[F7:SP] Manticore? More like Mantisore after I'm done killing it. <<Arabian Nights: Night 2>> COMPLETE

Recommended Posts

[Liar Route]

After all of the intensive training he's put himself through, Seul felt like he could take on anything. As fate would have it there was a second part of the Arabian Nights quest he completed so long ago. A message from Ali around noon confirmed that. The message simply asked that the knight rendezvous with him at dusk at the Drunken Crane tavern up on the 7th floor alongside coordinates for the building's location. Figuring this was the perfect chance to bash in more bandit skulls, of course the Lodestar ended up going.

...

He arrived at the tavern that evening, only to find Ali at the bar. The man offered him a drink, but Seul simply turned him down, wanting to get straight to business. "Have you heard?" He asked while making sure no one was eavesdropping on their conversation. "They say that those bandits have tamed a legendary being, a three headed chimera of a goat, bear and lion. They captured it from the other side of Nimbus, high up the mountain." he says with a disbelieving tone. "Can you check it out for me? Maybe slay it if you can and bring back some proof? You did a great job with those bandits I doubt you'll have a hard time with a little beast like that." he adds with a laugh that seemed like a bad omen. The coordinates for a general area where a thieves hideout was and where they might be keeping the beast, were then sent over. Again, a quest confirmation window shortly followed, appearing in Ali's immediate vicinity and Seul accepted without hesitation; offering Ali a hasty goodbye before heading off to pursue his new mission.

Stealthy wasn’t exactly how Seul would have described his style. The bandit hideout came into view on the horizon and when most people would have at least tried to sneak in and take out the enemy one by one the knight drew his sword and ran straight for the entrance. There were three guards on duty but they were all slow compared to his speed. His sword began to glow as he got closer and with two consecutive pommel strikes across all their heads he knocked off a large amount of the thief trio’s health while managing to stun the gang at the same time.

“Tell me where you’re holding the manticore!” He commanded. The thieves were all lying on their backs now, unable to move or fight back. If they valued their lives they would end up talking sooner or later considering he already demonstrated how outmatched they truly were.

Only one of the thieves began to speak as the stunning effects of the sword art began to wear off. “If you keep walking down the path over there you’ll reach a large room we’re using as the holding chamber for the chimera… Though I wouldn’t recommend going in there unless you have a death wish kid.” That was all he needed to hear. The thief was probably foolish enough to think that he would spare them if he got what he wanted. They were wrong. In six angular slashes through all of their bodies he was able to brutally kill the bandits, leaving behind only pixels before he started down the path to the manticore.

“So it is real after all.” If the thief’s words were to be trusted that is. For all he knew this could have been a trap and a whole lot more thieves could have been waiting at the end of the hall.

He would need to recover some of his energy before the final battle against the manticore so with that in mind he wasn’t looking to rush in as boldly as he had before. Thankfully things seemed to be quiet around the thieves den. For a place housing an extremely dangerous creature security sure was lax. Maybe they didn’t have very many guards around for that very reason. If the manticore was as deadly as that thief made it out to be in the case of an accident the amount of casualties would probably be high on their end. Not many people would mess with a group that had a guard beast like that anyway.

But Seul wasn’t like other people, that’s why Ali came to him in the first place. The knight would be able to get the job done. Now he just wondered what he would be able to bring back as proof of the thing’s existence considering bodies disappeared upon dying in this world.

[Snowfrost Potion Used - Fire Damage is Halved for One Battle]

Just as a preemptive measure he removed the snowfrost potion he had been saving and doused it over his armor. Perhaps the mob dropped something that could serve as sufficient proof of its existence. Something that would only be unique to it that Ali could recognize. If that was the case, would Seul really be okay with giving it up? What did the NPC man do to deserve it besides sit on his butt? Nothing. Seul was the one out in the field. Risking his life and doing all the dirty work while he just drank back at the cozy bar. The least he could do was keep some loot along the way if there happened to be any.

Besides, what Ali didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him later on. Whether the manticore really existed or not, what difference would it make to him? It wasn’t like that guy would willing go out and look for it to see if he was being lied to or not. He was too cowardly for that.

ID: 71106 | LD: 14 (13 +1) - Lair Found

As Seul neared the end of the corridor he could see a large metal set of doors, with orange light trickling from underneath. This was probably it. There was no where else to go from here anyway. He needed to get ready. Opening up his status menu he looked over his current setup and concluded that it should have been more than capable of dealing with the monster. If fire was involved the damage he would receive from it would be halved till the end of the fight. A quick glance up at the energy bar in the corner of his vision also revealed that it was fully restored now.

It wasn’t going to be an easy battle, but if he kept a clear head he expected it to go over rather smoothly. Just staying focused was the key to victory and he needed to remember that there were enemies way tougher than the chimera that lurked up on higher floors.

