<<Floor 5 Armadillo Village>>

Meokka hid under her hijab from the beating sun. The music surrounded her. The drums, flutes, and that interesting twang like sound that seemed stereotypical for the middle east. She was surprised to hear the claimer or castanets, and the rattle of maracas. The desert was always lively. With yells from outside vendors. She saw players there and fond it interesting. They sold items for other people. For example the fisherman from the oasis had a warrior selling his wares while he the man waited for his HP to slowly refill. it was refreshing to see people helping each other. Meokka walked quickly through the sea of people in their silk clothing, and jewelry.  She people who looked like Cleopatra to Malala Yousafzai. Everyone was in full celebration with dance and song. Though everyone was also working as well. Trying to get coin with their flowery movements and dances. It was a sight that always left her breathless. She wanted to twirl and dance, but her stomach flipped. Having fun when she should be mourning. Tears rolled down her her checks in strips, as it cleared away the dust from her travels. Azure and crimson silk flooded her vision and the slender woman stopped with a jolt. Her amethyst eyes darted at the colors that spiraled  around her. She slowly lifted her hands up and narrowed herself as the silk grew closer to her. The sounds of a hang drum filled her ears and she slowly turned to his melodic call. She brought her hands down with her eyes shut tight, and the ribbons of silk cascaded to the ground, and retreated in ripples. The spear user rubbed her eyes and marched forwards. She only wished to visit the church of the dead in peace later today, and pay her respects. So she looked for a place to rest her weary legs.

She found a place on the road to sit. She watched both npcs and real children playing and dancing in the streets. Laughter filled the streets. Meokka just closed her eyes and listened to the bartering and ramblings of the golden sand road. The air was hot and devoid of moisture, and yet she felt cold. She longed for Ssen's touch once more. For his arms to envelop her. For him to pull her up for one more dance.

Our hearts entwined

Our souls shall rise

Love and Harmony shall fill this land.

With the gem of the beast, and the leg of lamb are the beginning of Vitae!

Vitae! Vitae! Vitae!

Together as one. Two hearts will sing. Together forever, and eternally!

Vitae! Vitae! Vitae!

Meokka opened her eyes hearing the song She wondered what was going on. The dancing has became more vibrent. There was more jumping and spinning. Many people where using their acrobatics with the silk. Meokka quickly moved back further away from the roads. She then looked at the people clapping around her. When did this all transpire. She had to stand up in a hurry as to not get trampled on. The people pushed her out into the road and she wasn't sure what to do. She dusted off and tried to get off the road as quickly as possible. She wanted to be left alone in peace. She through out her left arm and moved forwards. Letting her arm part the way for her.

Her hand collided with the back of an npc's head. Her legs did not stop and she collided with the npc Eril. The two stumbled to the rocky and sandy ground. Meokka sat up painfully, and looked to the NPC. Seeing as she didn't hurt him no one turned on her. She figured he'd go about his normal routine and stood up. She dusted off and fixed her hijab. As she went to apologize, as it only felt natural to do so Meokka jumped back. Eril was standing in front of her beaming at her happily. The old man seemed to creep her out. It was likely the fact his earlobes were stretched almost to his shoulders. She wasn't use to seeing anything like him before. He was taller than she was and seemed almost all knowing.

"Excuse me. Sorry about that." She was worried she did instigate something with the NPC. The last thing she wanted was a warrant out for hurting an npc

"It's all right my dear. I'm Eril the Prophet of Vitae. At your service."

The what?" Meokka wasn't sure what was going on, and the busy noise around her didn't help her comprehend his words any quicker.

"Do you not know what Vitae is?"

"Um...No. Should I?" Meokka asked confused.

"Vitae is only the most important part of this land! It means everything to everyone! Vitae is the heart and soul of love and life. This is the festival of Vitae where life is brought back to all who wish to have it. It's a celebration of love and life Ms. Meokka."

"I hate to tell you this, but I'm in no mood to hear this. This was a mistake to come here." She pushed past him and onlookers moved out of her path. Finally when there was a clearing she ran as far as she could until she tripped and fell to the sand sobbing. The ache in her heart far greater than the pain from the sandpaper sand that scrapped her knees, arms, and cheek when she had fallen. The world was so vastly empty, so much darker, even in the desert, without her Ssendom to fill her heart with joy.

