Quest: The Monkey King

Baldur had walked this route before. The high rope bridges that lead away from the main settlement and down to the lower, forgotten one that hung just above the swampy waters at the base. His friends had walked these very same steps that he now walked. Baldur often thought about what happened to @Crozeph or @Raeyliff. Thankfully he had managed to reconnect with Ariel and Oikawa, but the team didn't feel complete just yet.

Glancing down, he looked at the azure badge pinned to his haori, marking him as the azure knight of the spectrum coalition. He wasn't quite sure how he felt about that yet. He knew and trusted Calrex, and he had trained his kouhei to the best of his ability, he would need to trust them now.

Deep below him, lost to the haze, was the fog that blocked the view of the thick, viscous swamps below. The monkey king waited down there, but first he would need to work his way down to him, and the monsters only got tougher the lower they went.

Preparing himself, Baldur dropped from the platform he was at and activated <<charge>> mid air as he flew towards his prey. The camouflaged <<Forest Stalkers>> that were hanging in a pack below him. His sword burned with the blue light of the sword art as he crashed into the midst of them and his AoE reduced them to polygons. His loot bonus didn't seem to help that time, but the materials would. Glancing around, he prepared for combat with more of them.

As Baldur continued to descend the trees, he saw the swamp come into focus. There, more bridges connected from tree root, to tree root and the walkways were loose plank, instead of rope bridge. The whole area had the feeling of some swamp bayou mixed with B horror movie special effects. The environmental artists were trying to creep you out down here, and Baldur remembered well what stalked them beneath the placid waters.

Landing onto the deck, Baldur took a point of falling damage, but was immediately in motion as he <<charged>> the nearest group of <<Bog Striders>>, his sword exploding with azure light as he jumped into their midst and executed his <<Gen Getsu>> sword art, the arcs of light coming off of his sword cutting through them as if they had no armor what so ever. Seeing him tear them apart put a bit of perspective into Baldur. A long time ago they had come here, and it had taken the full group of us to to kill even a single one. They would have been terrified of facing 4 at once.

"Well I guess that means I've made some advancement after all."

Now that Baldur was at the very bottom level of the floor, the real danger began. If he lost his balance and disturbed the waters, he could face real trouble in an unending surge of those assassin creatures. What had they been called? He couldn't remember. But this part of the swamp was different as well. Where as before there had been a little old settlement down in the bottom and they had continued towards the labyrinth, this area seemed to have been subject to a rampage. There were broken pathways littered around the area, and several of the trees lower branches had been broken off. In one area near a tree a foot step so big appeared that the mud was actually enough to divert the water.

"Wow... That is a biiiiig monkey king."

His steel eyes lingered on the giant paw print. He had expected something bigger than him, but not something on the King Kong level! Well, this quest shouldn't be beyond him from what he had seen, and thankfully he had more consumables on him if he needed additional help, though he would be loath to burn up more boss level consumables. It hadn't ever really struck him before to use up lower level pots for his farming and easier quests. He would have to stop by Rain's place to put in an order.

"Right now though, it's all about the XP."

Baldur walked along the rickety wooden planks as he wound his way around the bottom of the flood. Moss clung to the trunks of the trees and hung from branches of tree trunks which had toppled into the swamp. The gnarled roots snaked up and down through the water as if they were alive and above him the trees were so tall and the branches so many that he couldn't even see the sky. It gave the whole area a dark and gloomy feel. The environment did nothing to put Baldur on edge, but he did love this kind of atmospheric detail. He felt immersed in his quest, rather than the feeling of just grinding another boss in the field.

Ahead of him, slowly emerging from the bog, were the Striders. They had huge carapaces and long, clawed fingers on hands that were already way too big. Giant maws took up a sizable portion of their bodies and they were nightmare fuel for most people. Thankfully, Baldur had no such issues. He had conquered that a long time ago with his friends when they had fought their way through plenty of these.

"Here I go!"

