Located in the piedmont of the mountains on the eleventh floor, a collection of slope-roofed buildings rests on a lush, overgrown plateau. Set among his partner, Shield's merchant shop, Beat's Eats features a rustic resetting and serves all manner of delicious concoctions. Upon entering, customers will hear a pleasant jingle from bells that are attached to the door, letting Beat know when he has business. He is usually always working hard in the open kitchen that allows everyone to watch him work as they sit at the bar, but he is always listening for new orders despite his back being turned to them. On the off chance his is not busy, he will always take the time to chat with his customers.

Beat walked into the front door of his new shop, having just selected the location based on the foot traffic. He wanted a place that wasn't too crowded, but was close enough to the hustle and bustle of town that it would get enough business to make a decent profit. He turned and locked the door, not wanting to serve customers until his skill was at least somewhat decent, and made his way through the shop, inspecting it with a wide grin.

This is where I will make delicious food for everyone! This is so exciting!

He quickly made his way over to the oven and laid the materials out on the preparation table. He scratched his head and tossed all three into the oven. IN an instant, smoke bellowed out of the appliance.

"Ahh crap!"

He opened the oven and retrieved the one salvageable material from the now empty oven. The smoke quickly dissipated and he was left with a day of failure as his beginning into cooking.

"This is going to be a long week...."

Beat returned to his shop for another attempt. He had given his error a good deal of thought and had watched another chef work while he was away from his shop. Cooking was more of an approximation of actual cooking. The most striking difference was the amount of time it took to finish a dish. Upon correctly assembling the ingredients together, one could make a salad in about ten seconds. This feature suited Beat just fine as his cooking knowledge was extremely limited and he would find it arduous to learn how to cook and then have to take a realistic amount of time to cook it.

Thank god for crafting systems

Beat combined a stick of butter to three bowls of flour and put them in the oven. As before smoke rose from the oven, though not nearly as much as before. The failed attempts quickly de-spawned along with the smoke that came from them, but a small loaf of bread sat inside the oven, a reminder that he had learned from his time away. He retrieved the loaf and set it on the counter.

It won't provide any numerical benefits, but it smells and likely tastes great!

Beat returned to his kitchen once again, this time, determined to make something worth more than a filling meal. This time, he would make something he could actually use. He opened up his menu and pulled up a cook book of recommended recipes that he had purchased from an information broker. IT had been affordable and he figured it would be essential to know the official recipes. He walked behind the long counter that ran the length of his cafe and pulled out his ingredients. He flipped through the pages until he found something that caught his eye. He retrieved apples and yeast and combined them with a bottle. The confection blurred for a moment as it ran his cooking skill check. A few moments later, a bottle of Hard Apple Cider appeared.

"YES!"

Beat threw his hands in the air in celebration as he read the item tag. It was something that would prove handy in upcoming battles, but it wasn't a game changer exactly. He thought for a moment and flipped through the pages again as he found another recipe. He retrieved cookie dough, some electrolyte spice and a cookie sheet. HE combined the electrolytes and the cookie dough together then put the solution on the sheet twice. A few moments in the oven produced an even bigger success, though one of the attempts had failed. Beat danced around his kitchen in excitement, unaware of the stares from outside he was attracting.

Beat's enthusiasm from the previous day had carried over to a new day. He had been studying recipes all night in order to decide what he would make the next day. The walked up to the preparation table in his kitchen with a bounce in his step. He pulled out chocolate, sugar and mixed nuts and put the combination of items into a bowl which quickly formed into a single bar resembling the power bars one would see in a health food store.

"Well, it isn't the flavor I would prefer, but it looks tasty enough and this will help me with my energy problem next time I fight."

Adding the item to his inventory, it made a dozen ordinary chocolate chip cookies and managed to burn a second batch. He was not discouraged as he was now at a point where he was seeing regular success. It was encouraging to see that his cooking rank had increased with his recent culinary adventure.

Beat stood in front of his range, flipping through his cook book as he bookmarked a few of the recipes that sounded good. After a few minutes of perusing through the book, he got to work. Pulling out an assortment of bowls and implements. He quickly made combinations of ingredients as he decided to try as much as he could that day to see what his success ratio really was. After his fourth confection, Beat took a swig of a potion and he smiled as the crafting option went from grayed out to highlighted once again, indicating that there was still more work to be done.

"MORE!"

Beat repeated his process, trying four new recipes in the process. Unfortunately, he had only really succeeded about three times, but he had managed to salvage some of the waste from the failure and he wasn't going to complain too much about the items that had succeeded.

"We're getting there!"

Beat slaved away in his kitchen, having memorized his recipe book, trying new variations of the more successful recipes while creating entirely new ones as he went. He wiped his brow as the heat from the grill and oven punished him for his efforts. Hard work wasn't something Beat shied away from, so, despite the time investment and resources required to become truly skilled at a profession, he was determined to make a name for himself. The prospect of supplying the frontline players with the food buffs they needed excited him, even though his actual goal was to be one the frontliners himself.

