This quest takes place on Floor 10.

You must defeat “Smaug the Ruby Hatchling” before attempting this quest.

You’ve collected all 9 gems, it’s now time to explore the mysterious castle that appeared on floor 10, placing the 9 gems on the door in their correct places forces the gems to glow brightly and dim out afterwards causing the door to crumble to pieces opening the way to the castle. To your surprise, in the center of the first room is an egg, hatching from it seems like the first hatchling… but something's different from this, it looks like a dragon knight this time around? The dragon knight jumps down from its pedestal and reveals its jousting spear ready to face you. The next eight floors will be rematches with the old hatchlings in their dragon knight form, and on the last floor… the ultimate knight awaits.

Once all nine dragon knights are defeated, the last room will open, and at the end of the room lays a throne that sits Varalys the ultimate dragon knight, that will challenge you to a duel to the death and that he’ll show you the true power of dragons. Prepare yourself, the ultimate duel is about to commence.

<<Dragon’s Judgment>> On a roll of 9-10, a dragon symbol will appear on the character’s chest causing their character to freeze in place removing their evasion properties for one turn.

<<Dragon’s Ascent>> On a LD roll of 15+, this boss will heal 25 HP and raise its attack by 10.

<<Dragon’s Last Roar>> At the moment his HP reaches zero, he will shout in dragons tongue for the castle itself to crumble down with brimstone raining from the sky. The player has to roleplay them escaping the castle which will take 4 posts to do so, on each of those posts they must roll… on CD’s of 1 - 8 they will take 100 unmitigatable damage from the stones that crumble from the sky.

Once the player is outside, the castle will crumble down to the ground and from the skies you can hear “You’ve defeated us… however this is not the end, we will come back to challenge you once more… but for now, you have proven yourself worthy of my bounty…”

"Woah....alright, I'm interested..." Beat said as he and @Shield stood outside of the impressive courtyard to the castle where they would finally see the conclusion of the longest quest chain in the game. It had been quite a journey, though both he and Shield had felt that they were over leveled for the fights against the dragonlings, finding the mobs leading to them much more interesting. 

"So what? We fight the mother dragon inside?" He asked, pulling open his inventory and pulling out his newly converted Shi's Talon. He brandished the ornate, black metal spear as he moved the weapon around himself, practicing the katas the game had imbued into him with the five ranks of skill he had put into it. "I suppose we'll see if switching from Martial Arts was the right move. I haven't actually used this on anything, so I'm actually looking forward to our first fight more than usual."

Beat began to walk the wide path up to the castle, still twirling his new weapon in hisleft hand as he went through the sword art list on his menu with his left, making sure he had remembered them all correctly.

Shield followed, arms crossed over his chest. He was not upset at all, but he was alert. The fights leading up to this point so far had been almost too easy. He knew that they were over-leveled, but it still seemed as if the game was holding back. They made their way through the great courtyard to a pair of stone doors that towered over them. Stepping forward, Shield pressed against them. They did not budge. In the dead center, there was a stone sculpture of a dragon twining around the castle Aincrad. Along its spine were a number of empty recesses. He made a quick count. There were nine.

He opened his inventory, tapping through his options until, there in his open palm, nine gems materialized in a flash of pale blue light. One at a time, Shield set them into a recess. As the ninth was set, The stone dragon's eyes lit a fiery red, and the gems melded into the stone. With a boom, the doors stirred from their stationary position, swinging slowly outward. It took several paces to move beyond the radius of the slowly swinging doors. Once they were opened, Shield took one last look at Beat before stepping through the archway into the torch lit halls of the castle.

"Well, this is certainly a more elaborate greeting than we've received in previous portions of this quest," he said, his eyes darting from one side of the hallway to another. Their footsteps echoed down the smooth hall, the mirror-shine rich tile floor reflecting the bright green flames of the torches that lined the way on either side. "Be on your guard."

They neared the end of the hall where it opened up into a circular room lined by columns. An bas relief lined the top of the hall, decorated with sculptures of warriors and dragons locked in deadly combat. In each depiction, the dragons seemed to have the upper hand, the warriors cowering at their feet as claw and tooth flashed or fire scorched.

"Certainly sends a message, doesn't it?"

