I think most of the time we just assume you have at least some prior knowledge of the SAO universe before you join. To answer your question though, yeah the characters are stuck in a virtual reality game. It's not really casual either as the only ways out are either by dying or conquering all 100 floors of the tower they're trapped in. Try reading the wiki page if I wasn't helpful.
