"And how am I already back here on the fifth floor?" Shield sighed to himself, brushing back his unkempt mane as he squinted into the desert sky. "Every single quest in this godforsaken game is either in the desert or in the tundra." Norbert, who he always felt bad for when visiting this floor, was currently swimming around in the fountain of the square, or rather walking along the bottom in circles, trying to find a means of escape. "I don't know where you're trying to get to, buddy, but I promise you that on this floor, it's going to be less comfortable than where you are now," he said apologetically, reaching down and drumming his fingers on the snapping turtle's ridged carapace. He saw some bubbles rise to the surface around where the creature's head was and could just imagine the moody little turtly grumble he must have made under the water. "Yeah, yeah. You're such a victim." Shield checked his HUD for the time before glancing around, trying to spot Beat in the crowd. He had arrived a little early to give Norbert his cool down swim, but it was getting to be about the time they had agreed to meet. @Beat Edited April 20, 2017 by Shield
Beat 0 Posted April 17, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) Beat stood on the teleportation of the eleventh floor and released a sigh before speaking, "Fifth Floor..." The pad glowed and whisked the player to his spoke destination, the heat hitting him immediately, causing him to wince as if someone had punched him in the face. "Guh, this heat. This dragon is getting it harder than the last one." Beat grumbled as he pulled up his map and turned towards Shield, who was already looking at him. He smiled and gave a wave as he walked over. "First cold, not scorching heat with sandy wind. Cool. Love this quest." Beat said, rolling his eyes. He smiled as he turned his attention to Norbert, "Glad to see you're in such a good mood, Norbert." Beat said as he lightly rapped the turtle's shell with his fingers. "Alright, let's get this over with, shall we?" He said, leading the pair out of the safe zone, only to be met with sand filled winds and more heat. Shield 0 Posted April 18, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted April 18, 2017 (edited) There were more angry bubbles as Beat tapped on the shell, but despite the protests, Shield grabbed the turtle on the ridge of carapace behind its head and the back of it above the long, alligator-like tail before lifting him out and setting him into the harness. The reptile tried to flee, but Shield knew it well enough to expect as such and held the top of the shell with one hand as he affixed the harness with the other, eventually slinging the hissing reptile onto his back. "Let's go," he said, waving his hand to gesture for Beat to follow as he made for the exit. The trip through the desert was as unpleasant as always, complete with blazing sun and pelting winds, a true bouquet for the sense. Shield did as he usually did in the desert, keeping his head down and navigating by HUD map to follow his objective. They made their way to a small oasis, which supposedly made sense. One of the prior dragons had been sunning itself, so in the powerful sun, a means of cooling would be preferable. There on the moist bank, laying on possibly the only patch of green in the entire floor, lay the dragon. Its head was ridged along the contours of its skull, with thorny looking wings and back to match. As soon as they were within combat space, its head popped up off of its foreclaws and it took to the air. Pulling down the Manticore Mask that sat atop his head, he took a hopping step and rushed forward, axe raised. As he closed the distance, the leather-bound wings of the dragonling kicked up sand from the nearby landscape and sent gusts up into both adventurers' faces. His axe fell wide, his eyes stinging from the sand and failing him. However, the eyes of the mask flashed menacingly, drawing the focus of the little dragon. With a midair tumble, it sent its tail crashing into Shield's shoulder, but even as it did so, a burst of flames and a series of red marks up the tail indicated that the dragon felt the hit far more than Shield did. Beat smirked at the patch of green that the dragon rested on. It appeared that life could thrive in certain places in the desert, just no where they had ever been, which was saying something considering how many times they had been there. "Greedy guy, hogging all of the green plants for himself." He said with a smirk, ready to end the fight quickly. He shielded his face as the dragon kicked up the sandstorm that simply added to the sandy winds already blowing through the area, but from behind his forearms, Beat stared at the spot the dragon had been. "You think your tricks will save you!?" He yelled as he charged forward and burst through the cloud of sand, surprising the reptile long enough for his strongest sword art to sink directly into the side of his target's head. The dragon screeched as it crashed into the sand, kicking up a decent amount of sand upon impact. Edited April 18, 2017 by Beat

