Shield 0 Posted December 4, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2017 (edited) With so few players who were willing to spend as much time and energy on plumbing its depths, Shield had spent most of his days as of late farming in the deep caves of the 21st floor. However, with his progression into the more offense-focused tanking skills, he ran the numbers, and he found that, in small doses, fighting a few foes was entirely feasible without taking terribly long to whittle them down. He remembered a spot where he and Hirru had farmed mushroom mobs and decided that familiar territory was better when attempting new things. While on the way, he took a moment to check all of his gear, from his Manticore Mask shield, to his various heavy armors that he wore, adding to his thorns damage and energy recovery. Along the way, he downed an Immolation Potion to prepare himself for the fights to come. He arrived at a cluster of mushrooms, each stalk easily over ten feet tall, just as they let out a puff of spores. From the clouds of pungent particles, four walking mushrooms took shape, focusing in on Shield and descending like a pack of wolves, swinging their great club-like hands. Shield was already prepared, his sword out and ready to meet the first of the fungal warriors. He remained unmoved, but his health bar took more of a hit than it had in quite some time. He flicked his wrist and called down to the stowaway in his sleeve. "Lilith! You're on!" A colorful, scaled head poked its way out of his shirt. The bush viper reared back and bared its fangs, striking Shield in the wrist. It was like being injected with a healing salve. Immediately, his health surged back a good chunk of the way to full. He knew that his regeneration would likely cap him out and waste some of the heal, but there was a cooldown, and he had a feeling he'd need to stay on top of that if he was going to keep his head above water. The first myconid, seemingly vexed by its poor aim on its first attack, whipped around and struck Shield in the sternum with a back fist. He caught the blow with his blade, but could not slow it down enough to stop it entirely. Still, even with the critical strike, it did next to no damage. The other three blows landed normally, finding a shoulder or a portion of rib cage to strike. The damage individually was not great, but added up, Shield noticed a toll on his health. Even despite his battle healing skill being maxed out, he had still dropped below a thousand hit points, and for the first time in quite some time. He shook it off. The first of the foes had already dropped below half health, and if he stayed focused, he might be able to drop one in the next few hits. Their pale blue spongy fists bounced off of him again and again. Their material was hardly dense, but the club like appendages were large enough to have real weight to them. He seemed to be adapting to them though. None of the attacks managed to catch him off guard this time. He kept his pace, parrying and blocking everything that came his way as their health bars continued to deplete due to his thorns and flame aura. Still, as their health drained, so too did his. A blocked hit was not a harmless one in SAO, unless one's stats were high enough to permit it. In this case, Shield was keeping up, but his familiar's heal was going to come right down to the wire on his yellow gauge unless he dropped a mushroom, and soon. All the while, as he deflected and intercepted blows with either of his hand slot items, the first two, seeming to have taken the initiative in the fight, each dropped all the way through their yellow gauges and into the red. Last thirty percent then. Even as he thought this though, he had to keep an eye on his own health. It had been a point of pride that his health remained so consistently in the green. There had only been one instance where it had dropped below, and he doubted if anyone had been paying close enough of attention to make note of it. He decided a long time ago that what other players didn't know wouldn't hurt him. Helps to have that feather in my cap. Can come in handy when trying to talk my way out of fights. However, one of the creatures was dangerously low on health. Shield marked him. Even just dropping one would be a turning point that would help him keep up his regeneration. It wound up for a powerful overhand strike, and Shield was more than prepared. He spun to the side, stepping out of the way of most of it while cutting through the offending arm with his blade. The foe erupted in a spray of light blue polygons which in turn vanished into the air. Just as Lilith's cooldown gauge refilled, the last two dropped down into the yellow portions of their gauges. "Perfect timing." He was distracted. The second mob caught him across the jaw, managing to avoid the damage of his thorns. He swore under his breath, but he did not let it faze him. He was turning this fight around. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield

Two down, two to go. And they're already looking bad. He looked more closely at their health, and sure enough, one was already in the red. He could tell that he did not have enough firepower to one-shot either of them from their current health, but two-shotting them seemed more than reasonable. Ducking behind his shield, he could easily absorb the worst of impacts while extending his blade underneath the barrier, forcing opponents to more or less run onto his sword. "You know," he called out to the unintelligent non-beings, "in olden times, it was a warrior's way to commit suicide, to run onto a sword that someone else held. This is more or less the same as that." He pulled out his blade and kicked the monster back, watching it stumble as it held onto only the last little remnants of its hit points. "You lucky little bugger," he scoffed. "Well, lucky for the moment, at least." He was nearly as low now in his green gauge as he had been a moment ago, but he also was able to almost completely eliminate one source of damage with a parry and recover most of what was lost with his battle healing. Some claimed that when your numbers were high enough, you became invincible. While that was not entirely the case, in certain situations, it might seem to be. He ducked the first fist that came his way, forcing his sword up the arm and dividing it into pixelated polygons as if he had stuck his finger up the middle of the water coming out of a hose. The rest of the mushroom vanished, as did his companion whose fist had met a similar fate on Shield's back. He straightened up, opening up his display from the fight. He wondered if he could control the rate of spawn if he took a few of them out. After all, one or even two of the things was not a problem for him. He hacked away at two of them with his sword, and sure enough, they did vanish. There were immediately clusters of mushrooms that sprouted at the base of each, with one elongating faster than the others to apparently grow up and replace the others, but for now, they did not seem able to fulfill their function. Just as Shield had straightened up, one of the remaining two mushroom spawners puffed out a cloud of spores. He raised his sword, attempting to block the incoming attack, but apparently the mushroom had been just as surprised by its sudden appearance and missed him altogether. "...huh..." The second myconid struck him in the shoulder. The damage registered, but with Lilith's abilities nearly recovered, that was inconsequential, especially considering his static recovery. Its attacks swung from the shoulder, a clumsy barrage of left handed hay makers, essentially. This only made Shield's job all the easier, as he effortlessly knocked the attacks to the side, taking away pieces of the fungus' health bar with each new parry. He did not even need to worry about the second, whose attacks were going to do a very small amount of damage to him overall. In his sleeve, he felt the twitching of his snake familiar's tail, and he gave his wrist a subtle flick. She followed his meaning, and with a a whip of her ropy body, she uncoiled from his arm just enough to sink her fangs in to heal him. With that, she vanished into the folds of his clothing and retreated under his armor. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield

Out of the corner of Shield's eye, he saw that the two mushrooms that he had cut down to limit spawns were beginning to regrow. He did not know how long the others would take to repeat their spawn, but a new opponent might not go amiss. Two sets of hands came windmilling in towards him. With the first, he was able to let the strikes fall onto the edge of his sword, leaving a long gash under the attacker's hand. The other merely fell on his shoulder, relatively harmlessly. In the aftermath, both monsters had lost health, and the first one substantially so. Pushing his way through the remaining myconids, diverting and resisting their attacks as he went, he made for the spawn mushrooms. As the myconid behind him burst from its sustained damage, he made short work of the mushroom spawners, leveling each of them to the ground. With that out of the way, and only one remaining foe, Shield was ready for a nice, leisurely end of the fight. He paced his way back to his opponent and held out the point of his sword, ready and waiting for its inevitable attacks. "Looks like it's just you and me, big guy," he mocked, probing at the unintelligent foe with both sword point and pointed words. Odds are, he'll respond to at least one of those words. Might as well have fun with him either way. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield

He suspected some combination of both. It barreled in after him, fists flying, pounding at every inch of Shield it thought it could reach. He extended either his sword or his shield towards each of these attacks, sustaining, and even allowing to grow, his hit points. He was nearly back to a thousand, and even if this spore brain managed to crit him every attack, that would not save it nor harm Shield. "You've just seen the effectiveness of the Immovable Object," he said with a smirk. "Much stronger than you have tried and failed to make a scratch in my defenses. By all means, though. Keep doing my job for me." Even before the fight was ended, Shield began searching out of the corner of his eye to see if there would be a chest to plunder. He had found them here on occasion. He hoped now might such a time. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield

Shield merely held up the edge of his blade, dividing the punch in half so that it missed on both sides of him. With next to no damage even resulting on Shield, the last myconid warrior exploded into light and was gone, leaving Shield alone in a cavern lined on all sides by ridges of glowing fungal growths along the wall and a number of giant, decorative mushrooms. The only ones capable of spawning new monsters were gone, at least until their little clusters of glowing caps finished regrowing into full sized towering mushrooms. He set about searching the room, digging through his inventory for the items he would need to boost his abilities to search for rare items. The first was a simple silver earring. The second was a silver earring with gold inlaid wire which lit up when Shield was near anything valuable. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield
Shield 0 Posted December 6, 2017 Author #18 Share Posted December 6, 2017 (edited) Quote Swapping Gear: - Spirit Spines - Spirit Plate + Finder's Keeper + Seeking Aura He located both of the trinkets in his inventory, swapping out his combat gear. With a flash of light each, his puoldrons and chest plate disappeared, leaving only his canvas shirt and leather gauntlets underneath them. Although he was used to the weight of his armor, it was nice to go without. He scoured the chamber, searching the walls with his hands as he watched for the telltale glow of his earring. In the relative quiet of the cave, he took a more leisurely pace than he generally did while searching. Usually, he was under the gun, always scraping and searching and making the most of the time he had. However, from the glances he had seen of his loot that had already dropped, he was already coming out on top for this venture, even if he took it easy for a few minutes. While he searched, he also checked to make sure that he had the proper item at the ready in case he did find a chest. A curious new item it was, just a simple golden key, but with so little in the game actually aiding players in their chest loot finds, a little bonus was nothing to sneeze at. Shield 0 Posted December 6, 2017 Author #19 Share Posted December 6, 2017 (edited) Quote ID# 91805 results: Loot: 6+5=11 - No mats So far, the search had been unproductive, and Shield wondered if he might be better off simply fighting the mushrooms again once they regrew. For now, he would leave them alone. He made a second sweep around the room, this time making sure to lean his head closer to the walls and floors in certain spots in case his earring had simply not been near enough to activate. In his sleeve, he felt Lilith's cool body slide its coils around his arm as she regripped him. He smiled a little to himself. Feels like I'm not the only one getting a little restless at the lack of activity, eh girl? He took a seat on the floor, filling his lungs with the cool, damp air of the twenty first floor caverns. There was definitely a beauty about the place, though he had taken to little time in recent weeks to appreciate it. Still, he felt as if even stopping to admire it now meant taking too much of a break. Edited December 6, 2017 by Shield

Lilith snaked her way once again from his sleeve, this time to lie in a pile of coils in his open palm. "Well, girl, we didn't find any caches of arcane, mystical items," he said with a sigh. "We're not leaving empty handed though. We have a few items to identify and hopefully put on display in the shop. We'll see what comes of those." He turned a corner and saw the rope bridge that led back to Tomoika. He walked, absentmindedly turning his hands back and forth as Lilith slithered between his fingers, her muscular, smooth body, gliding between them smoothly. "Well, ready to go home, Lilith?" She flickered her tongue, which she always did regardless of what else was happening around her, which he took to mean 'yes.' He stepped into the teleportation pad. "Taft!"
