Quest Background:
At dusk, on the fifth floor in a random Tavern located in Armadillo you come across a NPC man named Ali, who drinks his sorrow at a bar. If you engage him in conversation he will start telling an unreal/fantastic story about how he found a secret cave full of gold and wondrous items. If you inquire why he is here drinking alone and sad, instead of partying in some extravagant way, he will tell you that the cave belongs to thieves and that they already captured his brother when the two tried to enter the cave.”It all began with a couple of words” he says on a slip of a tongue quickly getting nervous as he realised what he revealed until now. Then he will ask if you can go and save his brother Cassin that to his knowledge, was captured by the thieves and as a reward he says he will give you a nice sum of money if you bring him back. The coordinates for an ordinary thieves hideout are sent to you. A quest confirmation window shortly follows, appearing in his immediate vicinity, will you accept it?

Route options:

  1. (Hero route) - Save Ali’s brother and safely escort him back to the tavern.
  2. (Killer route) - Kill Ali’s brother for his golden ring that he hid from the bandits, but equips after being freed and become an Orange Player, as Cassin puts all his trust in his rescuers.
  • The thread creator chooses the route in his initial post, the rest of the participants agree with his decission by replying to the thread.
  • Regardless of the chosen route, players still need to kill/bypass all thieves.
  • At the end of the thread before locking, a staff member will roll and post the roll ID. This roll will be used in the later parts of this quest series.

Requirements:

  1. Thread must have at least 1 completed page of roleplaying. (21+ posts).

  2. Must roleplay talking to Ali at the Tavern before you accept the quest from him and after you return to the tavern to claim the rewards, in min. 3 posts. (in total, overall)

  3. Fight against the primary group(s) of thieves, rescue or kill Ali’s brother Cassim (depending on route options), then defeat the secondary group(s) of thieves when you return. (more information below)

  4. Any number of players can be take part in this quest. A party constitutes of 4 players max. If there is more than one party, the bandit number multiplies accordingly:
Total number of bandits = 6*(number of parties)
4(per group)*(number of parties) before freeing Cassim + 2(per group)*(number of parties) on the way back to Ali
Note#1: The secondary party can have between 1 and 4 members, a secondary team can be formed only when there are more than 4 players participating on this quest.

  5. In posts which contain multiple rolls for player and mobs, the roll order is as the following: Player roll -> Thief(s) roll.
Note#2: When more than one player team is present, attack turns are as the following: Player team 1 -> Bandit group 1 -> Player team 2 -> Bandit group 2 / etc.

Quest Mob Information:

             jjAS6MPm.jpg

<<Thief>> - A masked NPC in shady clothing of sand-like color wielding a dagger. Receives its(their) own dice roll!
When rolling for a thief or a group of thieves, make sure to use your own username. If you decide to do one roll for a group, the dice apply to every member of the group.
Example: on a successful hit for 'Tri Pierce' each bandit will use that specific sword art on the player with most hate in the party. In case that 2 or more players have the same highest amount of hate, the thieves will split equally in and attack those players.

Note#3: You CANNOT modify the preset stats for the thieves.
If this quest is taken as a Solo Party, the player can fight the bandits one after another using stealth mechanics. In a PP/OP the thieves spawn in groups.

Note#4: In a PP/OP, a player may attempt to skip fighting the thieves if they have invested at least 1 rank in the 'Sneak and Hide' skill; by applying the stealth mechanics. A player will still need to roll X number of times, one for each mob he/she tries to bypass. A player may try to act as bait for the group, if the thief's LD is higher than the player's 'Stealth Rating', the thief will attack the player (using that same roll dices) without alerting the other thief(s), making it possible to kill the mobs one by one. If a player bypasses any number of the required thieves, he/she can still go back and help the rest of the team; or try to bypass all, then leave the thread and finish the quest. Cassim must still be alive if this mechanic is used in the (Hero route).

Note#4A: If a player gets attacked by a thief while the rest of the team(s) fight, the player needs to fight the thieve alone until the rest finish their own fights. If a player has succeeded in getting past all the thieves, he/she will receive the rewards upon completing the quest, even if the rest of the team fails/dies. In this situation if the player is the only one to live he is allowed to double post until completing the quest.