That's a long ways away though....

His labor only yielded a couple of positive results: A meatloaf that filled the cafe with a heavenly aroma and then a salad that he knew would be handy for the next day's endeavors. He set the meatloaf out under and glass covered stand and added the salad to his inventory.

"Another day, another culinary adventure!"

Beat finished his self-pep talk, tying his apron around his waist as he walked up to the grill. He bit his lips as he began to pull out an assortment of ingredients, hoping inspiration would strike. Sure enough, with enough time, he had made up his mind. Throwing a few ingredients into a pot, Beat made a scrumptious vegetable soup with a hearty broth and packed with seasoned vegetables. Beat took a big whiff, proud of his accomplishment despite the lack of statistical bonus the item would offer.

"Still, that's going to be a great meal! Now then....time for cake!"

Beat quickly assembled eggs, milk, flour and sugar into a couple of cake pans, adding rum to one and chocolate. To his delight, they both turned out perfectly. He quickly added them his inventory as he folded his arms in triumph.

"Not a bad day..."

Eating while I cook:

Beat slaved away in his kitchen as he had so many days before, working to perfect his craft. He set his materials out on his table and scratched his head, considering what to make with his hard earned bounty. He smiled as his mind went to Shield and his habit of enjoying the occasional drink.

"Today's theme? Booze!"

Being mostly oblivious to the world of alcohol, Beat set out shots of each form of booze he could find. He grabbed the first one and gave it a sniff, wincing at the potency of the toxic liquid. He swallowed hard as he held to glass against the light.

"Welp....down the hatch!"

As quickly as he could, he tossed the liquid into his mouth, swallowing as fast as possible, the sting of the alcohol practically choking him. The fluid burned the whole way down as he coughed uncontrollably. Recovering from his coughing fit, he stared at the other glasses he had yet to try.

"Why! Do. People. Drink this stuff!?"

Beat looked to the booze that he had begun to experiment with in order to increase the battle effectiveness of their party, shaking his head as he began to feel past hangovers at the thought of drinking again.

"No no, not today...god no."

He set his ingredients out and went to work with a smile on his face. He had begun to enjoy his profession as he became more and more successful at it. It wasn't that the learning process wasn't enjoyable, but Beat would be lying if he said that he wasn't used to succeeding with his talent rather than hard work. Another Power Bar and a new recipe: a delicious crumble cake, came from his efforts. His stomach grumbles as he snacked on one of the lesser successes, happy to have items he didn't have to stop himself from eating. He quickly finished his work and began cleaning up the mess that cooking inevitably made.

It was with no small amount of trepidation that Shield stepped into the eatery. He had been subjected to some of Beat's rougher attempts at cooking early on, but the young man had set his nose to the grind and made a lot of strides, almost catching up to him in experience since his start as a cook. He knew on an intellectual level that the food would probably be wonderful, but there was something in the reptilian part of his 'fight or flight' brain that was telling him to choose the former option of flight. He did his best to shut that voice up and called to the back.

"Hey, Beat! You got some time to do a little cooking?"

He fished seven materials out of his inventory and set them on the counter along with a grocery list of food items.

"I'll definitely need the first one first, so if I need to come back for the other ones, that's fine. You know how to track me down."

Beat ran into his shop and flipped his menu open, quickly swapping his equipment to maximize his crafting efficiency. He was excited to be filling his first order, glad that it had come from his old rival and traveling companion. He pulled out the order form Shield had given him and looked at the remaining two items he had yet to complete, smiling as he pulled out a large amount of cheese and macaroni noodles. He also brought out a series of alcoholic items to make more than just the things on his list.

"Time to make some blue box!"

He went right to work, heating the oven and combining the cheese with noodles after having cooked them in an instant thanks to the modified cooking system of Sword Art Online. More than pleased with his overwhelming success, he tasted a little of the booze he had made in addition to his friend's requested items.

"Gotta admit, I get why people drink now...it's not bad."

"Mac and cheese was easy, but what about making actual cheese?"

Exploring new avenues of cooking was what had kept Beat interested for so long. He had not originally had any interest in the culinary arts in real life, but the experience he had gotten since his time in Sword Art Online had created a genuine curiosity for the art. He smiled as he laid his materials out and retrieved the equipment necessary to culture cheese. He doubted the game would force him to wait for the cheese to take the lengthy amount of time it would actually take to make cheese, but he would try to glean what he could from the abbreviated process.

"Let's get to work!"

Beat quickly added the cheese and bacteria into silver tubs and watched as the ingredients pixelated for a few moments before forming into two triangle shaped blocks of cheese. He took a big whiff and exhaled in satisfaction as he resisted the temptation to eat them right there.