"It does, but unless this dragon is far stronger than it's children, I'm really not that worried. Like you said, I think we're a bit over-leveled for this quest line." Beat said confidently. He boastful statement was not entirely out of arrogance, however, since each dragonling had fallen with relative ease and it seemed like the mobs that spawned randomly had gotten more of them than the boss monsters had. The art on the walls continued to spell their doom as they walked down a hallway that ended in an Emerald Green door that appeared to be made of the precious stone itself rather than the wood or stone the rest of the castle was made from. 

"Don't tell me we have to fight them again..." He said incredulously as he pushed open the door and stared at the emerald egg sitting on a pedestal in the middle of a large room. He walked in a few steps but decided to heed Shield's words for the time being until he was sure of what to do. The moment both of them cleared the doorway, the door shut behind them as the egg in the middle of the room began to crack and shake. 

"Okay, I was actually kidding...I really don't want to fight them again..." He said as the egg finally hatched into, not a dragonling, but a tall, fully armored dragon knight. The creature's name tag read 'Rhaegal the Dragon Knight' and it glared at them as it brandished a vicious looking sword.

The creature snarled and began to speak in a low, rough growl, "You have made it this far and you can now see that striking me down in my infancy has only made me stronger! You have sealed your own fate by co-" the tip of Beat's spear ran through the dragon Knight's body four times before he leaped into the air and driving his spear downward, through the head and body of the dragon, shattering it into red pixels.

"I said I didn't want to fight them again. Don't care if they're dragon knights now, they still suck." Beat said with a shrug as he began to look around the room for a door.

As the dragon warrior dissipated into nothing, Shield took a moment to gather up energy to replenish what Beat spent. In the most direct sense, Beat was right. That match was too easy, and unless the difficulty were to ramp up significantly as the quest progressed, it seemed a simple, albeit potentially grindy victory. The ease of it unsettled Shield. At the moment, there was no reason to raise a fuss. He simply tossed the ball of energy to Beat.

The back of the chamber erupted with the sound of grinding stone on stone, and the middle section of the back wall slid slowly down and out of sight, leaving a long passageway stretching out before them. This hall was lined with glowing quartz crystals, similar to the emerald torches of the previous hall.

"I'm noticing a pattern here," he said, his eyes narrow. Slowly, he began to make his way towards it, wary of any changes in the scenery.

The passage ended much like the first, in a now quartz themed room with an egg on the center pedestal. Having an idea of at least what was to come from the egg, if not the room itself, Shield stepped through the door, his eyes alive and searching for potential threats.

"Kyaba gets points for style in his design choices. This is definitely to coolest part of the quest, I just hope we get a good fight at some point." Beat said, as they entered the room. Beat stared at the egg expectantly and was not disappointed as yet another Dragon Knight emerged from it, this one donned in pale pink quartz armor and wielding a sword made of similar material and color. 

Much like the first, the dragon knight began to speak as it hopped down, off of the pedestal, its voice female and somewhat clearer than her emerald brother's, "I am the second of my kin you have slain and I am the last reincarnation you will ev-" The dragon's speech was once again cut short as Beat crammed his spear through its head, destroying it outright, "NOPE!!" 

"Not even worth loot! Shield, I know you like to play it safe, but this is a bit much don't you think?" He said, looking expectantly at the far wall, waiting for the door to open.

Shield did not answer. He merely gave Beat a pointed look and tossed him another glowing parcel of energy which dispersed itself into Beat's body and absorbed into his skin. It was hard to argue with what they had seen, but he still did not like the idea of rushing forward. The path ahead opened, much in the manner that it had before. This time, the hallway was lit not by torches or crystals but by glowing spheres with rainbowed spectrums of radiance dancing along the walls.

"I think we found the opal hall," he said gruffly, rolling his shoulder and proceeding forward. He quickened his gait somewhat, but he still was not inclined to rush. At best, his speed could be described as 'a saunter.'

The chamber beyond was marked with an opalescent egg on a pedestal. Along the walls, the bas reliefs were becoming more intimidating, with dragons actually tearing apart the various warriors that faced them. Shield made a slight face, more out of disgust than actual intimidation.

"Lovely."