Those who leave the party and don't attack Cassin received neither the ring or gain the orange PK cursor, even if they take part on the Killer route. The item cannot be traded as it's a unique quest reward.
  • The completion of this quest will be a prerequisite for continuing the series.

Quest Ending Description/Dialogue:

  1. (Hero route) - "Brother!!!" will be the first thing Ali shouts at the sight of his kindred, right before rushing to hug the one he thought off as probably dead. After the emotional reunion scene ends, Ali comes to you and places a large pouch filled with Col coins next to you "I can't thank you enough for this. I won't forget what you did for me, please accept this as a small token of my gratitude." he adds with a joyful expression. With one more "Thank you!" he goes to his brother and celebrate his return with opulence. If in any moment you ask him where he has all that money, he will become hesitant and try to avoid the subject, ultimately leaving the tavern/inn with his brother. In the same time, the Quest Ending Window pops in front of you, displaying your hard earned rewards. The col reward could act as potential proof that the 'cave of wonders' he talked about in his drunken state, when you first meet, could be real.

  2. (Killer route) - "I..... I see..." comes a faded response from Ali as his facial expression changes to one of grievance at the sight of only you (and your group) entering the tavern. He gulps the remaining of his drink then orders another one as he listens to what you have to say. At the end he says nothing and after taking a quick glance at you, he leaves. In the same time, the Quest Ending Window pops in front of you, displaying your hard earned rewards. The col reward could act as potential proof that the 'cave of wonders' he talked about in his drunken state, when you first meet, could be real.

Recommended Level: 15-20
Parties or Groups of players are recommended and encouraged.

Credits: Quest concept borrowed from the ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folktales. This quest is based on the "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" tale. It does not follow the story to the letter but has common elements.

Beat, the falcon tamer walked through the fifth floor, his head and face covered with the exception of his eyes as his survival skill kept him from succumbing to the harsh conditions, though it didn't not make them any more comfortable. Having spoken to an information broker, Beat had picked up a quest to help what he was told was a broken man who spent his fortune drinking in a tavern within a small safe zone in the middle of the desert.

Good thing Shield isn't with me on this one...

Beat's mind was heavy with the additional information he had gotten from the broker. In order to obtain an extremely unique set of handwraps, he would end up having to kill the brother of the NPC he was trying to help. Lying did not come naturally to him, in fact he was quite terrible at it, but he figured the NPC rarely picked up on behavioral tells, so he could at least get through it for the item he was after.

Beat’s stomach tightened as the tavern he had been looking for came into sight. Horus, sensing Beat’s unease squeezed his shoulder to comfort him, though it really only provided a brief distraction and moment of respite. The closer he got, the more he thought about the deeds he would commit that day.

NPC or not, it feels wrong. I suppose the fact that it weighs this heavily on me is a good sign.

Reaching the tavern, he quickly made his way inside, removing his head wrap and glad to be out of the harsh, sandy winds of the desert. The tavern itself was slightly run down, but it was warm and offered protection from the elements, so it saw its share of travelers like himself. He opened his map and spotted the quest NPC sitting at the bar.

Here we go…

Beat took the empty stool next to him and order a tall glass of water, deciding that if he needed a stiffer drink, he could certainly provide his own.

The bartender promptly brought Beat his drink and the player stared into the glass as he worked up the nerve to offer to help the NPC who he would end up betraying. The tightness in his stomach was not getting any better, but he figured it likely would not for some time.

Let’s just get this over with.

Beat took a deep breath and turned his head to look at the drunken, beaten man who was clearly drinking away his woes. Beat ordered another drink for the man, his guilt already pulling his stomach to the floor

“What brings you here my friend? You look as if you’ve had better days.” He said, managing to keep his stomach from flipping for the time being.

The somber man slowly turned his head and looked to Beat smiling slightly, appreciative of the interest. The man quickly began telling him a fantastic, though slightly hard to believe, story about a cave in the desert full of gold and wondrous items. Beat simply sipped his water and enjoyed the tale, momentarily forgetting about what he was planning to do.

Beat blinked a few times as he reflected on the amazing story he had just been told. If this were the real world, he would have never believed it, but in a video like Sword Art Online, anything was possible.