As more people flocked to the streets she found her way to a small pound. It was were fishermen let their smallest catch run free for anyone to take. She knelt by it. She remembered the shrine in the real world. The one she cleaned to live at. A smile smile graced her lips as she remembered the koi pound. She didn't pray much until she lived there. It wasn't mandatory, but she did it out of respect for her new guardians. It was now she realized she hadn't prayed in a very long time. She thought herself immortal because this was just a game, but it wasn't. It was perhaps easier to die here than it was to die in the real world. In the real world there weren't monsters. Sure there were murderers but it was harder to encounter a hostile one, or was it? It was now she remembered she wasn't sure what the real world was like anymore. The people in SAO, they came from the real world, and some of them kill for pleasure, or as a means to fill their insanity. Be it because they themselves are afraid of dying, or some other deep rooted emotion that she couldn't possibly understand. Either way, the people in SAO, the killers, the backstabbers, aren't they the ugly reflection of the world she was trying to find her way back to? In that regard, both worlds are the same, and both worlds are equally ugly.

Meokka remembered the festivals and the bond she had with the ones she left behind. Then remembered the happy faces of this place. No matter how ugly the world was, there was also a sparkle in it. She couldn't give up home. Meokka breathed in deeply through her nose and exhaled calming her nerves.

"That's why I'm here. I won't throw myself from large heights. I won't walk into danger without thinking. I can't wallow too long in this pain, but, I must stay in it to heal. At least now Ssen will not have to worry about me....He won't have to....He...."

It was no use. The scar over her heart ripped open. She was not ready to accept it. She refused. She should have been stronger. Then she could have been at his side. Ready to help him. She should have died with him.

Her ears began to ring as she thought of that. The face of Oda was in front of her, and she gasped with her eyes wide. If she had done that....All that money the must be putting in to keep her alive would have gone to waste. She'd have to learn from this. She loved Ssen. With all her heart. She still did. Though for his sake. For the sake of her family. She could not be that reckless. She'd have to climb the ranks and get stronger, but perhaps the bosses weren't part of her life in the end. She always had these grandiose ideals, joining the front lines, but not now. Now, she had to survive. She had to stay on par with people around her.Her world was shaken and she had to have her feet find even ground, and quickly, because this game didn't wait to end the lives of many.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes again. Praying to Ssen to watch over her.

Ssen, please, watch over me. I'm sorry I'm not as strong as you. I might not ever make the front lines. I may never find out who killed you. I will do my best though. I've always saw myself as a harbinger of justice and truth, but that was a facade I wear over my face. It's my inner truth that I want to convey to the world, but I have no courage to enforce it. I'd like to promise revenge. I'd like to promise glory, but I'm afraid. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you my love. May your angelic wings give you freedom from this place forever. I love you. Take care.

She sniffed as she restrained herself from crying once more. She knew that Ssen wouldn't like to see her in tears. Her body trembled trying to resist the urge to scream her sorrows. She rubbed her eyes full of sadness, and when she opened them she saw someone sitting on the other side of the pond. Meokka flinched at the surprise, but quickly collected herself. It was another NPC. This time a small child named Hedat. He smiled at her.

"It's okay to cry on Vitae." he said calmly.

His voice was quiet and soothing. Meokka was surprised how quickly she felt at ease.

"I'm sorry....I don't know what Vitae is.....Could you tell me?" Meokka asked.

"There are many parts of the Vitae holiday. We celebrate life on this holiday. First in dance and song. At night though everyone is to find a lilypad at the Oasis. There are lilies that don't have a bulb in bloom. Those lilies are the ones that are suppose to be picked." Hedat explained. "it symbolizes a loved one who is not with you in this world, but that is only temporary." he smiled at her happily. "Because Vitae, is the celebration of life, love and harmony. Eventually that lily will bloom and just like that." he snapped his fingers. "Life."