Taking advantage of the downed beast's weakness, Shield ducked low and rushed forward once again, bringing his axe crashing down on the little monster's body. With the dragon already bleeding, there was little hope to do much of any significance, but with the extra hate it generated from succeeding on the strike, it means that even if Beat missed, they would be set for the next round. That, and it was more fun that way. The little wyrm let out a screech of anger, leaping up into the air and lashing out with a quartet of claws, but in its blind rage, each strike missed, despite Shield's inability to maintain a proper guard in the torrent of sand and wind. "It's on its last legs," he called out to Beat. He wasn't sure how well the other player could see its health gauge, but either way, the fight shouldn't be lasting much longer. "Itsutsu no ken!!" Beat shouted as his arms turned into a pair of blurs, striking the reptile in strategic vital points that left it bleeding more than it had been before. Beat simply stood over the whimpering dragon and smiled, folding him arms and watching the dragon's health bar drain slowly as the renewed bleed effect did it's job. "Alright, that's it. It'll bleed out before it gets a chance to try and work a miracle to hurt you. Fat chance of that anyways." He said with a chuckle, looking around for the gem. With the dragon's death now inevitable, Shield tried his hand at one last swipe, catching the edge of the thing's wing, but not doing enough to put it down. It went to retaliate, but even as it pulled back its tail, the last of its health drained away, and with a shattering sound of broken glass, blue polygons scattered into the dying winds, and both they and the sandstorm were gone as if they had never been there. Satisfied with their work, Shield gave a nod and examined the rewards. "And yet another gemstone," Shield observed aloud. "Unfortunately, nobody has completed the quest chain to say what these items accomplish. They could perhaps form together into some greater item... but that's speculative at best." The gems themselves were worth no amount of currency and considering they were tagged as quest vanity items, it made sense that their purpose would be revealed once they had completed the quest line. "That would make sense. Quest lines like these are rarely a simple excuse to chain quests together. Add to that, the rewards for these hunts are relatively low, I'm betting that the end of this quest chain will be pretty impressive. At least I hope so." He said before opening his inventory and swapping his weapon for his gift from Shield that would serve to make their hunting more productive. "Well, I say we do some hunting. Until these fights get more interesting, all they do is make me crave a decent fight, not that farmable mobs give me that, but they can at least take a few hits." As he looked, he didn't notice anything noteworthy, but then he saw something in his other side's periphery. Before he realized what was happening, four mounds rose in the loose dirt of the ant hill in a square pattern surrounding them. As the earth cleared off of them, four massive humanoid ant creatures wearing cross-patterned tabbards took shape, their claws easily the size of either of the players. Shield grimaced and let out a growl, charging the nearest one and swiping his axe at its leg. The limb gave way, red pixels gushing from the bright red gash that formed along where the blade had struck. The ant's club-like fist came down on top of him like a hammer, though its impact was minimal to the stern-faced man, which for the ant it actually seemed to have taken a chunk out of its health. The others attempted the same, but much to the same result, their fists knocking Shield a foot or so in either direction, but not leaving him any significant harm. He continued to retrieve his drink for his inventory, but was clearly displeased by the interruption. "Man, no respect for a man who likes to enjoy his drink." He said scoffing as he proceeded to down the lumberjack shaped bottle of rum with haste, the flavor still satisfying, but the alcohol burning on the way down. The drinks Beat made were not meant to be savored quickly and the fact that he couldn't enjoy his drink further motivated him to punish them more harshly. "What the? The fart is an anty...paladin? DO they mean anti-paladin? Oh god, they do...son of a butt." He said, taking the last swig of his lumberjack themed rum and threw the bottle to the ground, his balance shifting a bit from the effects of the drink. "Yeah, you're extra dead. The other ant creatures, their segmented eyes following Shield, swarmed onto his location, pummeling fists into his head and back. Shield 