With his resolve stronger than ever, Seul pushed the doors open and drew his sword. He was standing up on a raised platform in a circular enclosure with the Manticore in the center of the room. It immediately noticed his presence and let out a mighty roar. The Lodestar swung his sword through the air, obviously not close enough to hit it, but was greeted with a large stream of fire trailing from the monster’s mouth. He ran. The fire managed to catch him though, but surprisingly didn’t deal as much damage as he thought it would have. Despite not hurting him immediately though, he was left with some nasty burns.

“Dammit. What’s with this thing? How the hell am I supposed to get close enough to attack if it’s shooting fire at me from across the room? That’s like cheating!” He yelled while fumbling down the stairs to the ground level to face the beast.

  • Partial Phase: The chimera will always deal a minimum of 24 normal damage per hit, even through Armor and Armor Abilities/Mods. Except for the following Fire Breath attack.
  • Fire Breath: On a natural BD/MD of 8-10, the chimera will breath fire, releasing a AoE attack that will affect all players fighting it for 40 normal damage and Tier 2 Burn Damage per post, for the next 2 individual player post. It is possible to simultaneously release 2 Fire Breath attacks if the BD and MD meet the requirements for it. After he composed himself he could see the burn damage start to take effect. Even though it was minimal, he really wanted to just shake off the negative status effect to focus on the fight at hand. He rolled out from behind the junk pile and lashed out with his sword again in an attempt to scare off the monster, but was met with a gigantic paw that tossed him across the room like a ragdoll, knocking off some more of his health. “This thing has partial phase too?!” Along with the burns he suffered a minor amount of damage from the hit. The manticore was proving to be a formidable enemy. If he wasn’t careful about this fight he would definitely die a horrible death at the hands of the creature.

Getting up to his feet once more he raised his blade defensively. He didn’t want to lose. Not like this.

He ran forward again and swung his blade, but missed by a short distance. The manticore was fast, he would give it that. In the wake of his miss he was consumed by another blast of fire that wrapped around his form, applying the burn status once more. How was he supposed to get around such an attack?

Staggering away as the burn from the previous fire attack chipped away more of his health, the new one showed up in its place. The monster seemed determined to roast him, but he wouldn’t let it. He just needed to keep pushing further at least until he could land a blow on it. At the heart of the matter, the monster wasn’t invincible by any means. Hurting it would just be the tip of the iceberg, but he needed to act sooner rather than later if he didn’t want to wind up in trouble.

Enough was enough. Cutting through the fire, Seul rushed at the boss again. His blade took on a bright glow and found its mark in the monster’s side as he unleashed his sword art. The manticore cried out in pain before turning its head around to face the player, shooting off another blast of fire, to burn him up.

Even though the monster was powerful, it didn’t seem to like changing its attack pattern up too frequently. All he could do was endure the flames as they washed over him, not hurting him directly, but instead restoring the burning effect once again. Part of him was glad he came alone to face the creature. The fires spread wide and indiscriminately. If someone without the same healing properties as him was around things probably wouldn’t have been going as smoothly. He was healing at the same rate as the damage being dealt, but other players might not have been as fortunate.

He wound up to swing again but as he did tripped up due to another blast of fire that engulfed him. That wasn’t all though as another fiery blast consumed his figure right after. Needless to say, the manticore was really bringing the heat this time around. Once the flames faded away he saw the monster on the other side of the arena, waiting for him to make his move. His breathing might have been heavy, but that was mainly due to the smoke that filled the area from the flames. Most of the things lying around the room were on fire now, a piece of his coat included. After gently patting it out he glanced over at his health bar, seeing that it was still well above the yellow zone. In truth the fight probably would have been over if he was a little more accurate with his swings, but he was only one person and bound to be flawed in certain areas of combat. Such was the price of playing solo.

Spinning his blade around like a fan, he cut through the fire once more, lunging in and delivering another Galaxy Destroyer to the monster’s side. It’s health was below the halfway mark now and another couple of galaxy destroyers would probably be enough to finish the fight. All and all it was a relatively easy battle for him, even if he was on his own.

As expected the manticore responded by breathing out more fire in his direction, burning him up with the flames but ultimately dealing only a minor amount of damage. If he could just avoid the fire attack long enough for the burns to disappear he would be set for the remainder of the fight. Of course this was easier said than done though since the fire had such a large range that it was nearly impossible to dodge once unleashed within the confined space of the arena.

Swinging his sword around he missed yet again by a narrow margin. He failed to understand how something the size of the manticore was capable of moving at such high speeds. Or if his technique was just not as good as he originally thought it was. Either way there was no changing the fact the monster was hard to pin down.

Another swipe of its paw sent Seul rolling across the room and knocked off the little of his health that had been restored from the previous barrage. How much longer would he need to fight? They had only just begun, but it already felt like hours had passed since he first entered the room. The manticore was not making this simple, but the pay out at the end was enough to drive him to keep going. With a fight as difficult as this one, there was bound to be something worthwhile to gain once it was dead.

