[R5 Appraiser - Closed For Renovations] - Everyday Miracles - SELLING UNIQUES

Recommended Posts

Although he was beginning to tire of the sight of chest plates, Shield still had a lot of stock to go through before he could make his weekly quotas on low-level equipment. He pulled his scales and coin across the desk and affixed his jeweler's loupe before picking up the next chest plate.

The going was slow, and one plate in particular refused to be identified until he had wasted half of the day's attempts on that item alone. Then, after all of that effort, it had just been another paralysis enhancement. He sighed, pushing the stack of items away from him. Despite the difficulty, everything he had inspected had enhancements.

"It's slow going, but that will be good for the lower levels of Aincrad," he said, leaning back in his chair. "I guess that's one way I'm helping. Making things more affordable for players who don't have much else to work with."

With his lucking having plateaued momentarily on chest plates, Shield decided to swap over to his namesake, hoping the change in tack would equal a change in luck.

"Regeneration," he mumbled to himself, setting the shield aside to take the next one. "Thorns..." he went on, pulling the next shield forward.

Before it had fully registered, a golden exclamation mark filled his view as he inspected the item through his jeweler's loupe. He leaned forward, inspecting the item to see what enhancement the ellipses would become.

"Holy Blessing again?" he gasped. "Oh, if only I had a way to raise this thing's tier. Between this and that last suit of armor, I could make myself one hell of a heal tank build."

The remainder of the day paled in comparison. Nothing of interest appeared, which was to be expected. After all, he had never rolled more than one unique enhancement in a day, and he didn't expect to any time soon.

His success the day before set his hopes high, which was an unfortunate thing. He had a stack of shields laid out and ready to appraise, but right our of the gate, his first item locked on him. It took him another four tries to find anything noteworthy on one of the others, and the only other things he managed to find aside from that one shield of paralysis were a couple of thorned shields.

Pushing his tools across the desk, Shield pressed his palms against his eyes.

"There has to be a better way to find good gear," he groaned. It wasn't that he minded searching for new things, but there was a nagging realization in the back of his mind that even if he found something noteworthy, he wouldn't be able to make anything off of it. "Selling that one spear seemed to have been nothing but a fluke..."

His frustrations were beginning to carry over from the other days, because the next set of appraisals was paltry. Only two successful appraisals in the lot, and with a small mound of materials now gone.

"With so little to show for it, too," he sighed, lacing his fingers behind his head and looking up towards the ceiling. About this time, he heard a knock on his door.

"You got anything for me?" asked the weapons broker that was the ferry to the first floor for lower players.

"Oh," Shield said, disappointment heavy in his voice. "I may have to owe you. The shipment is going to be light today."

The broker raised an eyebrow as they made their exchange.

"You weren't kiddin'," said the broker. "It's alright, buddy. Just don't overwork yourself."

Shield nodded to acknowledge the sentiment and waved  goodbye as the man departed once again for the first floor.

Shield had long since given up on defensive items. To his knowledge, there were no defensive enhancement on tier one equipment that could outdo his tier two gear. However, there were some that he had heard of that might outdo his axe, and easily so. Unfortunately, today would not the day to find them, but if nothing else, there were a handful of mundane enhancements to uncover today.

During a week where his quotas had been down, a small pile of axes wouldn't be unwelcome. One locked, which was unfortunate, but between the keen, the accuracy, two damages and a paralysis, he was back on track towards fulfilling his personal quotas.

"Gotta keep up the pace of days like today," he sighed, stretching as he let his eyes adjust back to the dim light of his shop. "I also need to find a good source of second tier equipment before long..."

While there had been a sudden influx of players in his shop not too long ago, things had slowed down to a crawl. Aside from Beat stopping in for visits now and then or his various business connections picking up or dropping off orders, there was nobody who came up this far. Shield didn't mind. If anything, it gave him some time to concentrate on his craft.

He focused his eye through the jeweler's loupe and began appraising axes once again. Today was nothing but paralysis and damage, that is until he found an odd looking axe at the bottom of the crate. It was shaped like a human spine for the handle and part of a hip bone for the axe's head.

"This axe has a bad case of Main Character Syndrome."

Affixing the loupe once again, he was greeted by the now familiar golden exclamation mark that denoted a unique enhancement.

"Paralytic Venom once again," he whooped. "This will go nicely with my Crippling Depression in the display case."

Sky had been wanting to get the sword made by Eatos upgraded. From what he had heard, the easiest way to do that, was go to a merchant. He smiled, entering the fourth floor Mechants shop, the owner, Shield. His clan mates had suggested this particular merchant, and although the walk had been tough, and he would have much rathered not having done it, he was glad he was finally here. He walked in, going to the counter and pulled Guiding Light off his back.

