Ahh, the twenty-second floor. What a marvelous view. When Lessa had said she enjoyed the ambiance, Bahr had underestimated what she had meant. Rolling hills, beautiful lakes, countless trees and other flora, and an abundance of negatively charged ions. What were the ions for? What, haven't you ever sat next to a waterfall? Tons of negatively charged ions there. You'll notice that you feel really good in places like this.

As for why Bahr was there... Well, he didn't really know. It wasn't like Lessa had shown him around to her house or anything. He had just never been before, and figured it might be a good opportunity to look around and familiarize himself with the area should she ever decide to do so. He'd probably look really stupid gawking around the area if he wasn't prepared when the time came.

Yeah, if a time like that ever came. Wishful thinking on Bahr's part.

Wasn't long before Bahr came upon a particularly beautiful body of water. According to the map, this was the "Lake of Reflections." Not exactly an imaginative name, considering the whole thing literally looked like a mirror. But thinking like that was cynical. There was beauty to behold here, and Bahr would miss it if he moped around making fun of the developers. He made his way down onto one of the docks, where an old fisherman was lazing about with his line cast into the water. Trying to fish up dinner, no doubt. How quaint.

"Any luck?" Bahr mused, coming to a stop beside the fisherman.

"A bit," the old man said with a grin. "How about you? Come out here often?"

"First time,"
Bahr admitted. "I had just heard this floor was a nice place, and felt like checking it out."

"Well, if you're looking for serenity, you've found it," the old man said with a chuckle.

"It's not all gumdrop buttons and roses here, though. At the bottom of this lake rests a diabolical creature that would make the hairs on the back of you neck stand at attention," the man said, voice suddenly shifting to a slightly more serious tone. And just like that, Bahr was all ears.

"You don't say?" he prodded, hoping the man would give him a bit more info.

"Yup. Been trying to bring it to shore for months. Seems like I don't have the strength parameters to do it, though." Strength parameters? Bahr could solve that.

"I think we can help each other out. Pretty much all I've got to offer in this world is muscle. If there's a monster on this floor like that, I've got to see it. Maybe I could reel it in for you," he replied, enthusiasm picking up in his voice a bit.

"Well... I suppose we could at least try it," the fisherman relented, casting a wry glance toward Bahr. "Hope you're ready for an ass kickin', though. This fish doesn't [censored] around."

"You're going to need to fetch a Red Salamander for me," the man began, "They can be found at the base of the mountain over yonder. They aren't exactly easy critters to get your hands on, but they're the only thing that will land a bite from the fish you're after. Bring one back, then we'll talk."

And so, without another word, Bahr was off. It wasn't a quick journey to the mountain, but he wasn't complaining. Beautiful scenery, warm sun, and a cool breeze. The only thing the day was missing was the company of a beautiful woman. But who would he have even brought along, if that were the case. He knew the answer, but he wouldn't allow himself to admit it. Some feelings were best left buried.

Smooth terrain. Bahr didn't find traversing it troublesome in the least. In comparison to some of the more mountainous floors, the twenty second floor was a walk in the park.

But even that, he supposed, came with its own challenges. He found himself becoming bored very easily. Sure, the atmosphere was soothing and all, and there was a lot of things to look at, but after awhile a man like Bahr just wants to do something. Anything. Just walking in a straight like without so much as the simplest of obstacles in his path felt meaningless. Hell, even the mobs that popped up occasionally were dispatched without much difficulty. It seemed that this was a more casual floor than anything else.

But that was supposed to be the appeal of it, he supposed. A place for people to stop and relax for awhile after experiencing the horrors of war and the grueling daily grind that the citizens of the floating castle Aincrad endured every day. It was probably the very reason Lessa had sought refuge here. After all, hadn't she experienced one form or another of cruelty at the hands of the all might Cardinal?

Come to think of it, Bahr still had yet to figure out what exactly had happened. All he truly knew was that she had lost someone very close to her. Someone she loved. Whether that was a close friend, or someone she came to have romantic feelings for, it was undeniable that the experience of losing them had driven her to the precipice of insanity. It didn't seem as though she had gone over the edge, but she had come close. Her solitude over who knows how long a period of time, coupled with her stand off-ish and closed demeanor suggested that she had isolated herself because she now feared getting close to anyone. Whether that was for her protection or the protection of others was anyone's guess, but it was misguided nonetheless.

But enough worrying about that. Bahr had finally reached the base of the mountain it was time to find this lizard and return it to the fisherman so that he could get on with the day's activities.

But when he looked around, he found nothing. Not a trace of life anywhere. Strange. Wasn't this supposed to be a forest? Teeming with life? Or was the atmosphere intentionally designed to lead the seeker of the Red Salamander astray? To believe that there couldn't possibly be any life there, because the birds didn't sing and the insects refused to chirp. If that was the intention of the developers, they had done a fine job. The unfortunate consequence of their work was the fact that they had somehow made the area even more boring.

