history

Spoiler

Stephen Star.

Rich. Popular. World-renowned, even.

With these things came expectations. He existed in a spotlight, like caged zoo animal, except with a car and larger pay cheques. From a young age, Stephen acted in films, television, and plays. Broadway was his favorite. He loved to sing, and rarely got to do it on a stage. The few chances he did get were among his fondest memories. His fame grew, not only because he was a legacy child, but because he starred in a number of high-grossing movies.

He vividly recalled a morning where, at the age of 12, he was awoken by a horde of camera-wielding men outside of his parents house. His parents, on his behalf, had accepted a lead role in a film that was long-awaited and had a substantial fanbase. Fans liked photos, and that's what they would get. Photos of him, peeking out the window, wondering what in the world was going on.

It was boring, but the people ate it up. Security helped dissuade the commonality of it, but paparazzi existed throughout all of his waking days. He grew very fond of hats, and of sunglasses; he wasn't quite at the point where he felt the need to wear wigs, but a few more years and perhaps that would have changed.

He did not despise his popularity. It opened doors for him that most only dreamed of. Sometimes, however, he wished that he could have regular life experiences. Friends—in the truest sense of the word—were hard to come by. Always, it felt like as though people had ulterior motives.

Over the years, he met and established relationships with many people. He considered few of them to be friends, but was otherwise cordial.

Stephen was never a gamer. In fact, he had never touched an MMO before Sword Art Online. Of course, this meant that adjusting was rather difficult for him in his early days. The games he grew up with were strategic, and usually required a board or playing cards. He liked puzzles, and things that required him to think and explore ideas. These types of games generally did not involve life or death situations, nor menus.

Within his first month, he met Alexa Beauregard (known in game as Lexa), and she showed taught him the fundamentals. Quickly, they fell in love, and after two years together, decided it was time to buy a house together. In the background, he schemed; he planned on proposing to Alexa after they purchased their house.

Both buying property and hosting a wedding cost a significant amount of col, which neither of them had. Even combined, they struggled to reach the amount they required.

Alexa suggested they challenge a dungeon, and Morningstar agreed.

Not a day goes by without him wishing he had declined, for it cost him his whole world.

Deep in the mountains of Floor Seven, in a dungeon that was meant to be of low tier, they fought waves of Frost-Lizardmen. Eventually, they found themselves overwhelmed.

Spoiler

There was something that dwelled in the darkest parts of the cavern. Something that terrified Stephen. He knew because moments after stepping onto the ice, the beast's bellowing call echoed through the air, vibrating the walls and paralyzing him and Alexa. They stared at each other, eyes wide. Thumps and scurries grew louder and louder as seconds passed. What happened? Had he activated something by accident? He looked in the direction of the sound and saw something large and ice-blue stomping swiftly through the cave.

"Run!" Stephen cried.

He moved first, pulling Alexa from her fearful trance. They sprinted back through the tunnel they had come from, dodging stalactites as they passed. A low-hanging rock scraped Stephen's shoulder, causing him to wince. He didn't stop, though; he knew the creatures were right behind them. Every little while, he looked behind him to make sure Alexa was okay. She kept close but the expression she made was heartbreaking. They couldn't outrun them. He clutched his sword, contemplating his next decision carefully. He nearly spun around when Alexa's voice reverberated through him.

"Don't!" She shouted. "Don't you dare turn around!"

Stephen gritted his teeth. "Damn it! They're too fast!"

He met Alexa's eyes for a short moment as he spun his head around. Only one of the creatures could fit through at once. If he could hold back one, then he could hold back them all. His amber eyes darted from her face to her waist. Why was she drawing her rapier? What was she doing?

She stopped suddenly and, with a pink glow, thrust her blade into the beast a dozen times. He slowed down.

"Come on!" Stephen called out, hurrying her to join him.

The beast was stunned; she'd bought them enough time to get out unscathed. The exit was so close now. Alexa nodded, beginning to run once again. He didn't speed up right away. Instead, he waited for her to catch up.

His heart sunk as he noticed the two lizard monsters upside down, crawling on the roof. They were smaller than the one that Alexa had stunned. They could fit right over the top of it.

Fuck.

One of them leaped from the ceiling, the beast's claws sinking into the woman's back. She hit the ground with a devastating thud and her rapier flew out of reach. Stephen reached out to her but he was too far away.

Why?

The beast slashed at her, dropping her health bar further.

Why was this happening?

It's jaw descended into her shoulder. He bolted but before he could reach her, the bar fell to zero.

"Stop!" Stephen screamed, a golden arc slicing through the two smaller beasts. The lizards shattered into blue shards and disappeared. He knelt down next to Alexa, looking for a health potion. He scrolled through his inventory, breathing heavily in his panicked state.

"I'm sorry. I know I told you not to do it," Alexa smiled faintly, her fingers grazing his cheek.

Then, she was gone.

In a cave, somewhere on Floor Seven, Stephen lost his light. He blamed himself for Alexa's death. Who wouldn't? His eyes dimmed, and his once beautiful smile could only be described as sad, or hollow.

Stephen Star.

Rich. Popular. World-renowned. And he would have traded it all in a heartbeat for his first love.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The passage of time was merely a band-aid over his uncurable wound. He sought avoidance rather than to sit in sorrow. Eventually, he found his way to the frontlines. In his free time, he continued exploring Aincrad's nooks and crannies—something that he and Alexa had discovered was a passion of theirs. He met powerful players, and grew his own strength and experience at the same time. He played his role well: a capable swordsman willing to do whatever it took to clear the game.

But he was an actor. Behind the facade, he was running.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Years have flown by, and Stephen Star has fought, and grown, and learned. He faced himself in the Gemini, and learned forgiveness. He discovered his strength against the Forgotten Time King. Halador of the Mountains taught him respect and equality, and his friends taught him trust.

His role in the defeat of Wushen, the Twenty-Seventh Floor Boss, prompted an invitation to a private summit between three guilds. The messenger of one guild, Willow, took a liking to him. Slowly, and with plenty of discomfort, Stephen opened up to her, and an unexpected relationship bloomed.

Today, Stephen and Willow live together. He did what he and Alexa always dreamed of and formed a guild, and he chases rumors day and night.

Things are looking up.

Spoiler

HUMBLE
Considering his upbringing, it wouldn't be a surprise to hear that Stephen has an astronomically large ego. He was born a rich kid—he went to a fancy school, he dressed expensively, and opportunities seemed to magically fly his way. It should have been impossible for him not to be conceited. But he wasn't. His humility was a gift that came from his time spent alone in thought as well as the lack of pride he had for his achievements as an actor.

ANALYTIC
Games were a norm in Stephen's life. Strategy games, puzzles games—anything that challenged his critical-thinking and deduction skills. This, alongside burying his head in books, helped him become more analytical in stressful, high-pressure environments.

CONFIDENT
Confidence was a must-have for Stephen, being an actor. He lives his life according to his own rules and values, rarely stopping to care about any opinions about him, negative and positive. His confidence may come off as arrogance, but he doesn't mind.

RECKLESS
Morningstar is prone to danger. While a certain amount of risk is assumed in a world such as Aincrad, he tends to pick fights where he is the underdog. His duels with The Forgotten Time King and Halador of the Mountains are prime examples of this.

BUSY
Morningstar's primary coping mechanism is filling his schedule to the brim. The easiest way to tell if he is troubled is to check his calendar. If he's double booked quests, something is probably wrong.

SPLIT
Morningstar and Stephen Star are two halves of a greater whole. He is split between his old life as an actor, and his new life as a swordsman. He worries about what his post-Aincrad future will look like, and that he will never be able to entirely return to what was.
