Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Pinball stumbled upon the very same Cavern he had not too long ago. It was the same one that he had visited with Shield, judging from the various small, cool pools of water scattered across the smooth stone ground. Pinball took a deep breath. This was something he needed to do. He... he wanted a house. Somewhere he could safely - secretly - rest his head at night. Pinball wasn't terribly opposed to sleeping out in the open, he had done it before, but there were just some things you missed. A bed, a kitchen, a couch, were all some of those things. He was growing tired of fluffy grass and campfires, late nights staring at the stars. He wanted the comfort of a bed and pillow, and the security that came with staring at a roof. That came with a locked door. It was tough knowing that at any moment, especially given Pinball's severe lack of sleep, he could wake up in shackles. Pinball leveled his spear, and spotted a convenient cluster of monsters in the distance. He nodded. "Alright." Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #2 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Pinball ran towards the group of monsters, almost laughing when he saw what type of creatures they were. They were large, weirdly colored frogs; purples, neon greens, blues, and bright reds. But the weirdest part was the little lantern attached to their head: an almost circular sac attatched to some kind of appendage that hung in front of their faces, glowing brightly. Glow Frogs, he saw the names, before immediately crashing into them. His spear flashed out left and right, cutting through the tiny monsters mercilessly. He hit each and every one, and when the Sword Art's light faded away and Pinball slowed to a stop, his Energy stores dropping, he stood in the midst of four stunned, immobile frogs. He took a step back, admiring the damage he dealt, before grimacing. "Dumbass," he grumbled, shaking his head. He had let himself enjoy it again... he grit his teeth, before leveling his spear, readying himself for another attack. He took a breath. Calm down. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Pinball had spent too much time berating himself, and the Glow Frogs' stuns wore off. He shook himself out of it. There would be time for that later. These things were stupid looking, sure, but if they were hostile towards Pinball then they were also dangerous. He couldn't afford to let his guard down. He took his spear, gripping the shaft of the weapon until his knuckles turned white, and then threw himself forward again. This time, though, the Glow Frogs were moving. They all jumped on him, long, multicolored tongues lashing out at him with a vengeance. He threw himself recklessly into Weeping Moon again, his staff lashing out to hit three of them in turn, though one of the frogs managed to slip past his stance and land a score on his thigh. Pinball threw himself backwards and away from the fight, watching his health drop. Damn, that's... more than I thought. He glared ahead, staring at the group of them. He felt the adrenaline start to pump through his system. Focus. Concentrate. ~~ Combat ~~ Action Taken: Sword Art - [Weeping Moon] [-12 EN / +1 EN] Glow Frog 1: ID#110247 BD: 8+5= 13 (Hit!) Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) While Pinball had taken a hit, the Glow Frogs' healthbars were all exponentially lower than his. Pinball could take a hit from every single one of them and still live. Three out of four of them were on their last legs. In just three quick exchanges, it was clear who the victor of this fight would be. Pinball readied himself, planting his boots firmly against the stone, kicking up a puff of dirt as he shifted his weight. He watched the frogs hop forward as a group. It almost seemed like they were taking turns, the way they approached. One hopped, then the other, immediately followed by the other two... and there was hatred in those stupid little faces, Pinball knew. He took a risk and rushed forward to meet them, hopping into Weeping Moon. He hit three of them again, one killed, two killed, three killed, four... spared? He must have misjudged the distance, or else the Glow Frog was especially quick. Because when he reeled back to appreciate the carnage, there was one of the dumb looking frogs. "Alright," he mumbled, staring at the last remaining monster. ~~ Combat ~~ Action Taken: Sword Art - [Weeping Moon] [-14 EN / +1 EN] Glow Frog 1: ID#110251 BD: 8+5= 13 (Hit!) Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Just then, a bright white rewards screen popped up to the side of Pinball's face. And that was when the final remaining Glow Frog hopped forward, lashing out with its tongue. Pinball just barely had time to stumbled backwards, narrowly avoiding the surprise attack. The rewards screen faded from his view, but from the brief moment he had gotten to see the numbers, they were some pretty juicy drops. He was making good money already? He didn't even care that he didn't get a change to counterattack as the Glow Frog hopped... backwards and out of range, somehow. It was a stupid sight to see, befitting the stupid looking monsters. Pinball would have laughed, if he wasn't fighting his own bad memories as he held the two-handed weapon tightly in his hands. This isn't Cold Fervor, he reminded himself, and this isn't that mountaintop. These things aren't people. Just walking money. Programs. Calm down. