This quest takes place on Floor 5
This quest is not repeatable after completion.

Quest Background:
At dusk, on the fifth floor in a random Tavern located in Armadillo you come across a NPC man named Ali, who drinks his sorrow at a bar. If you engage him in conversation he will start telling an unreal/fantastic story about how he found a secret cave full of gold and wondrous items. If you inquire why he is here drinking alone and sad, instead of partying in some extravagant way, he will tell you that the cave belongs to thieves and that they already captured his brother when the two tried to enter the cave.”It all began with a couple of words” he says on a slip of a tongue quickly getting nervous as he realised what he revealed until now. Then he will ask if you can go and save his brother Cassin that to his knowledge, was captured by the thieves and as a reward he says he will give you a nice sum of money if you bring him back. The coordinates for an ordinary thieves hideout are sent to you. A quest confirmation window shortly follows, appearing in his immediate vicinity, will you accept it?

Route options:

  1. (Hero route) - Save Ali’s brother and safely escort him back to the tavern.
  2. (Killer route) - Kill Ali’s brother for his golden ring that he hid from the bandits, but equips after being freed and become an Orange Player, as Cassin puts all his trust in his rescuers.
  • The thread creator chooses the route in his initial post, the rest of the participants agree with his decission by replying to the thread.
  • Regardless of the chosen route, players still need to kill/bypass all thieves.
  • At the end of the thread before locking, a staff member will roll and post the roll ID. This roll will be used in the later parts of this quest series.

Requirements:

  1. Thread must have at least 1 completed page of roleplaying. (21+ posts).

  2. Must roleplay talking to Ali at the Tavern before you accept the quest from him and after you return to the tavern to claim the rewards, in min. 3 posts. (in total, overall)

  3. Fight against the primary group(s) of thieves, rescue or kill Ali’s brother Cassim (depending on route options), then defeat the secondary group(s) of thieves when you return. (more information below)

  4. Any number of players can be take part in this quest. A party constitutes of 4 players max. If there is more than one party, the bandit number multiplies accordingly:
Total number of bandits = 6*(number of parties)
4(per group)*(number of parties) before freeing Cassim + 2(per group)*(number of parties) on the way back to Ali
Note#1: The secondary party can have between 1 and 4 members, a secondary team can be formed only when there are more than 4 players participating on this quest.

  5. In posts which contain multiple rolls for player and mobs, the roll order is as the following: Player roll -> Thief(s) roll.
Note#2: When more than one player team is present, attack turns are as the following: Player team 1 -> Bandit group 1 -> Player team 2 -> Bandit group 2 / etc.

Quest Mob Information:

             jjAS6MPm.jpg

<<Thief>> - A masked NPC in shady clothing of sand-like color wielding a dagger. Receives its(their) own dice roll!
When rolling for a thief or a group of thieves, make sure to use your own username. If you decide to do one roll for a group, the dice apply to every member of the group.
Example: on a successful hit for 'Tri Pierce' each bandit will use that specific sword art on the player with most hate in the party. In case that 2 or more players have the same highest amount of hate, the thieves will split equally in and attack those players.

Note#3: You CANNOT modify the preset stats for the thieves.
If this quest is taken as a Solo Party, the player can fight the bandits one after another using stealth mechanics. In a PP/OP the thieves spawn in groups.

Note#4: In a PP/OP, a player may attempt to skip fighting the thieves if they have invested at least 1 rank in the 'Sneak and Hide' skill; by applying the stealth mechanics. A player will still need to roll X number of times, one for each mob he/she tries to bypass. A player may try to act as bait for the group, if the thief's LD is higher than the player's 'Stealth Rating', the thief will attack the player (using that same roll dices) without alerting the other thief(s), making it possible to kill the mobs one by one. If a player bypasses any number of the required thieves, he/she can still go back and help the rest of the team; or try to bypass all, then leave the thread and finish the quest. Cassim must still be alive if this mechanic is used in the (Hero route).

Note#4A: If a player gets attacked by a thief while the rest of the team(s) fight, the player needs to fight the thieve alone until the rest finish their own fights. If a player has succeeded in getting past all the thieves, he/she will receive the rewards upon completing the quest, even if the rest of the team fails/dies. In this situation if the player is the only one to live he is allowed to double post until completing the quest.