"Sheesh, no kidding. It was kinda cool before, but now it's just gross." Beat remarked as he attempted to scratch a dragon off of the wall, which seemed impervious to his attempts at graffiti. He turned his attention to the egg in the middle of the room, awaiting what was no longer a surprising event. Beat was beginning to become more annoyed with the monotony of the quest. What had promised to be an epic adventure through a castle was quickly becoming arduous. 

"Here we go again..." Beat said in an exasperated tone as the egg cracked and eventually hatched into the dragon knight they knew was coming. 

"We meet aga-" "NOOOOOOPE!" Beat shouted angrily as his spear reduced another Dragon Knight to a spray of red pixels. Beat rested his spear over his shoulder as he looked to Shield with an agonized expression, "Maaaaannnn...this could have been so cool! What a let down..."

Shield kept his mouth shut. The fact that the gauntlet was evenly paced at a quickly consumable difficulty did not set him at ease, but Beat was no longer listening to him. He was going to have to be careful for the both of them. In either case, Beat's energy still needed topping off, and he obliged, charging up his energize skill and tossing the gathered energy to his partner.

Get your head on straight, Beat. I don't know what your deal is, but we don't know what's up ahead.

He set off through the door as soon as the wall had lowered enough for him to do so. This hallway was not lit by brackets along the walls, but rather by hanging chandeliers, the arms of which were hung with glittering diamonds which cast dancing reflections onto the walls. The chamber at the far end was the same story, second - or rather fourth - verse. The carved images were becoming more grizzly with each passing chamber.

"Ah Diamond...of course..." Beat said more to himself than anyone else. He could tell Shield was disapproving of the cavalier manner that he was destroying the enemies. The first time he had done it, it had actually been just to shake up the pattern of Shield grabbing threat and Beat not actually being in any sort of mortal danger. The reason Beat seemed more daring than usual now was that since each Dragon knight seemed identical, Beat saw no reason to slow down when he was sure he could take at least one hit from whatever they faced. He seriously doubted whether or not the pattern would end until they ran into the boss of the castle. 

"Here we go" Beat said as he pushed open a solid diamond door and walking into a large room that was identical to the others. The only real difference was the gemstone that was used to decorate the room and the level of violence of the artwork on the walls. Beat leaped up onto the pedestal and watched as the egg began to crack, leaping into the air as the egg hatched and produced another Dragon Knight. He kicked off of the ceiling the ran his strongest spear sword art through the dragon knight before it could even speak, leaving the room still. 

"Anticlimactic, but until they can take a hit, I see no reason to be cautious."

Again, Shield held his tongue, sending Beat another bundle of energy as the door at the back of the chamber slid down and out of sight. He stepped through the door into a hallway lined on both sides by panes of lit yellow panels. The best that Shield could tell, the panels were thin translucent material that filtered the outside sunlight. Either way, it bathed the hall in a warm, yellow glow.

He strode down the center, at least moderately certain at this point that he would not be accosted, but still not in any rush. As the hallway ended, the next chamber opened up into an identical room to all those before it, save of course for the color scheme, and as usual, the sculptures that lined the upper reaches of the room. On the pedestal, a crystalline egg of pale, glittering yellow stood, no doubt containing yet another adversary.

[Beat 0]

As they entered the room, Beat took initiative and leaped up to the pedestal and kicked the egg off of its perch, sending it careening down to the ground as it hatched, the Dragon Knight emerging just before the egg crashed into the ground, landing face first onto the floor with a thunderous crash that echoed through the room. 

"WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!! HOW DARE YOU DESECRATE MY EGG!?" The knight shouted is a long, drawn out, snake-like voice. 

"Because," Beat started with a chuckle in his voice, leaping down from the pedestal and landing in front of his new adversary, "You ain't got that shine dawg." 

With that, he leaped backwards and initiated his sword art, stopping his backwards momentum with one foot and kicking himself forward, driving his spear cleanly through the enemy, defeating it just like the previous knights. 

"Alright, three more? Four?" He said as he made his way towards the room's exit.

"Okay, what does that even mean?" Shield finally blurted, beginning to actually lose patience with Beat's antics. They were quickly nearing the last of the knights, or at least those who corresponded to the ones that they had already vanquished. I Beat was going to start taking their quest seriously, now was the time to do it. "I mean, I get the general idea, and I even get that the fights so far haven't really been fights to begin with. I'm tracking with that. But isn't that reason to be suspicious on its own?"