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Pinball threw himself forward, once more into the fray. He activated the Sword Art, and found himself spinning into a sideways slash. It smacked the Glow Frog across its flank, but Pinball wasn't done. Once more, twice, Pinball hit each of its sides in rapid succession, while its health bar dropped with each successful connect. Then, for the coup de grace, Pinball brought his spear back, and, like he was playing pool, drove the blunt end of his spear into the Glow Frog's face. Almost like a cartoon its head gave way, squishing inwards and into the rest of its round body before shattering in an almost dazzling cloud of transluscent, polygonal blue shards. Pinball took a single step backward, and let out a short sigh as the reward screen popped into existance in front of him. He whistled. Nowhere near as much money as he figured Battleaxe users would make - at least, not when you took into consideration the strength of their AoE, but it was still a healthy portion of money. In fact, "That's more money I've made in one wave of combat in a very long time." ~~ Combat ~~ Action Taken: Sword Art - [Vent Forth] [-8 EN /+1 EN] Glow Frog 2: ID#110261 BD: 7+5= 12 (Hit!) Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) The second group of frogs found him before he saw them coming. Reflexively he leaned back, smoothly dodging the lashing of one of the Glow Frogs' tongues. He jumped to the side then, realizing that three more were enroaching on his position. Pinball gave his spear a quick twirl, caught it in his grip suddenly, and without missing a beat, threw himself into Weeping Moon once more. Pinball's staff lashed out, hitting each and every one of the Glow Frogs in rapid succession. As the power of the Sword Art, leaving Pinball momentarily frozen in place, he glanced to a fourth frog that was definitely out of range of his Sword Art - and its full, green healthbar confirmed his suspicions. "Damn it," he grumbled, pushing himself back and away from the group again. He didn't hop, but instead walked, edging closer to the first monster and slowly leading the rest of them towards it too. He needed to be hitting them all at once if he wanted to streamline the process. ~~ Combat ~~ Action Taken: Sword Art - [Weeping Moon] [-12 EN / +1 EN] / Charge! +5 DMG and Bull Rush! Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) The next exchange, while he hit the one he had first missed, he ended up missing a different frog, and he got hit not once, but twice. Pinball had thrown himself into another reckless attack, swatting Glow Frogs left and right as if he had some kind of vendetta. Their health bars dropped, left and right, like the flies they - probably? - ate. But he felt a brief thud as one of their heavy tongues smacked the back of his leg, forcing him to take a knee. Seeing the opening, the Glow Frog he had missed threw itself at him, twisted backwards mid-jump, and kicked him in the chest with its two long and beefy legs. Pinball was knocked to the floor, and he could hear the group of them ribbiting. Mocking him. Pinball cursed, and deftly jumped to his feet, taking an immediate two steps back. He held his spear off in one hand, waiting for them to approach again. He couldn't afford to take another hit. Not like that. Not without armor. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) For a second, it seemed like neither party moved a muscle. Pinball glared at the frogs, and their dumb little faces stared back stupidly, the bright lights radiating from the bulbs hanging from their heads bathing the cavern in a neon splash of color. Then they attacked, and Pinball wasted no time in making his own. He was running low on energy, but if he wanted to win, he had to use this same Sword Art as many times as he could. For victory! For money he needed to buy pillow! Pinball let the Sword Art carry him through the motions, cursing loudly when he missed one of the Glow Frogs again. Pinball dodged every one of their attacks, though - or else they were dead and couldn't make an attack in the first place. Now there were two left. The two that he had missed previously. Glancing at their healthbars, he found that one was on its last legs while the other was still in pretty damn good shape. He didn't think this fight was going to be over as quickly as the last. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #10 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) There were only two of them left. The fight was practically won, but his Energy told another story. This would either be done quickly, or would drag on for an uncomfortable amount of time; a few seconds, really, but for some reason it always seemed to feel longer in a fight. Pinball readied his next sword art, making extra sure that he wouldn't get unexpectedly jumped by one of the Glow Frogs. Pinball, when seeing his opening, took it, attacked. This Sword Art was over quicker than the last, and was only comprised of two quick, consecutive spear jabs. The staff his the flank of each in quick succession, the Glow Frog that was close to death promptly meeting its end. Pinball took a step back from the remaining frog, though not far enough to get a running start. He was going to end this in his next strike - he just had to take advantage of its next attack first. Pinball glanced at the reward screen that popped up next to him, grinning. He was making good money by doing this, even if his health wasn't in the best place right now. His health? Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #11 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) Okay, well, it looked like this was going to be a fight that dragged out. Pinball's health and energy in particular were looking pretty rough. And, if the drop in damage was anywhere near what he expected, he wasn't going to be killing it in his next hit. He might deal enough to drop it to half of what it has at best, which still wasn't favorable, to be honest. Still, he'd take what he'd get, and when the Glow Frog made no move to attack or shift its position, Pinball took advantage of its slothful thinking power and attacked. Dancing Spear was a Sword Art he hadn't used in a long time, but it was going to get the job done. Pinball finished his Sword Art with a smack against its side that sent it skidding across the cold, stone cavern floor. Pinball pursued it, his boots hitting the ground lightly with a slight echo that bounced around the cavern walls. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #12 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) As he ran, he saw the Glow Frog shift. To stare at Pinball and his rapid approach. And for a moment, it was sitting perfectly still - and in the next, it had launched itself forward. Pinball knew this attack; it was probably going to flip around and kick him with its legs. He couldn't let that happen with his health in the state it was, so Pinball did the only thing he could: he hit the floor. Pinball dropped, rolling on the ground several feet forward until finally slowing to a stop. The Glow Frog, with nothing to bounce off of, flew through the air until it landed with a smack against the stone floor, glancing back over at the now prone Pinball. Without wasting any time, Pinball pushed himself back to his feet. Jesus Christ, that was close, he breathed, leveling his spear for a final, reckless charge. Those always seemed to hit. Pinball 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted December 9, 2018 (edited) A couple of thoughts ran through his head at that moment, but Pinball couldn't remember any of them. For the most part, he was just relieved he wouldn't be getting killed by a frog. He took his spear, giving the weapon another twirl before sauntering over to the Glow Frog. "Hey, buddy," he said, "that was fun." It hadn't been And Pinball brought his staff back down into another Sword Art, beating the poor little frog maybe a little harder than necessary. The Glow Frog, its health finally dropping to zero, burst into the cloud of pixels Pinball had been waiting for it to. With that whole wave of monsters over and done with, Pinball sighed, finally relaxing. He glanced at his battered health bar and completely depleted Energy. He trudged to this giant boulder that was not too far away from him and sat down, leaning against it. Pinball started to count up his rewards. "God, I hate frogs," he said to himself. Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #14 Share Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) Battered and beaten, Pinball scrolled through his inventory. He had a few health potions attached to his belt, the cylindrical vials slid and wrapped tightly into slots in the leather, but he wasn't too happy about drinking them just yet. What if he needed them later? What if he - a wanted man - was cornered and needed to quickly down a vial in order to survive? It wasn't like he had a way to get any more, now that he was - and it hurt him to even mention it to himself - a murderer. He couldn't waltz into player shops like he used to, and he didn't have any kind of connections or a proxy. And then he remembered he did have a connection: one, to be exact. His black-haired, temperamental rival. He could always make him some more, even if Pinball hated asking. But to be honest, it wasn't like Mars to let him slide when it came to that stuff. He'd have to pay, and it would hurt his wallet bad. Still, Pinball mused, uncorking one of his potions, it's a small price to pay for, you know, not dying. Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #15 Share Posted December 12, 2018 Pinball eyed his healthbar as it jumped back up, safely into the green. It was just barely over the half-way mark, but it would do. It slowly inched forward another bit, but not nearly by much as the health potion had recovered. Not even a fraction of it, to be honest. Well, that's probably wrong, but- Pinball had never been one for numbers. His strengths had always been in the arts. In drawing and music, in poetry and writing - but he usually tried not to express himself as force of habit, and as a result what once were his talents had gotten rusty, and couldn't really be considered talents if he were to try and show them to the world now. He still drawed on occasion now, but those pictures were tucked away safely in his journal, and then in his inventory. Nobody would ever see them. Horrible, horrible drawings. Pinall shuddered at the thought. OOC Regen: +20 HP // +2/3 EN HP: 518/960 -> 538/960 HP
Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #16 Share Posted December 12, 2018 As Pinball's health slowly, slowly, slowly crept forward, he stood, using his bo staff to help push himself to his feet. It was a weird feeling. The Cavern was cold, but Pinball's avatar was warm. It reminded him of the air around him whenever he used his weapon. This strange, cold and hot sensation was unpleasant but strangely comforting. Pinball eyed another group of what he now called the little devil frogs hopping around not too far away from him. He had only killed eight of the monsters, but they were already respawning in bigger and bigger clusters - more than Pinball figured he'd be able to take on himself, if he was being completely honest. Judging by his healthbar and his now worryingly low supply of potions, he figured that if things went south here, these would be his last few fights in this Cavern. Pinball leveled his staff, and prepared himself to charge. OOC Regen: +20 HP // +3/3 EN HP: 518/960 -> 538/960 HP
Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #17 Share Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) As Pinball charged towards the group of passive aggressive Glow Frogs, he couldn't help but feel a bit satisfied. He cracked a smile, even if it was a bit of a small one. From the angle he was attacking and the way the Glow Frogs were positioned in a cluster like that, Weeping Moon was practically guaranteed to hit. He had gone through the motions of using that Sword Art so often that he felt like he knew the movements down to even the smallest of shifts and tiwrls. Sure, sometimes, a Sword Art was accented with the user's own twist to it, but for the most part they were always the same cookie cutter move. So that satisfaction was enjoyed, but only briefly as all of his strikes landed true, leaving Pinball to stand in the middle of a group of immobile Glow Frogs. Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #18 Share Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) The Glow Frogs recovered from their stuns faster than Pinball could ready himself for another Sword Art. They hopped into motion, slowly but surely making their way towards him with each consecutive jump. In light of this, Pinball took up a defensive stance, planting his boots firmly against the ground. One jumped for his face, twisting in midair to presumably try and kick him, and Pinball immediately reacted. He swatted it to the side with a quick flick of his staff, and then linked that retaliation into a Sword Art. Weeping Moon tore through the Glow Frogs with a vengeance, a blunt force to be reckoned with. Needless to say, none of them got any closer to him than the first frog, and Pinball stood unharmed. Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #19 Share Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) Their health wasn't looking so great now, and Pinball had thus far managed to escape being hit by any and all of the attacks they had made so far. He took a second, his gaze jumping from stupid Glow Frog face to stupid face. His victory was pretty much ensured at this point. All it would take was on last love tap on their - snout? Mouths? Pinball just settled on "faces" and called it a day. He gave his staff a final twirl, and launched himself into a conclusive Weeping Moon, letting the Sword Art pull his body through the motions. One, two, three, his bo staff struck the Glow Frogs, killing them instantly - but the fourth. The fourth and last standing, that bastard, had, by some stroke of luck, managed to escape him. Pinball slid to a stop in a cloud of pixels, glaring straight ahead at the Glow Frog that had just managed to deny death. Pinball 1 Posted December 12, 2018 Author #20 Share Posted December 12, 2018 (edited) This absolute unit had managed to evade Pinball's final killing blow. He figured he'd have some fun with it. He took a few cautious step backwards, making sure he was a good distance away from the thing - he didn't really want to get kicked in the face again. Then, he looked all around him, making sure there were no players around him. And then he smiled, pointing his staff at the dumb little frog. Projecting his voice so that it took on a loud, dramatic tone, he shouted, "Holla, cousin. Thee w're a fine opponent, frog. But anon t'is mine own duty to killeth thee." And with that, Pinball rushed forward, bringing his spear down hard into the Glow Frog's face. The blunt weapon almost sank forward a bit, the mob's avatar giving way before shattering into pieces. Pinball took a step backward, sighed, and shook his head. "I think I'm done," he mumbled, and turned around to make his way out of the Cavern.