0 Posted April 20, 2017 Author #17 Share Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) As the laughter and the battle both died down, Shield set himself down on the ground and leaned back on his hands, looking up at the sky for a moment to give Beat time to recover himself. He didn't speak, leaving the silence to hang in the air. It wasn't often that the two of them just took time to sit. For that matter, it had been a long time since he had just taken time to sit. With the threat of upcoming floor boss battles, Shield had been pushing himself to try to new heights and further beef up his tanking abilities. It had paid off, and he was nearly finished with his armor skill tree, but at the price of becoming more than a little worn down. After a long while, Shield pushed himself back up onto his feet, dusting himself off as he swapped out his combat gear for his loot gear. Spoiler Swapping gear: - Pain Drinker (-54 Regen), -1 Bloody Hell (-2 dmg, -24 bleed), + Finder's Keeper (+1 skill rank: search & detect), +Seeking Aura (+3 LD) ID# 82815 results: Loot: 15 + 3 item + 1 skill + 1 skill item = 20 - +1 Material (1 total) As soon as his Seeking Aura earring was in place, the glow on his shoulder told him there was loot to be found nearby. At his foot, there was a stone which he turned over to reveal the characteristic red staining of iron ore. He recovered the item and stored it away for later use. "You ready to go?" Beat 0 Posted April 20, 2017 #18 Share Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) Spoiler ID# 82816: LD: 11+5 = 16 = 1 T2 Mat found (1 Total) Beat next to his friend, slowly catching his breath and the effects of the booze again tying the pain in his side for his attention rather than being an afterthought. His eyes followed Shield's hands as they retrieved the iron ore, noticing a remaining shimmer in the divot left in the ground. He slowly leaned up and dug in the ground for a moment with his fingers, retrieving a fist-sized chunk of quartz. "Shiny." He said as he admired the chunk of mineral before stowing it away into his inventory. "Yeah, I'm ready....sorry for the laughing fit by the way...those were some really stupid enemies though..." He said as he rose up and began walking towards their home, his eyes peeled for any hidden dungeons near their home due to recent success in the area. "Wonder if there are any more surprises in this canyon. Another Dungeon perhaps?" He said, hopeful that he had not jinxed himself. Edited April 20, 2017 by Beat
Shield 0 Posted April 20, 2017 Author #19 Share Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) "We've found a few there before," Shield said with a shrug. He was tired, but with quests running thin, it was well worth the extra little walk to take the long way. He led them down the rocky slope to the outcropping that hung over the gorge. The path followed a hairpin turn around the narrow ledge. Shield grabbed Beat's shoulder, steering him to keep him away from the edge as they navigated their way along the downward back and forth path, each pass of which brought them closer to the canyon floor. When they were low enough, Shield released Beat's shoulder. Spoiler ID# 82818 results: Loot: 20 + 5 = 25 - +1 Material (2 total) Upon reaching the bottom, the shade cast by the sides of the canyon shut out enough light to see the glow cast by Seeking Aura. Looking at his feet, he saw a large flake of flint that had broken off from the surrounding rock. Bending down, Shield discovered that it bore an item tag. Storing it away, he beckoned for beat to follow him and struck out on the path that followed the canyon. Edited April 20, 2017 by Shield
Beat 0 Posted April 20, 2017 #20 Share Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) Spoiler ID#82828: LD: nope = no dungeon found Beat ignored the glowing ring on his finger that was practically begging him to retrieve the diamond sticking up out of the ground as he literally stepped on the stone, burying it out of sight. His eyes scanned the walls eagerly, his hope perhaps a little too high, partly due to his enthusiastic nature that was only amplified by the strong alcohol he was still doing his best to manage. "Aww man. I think I got my hopes up for nothing." He said as they drew nearer and nearer to their home, knowing that the dungeons often spawned randomly and stayed in place until cleared, so he knew that nothing was impossible. Unfortunately, the duo reached their home with no dungeon in sight. "Alright Doc, call it." Beat said with a heavy sigh, opening their front door and walking inside, heading to his cafe, "Hungry? I've got something that should sober me right up." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rewards 3 SP (1 Length, 2 quest) 4,630 col <Tabaluga’s Topaz> [Vanity Quest Item] : 1 of 9, collect all 9 and meet whom that waits before you, only then will you get the grand prize.