Another day in the kitchen meant another day of new recipes and experiments. Beat knew there was a little more involved with chemistry, but cooking was certainly not entirely unlike chemistry. Both involved combining the right ingredients to make the desired flavors and textures. Recently, Beat had begun to experiment with ingredients that tasted but, but also had different effects on how you felt after eating it.

The meal needs to be good long after it is eaten...

He went to work, trying a few things that didn't work and trying a few that he knew would work just to avoid wasting a day of crafting. It was a little meta of him to think that way, but resources were precious and he needed to keep his stock up. A cheese recipe he had made a part of his staple inventory was a welcome success, as well as something that would ensure future successes. Everything would soon come together to make crafting more productive and successful.

Using the following crafting consumables:

Today was the first day Beat would be creating culinary confections since reaching level twenty-five, which meant his crafting potential had increased significantly. For Instance, the effect of alcohol items increased by a factor of two without further increasing the penalty to coordination and evasion. The other items of interest were the mitigation enhancements. With a perfectly crafted mitigation food item, he could tank reasonably well while adventuring by himself.

“So much potential! Let’s see what we can do.”

Beat quickly got to work, feeling like a chemist as he often did while he experimented with recipes. He managed to invent a new drink that, while potent, would not affect his cognitive processes as much as some of the other drinks he had made in the past.

The numerical bonuses and penalties won’t change, but at least I’ll be able to keep my head in the fight a little better.

Beat stood in front of the fireplace of their home, enjoying the steady warmth it provided and the environment it created in the room, giving him a good chance to think before he went through a few doors that eventually opened into the back of his kitchen. He got everything he would need out made a space for the large cauldron that they had gotten from the wicked witch. The black cauldron sitting in the corner didn't really fit in with the rest of the kitchen, but it did provide an excellent bonus to his cooking, so he wasn't about to complain.

Alright, let's see what we can do with these bonuses.

With surprising ease, the recipes and ideas simply flowed from Beat's brain, leaving his hands and body free to do what they had already learned how to do. At the end of the furious session, he had five items that he could easily be proud of. He smiled as he opened his menu and looked at the cooking bonus he was receiving.

There came a tinkle at the door followed by a pair of heavy boots to announce the familiar presence of Shield. Since he lived right next door to the shop, in uncomfortably close quarters with the owner, it was fairly common for the stern-jawed player to stop in for a visit while business was slow. If nothing else, chowing down on vanity food items was a good way to pass the time.

"Hey, Beat!" he called out over the sizzle of the wok that was more or less constant background noise by this point. "I got your message. Looks like we have some items to trade!"

He pulled out the two ice creams that Sey had given them upon joining the Celestial Ascendants and transferred them to Beat, meanwhile selecting his pickup items from the shop inventory.

"So between the ice creams and what we already worked out," he thought aloud, counting on his fingers. "You still owe me two more tier one items. Don't you forget, alright?"

With a backlog of orders from Shield, Beat found himself needing to make the day extra productive. Luckily, he always made sure he had the consumables to do just that for those days where he couldn’t seem to catch a break. He set his consumables on the counter and ingested the first two, leaving the crafter’s respite for when he had expended all of his attempts for the day.

Alright, let’s make the most of these.

Beat went right to work, trying new recipes with some success and others with repeated perfection. The customers in his shop watched in awe as he moved along the counter, his hands working with each ingredient expertly and with great speed. As he neared his limit, he quickly chugged the respite, never missing a beat as he continued to work furiously.

“Whew…not bad…” He said after he had finished, admiring the success of his work. He certainly couldn’t deny the fact that the bonuses he had acquired were helping greatly.

Shield inspected the items he had requested, nodding as he checked that each met the specifications he had requested before storing them individually in his inventory.

"Not bad, Beat," he said, giving the aspiring chef a light punch on the shoulder. "Keep it up and we're each going to be the head of our professions in no time."

He opened his menu and made a few notes in his ledgers, mainly reminders for himself regarding what was owed and by whom. At the current moment, he had actually managed to catch up, but as soon as they went out adventuring again, that was sure to change.

"Let me know how things go in the shop," he said, turning to leave before pausing at the door. "Oh, and give me a heads up the next time you've got some time to work on crafting a few things for me. Consumables are always important."

With a wave, he stepped out the door and made his way back over to his own shop.

"Work work work work work work work." Beat sang to himself as he happily sprinted around the busy kitchen, retrieving ingredients and trying new combinations. HIs cafe didn't see too much business on the eleventh floor, but he was just as content to stock up on good consumables to help he and Shield push the front lines.

"Workiiing, I'm Workiinnng. OOOoh Yeah! I'm cookin' up a storm! Yeah!" He continued, getting into the rhythm of whatever song he had managed to come up with in his head. He managed to put together another pig heart that, though it sounded disgusting, had been very palatable when he had gone on a cooking rampage before.

"That'll be handy!" He cheered.

The rest of his confection consisted of a pair of incredibly dense, delicious marble cakes and a nice pot of green tea. All in all, Beat wouldn't complain about a decent day's work.