No matter. Bahr wasn't the sort to give up so easily. If the fisherman had told him that he would find a Red Salamander in these parts, he would find a Red Salamander in these parts. He doubted that the old hoot would lead him astray for no other purpose than his own amusement. Well, hopefully.

Eureka! The old man hadn't been lying after all!

All it had taken was for Bahr to return to his roots. To use a tried and true method of finding materials, loot, treasure chests, quest items, or anything in between. The art of shoving one's hand down any hole they found was a noble pursuit, and once again it had paid off for Bahr.

Whilst shoving his arm into a hole in a tree all the way to his shoulder, he felt something wriggling around down there. He hastily snatched it and pulled it out of the tree. But the sucker bit him! Bahr dropped the reptile in a mixture of shock and disgust. The old man hadn't told him that there was a possibility the thing would attack!

With a low grumble, Bahr cast his chagrin aside and set off after the disgusting creature. With any luck, he could capture it and stuff it into his inventory before it had a chance to chomp down into him again.

Luckily, the Red Salamander was stupid. Like, really stupid. If you can let yourself get outwitted by Bahr in thirty seconds or less, you're clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed. Bahr caught up to the thing as it scurried along the vegetated forest floor, shepherding it into a log that had the other opening pressed up against a hill. Trapped, and with no other place to go, the Red Salamander was forced to surrender. Bahr scooped it up and stuffed it into his inventory hastily, trying his best to avoid another unpleasant bite.

Nice. Now all he had to do was get back to to the fisherman. Which he did. Quickly. Like, super quickly. You wouldn't even believe how quick. How long had it taken to make his way to the base of the mountain? Three times as long as it took to get back, at least. Perhaps it was simply the excitement carrying him along.

"Got your critter," Bahr proudly proclaimed as he walked back out onto the dock, snatching the Red Salamander from his inventory and holding it up for the old fisherman to see. The man's eyes lit up as he took in the sight of the crimson reptile, grin creeping across his cheeks and passion burning in his expression.

"Good find!" the old man exclaimed. "And to have found it so quickly. I'm impressed! Here, hand it over." He then snatched the creature and skewered it through the hook of a separate fishing pole he had retrieved from his inventory, breathing an almost morbid sigh of satisfaction before casting the line out into the lake. "Now all there is to do is wait. It could be awhile before we get the bite we're looking for. Come, take a seat next to me and we can exchange stories to pass the time. What's your name, anyways?"

Failed to fish up King of Lakes

"Bahr. You?" The words were flat and devoid of emotion. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy the old man's company, or that he didn't appreciate thjs opportunity. It was simply the fact that he was sitting there being forced to wait yet again. Fishing had never been his strong suit, he just didn't have the patience for it.

But, as it turned out, he wouldn't need any patience for this one. As soon as he revealed his name, the old man had a bite. "Here it is! Take the reel and haul that sucker to the shore!" Before he knew it, he had been nearly pulled clean off of the dock, his heels only managing to catch traction at the very end. With a few huffs and heave, he began running back to shore, putting everything he had into pulling the monster from the waves.

And he did. And it stood. Are fish supposed to stand? No. But this fish didn't care about what it supposedly could or couldn't do.

Bahr scrambled to open his menu and navigate to the inventory panel, removing his Boots of Caerus and replacing them with the Hero's Hakama, a move that would hopefully offer him a little extra Mitigation to replace the luck boost he would be getting otherwise. Just as he dismissed the panels, the beast's foot was flying at him, which he narrowly managed to avoid. Yes, its foot.

Not like it mattered. Mitigation didn't seem to come into play when the beast sunk its massive teeth into Bahr and began receding back into the water. As it did, a genuine fear began to grip him by the throat. He was going to drown. This thing was going to drown him and then eat him. It was the only thought that raced through his mind as he struggled to free himself.

Not today.

As they were dragged into the depths, Bahr struggled and kicked and wriggled around with all of his might. Miraculously, he managed to free himself from the clutches of the monster. He kicked off of its face and blasted off toward the surface, taking a raspy breath as he broke through. That was too close. Way too damn close. Never again. He needed to get out of the water before that thing circled around for another bite. If it managed to get ahold of him again, he might not be capable of getting himself free.

It was the faster he had ever swam. Seriously, he could have sworn he was swimming faster than he could run. It must have been the fastest any human had ever gone in the water. Michael Phelps would have been straight up pissed.

It was probably the enhancements from his armor. No human has the right to outspeed the King of Lakes in its natural habitat. But he did. He made it back to shore with such ferocity that the sand exploded from the point of impact as he connected with it. He pushed himself up from the ground, spitting the gritty sand back onto the beach before standing tall and drawing his blade.

"Come get me, you silly [censored]. I gotta carve you into sushi before the sun sets, so don't keep me waiting."

Every word he spat seemed to sap away whatever little energy he had left more and more, but it didn't matter. He knew the game's engine would allow him to press on until his Energy value depleted. But until then, he had to keep his fighting spirit strong.