He grit his teeth then <<Charged>> into the midst of them, the azure light of his <<Gen Getsu>> flashing through them all with the arcs of light, exposing their red wire mesh for a moment. Quickly, Baldur whipped the sword around in a chiburi and then sheathed the sword slowly, watching them and counting down the moments and the heartbeats until they shattered into polygons.

One of these days I will get the timing down.

Now that his path was clear, Baldur took a moment to examine his new surroundings, bringing to bare his new <<Search and Detect>> skill. More mobs showed up on his map at the edge of his senses, but Baldur was more interested in trying to track down the monkey king. He needed a minute to regain his energy before he could withstand more combat. The trees loomed large around him, and when he paused so that he could pay attention to the sound he discovered just how eerie the quiet could be.

The sound in this game was amazingly accurate. They had done a great job of engineering, which meant that this quiet which had settled over the bog he was in was intentional. The slight rustle of the breeze, gentle lapping of the water, and nothing that was moving - no monsters or animals. The lack of any kind of animal sounds was what was the most bothersome to Baldur. The chirps of birds or the light, soft melody of animals in the background was usually omnipresent, and when it wasn't there was always some field music to fill in the ambiance.

There was nothing here.

He continued down the ramshackle path... if one could call it that. The boards upon which he walked were periodically broken and needed to be leapt over in order to safely make the landing. There were a couple of close calls, so now Baldur jumped with his sword out so that he could hook it into the wood if he needed a hand. He didn't want to fall into the water and invite more of those assassin mobs they had fought before. They weren't especially dangerous to him, but he didn't want to bring that down on him when he had no energy. It would take forever for him to fight them off at base damage, or else he'd have to start using energy recovery consumables.

As Baldur came around a particularly large tree, he saw something that defied belief. Several of the massive, hundred foot tall trees had been uprooted and knocked down together to form a giant widow maker. It was as if a cave had been made of trees that were easily twenty to thirty feet across and hundreds of feet tall. How had he missed a sight like this after all the time he had spent on this floor.

"Wow... well... this must be the place, but he doesn't appear to have spawned yet..."

Often times there was a proximity, or something you had to pick up in order to get the boss to spawn. Was this such a place? If they did it well, he might never know, but he had never heard of anything like this from any of the info-brokers.

Baldur crept closer to the giant tree wigwam shaped nest. The closer he got the more awed he was by the size of the structure. Some castles were surely not this big. How large was his king kong monkey king monster? As he neared the nest of the <<Monkey King>> the logs and fallen trees and pathways died away. There were a network of stones he would need to navigate in order to make it to the wigwam.

"Ugh, this looks bad." Baldur paused for a moment on his last spot of solid ground and knelt down to examine the situation. He stopped so that he could look around, and listen closely, stretching his senses to their limit just so he could tell if the boss were nearby or if there were perhaps mobs lurking in the water. He didn't want to jump on a rock only to discover that it was a bog strider. He would need to focus on the boss, and dividing up any damage for AoE would be a sure fire way to make him run out of energy before the boss died, and that could be dangerous.

"Well, here goes everything." He said to himself as he stood up and lept quickly from rock to rock, working his way quickly, but carefully, towards the base of the wigwam which seemed to be a solid floor of rocks, branches, leaves, and monkey fur. Yet when his booted and armored feet landed on the surface, it was blissfully sure. Apparently this fight didn't need to be more challenging due to environment.

"Thank the environment designers." he said as he let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.

Baldur had just made it to the landing and was looking around when suddenly his search and detect skill made him very aware of a mistake he had made. Whirling around, Baldur saw the <<Monkey King>> swinging down from up above approaching its lair far faster than he was going to be able to get away and the king looked pissed.

Tsk.

Baldur clicked at himself in annoyance. He should have expected this to be the case. Quickly throwing himself to the side, he rolled away as the <<Monkey King>> suddenly crashed down beside him where he had been standing only a heart beat before. The giant white haired monster glared at him with sinister red eyes.

"HUMAN TRIBE! YOU DARE INVADE MY TERRITORY! NOW I WILL DESTROY YOUR HOME!"