Available Sword Arts / Conditions (Thief dice):

  • Infinite - 5x1*(Basic Damage) / [On a successful hit, CD roll 5-8]
  • Tri Pierce - 3x1*(Basic Damage) / [On a successful hit, CD roll 9-10]
  • Armor Pierce - 1x1*(Basic Damage) & Stun / [On a successful hit, CD roll 11-12, MD roll 1-5]

  2. (Killer route) - 15,000 Col & 2 SP Cassin's Golden Ring [Tier 1, Unique Trinket]: '+2 Loot Die, +1 Sneak and Hide Skill Rank.'
  • Cassin's Golden Ring is given only to those that kill him and earn the orange cursor, he has no actual stats so if a group of player should attack and kill him via RP, the whole party would turn orange and be rewarded with the ring. Those who leave the party and don't attack Cassin received neither the ring or gain the orange PK cursor, even if they take part on the Killer route. The item cannot be traded as it's a unique quest reward.
  • The completion of this quest will be a prerequisite for continuing the series.

Quest Ending Description/Dialogue:

  1. (Hero route) - "Brother!!!" will be the first thing Ali shouts at the sight of his kindred, right before rushing to hug the one he thought off as probably dead. After the emotional reunion scene ends, Ali comes to you and places a large pouch filled with Col coins next to you "I can't thank you enough for this. I won't forget what you did for me, please accept this as a small token of my gratitude." he adds with a joyful expression. With one more "Thank you!" he goes to his brother and celebrate his return with opulence. If in any moment you ask him where he has all that money, he will become hesitant and try to avoid the subject, ultimately leaving the tavern/inn with his brother. In the same time, the Quest Ending Window pops in front of you, displaying your hard earned rewards. The col reward could act as potential proof that the 'cave of wonders' he talked about in his drunken state, when you first meet, could be real.

  2. (Killer route) - "I..... I see..." comes a faded response from Ali as his facial expression changes to one of grievance at the sight of only you (and your group) entering the tavern. He gulps the remaining of his drink then orders another one as he listens to what you have to say. At the end he says nothing and after taking a quick glance at you, he leaves. In the same time, the Quest Ending Window pops in front of you, displaying your hard earned rewards. The col reward could act as potential proof that the 'cave of wonders' he talked about in his drunken state, when you first meet, could be real.

Recommended Level: 15-20
Parties or Groups of players are recommended and encouraged.

Credits: Quest concept borrowed from the ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folktales. This quest is based on the "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" tale. It does not follow the story to the letter but has common elements.

It was with a heavy sigh that Shield settled down at the bar of Armadillo's inn. He brushed sand off of his shoulders, but he knew that the sand that had made it down inside of the armor was going to be the bigger concern.

"Why have I been spending so much time on the fifth floor?" he grumbled to himself.

He placed an order for a vanity item to drink to refresh himself as a stranger settled into the seat beside him at the bar.

"I have been asking myself the same question all day," sighed the weary voice beside him.

Shield turned his shaggy-topped head to see an equally bedraggled looking man, most of his face hidden beneath wraps, but with eyes even darker than his own. Leaning on his elbow, Shield turned to address the man.

"Troubles while traveling?" inquired the tank before taking a sip of the cool liquid that was passed to him by the bartender.

"More than I can count, my friend," replied the stranger.

The man proceeded to unwrap the covering that masked his face. He bore the dark skin of one native to desert climates, and sported an impressive beard that was thick and curly. His eyes looked even more weary in conjunction with his deep frown that he wore.

"Yesterday had begun so wonderfully," continued the stranger. "Caves can be found throughout the desert by one with luck and a keen eye, and my brother and I thought luck to be on our side when we found that cave, decked floor to ceiling in glittering gems and gold. We entered cautiously, in case the cave was not abandoned, but as we examined the riches, we became cocky. It all began with a couple of words-"

The stranger clapped his hand over his mouth, turning to look into Shield's stern and serious eyes, all worries of sand and discomfort forgotten in light of the tale.

"Please forgive me, stranger," said the man. "I have said too much."

"Where is your bother now?" Shield asked, paying little mind to the man's apology

Two dark eyes regarded Shield for a long moment, and he looked right back into them, waiting for the man to assess him. Finally, with yet another deep, heaving breath, the man slumped his shoulders and bent over the bar, burying his face in his arms.

"He has fallen among thieves," the man said shakily, the weight of such heavy truths burdening his speech and body. "They heard our voices and ambushed us. I barely escaped with my life."

Suddenly, the man sat upright and grabbed Shield's hands, holding them in front of him as his dark eyes became wet with tears.

"Please, Stranger. My name is Ali. His name is Cassin. I have not the strength to save him, but if perhaps you or maybe your party does, would you please save him for me?"

