Rewards:

  • The Materials Gathered

Summary:

Marking the beginning of each tier (Floors 1, 11, 21, etc.), these levels of Aincrad in particular each seem to have various locations among the floors that are bursting at the seams with crafting materials. They are easier to find than other hunting grounds on comparable floors, with short respawn rates to make them the best locations to hunt for materials.

If the floor is vegetated, players can find a <<Garden>>. If there are a lot of buildings on the floor, players can find a <<Courtyard>>. If the floor is underground, players can find a <<Cavern>>. Many NPCs give away these farming locations, telling players about this amazing opportunity of extra materials, whether it be from plentiful monster drops or from the safer areas outside of town that make for easy, peaceful fishing and gathering.

Requirements:

  • At least one [1] Page (20 or more posts)
  • Mobs MUST meet or exceed the loot minimum parameters
  • You get 1 bonus material for each roll in which you would gain a crafting material (from killing monsters, gathering, or fishing)
  • Fishing does NOT spawn mobs

Fishing: ID# 96820 results: Craft: 1 - Boss Monster - Ignored due to quest perameters

There was a whole new floor to explore now that Tesseleth had been defeated and the miners of floor 21 had been freed. However, popping the cork on the floor had seemed to serve as some sort of catalyst, triggering some major changes to the game as well as releasing a great deal of new quests that had previously been unknown. Whispers had been circulating on every tenth floor that new locations had opened up for item and material farming. Shield was not about to miss out, nor was he going to pass up the opportunity to test out his newly acquired Fishing skill. Ruby had shown him how profitable it could prove, and even on top of that, these special spots supposedly put one out of reach of interloping monsters, even those acquired through fishing.

Shield set himself on the edge of the the lake that NPC's had guided him to, pulling out his line and tackle and hooking the bait fish to cast. Though right away, it seemed that there was nothing really biting.

He tried casting off into the other side of the lake in the little cavern and immediately hooked a fish that, upon removing it from the hook, was actually found to have swallowed a completely different fish that had been on the line just before it. Shield shrugged to himself, figuring this was likely exactly what it was like for an area to be as resource-rich as the rumors had suggested.

He settled into a steady pattern of casting and dragging the line back in to shore in order to cast again, settling himself down into a comfortable seated position. Compared to his previous farming ventures up on the twenty first floor, this promised to be much more tame. After a little while, he repositioned himself so that his back was resting against the cavern wall, and as he cast and recast his line, he began to get lost in his own thoughts.

He found himself thinking about the dance, and immediately, his expression soured. Not only had the first half of the night been dedicated to Beat finding as many ways as possible to humiliate him, but they had fallen short of their objective to win the masks. It was not as though the items would have made or broken his build, but anything that afforded him more hit points meant a better health regeneration from Battle Healing. He was still one of the fastest healers on site, but extra bonuses without costing an inventor slot were never to be written off as useless.

He sighed, pulling in his line once again and throwing it back out into deeper water, though no more successful than the previous dozen times he had done so. Standing up, he dusted himself off and made part of a circuit around the lake, allowing himself to cast to other spots without tiring his arm.

He continued playing out the events of the ball in his head. There had been a dance, which he was none too pleased with, and then a series of uncomfortable goodbyes, which he had rushed simply to escape the failure of an evening out. The year before, although still an uncomfortable affair, there had at least been the encounter with Freylise at the end of it. While not exactly planned, it was Shield and Beat's first time facing off against any kind of boss raid, and it had set the bar for all of the raids to follow. Not only had Shield managed to escape the fight without so much as a scratch, but they had walked away with some extremely useful consumables.

The events of the fight replayed in his mind as he absentmindedly cast and recast, recalling how Jonathan had been forcibly kissed by the boss in order to recover some of her health only to have her immediately die from the following attack.

It was the way of combat in Aincrad. Landing last hit bonuses was nearly impossible to account for. He and Beat had done their best to conspire on nearly every boss raid they had entered. Since an offensive item would go to Beat and a defensive one would go to him, there was no reason not to do so. Still, despite being able to work together, other players had just proven too unpredictable in their attacks to account for in the final moments of the fights they had seen.

He was jerked back to reality by his pole practically jumping out of his hands. He caught it, reeling hard against whatever was on the line. He pulled in his quarry to find yet another fish on it, and upon removal, yet another inside of it. Shield wondered to himself how common finding such nesting-doll style catches while fishing, both inside and outside of the rich zone.

He did not have to wait long to find another clue regarding that mystery. No sooner had his line been cast over the water than a fish leaped up into the air from the surface and snatched up the hook in its mouth. From below it, another much larger fish splashed itself free of the surface and swallowed the first. It flapped proudly in the air, allowing gravity to pull it down towards its watery home. However, before it could land, another even larger fish poked its head up out of the water and gaped its mouth wide, catching the second fish and turning over in the water to begin swimming away. Shield began cranking on the reel, fighting the considerably larger creature back to the shore where he finally was able to collect it and add it in with the others he had found so far.