The giant king kong sized monster beat his chest and threw up debris in a very gorilla like fashion as he threatened Baldur and the settlement above. He had, however, never stopped moving. Baldur came up from his roll and immediately his body knew what to do. All those lessons in Iaido and Kendo in real life rarely came in hand in combat situations here in SAO, but this was a situation he was familiar with and so his body was able to react in the most efficient movement possible.

Executing a reverse sword draw technique, which boggled his mind the first time he had seen it performed in the real world, Baldur seamlessly transitioned from a roll away from the boss into his <<charge>> position and launched at the boss just as he was finishing his monologue. The boss had thrown his hands in the air with more debris, but Baldur plowed through the bits of branch and leaves as if they weren't there; Susano'o blazed to life with blue light as the black and red steel was bared from the saya and he attacked on his draw with the <<Iai>> maneuver, too fast for any eye to follow as he struck the boss in the neck. Twisting his body, Baldur found that the boss was big enough for him to land on as his blow sent the off balance and now stunned king kong to the ground.

Baldur didn't give the <<Monkey King>> another chance to act. It was stunned, and so Baldur was going to steal this opportunity. <<San Ge>> was a six attack sword art that ended with a powerful vertical chop, only now Baldur was standing on the upper chest of the giant. He moved without hesitation or remorse as he charged up the creature. It was so large he could stand on the neck of the king and it's chin was the size of a normal mob.

"This is the end of the line for you!"

The black and red blade once again shone with azure light as his blade carved out a slash in every direction, ending with Baldur giving a slight leap and a full body attack onto the head of the <<Monkey King>> his attack carving down the side of the simian head and exposing the wire frame mesh that made up its digital body. Had the body been real, it would have been a gruesome attack that would have sickened Baldur, but here there was no blood.

As Baldur stood, still caught up in the moment as he whipped his blade to the side in a chiburi, the giant monster shattered into thousands of polygons and a rainbow of pixels floated around him. He inhaled and exhaled deeply, trying to let the adrenaline subside as he sheathed his blade. It took him a moment before his shaking hand could release the blade.

Once again silence settled over the bog. Baldur could hear the gentle lapping of swamp water as it settled against the mound of the monkey king, quietly receding into stillness after being disturbed by the impact of the giant gorilla thing. As the silence hung over him, the feeling of the heat and humidity hit him as well, and then slowly the sounds of nature began to fill in. The chirps of insects and the whistle of birds felt to Baldur as if a cool wind blew over him to part the humidity. It was still hot as hell, but it was the psychological effect of nature 'relaxing' that cause him to feel more at peace with his surroundings, and that was a refreshing feeling.

Jumping back across the rock stepping stones, he made his way back to the planks of the bog and began working his way in the direction of the settlement. His quest was complete for now, what else could he find here? Thinking on it, Baldur figured he should probably return to the upper floors. He needed to make sure he honed himself on the most difficult challenges they could face so that he never got lax in his combat senses and survival instinct.

The walk back was much the same as going, but with less fighting. At least for now, the mobs that he had slain had yet to respawn, however when it came to the circular path that climbed the trunk of the tree to take him up higher, he moved past it. He was out here already, he might as well explore some and see what he comes across. One never knew where a dungeon might be lurking, and he needed every bit of XP that he could find in order to catch up with the others. Right now, his biggest issue was catching up with the others HP wise. In a war of attrition, he was still too low on his hit points in order to last long, and his mitigation scores were only just strong enough to make it through the AoE effects. Making full use of consumables was a big help, but it wasn't enough for now.

"I need to stop being dead weight that has to be carried, and start contributing more."

His attacks on a single target were decent, considering he wasn't a dagger user, but his ability to hit almost every time was a worthwhile boon. He also came completely prepared, unlike a lot of those higher than him who seemed content to just coast through the boss fights. It upset him that it was possible, and that his hard word was matched by them, but such was the discrepancy in their levels.