Shield was moved by the man's plight, and he opened his mouth to accept the plea, but before he could speak, a dialogue box sprung to life, asking if he would like to accept the quest 'Arabian Nights.'

Of course it's a quest.

Breathing a sigh of relief that no actual players were in danger, Shield selected the option to accept and pulled up the map overlay for the quest.

An hour later, Shield was on the outskirts of Armadillo, turning his collar up in anticipation of the wind and sand once he set foot outside of the walls. With a gust, Shield felt tiny pinpricks of sand pelt against his skin, and he bowed his head, navigating more by map and the view of his feet than by anything else. Fortunately, the sun was already setting, which meant the heat would no longer be an issue.

Still, deserts get cold at night. I need to keep moving.

The map took him to the east, and when on occasion he would venture a glance ahead of him, Shield saw a cold, pale moon rising to chill the oncoming night. With the dying of the heat, so too did the wind subside, and before long, he was able to walk with his face forward rather than down in his map. Fortunately, with each rising dune that he summited, the blip of the cave grew nearer on the map.

As he crested the final dune, a faint golden glow came into view  that seemed to be spilling from the edge of the dune ahead of him. Squinting, Shield managed to discern the opening of a cave mouth half way up the next slope. He stepped as lightly as a heavy armor user can in impossibly deep sand, making his way with a very faint swish-swish of sand against his boots as he fought against the soft surface.

Making his way to the edge of the entrance, he peered inside. Rather than gold and jewels, however, the walls were lined with what seemed to be empty barrels, cast on their sides or some of them even flipped upside down.

Well, looks like I bought the fish story. Time to be the hero anyways.

He took a cautious step into the entry, followed by another. Stealth had not worked for Ali and his brother, and he knew it was not likely to be his friend either, so he opened his menu to swap out items in case he needed to do battle. With the gentle jingling of his menu, the cave exploded into noise and confusion. Four thieves erupted out of barrels, quickly surrounding Shield. He only just managed to swap out for his axe before they were upon him.

The four daggers that thrust at Shield each only found air as he just managed to avoid their points, and he swiped in a wide circle with his axe to create some distance between them. His stealthy assailants leaped back, brandishing their blades menacingly as the eyes of their wrapped faces glared through narrow slits at the intruder.

Shield assessed the gathering of cutthroats that surrounded him. They did not seem overly tough, and on the 5th floor, they shouldn't be too dangerous even if they did. As such, Shield eschewed his defenses and went in for the charge, striking at the first thief he could reach. His hit rolled off as if harmless, which did not surprise him much. His attacks were like nothing in the grand scheme.

The attacks that assailed him, however, did even less than that, and each actually succeeded only in damaging the attacker. Shield was pleased with how well his thorns-enhanced armor had worked for him thus. far.

I'll have to remember to doubly thank Teion for this little marvel.

After the exchange of blows, he checked his battle stats to confirm his well being, but seeing that he was still at full health, he was not in the least bit worried about the battle ahead of him.

The thieves looked at one another, unsure of what to do in the face of an enemy that they could not harm. Shield gave them a smirk before taking a step and swinging at the thief to the right of the one he had struck at before. This attack found purchase deep in the brigand's shoulder, and the victim cried out a muffled cry of pain through its cowl.

In retaliation, his brothers leaped at Shield, thrusting and slashing with their daggers, but having no more effect than their previous attack. With a heave, Shield pulled his weapon free from its resting place, rending a great portion of the thief's shoulder. The remaining crater leaked red particles in all directions, and with a smile of satisfaction, Shield knew his health would begin to drain from the injury.

"Anybody else want a taste of my axe?" Shield called out. "Not so wimpy now, is it?"

On the back swing of his axe, Shield spun, taking a slash behind him at the next thief. The sneak jumped nimbly out of the way, his keen eyes focused and intent. Swinging for Shield's face, the would-be attacker fell short, miscalculating his strike. The others, still wrong-footed from the armor that continually treated them more harshly than they were capable of treating it, swiped their daggers but connected with nothing, leaving Shield panting in the middle of them with not even a scrap of damage to recover.

"It's amazing you four were able to even handle any NPC's," he mocked, turning from one wrapped face to the next.

The wary degenerates circled the stalwart intruder, not knowing what to make of him just yet. Occasionally, one would make a step in his direction, but as he would turn their way to face him, they would immediately shrink back to the safe perimeter outside of his axe-swinging distance.