He was already in the process of gathering more energy for Beat, but he wasn't going to hand it over without a few choice words accompanying it. "Nobody has been here before. Even the brokers know nothing about any of this. The fights have been suspiciously easy - even more so than when we fought the dragons the first time, in many cases. Not to mention-" he gestured behind them to the closed and sealed door "-we literally can't go back. This whole thing has 'trap' written all over it!"

With that, he tossed the glowing orb over to Beat.

Beat cackled as Shield questioned his insult to the dragon, not turning to look at the party's tank, "THAT'S what made you break your silent treatment?" he said, opening his menu and flipping through his inventory, smiling as the energy supplement Shield supplied him refilled a significant portion of his energy bar. The pair of them had truly built complementary to each other, Beat's damage, now more optimized than it had been before, mowing down enemies as Shield supplements his energy, maintaining the damage output as long as possible and thus requiring less rest in between encounters and expediting resource acquisition and progress towards freedom from the death game they had all been forced to play.

The former martial artist finally turned to look at his friend, "I know it's a trap, but at this floor level, I have a hard time believing anything in here is so dangerous we can't handle it, even if it hits me once." Beat said, taking a more serious tone to avoid further annoying Shield by making him think he wasn't taking his concern seriously, "Tell you what, if something comes out of an egg or shows up with a name that doesn't include the name of a weakling we've already beaten, I'll let you take lead, okay?"

He pushed the door open and stared up at the pedestal, this time waiting patiently, attempting to uphold his part of the bargain he had just struck. The egg revealed a jade Dragon Knight who failed to get more than three words out before being impaled by Beat's spear, the force cracking the pedestal behind his target.

Shield did not answer. He still felt the tone was more flippant than was warranted, even with the acknowledgement of the trap. Still, Beat was at least listening now, which was an improvement. He gave a slight incline of his head in acknowledgement and gathered up a handful of energy to toss to the other player.

The hallway beyond opened up, and Shield made his way down the passage towards the net room. This one was made from what appeared to be a red, polished sandstone that had been buffed to a mirror shine. The lighting was once again provided by torches, but the deep, ruddy red that they burned was easily  better match for the color pallet than any glowing crystals or outer lighting might have been.

Jasper next. We're coming up on the end and fast.

The door on the other side swung inward, and in they strode, staring down the smoothly polished red stone-colored egg that stood opposite them.

"Ahh Jasper, I like this one." Beat said, admiring the stones of Jasper that decorated the room and, particularly, the pedestal on which the glimmering, red egg shook and cracked. Beat stared as the dragon Knight emerged and leaped down off of its perch, taking a knee to absorb the impact before standing up straight and eyeing the two players with contempt. 

"You...you have slain me before...and now I have been given life once again to rectify your outrageous sin." The jasper dragon said in a deep, clear voice. Beat smiled as began to walk towards the knight, his spear glowing with the power that was his strongest sword art. 

"and I will slay you again. You can't match my abilities, it's just a fact." Beat said, as the dragon knight charged, emboldened by the player's challenge. As the dragon Knight brought its sword up, ready to strike, Beat's spear went straight through the blade, shattering it before pulling back and striking the owner of the inferior weapon several more times before the knight shattered. 

"Maybe twenty levels ago..."

Shield nodded, glad that Beat had taken his words to heart. He recognized that rushing the first few rooms got them where they now were much faster. However, he wondered whether Beat would have slowed down any without his prompting. He also wondered whether he would remain now at this slowed pace, or if he would get distracted by the thrill of the fight and take off again.

In either case, the door at the back of the room was already sliding down and out of the way. Shield tightened his fist and opened it into a flat palm over which hovered another ball of energy which he threw to beat. With his parcel delivered, he set off towards the next chamber. The hallway that led onward was lit with a brilliant blue hue that shone up through what must have been a translucent floor. The entire hallway was bathed in light which shone with a steady incandescence. It was impossible to say what the source was, but it certainly did not flicker like flame.

"Okay more then hopefully we get to see the big bad." Beat said in a rather bored tone. He was growing weary of killing essentially the same enemy with the same attack. The problem was that he could never be sure that a weaker sword art would be able to defeat them in a single blow as his Dimension Stampede could. Beat admired the beautiful hallway as they approached the door and he spoke out loud, but more to himself than Shield, "I think the names of the spear sword arts are cooler, which seems backwards considering how badass martial arts is." 