Finally, Baldur came across what he was looking for. A small settlement nestled among the roots of several trees where they rose above the the water. The small brown huts had a look about them which said they were old and neglected of repair. It appeared as though water and wear were slowly winning the battle against them, and yet the orange light which spilled out from the windows fought off the darkness found at the bottom of this trees with a stubborn ferocity.

Along the paths here, were crooked poles every dozen feet or so upon which hung lanterns to provide even more light. It gave the village a quaint, homey feeling that was directly opposed by the dark waters and oppressive atmosphere of the bog. Walking along the pathways, Baldur could see the markings that designated where the safe zone started and ended. With a bit of a relaxed sigh, he felt just a hair of stress melt away when he crossed the marking stones.

Eyeing a nearby bench, Baldur went and sat down. He knew he wasn't building up any lactic acid to cause him fatigue, but it felt good to sit down, and the brain needed rest just as much as everything else.

It was dark at the base of these trees, so when Baldur woke up from his name it was an indeterminate time later. It couldn't have been too much later since it wasn't nearly pitch black down here, but it wasn't too much better than that during normal hours either. Still, Baldur figured he should strike on. It could be dangerous getting caught out at night down here, though he wondered what could possibly threaten him more than the Monkey King had. It was probably the most terrifying thing down here, but then Baldur's energy supply was not limitless. A small swarm of mobs would still be enough to over-power Baldur, but could they do it before his <<Teleport Crystal>> would carry him out? On this floor, that was doubtful.

As he passed beyond the stones marking the edge of the safe zone, Baldur could almost imagine passing through an invisible barrier. Was there a lore explanation for those? He liked to believe the NPCs erected them for superstitious reasons, like keeping evil spirits of hostility at bay. As he passed by, he noticed something that looked like one of the pillars from the safezone, but it glowed as a whole, instead of through the rune etched face.

"Hmm..."

Baldur looked over the small statue and then took the material and placed it in his inventory.

Baldur's eyes shot wide. No sooner did he place the material in his inventory than a howl... or a screech straight from a horror movie suddenly reverberate through the air and his nerves. His hand shot to his katana, but he didn't have a mob to target so he jumped back, mere feet from the safe zone. A heartbeat later and mobs began to spawn right where the crystal he had just taken had been. Targetting the first one with his <<charge>> skill, Baldur's sword erupted with azure light as he flew through the air at the now group of them. The brilliant light of the azure sword art cut through the darkness wrapped forms of the <<Bog Assassins>>, driving them away and showering the area with polygons.

"baka baka baka... you should have expect that!"

With each slash, another of the foes was felled, but more seemed to appear around him as he cut them down.

Baldur seemed to narrow down the spawn location of the mobs, but he wasn't sure if there would be an end to them. Continuously he was able to slide from the post motion of his <<Gen Getsu>> immediately into another, so that there was hardly a moment for the mobs to attack before his black and red blade burst into inhuman speed with an azure trail of light following the blade, and where it found purchase on the mob, it ended with the sound of shattered glass and raining polygons. His heart began to feel like it was racing. Was the spawn going to end or was he going to run out of energy first? Baldur wasn't sure, his only solace was that the safe zone was so close. But these mobs had a stun attack, and if he turned his back to flee, he might get chain stunned to death.

"Come on, let there be an end to you suckers."

Finally, when the light on his <<Gen Getsu>> sword art died down, Baldur gave a breath of relief that there were no more mobs to be head.

"Finally." Baldur sighed as he put his katana away.

Taking stock of his location, Baldur glanced around once more. He had gotten pretty good spoils from that fight, and managed to avoid getting hit by anything through superior firepower. How much longer could he hope to skate by on alpha-strike damage? He would have to milk it as long and as much as he could. His time was probably limited. Though now that he was a Rank 5 merchant, he could focus on Col over Mats, since he now had an bottomless supply as long as the supply of Col was bottomless. Should he need more mats, he could always take an <<Earning a Living>> quest as well.