Despite seeming visibly rattled by both the ineffectiveness of their attacks, the thieves had remained completely silent, not letting out a word or a grunt, and barely a rustle of their capes and cowls. Whether an actual factor of their stealth abilities or merely mandated by the fiat of the programmers, this particular quest had a very eerie ambiance. It felt as if the desert was swallowing up their sounds.

Shield took a moment to asses their health bars, noticing that one was ever so slightly higher than the next highest. He turned to face that thief and swung, catching the cutthroat across the face. to his disappointment, although he had struck a critical blow, the axe had only torn away the cowl in places where the face had also been marred, leaving a glowing red gap.

I wonder if their faces even have a programmed texture or just the cloth as a skin.

Even as he took the time to ponder this, the sneaks struck, unleashing a barrage of strikes, each merely bouncing harmlessly off of his armor or missing altogether.

In the wake of their fruitless storm of daggers, Shield once again picked one of the healthier looking targets and took a swipe with the pointed tip of his axe's barb. The thief dodged back, using the coiled energy of his spring-compressed legs to launch himself forward, catching Shield between the ribs with his knife. The others launched their assault with him, but it was only with the extra spring in his step that his attack actually struck.

The damage did not even register, but immediately, Shield knew something was wrong. As the thieves moved around him to look for weaknesses in his defenses, he could not move to track them. He tried again. His feet stayed riveted to the spot. It took him a moment to put two and two together, but as he glanced down at his battle stats, he saw a little icon next to his health.

Paralysis... I might have known.

Fortunately, he could already see the icon beginning to flash, as if about to disappear. He only had to outlast for a few more seconds.

In the last few moments before the status effect lifted, the thieves took advantage of Shield's weakness. They darted in and out from one another, making quick but potent strikes at his shoulders and legs, each of which landed precisely as intended. Or at least, they landed. However, what was unintended was the futility of their strikes, none of which penetrated deeply enough to register beyond a momentary depletion of hit points, and all of which was immediately restored.

The thieves, on the other hand, each nursed wounds on their wrists and hands from getting too near to Shield's thorny armor, and one of whom were still bleeding from the strike of his axe. With a monumental effort, Shield forced his arm to move, just as the paralysis icon vanished from his display.

"An admirable attempt," he said, rotating his shoulder to test the full range of his motions. "However, I think we all know how this fight is going to end. Two of you are nearly half dead as it is."

The eyes that surrounded him narrowed at the sounds of his challenge. Each hand that held a dagger flipped, turning the dagger over to hold back-hand grip. As one, the four thieves advanced, closing in on Shield. He swung at the nearest, tearing off a portion of its shoulder, but it kept advancing despite its injury. Each blade made three downward stabbing motions, burying themselves up to their respective cross guards in Shield's chest, neck and back.

Despite the precision and ferocity of the strikes, Shield remained unfazed and undamaged. He stood, glaring with his dark, stern eyes into the eyes of the nearest thief. He was not sure if generated enemies were capable of true fear, but looking into the eyes before him, he wondered if this might be what it looked like. Shield pushed the thief back with his shield arm, watching the sneak tumble back and take a defensive stance as his companions did the same.

In their moment of uncertainty, it was Shield's turn to strike. He leaped at the healthiest of the thieves, swinging his axe high, missing on the fore swing, but cocking his elbow and swinging it back the other way. The spike dug in deep into the cowled temple of the thief before being torn free, sending a shower of red sparks to fill the air over its shoulder. As he glanced around at those whose wounds had begun to close, their masks had indeed mended themselves over the closed wounds.

I see. A little lazy on the part of the programmers, but I suppose it would be a bit much to have clothing maintain battle damage, wouldn't it?

Not wanting to be outdone, the band of thieves came at Shield, knife points bared. Though their attacks struck, the attackers were the only ones to suffer the damage, and all four thieves at once dropped into the yellow.

Good. I'm doing a good job of keeping the battle paced evenly. Keeping the pressure on, but making sure nobody drops too quickly. It's most efficient if thorns does most of the work for me, so if I'm just shaving off the top of the biggest hit point pools, that's how to make it count.

As he recounted his strategy in his head, the thieves rallied for another strike. Shield attempted to cut them off with a preventative strike of his axe, but his attack fell short. Quick, rapid fire attacks stabbed into his limbs, and once again, each attack proved less than fruitless. While a moment ago, each had dropped into the yellow, his thorned armor had done the trick and dropped the lot of them into the red.

"Just a matter of time, now," he boasted, puffing out his chest.

In actuality, he needed them to keep attacking to be most effective.