"Hey could i get an Appraisal done?" He asks, putting two MATS on the table, as well as his sword, Guiding Light. He felt weird putting it down, he hadn't taken it off since his friend had made it for him. But this was going to make the blade stronger... At least he hoped it was.

Shield nodded, looking the item over. He wasn't aware that there were players out recommending him, but it was certainly refreshing to hear. The economy and business in general had seemed slow in SAO. Maybe this was a sign.

"Looks like a rare quality. Going for a perfect then?" he said, taking out his jeweler's loup, antique scales, and merchant's coin and laying them on the desk in front of him. "Just a reminder that what I find is up to chance."

With that, he affixed the loupe to his eye and peered through its ruby hued lens at the sword. He squinted at the item, watching the little blinking ellipses in the bottom corner of his display. Suddenly, a large exclamation mark appeared and a new set of stats printed themselves across the looking glass' display.

"Huh... Recovery. One slot. If you're short on energy in a combat, this might be your best friend," he said, handing the weapon back across the table along with the extra material he had not needed for the check.. "It's hardly groundbreaking, but it'll do you in a pinch. Is there anything else I can help you with?"

Sky watched as he Appraised the sword, and when he said the added enchantment, he groaned a little. In all honesty, he had been hoping for a accuracy or damage buff, but at least this was better than nothing, and he knew it wasn't the merchants fault, like he said, it was up to luck. He smiled at him, thankful for the service. He grabbed the Mat back, and grabbed his now perfect quality sword, putting it in his sheath on his back.

"Thanks for the Upgrade, it probably will save my ass one day" He replies, smiling as he thanks Shield before walking out, taking his upgraded sword with him.

There were uneventful days, and then there were days like this one. After seeing his first legitimate customer in weeks, the activity of the shop was more or less as dull as could be. Part of Shield very much wanted to call it a day early and take a long nap, but he knew that rest was a luxury that he didn't have as long as SAO was unbeaten.

His resolve solidified, at least for the moment, he turned his focus back towards his craft. With his scales and coins and a handful of axes laid out beside him, Shield set about the task of appraisals.  Not only did his first item lock, so did his second. At least for some time, this was his worst luck he had with appraisals. Two completely locked up items compared two with actual enhancements.

"I must be slipping... My numbers should be a lot better than this..."

Another day of putting the axe to the grind, only the idiom had a slightly more literal meaning in this case. Although he was not literally grinding the axes, he was holding them up to scrutiny, seeing what was worth selling and what needed to be more or less discarded.

Although his first few attempts were slow to start, he soon found a rhythm, setting each axe aside as he found what was in store.

"Bleed... damage... paralysis... another bleed.... another paralysis... yet another bleed..." he muttered silently to himself, setting each in its place as he appraised them.

With a deep breath, he sat upright, allowing his eyes to adjust to the normal coloration of the room, the red filter of his loupe no longer tinting the world in front of him, not to mention that the view was no longer cramped to immediately in front of his face.

The prior day's appraisals had been a relief from a break of very inconsistent and unproductive days. Today, he found himself right back in the thick of it. Within ten minutes, his head was already beginning to hurt from tensing his facial muscles for so long, clenching the jeweler's loupe with the meat of his cheek. Though none of his items fell entirely flat, none of them revealed anything unique, and none of them revealed anything easily.

Each item burned three materials, the final one not even yielding an enhancement by the time he had used up all of his best efforts. Frustrated from the lack of progress, he set aside the axes he had identified, one with accuracy and one with added damage, and decided he was best of calling it a loss for the day.

"Hopefully I'll have an easier time of it tomorrow," he mused to himself, hoping to high heaven that he had not jinxed himself in saying as much.

If a day appraising could be described as hot and cold, this would be that day. While he typically went through a small pile of items, nearly every check required he retrieve something new. For the most part, that meant succeeding in searching for new enhancements. However, nearly as many fell entirely flat, displaying the telltale red padlock that meant the item not only had not revealed an enhancement, but that it never would.

"Almost seems a little sad," he thought aloud. It was silly, but some days, he almost felt as if his appraisals were his children. It just so happened that today's children were either stars, or they wouldn't amount to anything. "Some kids," he chuckled to himself, scooping the entirely mundane axes aside to be disposed of later.

Today's appraisals had been largely damage focused, with one straying slightly into the realm of sustained damage rather than straight damage increase.

"Not a terrible day. Things can be sold at least."

If there were two things that Shield had found in abundance that could be considered rare, it would be items with the Paralytic Venom enhancement and any number of holy artifacts. Today's selection of axes contained a rather odd number with angelic imagery marked around the edges. Sure enough, as soon as he set it under his lens, the golden exclamation mark interrupted a sea of red.