“That is quite the tale my friend. If such a wondrous place does exist, why are you here drinking alone instead of there?” Beat inquired, knowing the answer already.

Ali’s demeanor changed quickly, his excitement about the cave clearly being a front to hide the true reason he was there. With a long sigh and a big drink from his mug, Ali proceeded to tell Beat about the fact that the cave, while wondrous, belonged to a group of thieves who had taken his brother captive.

“It all began with a couple of words…” Ali began to say then trailed off, suddenly becoming nervous over what he was about to ask a perfect stranger.

“Please, save my brother from those thieves! I know no one else capable!”

Beat’s brow furrowed as the quest acceptance window came up. He hesitated, but eventually worked the guts up to press accept, giving Ali a reassuring smile.

“Oh thank you! Here is a map of the camp. It’s not far from here.” Ali said, handing Beat a paper map, which he simply synced with his HUD map for ease of use.

“Think nothing of it. I shall return once I find your brother.” Beat said, turning to leave so he could avoid having to look Ali in the eyes as he swallowed the emotions that welled up at the thought of what would happen once he did find Ali's brother. He was not a real person, but it was close enough for Beat.

He put Horus’s wrappings on him before wrapping his head and face, “Here we go, more sand!” He said as he opened the door and began his trek towards the bandit camp.

The desert night was just a little colder than it had been before entering the tavern now that the sun had fully set. Fortunately, the harsh, sandy winds had died down as well, making the trey much more bearable.

“The wind isn’t too bad, you mind doing some scouting for me?” He said, looking to Horus.

Horus, happy to be able to uncover himself and spread his wings happily clicked his beak before taking off. He flew high into the air, scouting ahead for the bandit camp they were looking for.

Okay, let’s do this!

With Horus flying ahead, Beat took off through the sand at a run, his speed at his level kicking up a good deal of sand with each step. Within minutes, Beat heard the familiar screech of his falcon familiar, letting him know that he had found something.

“Good boy.” Beat said with a grin, as he slowed his pace, not wanting to alert any guards to his presence.

As he walked over a tall sand dune, the smoke of a large campfire let him know that he had found his mark. The campsite was rather small and resided outside of a rocky wall that rose from the desert. A large cave opening appeared to be well lit, likely being used as a hideout for the gang of thieves.

Consuming Solid Chocolate Cake (+36 Mit)

Beat weighed his options as he traced a wide circle around the camp while Horus flew a patrol pattern over the camp while he waited for Beat to make his move.

“Well, I imagine there will be more resistance inside.” He said to himself as he began walking towards the camp, having no fear of only four guards. As intelligent as a stealth approach would have been, Beat had no ranks in sneaking, so the only real alternative open to him was to fight, which suited him just fine.

He jogged down the sand dune, down towards the camp, quickly attracting the attention of the bandits who appeared on guard, but had not yet made any sort of move. Beat walked into the light of the fire and casually warmed himself up as he eyed each of the rowdy looking bandits, who stared at him with their hands on their weapons as he happily ate a large piece of chocolate cake in front of the group.

This should be fun.

Beat and the bandits stared at one another for several moments before one of the bandits spoke up, his eyes glaring at the invader of their camp.

“You gonna tell us who you are and why you’re here, or do we just get to take your stuff and kill ya?” The bandit said, evoking a couple of soft chuckles from his comrades.

“I’m here for someone I believe you are currently holding captive. His brother misses him dearly and I have some unfortunate business with him.” Beat said, his confidence unwavering as he kept the smile on his face intact despite the tense situation.

The bandits drew their weapons as the braver one continued to speak, “Shame stranger. That just isn’t going to end well for you.”

Beat chuckled as he leaped over the fire and spun rapidly, his sword art whipping up a sandy twister that cut and buffeted the bandits on top of blowing out their fire. Their attempt at a counter attack was poorly executed and Beat had no trouble evading each attack.

“Gotta do better than that, boys!” Beat said with a chuckle.

“Those wounds look like they hurt. Maybe you guys should give up?” Beat said with a mocking tone in his voice as he watched the red slashes on their bodies drip red pixels.