At this Beat, was making small talk to kill time, his boredom beginning to get the best of him. He pushed open the sapphire door and walked right to the pedestal and tapped the egg with his spear, speeding up the hatching process and grinning at the Dragon Knight who seemed to stunned by how close Beat was to say anything before the warrior struck, his spear cleaving the enemy in two.

"Easy, Beat," Shield said, a note of warning in his voice as the sapphire knight, or what was left of him, evaporated into thin air. "That was the penultimate of those that we've already beaten. There is potentially only one left before we get to the end of the gauntlet. Hell, this last one might even be the actual final boss for all we know."

He clenched his fist as he spoke, dividing his attention just long enough to finish up the act of replenishing his companion's lost energy. He wished that he could replace the spent energy faster. After all, Beat was well below half and he was well above half. In any case, there was little they could do aside from taking a rest, and that was likely not an option with Beat there. Even if he had no energy, Shield was fairly certain he's go in swinging with basic attacks.

The hallway before the ninth chamber was everything one might expect from a fire dragon's lair. Lava flows ran down the sides of the chamber and vanished into grates in the floor. The bubbling sounds of the flowing molten material created an ominous background noise for their approach.

Beat smiled at Shield's warning, sweat beginning to from on his forehead as the heat began to become uncomfortable, reminding him of the floor where they had encounter Smaug for the first time, "Remember the deal? I get to attack if he has the name Smaug or Dragon Knight." Beat sounded a little arrogant, but even when he wasn't trying to, he always did. It was the confidence in himself that rested just beneath the surface that bubbled out every time he spoke. Contrary to logic, the more dangerous the situation was, the more he wanted to test that confidence, as if to justify it somehow. 

"Here we go." He said as he pushed the magma infused door open, feeling the heat from the room pour into the hallway, a contrast which was surprising and uncomfortable. "Oh please be something I can attack, this heat is terrible." Unfortunately for the Dragon Knight, Beat got his wish and he pounced before the knight could get his bearings, the black metal spear shredding the digital warrior into pieces, Beat cheering in celebration, anxious to be out of the heat, "YES!"

"Alright, going forward, we're in unexplored territory, so I'll let you lead the way." He said, waiting for Shield to enter the next hallway before following behind.

Shield nodded and took the lead, walking through the doorway to the next hall. This one was different from those that had come before. Blue flames burned in what he assumed to be brackets along the walls, but it seemed to cast very little actual light, making whatever walls and brackets more or less invisible apart from the occasional highlighted edge. Shield could barely see his own hands before him. Their footsteps echoed down the halls, filling Shield's ears. However, at a certain point, the close echo of the walls fell away and became a distant echo. The blue lights stayed at the same distance, but these must have been on long torches extending from the floor rather than being anchored on any sort of wall.

All at once, the blue flames flared, casting light about the room to show a bleak, obsidian throne room. Tall, sharp architecture led up to a vaulted ceiling whose actual height was hidden in the darkness that extended beyond the torch light. A set of steps led up from the last set of torches, though rather than being completely straight, they angled in the center into an almost triangular sloping stair that jutted out in the center. At the top, on a great black throne, sat an armored figure with great metalic wings extending on either side of the throne. Around it, a health bar manifested, along with the name tag 'Valarys - The World's End.'

"Beat, I think we found the boss," Shield said, his jaw tight and his eyes plastered forward. He slowly drew out his sword from the back of his shield.

Valarys stood, towering above the players. As he did so, the wings moved with him, showing that he too was some sort of dragon hybrid like the dragon knights before him. He leaned on a long, menacing trident and stared down from the depths of his dark helmet. Shield decided it was best to start things off on his terms.

"Alright, you tin can of a-" he began, but before he had even finished putting words to his <Focused Howl>, Valarys moved. One moment, he was on the dais where sat the throne. Then he was half way down the steps, and before Shield had time to properly move out of the way of the strike, the trident had spanged off of his shield and narrowly missed his face. Shield flinched back. He had seen the movement, but only just barely, and there was no way that he could have avoided the attack by anything other than his own luck. This was a final boss if ever he had seen one. They needed to put him down quickly.

"Beat! Go!"