"Another holy weapon," he said to himself, whistling aloud. "This really does fall in line with my other finds. Perhaps there is a title that could come from it." He stratched his chin, letting his eyes rest a moment as he thought. "Well, there's a theme of holiness and poison. Perhaps 'The Paladin of Poison.' Or maybe rather than that, 'Toxic Religion,' or maybe even 'Heaven's Poison Master.'"

The titles were heavy-handed, and in some cases a little on the nose, but it was fun to think about.

Today, Shield was on a mission. he and Beat and Sey had recently just returned from a scouting mission, having glimpsed the boss room. The walls and floor had been covered wall to wall with a substance that seemed like it could be burnable, and that was exactly what he hoped to find: Burn. He dug through a fresh shipment of axes, setting aside anything that looked particularly menacing or flame related. There was one that he picked out more for amusement than anything: one designed like part of a CD.

Each axe was a disappointment, some of them having damage over time effects, but not those he had hoped for. finally, he was left with only the odd looking axe, putting it to the business end of his loupe. Immediately, the familiar exclamation mark indicated that he had found something noteworthy. Looking closer, he gasped.

"Burn! Perfect! If this can't handle the silk of the boss, nothing can!"

Yesterday's success still fresh on his mind, he went into today's appraisals with high hopes. They were not unfounded either. As soon as he began his attempts for the day, he nearly fell out of his chair. He had heard tales of the coveted "Fallen" enhancement, but he had never expected to find one himself, especially so soon in his career. Consistent, stackable damage on regular hits, turning normal hits into critical hits on their own, was something to be remarked upon.

Remark he did, with a few colorful words of surprise. He continued with his checks, but he was so excited by his discovery that he barely paid them any mind. He had found plenty of holy enhancements, but this was his first time finding something specifically unholy. It was certainly a welcome change of pace.

"If only it had been on a higher tiered item. Come to think of it... why is it so hard to come by higher quality items anyways? ...Questions for later."

The little hunched man that was his arms dealer lumbered into the shop. He was stocky and balding, but he was kindhearted. It took someone with a strong sense of right to do what he did, selling goods to lower level players for practically no profit.

"The shipment ready to take down to the first floor, Shield man?" puffed the rotund man. "We got lots of people waiting."

"Sure thing, Henry," replied the taller, more chiseled player. He approached the other player, opening a transfer window where he passed a few simple enhancement items in return for a modest amount of Col. "Someday, we're gonna be rich."

"Someday," laughed the stocky little man who waved and disappeared out the door.

Shield's appraisals were run of the mill that day, but it would give him more fodder to pass along to Henry another day.

"We're doing good works," he sighed. "Wish that was a little more profitable..."

Shield blinked as he looked through his jeweler's loupe. This was the fourth time in five days that he was presented with the golden exclamation mark notification that indicated a unique enhancement. It was also the third time that the had seen the Paralytic Venom enhancement.

"It's strange that this one comes up so often," Shield thought aloud to himself. "Then again, it's a good enhancement for lower level players. If they decide to upgrade it by adding enhancements, it's more or less as if they had a demonic of low tier. It leaves them two open slots, while at the same time still doing as much as two slots of paralysis."

He set aside the weapon and organized the rest of his day's appraisals. He had found a good number of enhancements today, including the unique, which always was something to be excited about. That was just one more low level player who would be the king of his party for a day. Still, there was one thing in particular he would love to find.

"My kingdom for a Phase weapon!"

Atzo entered Shield and Beats shop, it was nice to see them again and he knew he had an odd order for Shield. Atzo was determined to get some better dueling weaponry, though he didn’t have the necessary materials to get the weapons appraised yet. Still he felt that he should get the weapons now so once he had the materials he would need he could get them appraised right away. Approaching Shield Atzo said “I need four unnamed two-handed straight swords that I will name myself, I have a few names in mind for them and need to get some dueling swords. I will probably pay you more than I need to, just because I want to even out my col. For some reason i have 9 extra col. It bugs me so it can be your problem now” Atzo said with a smile and a small laugh. He knew Shield wouldn’t care he didn’t seem to be bothered by anything when Atzo thought about it.

Shield waved to greet Atzo, motioning for him to step over to the rack of mundane zweihanders. None of them had names or special stats, so hopefully they would be of use.

"Take a look and grab whichever ones suit your tastes," he said, retaking his seat by his appraisal desk. "Shout if you need anything. I trust you to take what you need."

He turned his focus back to his work, going through a small pile of hand wraps. This time around, he had some issue making identifications. He found one damaging pair and another with a slot of keen, but nothing else was cooperated. As he set aside his work, he called out to Atzo, taking the jeweler's loupe away from his eye to let it rest.

"You have specific plans for those swords?" he had mentioned dueling, but PvP was rare these days among players. Shield had only ever watched one match, and that had been a number of months ago.