Getting back up to his feet he ran at the manticore again, cutting it open with his Galaxy Destroyer sword art. It was on its last legs now. Another attack like that would do it in for good. Now it was just a matter of actually being able to hit the darn thing.

By now Seul had got the pattern down pact and instinctively raised his sword to fend off the fire breath attack. Of course he wasn’t shielded against the flames, but he knew that cutting through them was possible at least. Surprisingly enough, his health never dipped below the 800 mark for the entirety of the fight. That shouldn’t have been going to his head, but it would have been a lie to say he wasn’t a little proud of that fact either. Who else could say they went toe to toe with the manticore and came out to talk about it? Not that he actually won yet though...

Another swing. Another miss. Then the manticore would just breath fire at him and reset the burn damage over time effect. It was becoming quite routine for each round to end up like this. After the last fire breath blast, he was left in a kneeling position, patting out the various embers that danced across his clothing. All he needed was one more hit and the manticore would be dead. He would have saved people from whatever nefarious plan the thieves were making to use the beast. It was clear now that it wasn’t capable of killing him. The healing properties of his equipment were just too powerful for the fire to make any difference in that regard.

Standing up again, he walked toward the monster, not caring if it was going to shoot more fire at him or not. By the time it attacked his health would be back and with any luck a sword would be through the chimera’s heart before that happened.

  • Double attack: The chimera attacks twice in one turn, once on a successful BD and second on a successful MD. Evasion/Accuracy or any kind of Battle dice related action applies to the Monster dice as well. This acts as two distinct normal hits, each being mitigable.
In this case, Burn Damage does not stack but resets post count, while the normal attack damage combines into 80 normal damage; this value is then mitigatable.

Breaking into a run now, Seul raised his sword at a horizontal angle, aiming for the manticore’s head. Before the creature could unleash another fire breath attack, the Lodestar jumped into the air and landed, driving his glowing sword into its skull upon impact. With both feet firmly planted then, he swung the sword upwards, cleaving its face in two down the center and causing it to lose the last of its health. It exploded, covering the area in pixel dust as some of the flames began to dissipate and he dropped both hands to his knees, grinning from ear to ear.

“Yeah, take that! No problem at all for someone like me.” He said through haggard breaths. The thing put up a good match but was outmatched in the end due to its lack of damage. He couldn’t wait to go and tell the others in the knights the tale of how he slayed such a monster.

After a few moments of respite a HUD appeared before Seul’s eyes, showing him the grand prize for slaying the manticore: The Manticore Mask. A unique item that was exclusively the last hit reward for fighting the boss. Seemed like going alone was the right choice after all. If there was one thing he didn’t wish to do, it was fight over who got the last hit bonus. Such things only served to complicated life further than it needed to be, but as a solo player he had full control over the kinds of treasures he received.

“Taunt and flame aura? Just when I switched from being a tank too.” He said with a sigh and a shrug. Still, it was a pretty good find and one worth keeping as far as he was concerned. Ali didn’t deserve to have something so rare, so he was resolved to just say the manticore was made up as a scare tactic by the thieves.

With the mask securely placed in his inventory, Seul stretched his arms out as he looked around. With all the commotion he was surprised that no thieves ended up joining in the brawl to try and protect their pet. Maybe they did here and just figured they’d only get in the way if they joined in. To be honest, they were probably right. He wondered if any would try to attack him now though. If he could kill the manticore and suffer only minor bruises in the process, then what hope did they really have against him? None.

Just to be safe though, he decided that waiting for his energy to return would be the best option. The fight drained a lot out of him and if there was an instance where he needed to fight back having energy available was crucial to survival. At least he thought so anyway.

[Equipment Change: Regret  Lucky Coin // -24 Holy Blessing & 1 Recovery | +3 LD]

Perhaps looking for a dungeon would be a good idea now that he was done with the quest. All that was left was to return his findings (or rather lack thereof) to Ali and collect the rewards. A detour into a dungeon wouldn’t hurt anybody? His skills as a scout weren’t particularly good, but with his lucky coin he was at least a little better at searching than he would have been normally. Unequipping his coat, Regret, he equipped the Lucky Coin. Maybe he would get lucky and find a place secret passageway filled with more thieves for him to bust up. The thought pleased him thoroughly, but he wasn’t about to get his hopes too high up either. He was a horrible at most things not related to combat after all. Such was how the world functioned though. To excel in one area, one had to lack in another to make up for it.

There were a few people who managed to cover all their bases and expose as few weaknesses as possible. Most of them were frontliners. People who worked day in and day out to reach top form in order to stand against the challenges the game had to offer. He would reach a point one day where he was among the talked about names in the game. When that day was he didn’t know, but it would happen eventually. Or even if it didn’t that was fine in his book too. The idea of going by unnoticed was appealing sometimes. Notoriety came with a cost. Sometimes the price was your life, like in the cases of the Hero and Berserker’s deaths. A horrible way to go for sure and all because they were somewhat famous among the players of Aincrad. He wasn’t going to die like that as long as he could help it.