"it can't possibly be that easy. If it was everyone would have done it by now." Even though Meokka spoke those words out loud a secret place in her heart told her otherwise. Told her to have faith. Maybe there was something that no one had known about. After all, not all the floor had been revealed, and there were many secrets. Who is to say the game wouldn't change it's own set of rules. She bit the inside of her cheek.

"Tell me more." she urged Hedat to speak. "What do I all have to do?"

He brought up a quest screen. She looked it over carefully. She noticed there was a great deal of moving around for the quest, and there was no garentee. She saw it mention the church, but no one had ever gone inside of the place. What did that mean? Meokka kept reading to make sure she understood the details. She was curious to why she had to gather so many materials.

"Anything that befalls you is of your own accord? That's weird, I've never seen a warning this this before in SAO. Why is that Hedat?" Meokka asked curiously.              "I'm not the programmer I'm afraid. I just do as I'm instructed. Though I believe it's because this is a very dangerous quest. After all the point of it is to get the gem of Vitae." He explained.

Meokka looked at him for a good long while. What did Vitae mean? How did this come about exactly? Given how SAO seemed to work off of lore and mythology for the most part, and literature she wondered if it had to do with the Ferryman himself. Though she didn't think there was anything tying to that word. She opened up her menu and did a search for Vitae. Curious if it would bring up anything at all. There was another quest called <<Into the library>> which could possibly give information on the holidays of SAO and was often a quest skipped due to the copious amounts of reading. She looked to him one last time.

"Will you be here later?" Meooka asked him.

"I will be on the roads dancing with those around me should you wish to partake in the quest. However I will only give the quest on the days which we have the celebration. I hope you understand."

Meokka nodded and smiled. She'd understood it was best to be prepared instead of going head first into something she did not understand. With that she canceled out of the menu and got up to run to the library of the village which was was easy to spot due to it's dilapidated nature...

She looked for the library, but not the built up library. She knew of one that was mostly destroyed and looked like ruines. The roof of the building was completly missing, and there were large cracks in the walls. Large enough for her to walk in with another person next to her. As she did so she marked an item for her map to search for. This function made it easy to find npcs and certain quests, and thanks to her previous encounter she knew the book was tied to the quest. Though it wasn't necessary to have it Meokka found that it would be wise to read up on what this festival was really about, and to learn what she was about to get herself into. She scanned the shelves for the book but it didn't seem to appear anywhere. Though her cursor indicated that she was right on top of it. The bluenette scratched the top of her head then looked upwards. She climbed some of the shelves and that's when one of them gave way and she plummeted to the sandy floor.

Meokka rubbed her rear and sat up on her knees with a seething noise. "I landed right on my gold pouch." She slowly got up and dusted herself off of any sand that tried to cling to her or her clothing. She looked again at the cursor. it could anywhere within a two kilometer radius, so that meant she had over a mile to cover. She gave out a light sigh and looked around the room, but a inkling in the pit of her stomach made her return to the spot she had been searching. "Lets see, if you're not on the shelves, could you be buried?" Meokka got on her knees once more and started digging for the book, but she felt she was digging for some sort of relic. This brought a smile to her face as she always toyed with the idea of being a Indiana Jones.

As she dug her fingers met a hard leathery surface. She dusted off the worn and faded book and opened it up. She couldn't make out the writing easily, and used the captions option. Floating above the book was a new screen that had a PDF version of what was written. Meokka leaned back and stayed sitting. She watched and would wave her hand to flip the fake pages of the pdf file. It made her feel rather nostalgic. It was like reading a book, but she felt nothing but air. The memory was drawn from her fingertips as she kept reading. Tears welled up in her eyes. She was amazed how something so simple could cause her to feel this way. A sad smile graced her lips.

