History:
Born an only child in a middle class family, it took Tohru several years to develop and settle into his own personality. While some children were consistently shy and soft-spoken hiding behind their parents' knees, and others were loud and rambunctious and outgoing, Tohru seemed to shift between the two at irregular intervals. One day he would cause a fuss from getting into a fight with another kid in his elementary class, and the next week he could hardly be convinced to hold a conversation without sheepishly running away to his books.

His strange mood swings only seemed to settle down after he turned eight, when his parents divorced. A few days before his mother had sat him down to explain that Daddy would be going away to live in a different house, Tohru overheard both of them discussing the same topic. Specifically, he caught and subsequently latched onto their talks of their son, and what they would do with him. The whole thing was mutual, and any adult would have easily seen that his parents were being as responsible as they could be when making their decisions over custody and visiting times, not wanting their feelings and the different directions of their futures to hurt their child. But being the impressionable, and much less rationally-thinking kid that he was, Tohru internalized every word that his little ears picked up. He came to the rash and illogical conclusion that his parents were separating because of him. It was all his fault, and there was nothing he could do to fix their happy little family.

Tohru scaled back, settling into a more timid and nervous nature if for no other reason than a fear of alienating those around him with the more abrasive side of his personality. Over the years, as he gradually became more mature and rational, this fear lessened and he could easily be seen as the kind of introvert that grew more laid back and comfortable with someone only after he'd adjusted and gotten to know them. In high school, Tohru picked up art as a hobby, quickly finding that it came more naturally to him than others and taking a strong and immediate interest in the medium. He dabbled between different styles, from painting to sculpting, until he soon settled back into illustration. He began writing his own comics in his free time and during art club, getting plenty of practice in even as he sometimes doodled on his notes in class. Eventually, with a newfound passion for storytelling, Tohru set his sights on becoming a manga author and poured himself into his work with the dream of turning a hobby into a full-fledged career.

As he soon found out, the path he had chosen was anything but an easy one. A year out of high school, and Tohru continued living with his mother while he sought work with small-time publishing companies in the hopes that someone would give him and his stories a chance. Rejection after rejection, he pressed on and kept telling himself that he would get a break if he just kept improving, and that would be all he needed to get himself off the ground. He started looking for other outlets that might serve to inspire him, and video games were a quick and easy choice to look into. Virtual reality had been around for a while, but the hype surrounding Sword Art Online was simply too tempting to ignore.

Traits:

  • Morning Person
  • Artistic
  • Introvert

Virtues:

  • Dreamer: While some could easily argue that Tohru lives his life with his head in the clouds, he thinks of himself more as an optimistic opportunist. His initial shy and withdrawn nature typically hold him back from acting on such tendencies, but he is clearly well-driven by his own goals and desires. He sees the world--and the virtual castle Aincrad even moreso--as a canvas that can be marked and shaped into anything by the actions of others, and so he prefers to think about what's 'good' for himself and others as he comes to different decisions and crossroads. Based on his upbringing, Tohru likes to think he knows right from wrong and tries to keep the former in mind when interacting with the world around him.

  • Perfectionist: Having grown to take much pride in his work, Tohru strives for better and better results, leaving him unsatisfied if he presents a finished product in which he didn't give it his all. This trait naturally started and, for a while, only pertained to his manga works, but gradually bled over into other aspects of his life over time. Perhaps even fueling his self-consciousness, Tohru is more likely to feel ashamed if his efforts in something feel sub-par, but on the same token his confidence doesn't spike much higher than when he receives praise or recognition for a job well done. Luckily, the things he does persevere toward typically yield better-than-average results.

  • Empathetic: As a nervous, timid, and introverted person, Tohru easily grew to become empathetic to those who share a similar mindset and personality traits. He's fairly practiced at recognizing when a person has similar tendencies as his own, and knowing how to tread carefully so as not to scare them off. While he may not be the best with words and rarely has the life experience to meaningfully put himself in someone else's shoes, he hates to see someone in pain, and the do-gooder inside of him won't let him turn his back on a person in need.

Flaws:

  • Childish: Pairing maybe a little too well with his naivete, Tohru always maintained a bit of a childish side. He's a picky eater, his decisions and actions are largely influenced by his emotions, and he absolutely hates being told 'no'. Not-so-ironically, he also hates being called out on this behavior and being belittled or looked down on because of his age or lack of experience. Because he puts so much emphasis on putting his best self forward, he's grown naturally careful not to put himself in those kinds of situations, but as life in Aincrad may serve to push the young man to his limits, he may find himself buckling under the pressure more quickly than he would expect.

  • Naive: Inexperienced in many walks of life, Tohru has often been teased by friends and family alike when it comes to his 'innocent' nature. He's managed to develop a healthy sense of skepticism, keeping him from being the most gullible person he knows, but that doesn't stop the embarrassment when his best friend would take an easy jab at his barren love life. While dating experience may thankfully not be crucial in Sword Art Online, Tohru is just as green when it comes to fighting, strategy, terminology, and most concepts that avid MMO players know as second nature.

  • Self-conscious: Tohru puts way more stock into what others think of him than he should, and he reads heavily into how people perceive him. His borderline obsession with obtaining the approval of others has developed slowly and subconsciously over time, leaving him to hardly realize it as a trait of his. Even so, he sees an importance in first impressions, and always pays more attention to how he acts and speaks when in the presence of others. The less he knows a person, the more he will try to impress or tread carefully around them, however slightly. It isn't until Tohru has gotten close enough to a particular person that he will slowly and gradually drop the need for formalities and slip into his more casual, laid-back demeanor. Although, depending on the situation, he has been known to 'slip' and present those behaviors sooner than intended.
