Translated, the word itzal means shadow. He chose this name in order to take a break from his online rivalry with a player named FearX, as well as trying to shed his more embarrassing username from his past, and bury both of them behind. His plan was to choose an assassin build in SAO until he discovered the truth of this world. Real Name: Felix Arno. While he genuinely loves his real name, priding the meaning of both his first name and last name together. Felix means 'happy' or 'lucky', and while he doesn't feel like 'lucky' describes him in the game, he relates to happy quite well. Arno means eagle, which Itzal himself translates to a symbol of freedom, typically from bondage. Before SAO he had never thought of America where he was born in. Now he thinks of it whenever he says his name aloud. Age: Twenty two at the start of SAO. To Itzal's perspective, or in other words in character perspective, five years have gone by. Therefore he sees himself as twenty seven years old. Regardless of what his true age is, Itzal cannot feel his age physically, and thus tells people that age in SAO depends on the maturity of the individual, and not their physical appearance. Birthday: December Seventh is Itzal's birthday in real life. In the game not only does he consistently forget his birthday, but it often brings sad memories to him when he recognizes it arriving. In the real world he consistently avoided his family and shut himself inside his room day after day, and was always grumpy during the holidays. This strengthens his desire to return home soon. Gender: Male. Height: 5'4 <<Biography & Personality>> The Farthest Back Felix can remember in his memories was the day he left his home in America for a trip to Japan. This was when he was only six years old, raised by a mother and father who worked with a company that focused on advancing technology. Well off and living comfortably, but not wealthy and luxurious either. He couldn't remember what brought them to Japan, whether it was a family vacation, Felix wanting to see Japan, his father having a business meeting there, some other reason, or a combination of all of the above. They rented a room in a hotel, explored, had fun, and enjoyed their first day in Japan. On their way home they decided to explore more by taking a shortcut, and then ran into someone. A dirty, ragged, malnourished man with emotional and aggressive eyes carrying a gun pointed at them. He had wasted no time asking for their belongings and simply started shooting. His father was the first to go, and before Felix could even process what had happened, his mother shoved him to the side and was shot next. If she hadn't pushed him aside, he would be dead too. Felix curled up in the corner of trash and junk even after the man took all he could grab and ran away. It was only when the police finally arrived when he crawled over to his parents and cried over them. The police tried to find his parents relatives in America, but with Felix not knowing any and no phone or identification to use, as well as the issue of locating someone overseas, they eventually gave up trying to do so. Finally, one officer offered to take the boy home with him until they could find a relative. It took over an hour for the officer to get Felix to finally talk, let alone stand up and walk with him to his car. He had called ahead and let his wife and daughter know of the situation, and gave him space as the seemingly lifeless boy followed the officer to his room. Days passed. Then weeks. Then months. Eventually the police gave up looking for his relatives indefinitely. Eventually Felix was forced to accept this new life of his in Japan, whether he wanted to or not. With much encouragement, support and love, his new parents helped him get into public school. Quickly establishing himself as anti-social, most of the kids avoided him, while a few of the older kids picked on him once or twice, though without much of a reaction they began to do so less and less. His parents claim he inherited their intelligence as he excelled at math and programming, language arts and chemistry. He took interest in the concept of advanced programs, and especially AI which was excitingly advanced. When he played a video game with a program that was surprisingly close to a legitimate AI, he was hooked and knew what he wanted out of life. He began to take extra classes when allowed, and spent most of his time outside his room studying and writing out his own codes from scratch. This however, drew the attention of bullies once more, and they began to persecute him worse than before. Not wanting to run crying to his adopted parents, Felix would watch tutorials on the internet for something called parkour, which gave him the ability to run away from the bullies without them being able to keep up with him. He used his weekends to practice, and eventually master this skill. While his mind grew and sharpened, and his goals slowly becoming more and more established, his relationship with his family didn't grow at all. His sister often tried to invite him to family activities, or give him something as a sister. She would often just walk in and watch him play video games in silence, or observe him writing a code, occasionally asking questions about it. While he would respond to her in these situations, sometimes with a smile with the excitement of his project, he never once reached out to her in turn. Holidays were often tense as he was mostly reserved, and rarely smiled. The most recent moment his adopted parents and sister saw his smile was when they pooled their money together to get him the Nerve Gear. The most advanced game ever written. The day after, every smile would fade away from the household. And it would be unclear how long they would need to wait before a smile returned to any of them. Discovering the truth of this life or death game, Felix now calling himself Itzal became even more distant and anti-social than before. He didn't trust anyone and didn't plan to trust anyone either. However this hadn't gone on for long before he was confronted by someone open and friendly. After a few encounters, Itzal realized how far behind he was, and for the first time became a part of a group. Slowly becoming more