Although the battle seemed to be easily going his way, the thieves were becoming more skittish. They shifted nervously in their stances, seemingly unwilling to engage him now that their health was in the red. Shield took a step and swiped, clipping the edge of a thief's foot. The foot's owner danced away from Shield, shrinking back towards the wall, its knife point still out.

He tried to close the distance, but the thief darted the other way now. Wheeling around, he tried to find a thief close enough to attack, but each of them was playing it cautious, holding the same defensive stance.

"Well, this won't do," Shield said. "Maybe I should just go in and find your captive already, since you've given up."

Shield puffed his chest out once more, throwing back his shoulders as he strode forward. The thieves all looked at one another before leaping in his way to block him, baring their knives menacingly.

"I'm calling that bluff," he said with a scoff.

One step at a time, he kept walking. It was with great hesitation that those in his way acted, but as he drew level with them, they reversed their grips and made their triple strike attacks, having no more success than the last time.

Their life bars each depleted even further now, they sprang back and away from Shield, their hands against the wall and knives straight out towards Shield to stave him off.

"You cowards!" he called out to them, running at the strongest of them and nicking his leg.

The thief fled, not leaving the cave, but standing at a far distance. With a growl, Shield chased after them, one at a time. With each charge, the defender would slash feebly at Shield with their knife, but there was no fight left to them.

"This is the best floor five has to offer?" he spat, looking around from one scared set of eyes to the next. "Just a pack of cowardly thieves who are fine with jumping in my way, but too scared to finish the job?"

He swung down with his axe and kicked up sand off of the ground at the nearest thief.

"Fight me!"

The thief he had flung sand at, blinked, shielding its eyes as the sand pelted its face. Shield launched himself forward, slashing at every inch of the thief he could reach. It parried the incoming strikes, backing away from him as he pressed forward. The others attempted to jab at Shield to let up, but as soon as he so much looked at each of them, they shrank back, abandoning their attacks.

The fleet-footed enemies refused to get any closer to him. He lunged at them, and they would retreat. He would fall back to draw them in, but they would only follow so far. However, the tactic of continuing further down the cave seemed to prove effective before. His eyes shifted towards the back of the cave where the cavern seemed to narrow and dip down into a downhill slope. Slowly, he inched that direction, making his way towards that which the thieves had been programmed to protect. Fear or not, they could not defy their purpose.

Once again, he strode forward, ignoring their dagger points, walking boldly on towards the back of the cave. Nervously, they crowded hearer, prodding at Shield tentatively with their daggers, but having no effect on his resolve. One attempted to obstruct his path, and he did not hesitate in swinging his axe's barbed blade at the obstruction. It caught the corner of his shoulder as he tumbled away. In the moments after his strike, the thieves attempted to grab his arms, pulling him back towards the entrance.

"You may be cowards, but you're not stupid," Shield observed. "I'll give you that much. However, you're not going to be able to stop me like that!"

With a heave, Shield drug his legs forward, taking one labored step after the other, dragging the thieves with him.

"Too bad you aren't all a little tougher," Shield grunted. "This fight might have been something interesting. Instead, I'm left with a lukewarm bout of cleaning up cockroaches who flee in fear from my boot."

Now that he had their attention, Shield intended to keep it that way. He pushed against them all the harder, swinging with his axe to agitate them, though failing to connect with the cutthroat that he swung for. In answer to his strike, knife points began sinking into him, one after another, each trying to find the most deadly spot possible to dig in.

One stabbed into his temple. Another slipped in behind his collar bone. Yet another lanced into his eye, making it much harder to see, but then again, he did not need to see to continue walking.

"What do you think, cowards?" he barked at them between strained footsteps. "Are we ready to make this a real fight or not? You know what's going to happen if you refuse. It's just going to be more of this! You can't stop me like this, so your only option is to fight me and find another way!"

With that, the thieves all released Shield, gathering in front of them. Their silence persisted, though their resolve seemed to have solidified. He took a step nearer. They did not retreat, despite the fear that remained in their eyes. He took a second step. They flinched, but they held their ground. His angular jaw cocked to the side as he actually broke into a smile.

"Looks like we're finally listening to reason," he said, praising them for their decision. "Alright then... Let's make this quick."

Winding up, he swung overhand with his axe, striking down for the healthiest thief's head. It dodged to the side, spinning lightly on its feet inside of Shield's attack range. The others followed suit, stabbing at the tank with all of their might, but failing to connect for any amount of damage. The rogue who had slipped past his guard, however, managed to land his strike just under Shield's armpit. The attacker winced as his hands scraped the thorns of Shield's armor, and he retreated, now the closest of his companions to death.