The bandits paid Beat’s warning no mind and charged him, but as soon as they did, Horus swooped down and began swiping at them with his talons, completely disrupting their offensive as Beat brought his left leg across his body to release a wave of energy. The projectile screamed towards the bandits and crashed into them as Horus moved out of the way just in time.

“Piece of cake.” Beat said as his attack left nothing but a scorched fissure in the sand where the bandits had been.

Horus cried out happily in triumph as he landed on Beat’s shoulder as the player rummaged through the campsite, looking for anything of interest and the brother of Ali on the off chance they were keeping somewhere other than the cave.

Beat walked through the now defenseless campsite, inspecting each tent and treasure chest. Finding a small sack of old coins that seemed to have nothing but collector’s value. He spent a moment to admire a few of them and wondered about the lore that could possibly be behind them before stashing the find with the rest of his materials.

“I suppose it would be odd if I didn’t find money here. Too bad, it only has marginal value to me.” He thought aloud, receiving no real response from anyone except for Horus’s gaze.

With the campsite thoroughly searched, Beat found himself walking towards the entrance of the cave, hoping to see the treasures Ali had told him about. His hopes were met swiftly as gold coins began to line the ground and pile up on the sides of the cave after only a minute of walking through the oddly silent cave.

Maybe they’re all out looting? Seems odd to leave all of this treasure here and not guard it.

Beat spent the first few minutes of his walk through the cave attempting to walk over the scattered coins and treasures without making too much noise, but it quickly became obvious that this was an act of futility and he simply embraced the fact that he would be making far more noise than someone who was wanting to avoid trouble should ever make.

Not like I would mind some decent opponents anyways he thought to himself with a small shrug and a smile.

Almost as if he had made his desire known to a magic genie, four tall bandits burst from the piles of gold and drew their sabres across Beat's body, taking him entirely by surprise. Quickly regaining his composure, Beat spun around and put his heel into each face around him, throwing them back towards the piles of treasure.

"Nice one! This is more like it!"

Beat glanced at his health bar while the bandits took their time to recover from his counter attack. He couldn't help but smile as he noticed how little damage they did. He had taken precautions and made sure to bring plenty of healing and defensive items, but this was the first time he had soloed a quest without relying on his ability to dodge.

"Well boys, you're not too shabby, but I think you might be a bit out matched here. What do you think?" Beat said as he leaped backwards and spun twice in quick succession. The first spin created a twister that kicked up goblets, coins and various other valuables. The second spin sent that twister towards the bandits, who had no way of avoiding the wide whirlwind of painful coins and treasure. Despite his furious assault the bandits came charging anyways and managed to put more damage on the solo player.

Beat watched his health bar drop again and simply shrugged arrogantly at the bandits who were clearly doing their best. The blows they had managed to land were actually incredibly precise and Beat was glad he had taken the defensive precautions that he had.

Noted, mitigation food. Good.

"Well boys, you're doing well, but you're running out of time. Also, you sort of got unlucky having to fight a guy who can whip up tornados in a cave full of coins." He said, chuckling, as he prepared to use his martial arts to devastate them again as his left leg glowed brightly.

With a swift spin, Beat whipped up another tornado, kicking up more treasure which only served to amplify the shredding wind of the twister by pelting the poor bandits to death. The battle weary bandits picked themselves up again, but this time, with a little less finesse, inflicting less damage than before.

Beat shook his head as his health bar failed to budge as the sabres flew through him. He looked at the group of now intimidate bandits dangerously.

"I hope this treasure was worth your life. Heh, it probably was if we're being honest. Say goodnight baddies!" Beat yelled as his leg glowed once again. He spun around, whipping up more sand that ncoins this time since his last attack had blown most of the treasure away. Beat figure sand would probably hurt even more than coins somehow.

At least coins might knock you out. Sand is just mean.

The bandits were gradually eroded by the sandy whirlwind created by Beat's attack, which quickly died down, leaving Beat with a pleasing loot screen.

"Hey! Not too bad for this floor! Mats are always useful and Shield might like the armor for his shop." He said as he proceeded back down through the cavern, quickly remembering what he was going to have to do once he found Cassim.

Beat wiped the sweat from his brow as he flipped through the loot screen, pleased with his fortune. Tier one materials weren’t as useful as tier two, but they were still good for certain consumable enhancements. He flipped through his menus as he waited for Horus to catch up. The falcon had been somewhat preoccupied with hunting in the desert night, enjoying the different game that could be found there compared to his home floor.