<<Vitae>>

During the days of old there lived a wood elf named Vi. She was perceived as a goddess among her people. The days counting down to war were upon them. Banishment from the woods was normal if one wished for peace. Accept for Vi. Instead Vi was locked away. Her skin turned ashen white without the sun's glowing smile on her skin. Her hair became knotted and her eyes heavy. She knew that she could not live a life such as this. The thought of hanging herself crossed her mind until the day she heard running. As she stood up, her frail frame seemed almost able to break with just the wind alone. Vi saw a man. Bathed in white, and fully covered from head to toe. She ran over to the bars which gave the intruder a startle. The bars gave a resounding clang, and the guards murmured among each other and went to check on who it was. The masked man bathed in white stood slowly to face the guards as they approached. His presents in the room caused the guards to freeze. One ran away while the other stayed behind. That was until the man placed a heavy hand on the hilt of his sword. This caused the elf to flee in a panic. With that he started to walk about but paused when he heard the shrill cry for freedom. He walked back to the bars and struck them with his sword splitting them enough for the woman to walk through. He apologized that he could not be held accountable or responsible for her and ran away. She faintly whispered she understood, and because of that thief in the night stopped dead again. He turned back and saw she was gone. The thief Tae had a choice. Protect Vi from the shadows, or steal every treasure that consumed the castle walls. Without batting an eye, he choose her. Together they would form a union. A union of Life, and it would be called Vitae.

"So...Vitae means life." Meokka stated. "I'll read more on it later I guess. At least I know it's a celebration of life then." With that she made her way to the town square to find the NPC she needed. For Ssen, she'd bring him back to life. If it meant doing a hundred quests. She'd do it.

She closed the book and stored a copy of it in her inventory. When she looked down she noticed the ground had shifted once more, and a quest book was hiding yet again. She smiled finding that a neat little trick on the developers part. With that she went off to find Hedat, the desert child she had run into earlier. There she saw gypsys and belly dancers. The bards were making a killing today, and she watched the festivities with interest. There were fire breathers and jugglers. Exotic companions as far as the eye could see. Her heart twisted. Perhaps she should try the quest again to gain a companion. She inhaled deeply and watched as the town torches turned on. Nightfall was now upon them, and there was a chill in the air. The desert winds were always so bitter, and yet the festivities went on. She didn't have much time to accept the quest now. It was then she noticed Hedat standing before her. She nodded to him and the quest appeared again before her.

"You gain nothing without trying."

Her finger pressed the button, accepting the quest. He just smiled at her and took her hand.

"The trial by fire opens many people's eyes. Please come with me, we haven't much time."

As she was lead outside of the city with the NPC she was a little surprised. She supposed nothing bound them to the city walls, and yet she found it strange. She looked at him curiously. They had come far enough outside of the city to not be disturbed. She double checked to make sure he was an NPC after all, and he was. "Hedat, why have we come so far outside of the city? Is this natural?" she looked around at everything around them. There didn't seem to even be mobs in this area.  "This is completely normal, besides, if it wasn't you're the one that already said any outcome was okay. You accepted the terms of the quest after all." Hedat replied.     "I see. So why are we here? There is no fire for me to walk, or will you preform some sort of sword art to test me? I'm ready." Meokka summoned her spear and watched him like a hawk. Ready to pounce and prove she was worthy of this mythical item.                                                                                                                        "There's no need for that yet Meokka." instead Hedat folded his hands together. "Share with me your tale, the flame of memory, and the spark of life. Vitae." He said in a childish shrill.

A red ball that had fire twist and turn around it appeared before them. With red smoke trendrals flicking and dancing at it's top. Meokka stared at it in aw. Never had she seen something like that in SAO. Hedat looked at her and gave her a large childlike smile. "Your first task awaits you. Try not to get burned!" He smiled happily.

Meokka nodded and walked up to the sphere. She called her Spear away and placed her hands out in front of herself. The heat reminded her of the forge. How she ached to craft again. She licked her lips feeling revitalized from this alone, and inspiration coursed through her veins. She pushed through, and felt the fires grace her skin, and yet it was not seering pain. In an instant her <<Survival>> skill activated, and a light red aura encompassed her. Though when she opened her eyes, she was no longer the woman she thought she was.

When Meokka awoke she found herself in front of a door. She turned her head as waves of blonde hair turned in a sharp movement. Dressed in rags the Elven crouched down when she heard voices. She quickly moved to a wall and waited quietly with a hand over her mouth. The guards turned and where running down another hallway. Her escape was so close, and yet if she opened the door now she feared they'd hear her. After several seconds the door broke up with a guard in front of it. She turned to the noise and saw a tall robust wood elf grinning at her. That's when it happened. The candles in the room were suddenly extinguished. It didn't take long for the elf's eyes to adjust to the sudden change, and what she saw startled her. The man in white fell upon his pray like a spider. his cape enveloped around the himself and the man. There was a sudden twist of leather. Down the hall she could hear the guards speaking.