and more open the longer he stayed with these people, the feeling of friendship, and the security it provided him (as well as the comfort of not being alone in a game of life or death), began to fill the void of loneliness he was never aware existed. Throughout his time in Aincrad Itzal has grown more mature, more friendly, and stronger than he ever had been. In this way he is grateful to Kayaba, but can never forgive him for the thousands of deaths he'd committed by trapping the players in this horrifying world. As of today, Itzal comes across to others as friendly, encouraging, optimistic and analytical. He is very open towards other players, and is quick to forgive, as well as offer a second chance. He is actively ready to help another player in need, whether it be something as simple as finding additional materials, finding someone, or just having someone to talk to, to something as vital as stopping an ambush, saving someone from a quest or dungeon gone wrong, and so forth. This desire to help other players leads him to hunt down player killers and throw them into prison, though for certain individuals he does some background checks on them first before assaulting them. While Itzal can have arguments with his friends about how things should be handled, and no matter how distant they become, they are still very good friends in his eyes. Should any of his friends call him for help or aid in any way shape or form. He will be there as quickly as he can. When donning his alias Are (ar-ay) Itzal takes on a new persona. In order to better combat player killers as well as to keep those he loves safe from his enemies, Itzal only fights them when wearing his armor. As such, no one knows that it is Itzal who is going out every day and night hunting down, ambushing, combating, and imprisoning player killers. It is only Are. Similar to comic book vigilantes he uses this alias as a way to fight dangerous people without putting his loved ones at risk. While under the guise of Are, he does not appear gentle or kind, empathetic or the like. While this is not the case, it comes across as such by the way he presents himself, and because the emotions he displays through his smile and eyes are hidden by the dark mist that hangs under his cowl. Instead of these warm emotions, he comes across as cold, calculative, strict, and swift to take action. Spoiler At first glance Felix appears to be a rogue. Wearing dark and foreboding clothes, sticking to the shadows, and speaking quietly. However this is not who he is, and is in fact a disguise. Choosing to take on the alias Are (ar-ay) which his friend Zandra chose for him, he has taken on the life of a vigilante. Choosing to hunt down player killers and put them in prison to protect the innocent, Felix has a noble heart and always tries to see the good in others. While he acts more roughly as Are than he ever did as Felix, he still retains his caring perspective. Itzal has gone through many stages in his time in Aincrad (see story thus far), but overall he has never shifted from the change he had gone through during his first arc. Choosing to take on a life where he will never kill unless there is no other option, while it may make his life hard he abides by his own rules regardless of what others say and do. He also does not believe in leaving others behind, and seeks to aid those around him when they are in need of it. <<Virtues>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler <<Empathetic>> Compassionate/Encouraging It's no stretch to say that Felix has a heart of gold. After having experienced what having friends was like for the first time, and learning what it was like to have a family. Itzal has become an extremely compassionate and encouraging individual. Whether you are a random stranger in need of assistance. An NPC with a tragic background. Or even a player who turned dark because they lost their way. Itzal feels for people and wishes to help them. Perhaps not in their goals, but to help them find their way. He seeks to show them their way back to the light, and help them get back on their feet. Even as Are he attempts to do everything he can to guide people out of the darkness. If others are hurting he hurts with them. If others rejoice he won't hesitate to join in. If others take a stand against an evil he will fight beside them. Regardless of what the core of the issue is, he will always stand for others. <<Fighter>> Determination/Moral Heart Regardless of what Felix' strength, level or skill in anything is, if he sees a just reason to fight he will do so. If someone innocent is in danger, whether physically or morally. If someone is trapped and imprisoned. If someone has been killed and asks for their death to be avenged somehow. Felix won't hesitate to help them. Standing by his code of never killing unless necessary, Felix never gives up once he's set his mind on something. If he's determined something to be wrong then he will fight whoever or whatever that wrongdoing is. He will never truly harm friends or allies, but neither will he stand beside them if what they're doing is wrong. While he can be headstrong in his determination, he isn't foolish. If it's a fight he can't win alone he will seek aid from his allies and set a strategy beforehand. But never will he forsake anyone in need. <<Intelligent>> Quick Thinking/Analitical While Felix has never had friends in the real life, he has developed skills of sort. You don't just play video games and research how to make them for days on end and not learn anything. Felix is quite skilled when it comes to numbers and calculating odds, percentages, and even doing subtractions, additions, multiplications, divisions all in the middle of combat to try and gauge his enemy's health. He isn't the very best at it, but he is still skilled. Furthermore, he's also attained another useful skill. Being incredibly observant, and combining said observance with his processing knowledge and newly attained scouting skills, Itzal can analyze most aspects. Whether these be chances of survival or success, spotting crucial details on an individual, and notice anything out of place or of importance in the immediate area. This is a useful skill for him when he's gauging the danger of an individual or looking for weak points in combat. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Vices>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler <<Wrathful>> Reckless/Outburst Every good man and woman has their demons. Felix's own comes in the deadly sin of wrath. Despite being extremely considerate, empathetic, compassionate, encouraging, and despite his code of no killing unless absolutely necessary. Itzal does have a fuse that can run out if the right buttons are pressed. While it takes effort to make him snap, once he does his persona takes on a complete and total one eighty. Instead of aiming for constraint, he aims to force his opponent to submit and surrender. Instead of trying to persuade someone they are wrong and guide them to the right path, he lectures them and throws evidence as to why they are wrong at them. He does not listen often while in a wrathful state. His eyes are lost in an inferno with a shadow over his face. The way he looks, moves, and even sounds is enough to throw everyone off. <<Overcautious>> Overanalyzing/Overestimating While being analytical is a very potent strength of his, it can in fact go too far. Sometimes he can estimate the percentage chance of success, failure, and death, and allow his concern for any chance to die overwhelm him. This often leads himself to underestimating his own skills and stats, or the strength of his comrades. Many times he will stock up on hordes of consumables just to ensure his stats are high enough not to risk the death of himself. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it can cloud his thoughts and distract him, as well as slow down his leveling pace. This can also cause him to slow others down by accident, or even worse postpone important events until far later on. For floor boss fights this has proven an acceptable delay, and even some event bosses. But the fact that he's overly cautious about most quests can become a hassle. <<Doubting>> Ashamed/Overly humble This is not to say that Felix doubts other individuals excessively, rather it is the opposite. Felix puts his trust, faith and confidence in other individuals. It is rather himself he does not fully trust. Felix' self confidence is always waning, and many times his self pride nonexistent. He isn't afraid to speak about how his aid in the frontlines is rather pathetic compared to the others. Whether it be through skills, stats, gear, advise, leading, or even following. He always finds a way to lecture himself and will consistently push himself to do better. This obviously, is a very unhealthy way to live and could easily damage him should he ever operate completely and totally alone. Luckily Felix always surrounds himself with friends and allies whenever and wherever he can. After the announcement his reaction was not that of fear or terror. In his mind, the video game had only become real life, save for that the players were more empowered here than they were in the real world. Knowing that there were players in the game who would certainly use this strength to exploit their bloodlust, Felix actively pushed for increasing the strength of his build. Before he could begin his quest against these players however he encountered another player named Verus who helped Itzal adjust to the new game. Introduced to Adhae, Verus' friend, as well as meeting a player named Kooh, they began to train and adventure together. Felix's determination to hunt down and kill player killers however did not dissipate during his time with them, though it helped put the hatred aside in the meantime. This determination of his caused him to train solo when the group was relaxing, allowing him to skyrocket in terms of levels and skills, surpassing his group swiftly. Later on, he encountered a player killer named Teayre, and his hatred towards player killers was rekindled. Eventually Felix encountered another player while going through a dungeon. This player gave Felix his name: Jonathan, rather than his username: Morgenstern. The two of them decided to team up while in the dungeon and found that they worked rather well together. With a new friendship brewing the two friended one another and decided to end the day in a spar. During the second spar however, Itzal began to spiral down into a pit of rage thanks to an anomaly. Jonathan, after losing this bout with Felix, pointed out the anomaly and Felix promised he would correct it with haste. Swearing he would return once he had done so, he left and took the quest known as Calming the Soul. Once inside he fought his four inner demons: Terror, arrogance, resentment & wrath. The anomaly was evidently created by the cardinal system based on Felix's raw emotions. While it was an accident it was also very real for Felix. The anomaly was named Ulises, and acted as a split personality of Felix. Able to speak to him mentally and control their body when he allowed it to. With his anger in check and his desire to kill Pkers quenched permanently, Felix met up with Jonathan again and the two become very close friends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Celestial Arc>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler Felix became more interactive and open to people, meeting as many players as he could. During this time he encountered a young teenager named Alisa who was living on the streets when he met her. Ironically she also gave her name rather than her username: Mossino. Felix offered his assistance and began to train her, becoming her mentor in Aincrad. Lending her the space in his shop as a temporary living station, Felix not only trained her but grew a fatherly bond with her. Eventually during a conversation Jonathan and Felix came up with the idea of doing the same with many other players. To form a guild that was designed to help players get stronger, reach their goals, and forge a strong moral code that would help them reach their own goals through pure means. They would do this by taking on apprentices and helping them advance. The four founding players of this guild were Itzal, Morgenstern, Mossino, and Kasier. The guild was named the Celestial Ascendants. Instead of having a single leader, the guild was given a counsel of four. A DPS paladin, scout paladin, tank paladin and support paladin. Below the paladins were ______ and below those were apprentices. Within time the guild became quite known and began to grow in size swiftly. Later on Kasier gave Alisa a rough lesson behind Felix' back and caused him and Ulises to become enraged with her. Confronting Kasier directly their argument ended up causing a duel between the two of them. Kasier however had been slowly falling in love with Felix and ended up pulling him into a kiss when he stabbed her in the chest. While shocking at first, Felix returned the kiss. This sparked the love relationship between the two players. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Fire & Ice Arc>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler With the new relationship between Felix and Kasier, his life had changed forever. All of his free time was spent with her, and even when on duty his thoughts revolved around her. Alisa had unfortunately vanished without a trace, though it was clear she hadn't died. The guild continued to grow but resentment had begun to form between certain players. All the while Felix held tightly onto his relationship with Kasier. Felix took on two new apprentices named Aereth and Birdie. During this time period Felix struggled to adjust to being a boyfriend. Learning how to go on dates, how to have 'fun' as normal people did (which to his 'surprise' didn't involve searching for materials, grinding monsters for drops, col or experience, or dungeon/quest clearing), and generally learning to have a more social life. The two were opposites of each other, with Felix being openly passionate and taking action without concern, and Kasier being more reserved, shy and more thoughtful in her actions. Later on Felix encountered multiple other people. Two of these being Opal: a player killer who sought to save Aincrad by infiltrating the player killing guild Laughing Coffin and assassinating them all, and the master tank Calrex. Despite Opal and Felix having opposite perspectives, the two grew into friends, and Felix continually talked with her, hoping she would find peace and redemption one day. Calrex he discovered was Teayre, and through him learned that she wasn't what he originally perceived. Through Calrex he attempted to befriend Teayre and help Calrex guide her on the path to redemption. Over time the relationships in the Celestial Ascension began to mend. Felix had made a mistake which damaged his relationship with Kasier but it only lasted a short while. Afterwards she asked if she could move into his shop with him, and he agreed. Thus their relationship only grew more. Eventually Felix finally proposed to Kasier, and the two had a wedding together. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Cascading Arc> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler With time moving forward, everything in Felix's life began to crumble away. Aereth, his apprentice, had vanished a while back to hunt down player killers. Felix warned him what fate awaited him if he did so but he did not heed the warnings. While the Celestial Ascendants began to deteriorate, becoming more inactive and losing it's members, another group had begun to plot it's downfall. Lead by two players: Fearx & Chaos, these two players and their seven virtues and seven deadly sins, they began a plot that slowly divided the members of the guild. When the time was right, they launched an attack against them. Felix watched in horror as several apprentices and _______ were slaughtered in front of him. After having defeated Fearx, his greatest rival declared how he did not wish to live on. His first in command saved him from suicide however and gave him purpose again. Fearx and his seven virtues were out of the picture, but Chaos and his own forces were still a threat. Even though this was the case, the deed was done. The Celestial Ascendants broke up and Jonathan went missing. Later on Felix discovered that Birdie, one of his apprentices, had committed suicide. This drove him further to depression. Continuing onward, during the twenty third floor they fought against the elven council. During the fight, a player named Hirru of the Blood Oath guild, had determined that he would rather save the life of the young council member rather than defeat the bosses and thus opening a path through. This had sparked an outrage and outroar among the players, causing severe infighting left and right. Kayaba ended up rewarding Hirru of his actions, but everyone knew it wouldn't happen again. Felix was outraged at this action and even more so when Hestia, a more recent close friend of his, had defended Hirru rather than agreeing with him. Angered beyond reason it didn't help that Domarus was revealed to be a dominating tyrant warlord. Felix aided Hestia in fighting him and his remaining forces, and afterwards not only was Domarus converted, but Aereth was revealed to be a player killer now, and was now wanted. Making matters worse was the fact that a player named Adrian, an eleven year old serial killer, was now loose in Aincrad somewhere. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Shadows Arc>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spoiler With so much devastation, depression and confliction, Felix was lost. During an event boss, they fought against a Fallen Angel, and the lower leveled players against a possessed priest. They soon discovered that Kayaba had set this event up as a warning to players that bosses would no longer be easy. And as a demonstration, two players from both fights were killed and resurrected afterwards. Players tried to cover it up but Itzal spread the news himself. Bosses were going to be difficult from now on... During this fight he fought beside Zandra, a player he distrusted for some time due to her allegiance with Ariel. However he chose to give her a second chance now. After speaking with multiple people, including Mina, Zandra & Hestia, he stopped acting as Itzal and took on the alias Are. Zandra and Domarus are the only ones who know his real identity. Changing Velnia's color, element, and teaching her to be serious rather than carefree, he donned himself with a rogue like outfit and began using an American accent rather than a Japanese one.