"I'm going to have to tell Beat about this," he thought aloud. "He'll get a kick out of it."

His thoughts strayed back to the events of the dance. While Beat had eventually gotten the message that he had gone too far, it was not a message that he received readily. It was a talk that he had not had with the younger player just yet, but he had a feeling that it might be a necessary one. While this time around, in the end, it had been no harm done, Beat did have a bad habit of getting caught up in things. For that matter, sometimes Shield wondered if he was just caught up in Sword Art Online in general. While he had experienced a number of satisfying moments of his own, there were more than a couple of occasions where Beat seemed to be enjoying himself - and entirely too much.

He reeled in another fish within a fish, now starting to postulate that it was not possible to simply catch a single fish in such a resource-rich environment.

In any case, he had known that his former rival was once a professional gamer. It made sense that he would find moments of triumph within the game satisfying. Still, there were times when Shield wondered if Beat would even want to leave if given the choice. In recent weeks, since he had returned from his disappearance, there had been hints of something sinister that had held him captive. It might serve as some sort of catalyst, allowing Beat to see that not everything within Sword Art Online was beautiful and that there was still a reason to fight to return to the real world.

Shield went to reel in his line, but as he did so, he could feel a fish fighting against him. He reeled harder, and for a moment he made progress, but then it became suddenly much harder to reel. He planted his feet and put his legs into it, but before he had even moved his line another five feet, it became yet harder to reel. He almost lost control of the line, but after a great deal of fighting, he managed to pull in three more fish.

He tried to pick up his train of thought once again, but as he retraced his thoughts back to the dance, he was jarred with another memory that he had not recalled since before the previous year's Valentine's Dance. It had been with great intention that he had avoided it before and during the dance this year, but he had not expected to spend so much time musing on the events after the fact, and the memory came flooding unwillingly into his mind's eye.

He watched himself in a mirror, though not the self in Sword Art Online, covered in customized equipment and surrounded by fantastical items and scenery. It was just a mirror back in the hotel where he and his ex wife had stayed the night before their wedding. She stood behind him, standing on a step stool as she watched her own hands in the mirror working meticulously to secure the tie around his neck.

Her hands had been so tender then. Although he had never been one to accept such gestures, with time and patience, she had worn him down. It had taken quite a bit of work to build the trust to allow her in as close as she was, close enough to let her hands touch not only his face and neck as she straightened his tie, but also his heart. He wished that those memories were not so potent or so vivid, because the events of the following years turned them as bitter as they had once been sweet.

Once again, his fishing line brought him back to reality, if Sword Art Online could be called that, and he found himself in yet another battle against the denizens of the lake. Like before there was one, and then later on a second, change in force on his line. He was amazed that the line could hold so much force, but there was no time to question it for now. It took him even longer this time than it had the first to land the fishes, of which there were again three.

He was careful as he settled back against the wall of the cavern not to let his memory stray into the distant past, keeping it on more current matters. In particular, the run-ins with Jonathan. It was clear that the other player was not himself. It could easily have been that Hikoru's decision to leave had affected him. After all, if Shield's memory served him correctly, the two of them had started the guild together. Still, he had a feeling that his own words regarding his interest in the Paladin position had been the biggest factor. Had he been wrong in hinting at his ambitions?

As he pondered that question, he felt another bite, though nowhere near as strong as the last. He reeled in the fishes with relative ease considering the effort he had needed before. Mulling his thoughts and the outcome of their limited exchanges, he was not sure how to feel.

Perhaps I could have been more tactful. A one-on-one conversation likely would have served the matter better. Still... is there a good way to tell someone you intend to take their job?

As he watched the bobber live up to its name in the middle of the lake, it suddenly vanished. He began to reel, but then the power on the line increased. He reeled harder, but again, something caught onto the line and dragged harder against it. He dug in once again and heaved, hauling the fish closer. Then, out of the water, there leaped a mighty fish, easily the size of Shield. It crashed down, open-mouthed onto the spot where his line vanished into the water, and all of his progress began to undo itself. It was everything he could do to fight against the pull. He held position, hauled back with the strength of his arms and legs, then quickly wound up the line as he leaned forward, taking up any slack before the fish could do so.

Inch by inch, he battled the fish all the way to the shore, where it finally rolled out of the water and flapped until Shield could manage to store it away.

Even just in fish alone, Shield had already amassed a fair amount of loot to take home. It wasn't particularly valuable, but it was at least useful. Through his shop and its connections, he was sure he could secure whatever components would be necessary to prepare for the upcoming boss. He closed out of his menu and cast his line back into the water, settling back down onto the stones.

After his thoughts had been interrupted, it took a while for him to pick those strands of thought back up. He had been thinking about Jonathan and the potential position to take over as Tank Paladin of the ascendants. He recognized the work and the love that Jonathan had put into the position, but there were definitely arguments to be made, not only for the ability to rotate power between members who showed the capacity, but also just for how far Shield had come since joining.