"What was that?"

"Probably rats."

"Noisy buggers aren't they?"

"Who cares they can pick the flesh off the bones of the deceased and we don't have to worry about it."

"Just shut up and keep looking for the princess."

"Hey I just noticed this now. The candles are out."

The princess's eyes moved from the direction of the guards to the white cacoon like cape. It wavered slightly and the body was slowly moved to a cleaning closet. The Princess stared at the man in white, and he outstretched his hand towards her. She quickly grabbed onto his hand without hesitation. He lead her down another hall way. His footsteps light and silent. Once they reached the stairs the Princess went to move away but he held her steady. Without missing a beat the man in white picked up the princess and stood atop the banister and made his way upwards without even a crack of a sound. He moved like the wind and only paused after the second window. It was ground level, and it lead out to a hedge maze. He lifted the princes up through the window and followed her himself. He pointed and ran with the princess after she stood up. He had a firm grip on her hand and felt as though she were falling with every step, but she wanted to live so badly. Ahead her ears twitched at the sound a voices, and with a quick spin she found herself in the cape of her liberator. He activated his <<Disguise>> skill and the guards walked past them naturally. He waited, and held her close. It was then she looked at him straight on. He had the gentlest of golden eyes. What skin of his face that should could see was as midnight as the sky. A dark elf. Likely with hair of snow. To think her father wished to kill such lovely people. As she waited on baited breath he made a move and pulled her along again until they had ran right out of the city and into the heart of the forest, and only once there did the running finally stop.

"Thank you so much for-"

"Quiet, you should rest, and eat. Save your energy so we may ride to the deserts with the wind behind us." He pulled off his white hajab and his white and purple hair fell in ribbons. It was then the princess realized she was rescued by a woman with soft features. "Here, dine with me." The woman sat down and brought out a pouch that had provisions for them both to enjoy.

After the two dinned together in silence the princess laid her head down. It was cold but she dared not complain. A fire might attract the guards to them. As she kept her eyes closed and curled herself. She heard a sudden hissing noise. She woke up quickly ready to run. Her savior was rubbing her back against a tree in pain. The princess quickly got up and went over to look. She twirled her finger telling her companion to turn around without words. At first she hesitated, and watched the wood elf prisoner, but then turned around begrudgingly. The princess moved the white shirt upwards and saw something living inside Her liberator's back. She stared in horror.

"How bad is it?" Tae asked, with beads of sweat pouring down her face.

"There's something alive back here." The princess whispered back.

"So one of the guards did see me." Tae swore under her breath. "How big is it?""

"Melon sized. What is this?"

"It's a bug. That grows inside of you. Then rips you open to feed on you. They forced us to move north where the buggers couldn't survive. Even if they burrowed into you, it wouldn't be warm enough for them. We'd make sure."

The princess moved to start a fire.

"What are you doing. You'll attract everyone."

"Then we'll run."

"Look moron I'm dead anyway just go then."

"If you're dead then you won't mind if I stay with you."

Tae wasn't sure how to respond to that. It wasn't a lie after all. She watched the princess start a fire on a torch, but then she extinguished it with dirt. She ran over to Tae and lifted the back of her shirt once more, and trusted the torch against the the bulge. With a sudden scream of pain the spider creature twisted in Tae's back. She screamed again and the creature expelled itself from her. Blue fragments burst out of Tae and she feel. Vi quickly caught her from falling, but her weight caused her to fall as well. The spider scuttled towards them in a flash. It's mandibles crushing the blue data fragments drawn to it like a mosquito to blood. The princess pulled Tae further away from the creature, and slowly the two stood. Tae had her arm over Vi's shoulder and the hobbled away while the spider was distracted.

"Just leave me. Those things put out a poison, and you can't get rid of it. No potion can cure it. You can take potions till you die once you sleep." Tae growled.

"What's your name?"

"A name means attachment, just drop me already woman."