Continuing on his way, Baldur began to ascend slightly once again. This should take him to the giant tree dungeon he had scouted out all those months... ago. He missed his friends desperately. That had been a time he felt truly alive and connected to his peers. He was beginning to feel that way with Cygnus and Rain, but they still had a ways to go. He hoped that he would begin to feel that way with Xion as well, but the knight had more than his heavy armor guarding him from friends and foes alike.

"If only Lessa were here. She always knew how to pull people together."

The wooden bridge rose and fell like a wave as it continued through the bog, arching over and under the massive roots of the trees. Ahead of him, below the level of the bridge he was at and below a root, was another spawn of <<Bog Striders>>.

Crouching down with his hand hovering above the handle of his sword, Baldur activated his <<charge>> skill, paired with his <<gen getsu>> sword art. His blue and orange form surged down the path at inhuman speeds as his black blade ignited with azure light as he drew the blade cleanly and cut through the four mobs. Smiling as they exploded into polygons, Baldur sheathed his sword and continued on his way.

Baldur proceeded further out into the forest, the path slowly raising up from the muck of the bog the deeper her went. If he remembered his path correctly, this would eventually take them to the forest dungeon that they had made it to, but never had the chance to explore. They had been so low level that  by the time they had made it out there they had been exhausted and returned to the settlement. Baldur had always secretly regretted that they hadn't made it back out there to explore, but that was part of what he was doing now. It was just sad that his friends had out leveled him, or disappeared to the point where he couldn't put the team back together.

They had had incredible synergy, better than he had had with any other group. He now found other players he could approach that with, but he had yet to find tank that could fill Tyger's shoes. She had been the perfect mix of being tanky enough to absorb whatever they fought without risk, while still being comparable in damage with everyone else. She couldn't quite hit the numbers of everyone else who was purely damage specced, but she got close enough to be a contributor. Their teaming had been the reason he had gone with katana as a DPS weapon, rather than something more power-gamey like Two handed straight sword or dagger. She had wanted to be the tank, and he couldn't resist the allure of the blade he was so familiar with.

Baldur found himself walking down memory lane as much as he was walking down the wooden path through the wooded floor. Was this some form of catharsis for him? It had been a long time since he had allowed himself to think about... her. He was still not sure what the actual situation surrounding everything was, but he refused to dwell on it as well. It had been his greatest failure, and no one knew if he would ever be able to forgive himself.

No. If he could complete this tower before her name showed up on the Monument of Life, then he could forgive himself. That would make everything right again.

The question, ultimately, was how he would get there. He needed to go faster, and for that, he needed to complete more and more quests. He needed to fly through the levels and catch up with his friends and allies so that he could carry others to the pinnacle as well. If he got them to the frontline, then maybe someone like Calrex could pull them all together and they could press on through this tower with a more united front than Zelrius and Azure had done, claiming the prizes for themselves only in the name of clearing levels. What had his old guild turned into?

Baldur knew, however, because that hubris was in himself as well. It was a risk one always faced at the top, or when surrounded by invincible friends. You got cocky, arrogant, and then the Aincrad would put you in the ground. He had watched it happen so many times. Even his poor friend Azide had fallen into the rhythm as well. That loss... that loss not only stung Baldur, but perhaps all of the player's chances to get out of this castle alize. Azide was brilliant in a way that few others were, and he had an eye for talent and unity that dwarfed any other he had seen in this floating castle. What Baldur possessed was a poor imitation. He was certainly not the one capable of uniting others.

"Dammit, my friend." Baldur cursed as he punched a nearby tree. "Why... why did it have to be you?"

He cursed again under his breath and wiped away a tear as he thought back to the moment the friend he hardly knew disappeared. Baldur only ever had the chance to know the man from a distance, but he had seen the work the man had done, the loyalty he had spread, and he could measure the wake of the man. He had always wanted to form a more formal alliance. He wanted to join the man long before he had even joined the Azure Brigade. Square One had been a great guild, and Baldur had wanted to pursue it rather than Azure, but there was really only one guild to choose when it came to the frontline.