He had not been keeping a close eye on Jonathan's progress, but if he had not already caught up with him, Shield was at least close to it. His line came back empty, so he cast it out once again. He tried to put himself into Jonathan's position. He was young, and he had definitely made a name for himself, but despite his accolades, it doesn't feel good to be challenged, especially at a young age. Perhaps he just wasn't prepared to have someone gunning for his position, especially so soon after joining. It had only been about a year, after all.

"I tell you, Lilith," he sighed, keeping his eyes out on the lake in front of him. Its glass surface would have been the perfect mirror of the high ceiling above it had it not been for the commotion from Shield's fishing. "This whole game is a mess."

The small snake familiar poked her colorful, rugged head out from his sleeve, and he could see her head swivel so that her slit eyes could study him as he spoke. "It's not fair to ask these kids to be adults, but they have to daily take their lives into their own hands."

His fishing pole jumped slightly as something took his bait. It came easily at first, and at the end of the line, he could see a splashing something or other. However, as it drew nearer, all of that splashing drew the attention of another fish, and then another still, each one gobbling up the one before it until Shield was left throwing his body weight against the pole to reel it in.

Once the fish was safely in his inventory and its meals had been extricated from its stomach, Shield took his seat once again and began to cast, reeling in slowly each time.

There was not much for it except to talk to Jonathan, though he was not sure how well that discussion would go. The last time a conflict had arisen between ascendants, it was over the death of Beatbox, and on that occasion, Jonathan and Hikoru had been at each others' throats, and very quickly at that. Shield had stepped in then to intervene.

"Am I always a parent these days?" he asked aloud. Lilith, who was once again staring up at him from the cuff of his sleeve, gave him a slick of the tongue and an otherwise blank stare. "Oh, what do you know?" he grumbled. "I wonder if that's why I've been motivated to climb the ranks. Am I trying to the dad of father figure of the Ascendants?"

Before he had time to ponder the question, he was interrupted by another cascade of fish, the last of which was so strong that he was once again unable to reel without creating momentary slack for himself. He was becoming quite skilled at it, and by the end, he had four fresh new fish to add to those ha had gathered.

No sooner had he cast his line than there came another nibble. At first, he didn't think anything of it, but as he reeled, there was yet another bite, and very rapidly.

"Oh no..."

He braced his feet, but the next fish pulled so hard that he was lifted up onto them. Thinking quickly, he found a stalagmite by the water'e edge. As he was pulled towards it, he hopped to the side with as much control as he could, just managing to get to the far side of it and leaned out, using the structure as a makeshift pulley to take some of the force out of the fish's fight. It was fortunate, too, because just as he had managed to square up his feet, there came an even more powerful pull. Shield nearly lost his grip, having to turn backwards and brace the pole against his shoulder as he leaned with his whole body.

Little by little, he fought the beast back to the shore, only just managing to haul it from the water, storing it away, and collapsing into a heaving, panting mass on the shore.

He cast out his line, this time only into the shallows. His heart wasn't in it just yet, not even enough to stand up. He lay on his back, lazily reeling in and casting out, but only enough to meet the bare minimum of what one might call 'fishing.'

"It might be time for a break before long here," he thought aloud. Lilith, who was clearly not a fan of all of the jostling and flailing of the sleeve that she had been resting in, slithered out onto the ground and coiled by a dim, glowing crystal. She looked up at him again, maintaining her typical mild interest as Shield glanced around. "There's bound to be a chest somewhere around here if the drops are so plentiful. Maybe it's time to start looking for one."

He continued casting, though alternated one hand between doing so and also reeling, his other hand navigating his menus to make sure he had his best treasure hunting gear properly equipped.

Once his equipment was properly checked, he banished is menu, making a few more half-hearted casts before giving up on fishing for the mean time. He rested the pole against his shoulder and began making a slow, intentional circuit around the lake, weaving back and forth between the cavern wall and the stony shore. If he were to come near anything valuable, his earring would light up to warn him.

The going was slow. Although the place was lit from a number of sources, the glow was not even. There were a number of nooks and crannies hidden in shadows along the walls that he had to make sure to double check. As he made his way along the back of the cavern, he kept his hand up beside his head, watching for a sudden glow cast upon it to tell him that his earring had found something of value.

He drew level to a pile of rubble that was slumped against the wall, and immediately, his earring blazed to life, casting a steady golden glow on his hand. He lowered it, casting about for a potential spot that could conceal a chest, eventually settling on the pile of rubble itself. It looked as if a portion of the ceiling had collapsed, but it had heaped up high enough that there could easily be something hidden below.

Kneeling down, he began shoveling large quantities of loose stone and gravel away. It was slow going. The amount of rock was easily twice his size, but none of it was particularly heavy or hard to move. After a few minutes of digging, his hand shoveled down into the rubble and met with something solid. He scooped away what was in his hand and saw a dusty wooden plank with a hinge. It was a chest alright.
