeled back in pain as thorns took effect and Nathan drove the point of Bloodletter home thrice, completing the Accel Stub sword art. The bandit fell to the ground and Nathan watched as the bandit's health bar hit the half way point from the one round and then continued to drop as bleed took effect.

Nathan watched as the bandit reeled back from the massive damage it had taken and continued to sustain and quickly darted forward, intent on dealing even more damage before his adversary could recover. The bandit recovered quickly though and darted inside Nathan's circle, making his rapier next to useless since he could no longer thrust, and the bandit brought its cutlass across Nathan's stomach, leaving a red line which quickly disappeared. Nathan did not waste any time thinking about the attack, the source of any pain in this painless world, and simply darted backwards so that he was back into a comfortable distance that would allow him to attack at ease.

Nathan, upon reaching a comfortable distance, darted forward with Bloodletter singing through the air towards its target. The bandit snarled and charged forward as well, cutlass high in the air. The two met in the middle of their battleground and struck each other. The cutlass cut through Nathan's shoulder and thorns immediately took effect on the Bandit. Bloodletter pierced the bandit's heart and sent his health hurtling down to zero as bleed, thorns, and the basic attack took its toll on the bandits health. The bandit made one last gasp of breath, artificial as it was, and froze for a second before exploding into a million pixels upon Nathan's blade. Nathan, wasting no time, dove into the grass and crawled back to the camp, which was not that far away unlike the last fight.

Nathan crawled back towards the camp and he heard it was rather silent this time. He looked into the camp, towards the campfire, and saw that the two remaining bandits were there. The boisterous one, the one that had showed no care for the first bandit, was drinking heavily and mumbling to himself. The other bandit seemed lost in thought, most likely concerned for his comrades disappearance. Nathan picked up another stone and was about to throw it when he realized he did not have to. The quiet bandit stood up and looked at the drinking one, most likely the ring leader. "I am going to go for a walk for some fresh air. The ale is really getting to me." The drinking one waved him away, not seeming to care. He probably thought that he could buy more men anywhere, not knowing this was his last day on Aincrad... That was until he respawned for the next quest taker. Nathan crawled backwards through the tall grass as quietly as he could, watching the third bandit approach him and not wanting him to discover where Nathan lay until he was far enough away from the camp. Nathan was successful in maintaining enough distance to remain uncaught until the bandit appeared to be far enough away to be fought in peace.

Nathan picked himself up but tripped on a tuft of grass and fell to the ground, sprawling out on his stomach. He hurried to pick himself up but was pretty sure the damage was already done. Sure enough, at the sudden rustling of grass the bandit turned and walked over. He was surprised to see someone laying in the grass trying to pick themselves up. More out of curiosity than anything he slashed his cutlass across Nathan's back and recoiled instantly as thorns took effect and sent his health bar down a bit.

Nathan hit the ground once more as the cutlass went through his back, wincing slightly at the cold steel passing through him. Once the blade was clear though he sensed the bandit recoiling, most likely from the thorns. Therefore, Nathan tried picking himself up again but there was another sudden feeling of cold steel as the Bandit attacked once again. The bandit's cutlass sliced through Nathan's back and left another red line but, once again, the bandit recoiled from the pain and let out a startled yell as he stumbled backwards a bit.