"I'm already attached. I'm Princess Vi. Now your name. Tell me."

"........Hmph....I go to steal a treasure and I find the rarest by mistake....Tae, the Banished."

"I know of a temple in the desert. You can make a deal with Hedat."

"Hedat?"

"The child Hedat, the spirit of Death. Unlike the ripper he envokes change, but at a price. It's always at a price, but for my freedom, I'll do anything for you. Tae. We're one now. Understand."

"One?"

"Where you go, I will be your shadow. If you fight. I fight. if you eat. I eat. When I recover my strength you can count on me. A few potions...I'll be fine."

Tae watched her for a moment and handed her a potion. WIth that Vi snatched it up and drank one use from it. Then gave the rest to Tae who quickly drank the reaming two. The bottle shattered but the two felt reborn. For now. Tae's health was slowly dropping.

"Take me to this Hedat. I'll do whatever it takes. You've made me curious to see the light of day with you at my side.....Vi." Tae smiled.

Meokka's body fell from the orb. She was on her knees and disoriented for a moment. She looked up at her name. She had no idea SAO had movie like quests. It was breath taking. Everything had surprised her. Tae, and the spider, but most of all the child Death. Her eyes widened and she turned to see him standing over her. With a larger spider than the one in the memory, or movie, behind him. She waited on baited breath for a moment, and he helped her up. Death gave her a sad smile and motioned to his spider. Meokka was begining to understand. She'd have to endure a fight, just like Vi and Tea had. Even though they ran away, she could tell by Death's gaze that she was not meant to run, but to show him her determination. The bluenette snapped her fingers to summon her spear and she got in position ready to strike.

"Good luck Meokka....I'm sorry but you must be tested."

"As always. I'm ready." She braced herself.

The spider skittered forwards against Meokka who stood in front of the remnants of the flaming orb. It stopped as if remembering the burning sensation of the torch and took a step back in fear. Death looked at the spider with interest. He just smiled finding that interesting. "Here I weaved to bring it's data to create a bigger version of it, and it still remembers. Perhaps monsters and you humans are very much alike. Now, which one of you can learn quicker?" Death asked comparing the human mind to artificial intelligence.
Meokka looked at him for a moment and lowered her spear. She remembered Ssendom. This was for him, and data versus a human life was far more important.

Meokka twirled her spear over her head several times. As it spun around, it gathered the smoke billowing behind her. Her spear was now a veil of darkness, and she felt nothing for this creature. She inhaled and exhaled the smoke. The embers relit as they came from her mouth, but it was only for a moment. She held held her palm now flat. She could feel her spear balancing on her hand with ease and it tumbled down her arm as she bolted forwards. She used her other arm to catch it but kept it's momentum until she came close enough with the spider. She thrust her spear and herself forwards, activating her fatal thrust skill. The spider seemed frozen in place from the attack. Meokka just smirked. She knew she didn't do a lot of damage to it, but it was a start.

Seeing the Mob was now stunned Meokka went for another all out attack now that she was behind the spider. She tossed up her spear and and jumped after it. Once it made contact with the monster she used the base of the spear to turn her body on the pole arm. Her legs kicked one of the legs clean off the monster, and she rolled under her spear removing it from the spider. Swinging it downwards on it twice placing an x on it's forehead. She then aimed for that very spot and thrust herself forwards, and her spear connected with the the mark on it's head. Blue fragments exploded from the spot, but the creature did not budge still.

The spider pushed forwards against Meokka's spear. It's mandibles clicked at her, and it backed away cautiously. Death looked at the spider. "Perhaps I should have made you a bit tougher. It's funny really, the one that gave the princess and her lover so much trouble was half your size. You are disappointing me." Death chastised the Spider. Then looked to Meokka who was just smiling like a wild animal. She replied to him. "My tenacity has this effect on many monsters I've faced. So perhaps this is destiny. I will bring Ssendom back from the grave." she felt more empowered to fufill her quest. Even if it seemed to be a very long shot. The spider jumped at her, but it was too bottom heavy to get close at all. "Now it is my turn spider. I get no pleasure in this. Forgive me, I'll try to make this quick. Hold still." She commanded.