“Come on Horus! We’ll go hunting after this!” Beat calmly called out after his familiar. A dull screech could be heard from the falcon outside and within a few moments, the large Hayabusa falcon could be seen flying through the cave.

“Good hunting out there?” Beat said with a smile as the avian landed on his shoulder and dropped and jeweled necklace in his hand. Beat admired the treasure for a moment before stashing it away with the rest of his materials.

With his familiar accompanying him once again, Beat continued to make his way through the treasure filled cave, wishing that at least some of it was worth something in the game. He could understand the needs for aesthetics and environment settings, but it didn't help him to feel like all of that gold was just a waste.

"Man, it sucks that all of this is less than garbage to a player. Need to find this place in real life." Beat said with a chuckle as he spotted a large ornate chest sitting within a particularly large pile of treasure.

"That looks promising!" he said excitedly as he skipped off of the walking patch and through the sea of coins to reach the chest. Surprisingly, the chest was not locked and when it opened, a second mountain of coins poured out before Beat could dig through it. A rushed search through the worthless contents of the chest revealed nothing of value.

Beat let out an exasperated sigh as he found himself covered in treasure, none of which would end up doing him any good, though Horus seemed intrigued by a particularly impressive miniature statue of the falcon god, Horus, the familiar's namesake. Beat lifted it up and turned it around several times, admiring the craftsmanship and making sure to give Horus time to appreciate it as well.

"Thinking we should keep this one. Sentimental value is probably the only thing we'll find here anyway." Beat said to his familiar, stashing the vanity item away and standing up out of the pile of coins, creating a ruckus that was sure to attract attention.

"Okay let's get this over with quickly yeah?" Beat said as he ran through the cave at his impressive full speed. Descending some steps, Beat came to a three way intersection of passageways with footsteps approaching from the right. With his gut telling him left, he turned left and bolted through the dimply lit cave until he reached a wooden door with a barred window. He approached and peered through the bars, seeing a man in the corner who matched Ali's description of his brother.

"Found you." Beat said solemnly with a sigh as he tried the door, being forced to pull it from its hinges. Cassim perked up immediately and greeted his rescuers excitedly.

"Did my brother send you?! Oh thank god. I thought I would die here!" The man exclaimed, evoking a lurch from Beat's guilty insides.

"I'm so sorry Cassim." Beat said as he struck the back of Cassim's head with lethal force, ending his life.

"Just an NPC...Just an NPC..." Beat muttered to himself as he retrieved Cassim's ring and pocketed it as the rushing foot steps grew louder.

"Alright Horus, one more fight and we're done here!" Beat said, readying himself for battle.

With the deed done, Beat took a deep breath as he struggled to fight back the feelings of guilt that were consuming his thoughts as the charging footsteps of the guards thundered down the passageway, drawing nearer and nearer to the waiting martial artist.

It was only an NPC, so why did my cursor turn orange and why do I feel like the man I killed was real? Maybe part of the game? Can the nerve gear actually control my emotions? I would say that would be immoral, but making this game a prison is already guilty of that.

Beat waited until the torchlight of the guards could be seen nearing the doorway before unleashing his attack, spinning once to create a twister and once more to send it down the hallway. The guards screamed as the whirlwind blew through them, shredding them along the way.

“Ugh, it’s not the same!” Beat said angrily, wishing his attack had made him feel better like he had hoped.

The bandits eventually picked themselves up as the dust from Beat’s attack began to settle. Normally such a thing would simply urge Beat to hit harder, but this time, his motivation to attack again came from a sense of self-loathing, something he wasn’t familiar with or able to identify in the moment. All he knew was that he felt guilty and he would do anything to be left alone.

“Leave me be!” Beat shouted angrily. He gritted his teeth as he spun once more, this time simply enveloping his foes inside the debris filled twister, ripping two of the weaker thieves to shreds.

“You can run now, or I’ll kill you too…lord knows I need to hit something right now.” HE said dangerously as he glared at the two elite bandits who had managed to whether two twisters so far.

Why won’t they just leave me alone? I need to be alone with my thoughts.
