History (Before SAO)

With neither the most difficult nor the easiest childhood, Estelle grew up with what she always considered an average lifestyle. Due to a promising job offer, her family made the huge decision to move from America to Japan when Estelle was just ten years old. The transition was difficult for all of them, but she managed to adjust more quickly than her older brother, James, and spent more time embracing the cultural differences than fussing over the adjustment. Their mother, though busy with work for most hours of the day, was as kind and caring as she could manage through the stress. Once she was old enough to understand everything she did for them, Estelle respected her mother and looked up to her for the personal sacrifices she made so readily for her family. As much as she wished they could spend more time together, she eventually learned that she had to be grateful for everything her mother provided for them, and would appreciate the simplest of interactions as she grew older.

In stark contrast, Estelle had difficulty finding any positive feelings towards her father. It hadn't always been that way, but the move seemed to take a harsher toll on him than anyone, and perhaps somewhere along the line he cracked under the weight of the stress. When the man wasn't also kept busy with his own work, he seemed to make further efforts to stay away from his children. And when he wasn't avoiding them, it wasn't out of the ordinary for their father to berate the siblings, seemingly desperate enough to take out his frustrations on whatever--or whoever--was available to him to the time. Estelle did her best to put up with the outbursts, often times using her newfound interest in art and music at the time as an escape from the harsher sides of reality, but James seldom found such refuge.

Going to school was only sometimes less stressful than the bad nights at home. Throughout high school, Estelle typically kept to herself and wasn't very outgoing. Considering how bubbly and personable the girl had always been in previous years, her change in attitude was rather odd, but she had plenty of reason to withdraw. Much like her brother's experience, her blonde hair and struggle to fully grasp a second language was all the other children needed to treat her differently. She seemed to inherit some of James' bullies or their younger siblings--kids who would most frequently take the opportunity to insult and ostracize both of them at once. When her brother's temper grew worse and he began to develop a fiercely protective personality when it came to his sister, the most obvious bullying subsided. Excelling in her studies and quick to avoid confrontation, Estelle took most any opportunity to do someone's homework if it meant they would agree to leave them alone, however briefly.

Time passed, high school ended, and the bullies gradually disappeared. Estelle was left with a very passive and self-sacrificial nature, opting to go out of her way to please others whenever possible. After graduation, Estelle was caught between a crossroads of pursuing a career in the arts or teaching. Oddly enough, she hated the thought of combining the two, but neither were regarded as practical choices as far as her parents were concerned. She and her brother remained incredibly close, moving out together just before she continued her studies at an arts college in Kyoto. Her brother worked full-time to support them both, and despite his protests she spent any break periods she had picking up work and doing her best to contribute.

A couple of years later, after having tried his best to cultivate an interest of video games in his little sister, James revealed that he had reserved a copy of Sword Art Online and the Nervegear system for each of them. Originally critical of what she thought to be such an irresponsible thing to spend so much money on for himself--let alone her--she could only give him a hard time for so long. So, with an undeniable interest of her own, she took to the world of Aincrad.

Virtues:

Free: After creating her avatar in Sword Art Online, Estelle was able to feel an immense weight lifted from her shoulders. The burdens she carried in the real world, from a difficult home life to the people who would bully and tease her at school, vanished completely. The sense of freedom that has filled her ever since is part of what allows her to make the most of daily life in Aincrad. Despite being trapped in a virtual world with its own hardships, Estelle feels as though she has been given another chance to take control of her life.
Sincere: Estelle has always been an earnest and genuine type of person. Her sweet and kind-hearted nature is something that has always persisted, and going out of her way for others is a habit that is unlikely to fade. She's a terrible liar, and save for her recent pursuit for the frontlines it is rare for her to hide her intentions from others. She is well aware that she wears her feelings on her sleeve, and learned to accept it as a part of herself many years ago.
Artistic: Estelle developed an artistic skill throughout her childhood, most often using it as an escape from the stresses of life and as a means to express herself. Her most prominent skill lies in the violin, something she dedicated herself to over the last few years leading up to the launch of SAO. She isn't afraid to step outside of her comfort zone when it comes to creativity, however, and back home she would enjoy experimenting with different art styles and mediums when she had the chance.

Flaws:

Emotional: Something that has plagued her all her life, Estelle is quick to let her feelings take her over. She's easy to upset and rile up, especially when it comes to the people close to her, but it's just as easy to put a smile on her face. Like her brother, she's grown more protective over those she loves and in rare cases her temper may flare up. She's awful at hiding her true feelings, and often times they drive her actions before she takes the time to fully thinks things through.
Cautious: This world is beautiful, but it's also dangerous. Estelle has had a few too many close calls so far in Aincrad, and she's seen too many of her loved ones get hurt. Too many times did her recklessness end up complicating things, and so her habits have driven her hard in the opposite direction as of late. Where she used to throw herself into danger, now she hesitates. Fear isn't quite the right word, but now she carries a seed of caution in everything she does.
Inflexible: Change is difficult. Something Estelle didn't expect to develop, however, is an emotional rigidity that has left her struggling to adapt to change. Despite the very essence of freedom that once made her feel at home in this virtual world, the careful monotony of a safe and secure lifestyle--even a "fake" one--easily made the harrowing life of a frontliner look all that more deadly. One bad fight waiting to happen. Now, Estelle struggles deeply with the idea of clearing all 100 floors of Aincrad in the pursuit of returning home.