When it finally reared its ugly head again, Bahr was ready. His blade already glowing, he dashed forward and smacked it as hard as he could, sending it hurtling back into the lake from whence it came.

"Numbskull! What if it decides it doesn't want to come back!? You really want to try fishing for it again!?" the old man, who still had yet to name himself, called out.

"What is it with you fishermen and always giving me crap while I'm fighting monsters? Just stand to the side and shut up! I know what I'm doing!"

Not that the fisherman didn't have a good point. The mob could absolutely have a different aggro table than the rest of Aincrad, but something told Bahr he didn't really need to worry about that. If it had chased him out of the water once already, it was coming for his head already.

Wasn't long before it had surfaced once more, looking a tad worse for wear than it had just minutes before. Bahr cast a cocky grin toward the fisherman before dashing forward and thwacking it again. Just as before, it flew backward, skipping like a flat stone against the water before being fully submerged once more.

"So. You ever gonna tell me your name?" he inquired coyly.

"What? You're seriously worrying about that at a time like this!?" was the shocked response.

"What's the problem? The King of Lakes is out to sea. We have at least 120 seconds until it comes back. So? Your name?"

"It's Pete," the old man grumbled.

"Seriously!? You know, there's this fisherman on the first floor-"

"I know about goddamn Pete the Fisherman on the first floor! Everyone knows about Pete the Fisherman on the first floor! You don't need to tell me about him!"

"... You act like him, too."

"Just shut up and fight! It's coming back!"

And it was. As it surfaced once more, Bahr did exactly has he had done the other two times, charging up his blade and swinging at the thing with the intention of batting it back out into the lake, keeping his eye on the thing's health bar all the while. To his delight, this time it dipped into the yellow. But something was wrong. It wasn't skipping away. It was still right next to him.

It had bitten his sword as it was swinging at it! Wow, what a power play!

In another swift bite, it had Bahr in its clutches once more. It dragged him out into the lake, and just as he had before, Bahr struggled and wriggled until he managed to free himself from the creature's grasp. It was beginning to seem like this was just a mechanic of the fight, and Bahr wouldn't actually need to fear drowning unless the attack itself depleted his health to zero.

Really, had Bahr transformed into being part boat? He had to have had one of those boat motors attached to him. Nothing else explained how he could carve his body through the water with such tenacity. There was no reason for him to be outrunning the King of Lakes in, well, its own lake. Was it the size of the creature? Was it Bahr's deep-seated fear of being dragging into the water by an aquatic animal and drowning? It was anyone's guess.

But he made it back to shore before the overgrown fish, taking a little extra care this time not to slam his face into the sand. He emerged from the water to find Pete laughing at him.

"I've never seen someone swim as frantically as you! Aaaaagagagagag!"

Great. He laughed like Popeye.

"Shut up and go eat a can of spinach or something," was the only retort that Bahr could come up with.

Wasn't long before the fish had emerged from the murky depths and planted itself on the shore once more. It walked up toward Bahr and then sorta just... stood there. Like it was waiting for something. What was it waiting for? What was Bahr waiting for?

"What are you waiting for?" Pete asked, mirroring the narrator's thoughts on the matter.

"Shh. It's a mind game, and I've almost got it. Just let me handle this. Seriously, you need to shut up and let me work."

This fisherman had a way of getting to Bahr, just like the Pete of the first floor had. He reminded Bahr of his father in several ways. But that was a little weird to think about, and Bahr didn't need that in his headspace at the moment. He needed the unrelenting focus of a seasoned warrior as he stared the fish down, studying its every movement and twitch.

And so they stood. Staring at one another. Unmoving. Unflinching. The seconds turned into minutes, and it seemed like there was no end in sight for this epic staring contest. It was like the Metapod battle from the first season of Pokemon. Slow. Uneventful. Boring.

But it wasn't time to move yet. Bahr could sense it. They were in the mental game now. This fish had become more wary of his movements, and taking it for granted would be a costly mistake. No. Patience was the key. He needed patience to overcome this mob and take it down.

Speaking of which, why was he so dead set on destroying this thing? It felt like a bit of his fighting spirit had returned. Not the blind rage he once submitted to, but more like an appreciation for the challenge that combat brought. The way he had felt about it in the beginning before that damned sword complicated everything.

Jesus, how long had it been? It was almost like the writer had put himself into a corner when describing this staring contest nonsense. Like he hadn't expected it to go this far. Weird.

"Seriously, do something!"

"I am, you idiot! I've almost got it!"

Which, of course, was a lie. He had no way of saying that confidently. Even he had not expected this to go on for so long. Never before had he stared into the eyes of one of the monsters in this wretched world for so long. Was he losing the mind game? Could this fish possibly wear him down?

It certainly seemed it. It was totally unnerving. What was it thinking? Was it thinking at all? Was it broken? Had Cardinal messed with its aggro table or something? Perhaps it was only programmed to attack hostile opponents. Yeah, that could be it. Maybe if Bahr just stood still forever, it would never attack him.
