Bahr hadn't been here since he brought Cordephiusnous and Oscar along after their disappointing encounter with the second dragon hatchling. That entire day had been... well, really meh. But that wasn't going to be like today. No, today was special. Today was the day he really put some mobs in their place. He had found the perfect hunting grounds, and had brought along all the buffs he could have possibly needed to make it a fruitful endeavor. Once he reached the spot, he opened his inventory and took out all of the hot dogs he had commissioned Oscar to make. One my one, he downed the delicious cylinders of meat, taking care to savor the different textures and tastes that varied between the varying dogs. Once he was finished, it was time to begin. But not until he let his stomach settle. Holy crap, that was a lot of hot dogs. More than he could ever reasonably eat in real life. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #2 Share Posted September 13, 2019 Didn't take long before the first batch of bad guys showed up. Simple Cave Spiders, an easy mob that Bahr could handle easily. Right? Right? Wrong. As it turned out, these were Hyper Accurate Cave Spiders. As he rushed in to cleave into all four in a wide arc, he was pleased to find that he managed to connect with all four of them on his first attempt. Clearly the consumables were working. The bad news? Well, a couple of the Cave Spiders managed to clip him back for a sizable chunk of damage. He had neglected to equip armor with Mitigation because he believed that his consumables and evasion would allow him to last long against these mobs. But he had underestimated the average power of a mob on the twenty-first floor. Not that that was a problem. He would adjust accordingly and allow himself a bit of time to heal after the battle had concluded. No reason to panic if he didn't have an actual need to. Perhaps he couldn't last as long against these mobs as he originally believed, but that was no reason to lose confidence. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted September 13, 2019 These were noble and worthy adversaries, but Bahr knew better than to fall victim to their trickery. They were no match for a master like him. Clearly. All it took was one more wide swing of his blade to cleave through the remainder of the mobs and put them all to rest. As they each burst into clouds of polygonal blue confetti, a loot menu populated with his results. What he saw left him in awe. Over twenty thousand col! For only four mobs! Let alone the Perfects and the Dungeon Map! That was easily the best haul he had ever gotten from a mob drop, and the fun was only beginning. He would need to give himself a bit of a breather before he took on the next wave, but that wasn't an issue. Even if he took breaks that were twice as long as usual, he was still getting dramatically better results than he had during previous hunts. That alone was enough to fuel him with the energy and determination he needed for the next encounter. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #4 Share Posted September 13, 2019 He did finally have an excuse to use these potions he had been hanging onto forever, though. Without skipping a beat, he opened his inventory panel and materialized the three beginner potions, downing them all one after another. That managed to fill his health gauge up to mostly full - a welcome sight after taking so much more damage than he had been anticipating. He would need to make sure to be more careful with the next batch. He almost started salivating when thinking about how prosperous the next batch might turn out to be. How much col would he make off with today? Hell, with only a few more rotations like that, he could easily double the amount of col he already had. But why stop there? He might was well walk away with as much loot as physically possible. The more prepped he could be for Tier Three with as little col as spent possible, the better. But that all depended on whether or not he could get his items identified... Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted September 13, 2019 That didn't mean that he didn't need to pace himself, though. He seriously considered going after the next batch of mobs in his greedy fervor, but decided against it at the last minute. Judging by where his Energy was at, that would be a risky move. What if he missed one of them and didn't have the Energy to take it out afterward? Well, that would just be foolish. What a stupid way to sit there and have his HP drained, given how accurate the little suckers on this floor apparently were. No, sitting put until his Energy was fully replenished was obviously the right call, and he would probably thank himself for it later. Even if he didn't run out of Energy on the next batch of mobs, who was to say that he wouldn't on the next, or the one after that? Establishing good habits when hunting mobs was the key to a successful run. He had made the mistake of going in without full Energy in the past, and it had almost cost him dearly. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #6 Share Posted September 13, 2019 Finally, Energy restored. Time to go looking for trouble again. And it wasn't long before he found it. Just as before, he charged up his blade and effortlessly cleaved into all four of them at the same time, plunging each of their health bars to exactly half what they had been originally. But they didn't even flinch, all launching attacks right back at him in unison before he could react. This time three of them got him, and he watched as his health bar depleted more than he would ever be comfortable with in a single rotation. What the hell? Was his evasion working for him at all? It didn't seem like it from where he was standing. All that waiting around to recover energy and HP, and for what? So it could all go down the drain again? Ridiculous. He knew that the twenty-first floor was bound to be more difficult than other floors he had visited, but this was just a little bit ridiculous. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #7 Share Posted September 13, 2019 So, what, he was just missing now, too? When he charged up his blade and went in for a second swing, he only managed to connect with two of his targets. It was a good thing he had opted to go the safe route and regenerate all of his Energy before going in for the second pack of mobs. He had gear specifically tailored to lower the odds of him missing and lower the enemies' chances of hitting him. So why didn't it feel that way? Why did it feel like his equipment was doing him any favors? Was it because these were Tier Three monsters? No, it was because he was off of his game. He didn't have the blood lust he usually had when hunting. There was a part of him, deep down, that really wanted to let that caged animal loose. But he knew it was for the better if he didn't. He had a lot more to gain by maintaining his composure and keeping a cool head. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #8 Share Posted September 13, 2019 Yeah, waiting to recover Energy was definitely the right call. He wouldn't have had what he needed to finish the job on this batch of mobs if he hadn't played it safe. Who knows how much more HP he would have lost? He didn't even want to think about it. It would be a crying shame if he had to cut a day of hunting short after consuming so many buffs simply because he hadn't had the foresight to make the right moves like a veteran should. Not that he was a veteran or anything. 'Intermediate' was probably the most accurate way of putting it. When the mobs burst into clouds of blue triangular pixels, Bahr investigated the loot panel that populated. Another Intermediate Dungeon Map! Not bad! The col was starting to rack up, too. Over forty thousand since he started, if his math was right. These buffs he had consumed were absolutely monstrous - were all the best hunters in Aincrad using strategies like this? Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #9 Share Posted September 13, 2019 Time to recover. The Energy was usually the main concern, but now he was worried about whether his HP would be up to snuff or not, as well. It wasn't often that he took three crits to the face all at once. After all, the odds were astronomically low for something like that happening, right? Like, something like a one in one hundred twenty five percent chance? Less than a percent chance of occurring? Absolute madness. In the end, he would probably be fine to continue along. Provided he didn't take any more undue hits to the face, he could just continue to regain HP in between the packs of mobs, while he was waiting for his Energy to recover. There was, of course, absolutely no guarantee that it would play out this way. But you know what? He wasn't worried. Energy loss was something that he was accustomed to, but HP loss? Practically a pipe dream. The past two packs of mobs had just been a crazy fluke. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted September 13, 2019 Or so he hoped, anyways. He would find out when the next wave came. For now, he just had to sit back and watch his Energy and HP slowly refill themselves. While he waited, he figured it would be a good idea to kick around this quandary he had been experiencing lately. Just what was it about his current situation that was affecting his combat so much? Clumsy mobs like that would have been super easy to avoid in the past. Three of them landing a crit on him at the same time was unheard of. In fact, he couldn't remember a time that that had ever happened to him. He had always been one of the most elusive individuals in the entirety of the floating castle Aincrad. If anyone had see a blunder like that, and the two that had simultaneously hit him in the batch before, they would stay to have doubts. He would do better on the next batch. Focus, get energized, and take the fight to them before they could take it to him. In this situation, the best defense was a good offense. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #11 Share Posted September 13, 2019 And he did do better on the next batch. Marginally. In the area of not getting hit, anyways. Only one managed to land a strike against him this time around, which was still more than he was comfortable with. At this rate, he was still bleeding HP faster than he could get it back. But having only one hit him instead of two or three was a welcome change. But he also managed to miss one of them. He cursed under his breath as his sword narrowly missed one of the mobs, sailing right over its... Head? Thorax? He wasn't really sure what to make of it. Bahr 0 Posted September 13, 2019 Author #12 Share Posted September 13, 2019 "God, damn it!" he muttered as one of the cave spiders managed to score yet another hit against his vulnerable frame. From deep within, he felt a familiar feeling crawling to the surface. Bubbling, frothing, oscillating. It was the rage that he had felt leave him not long before. The very thing that made him the efficient fight he had become. Perfect. This was why he had gone out to hunt. To get that to come out again. To study it, identify it, and, if possible, control it. Imagine holding the raw power of a nuclear explosion in the palm of your hand, along with the experience and focus required to divvy out pieces of it in a very precise manner whenever necessary. That was his desire. And so he attempted it. He swung his massive blade in a wide arc, managing to strike all four of the creatures before him. Three died, one lived. But it would fall soon enough. Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #13 Share Posted September 14, 2019 And so it did. Reduced to azure dust beneath the might of his power. He had managed to hold back a bit and use only the strength necessary to destroy the beast, instead of going all out. It was a good start. But rage was not an easy thing to control. It wasn't steady, like a tepid creek rolling through a forest. It was wild and unpredictable, moving violently to the beat of its own drum, on a still unknown whim that was not easy to identify nor contain. It spiked occasionally. Surging to the surface almost faster than Bahr could brace for. Somehow, he managed to keep the reservoir from spilling over so far. But how long could he last? It had, after all, gotten the better of him countless times in the past. He owed many victories to it. But the cost had been to great, and now he found himself hesitating. Was it more foolish to deny that part of himself, or to attempt to control it? Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #14 Share Posted September 14, 2019 The matter of his health was beginning to become a problem. He was still in the green, but more and more slipped away with each battle he engaged in. Though he had brought along plenty of buffs, he hadn't brought anything that would replenish his HP. It was because he had trusted in the ability of his equipment to allow him to slip through the myriad of attacks headed his way, as he usually did. But there was just something about these higher floors that made that more or less a pipe dream. Probably because the monsters here were higher leveled than he was. Not that that would stop him from continuing to eviscerate them. This was good, in the end. A little bit of danger never did Bahr any harm. It brought the best out of him and forced him to think outside the box with his approach. Perhaps simply relying on his armor to give him the speed necessary to dodge was the wrong approach. He had to become more dynamic, more elusive, more difficult to see, much less hit. Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #15 Share Posted September 14, 2019 Yes, that could work. On the next batch of mobs, he would try a bit harder to maneuver himself around them before attacking. It may have seemed like a minor and obvious adjustment to some, but to a man like Bahr, this was a revolutionary idea. He had not needed to put so much thought into combat in the past. And, well, his anger hadn't allowed it. Run in, hit stuff, get loot. It was a simple method, and it had worked flawlessly countless time. But these higher floors just demanded a bit more finesse than he was used to doling out. But that was fine. Improvise, adapt, overcome. It was a necessity when in the heat of war. Those who clung to the same tired tricks would inevitably be left in the dust by those who knew better. Who is the more seasoned soldier? The one that has experience in various war styles, and can adapt to several scenarios with ease? Or the one that knows only one technique, that being the most obvious and upfront? Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #16 Share Posted September 14, 2019 Bad idea. When the next batch of Cave Spiders arrived, he tried to maneuver around to the back of the pack and attack them from there. Not only had this lowered his accuracy to a degree that he only managed to hit two of them, he still took damage from two of them as well. Red began to seep into his vision, and he felt his limbs beginning to tremble as anger permeated from his core outward. Scarecrow's Sickle began to vibrate with hungry anticipation, and all at once the adrenaline of pure rage washed over him. Stop. Step back. He shook his head, doing everything he could to pour out the anger and regain control of himself. He did, but only fleetingly. He tried once more, and finally he managed to grab the reigns and reel himself in. He released the breath he had been holding back and panted for a moment, exhaustion beginning to set in. It seemed that keeping himself in check was more exhausting than even fighting four mobs at once. Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #17 Share Posted September 14, 2019 But that was fine. This, in fact, was perfect. Exactly the moment he had been waiting for. Now would be the ultimate test of whether or not he was fit to control the power of his rage and divert it into something more focused. The Cave Spiders came at him again, all four attacking in unison. He planted the tip of his sword into the ground and shoulder checked the blade into one of them, causing it to recoil back and bump into the one beside it. They both lost their balance and had to cancel their attacks. When the next one was within range, he grabbed the hilt of his sword and swung around on it, dodging the attack and using the momentum of the spin to kick it back toward the other two. The last one was the easiest; Bahr simply pulled his sword from the ground and caught its fangs with the blade, using the adrenaline of the fight to push with all of his might and force it back onto the pile. Once they were all in one place, he struck. Two died, two remained. Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #18 Share Posted September 14, 2019 A tremendous step forward. It had been masterfully played, and he could feel that his anger had been applied properly and with the accuracy he needed. But it was difficult to maintain this sort of focused state. He was too eager to go in for a follow up attack, and only managed to kill one out of the two remaining spiders. An amateur mistake, and one that he wouldn't have made were he simply cutting loose. Ironically, his desire to control himself and introduce a little more precision into his technique was the very thing that was causing him to falter. How strange. It didn't matter, though. At least he wasn't taking any damage anymore - or at least not as frequently as he had been. When the remaining spider lunged at him, he sidestepped the clumsy attack easily, just as he should have been able to do with all of the spiders before it. Bahr 0 Posted September 14, 2019 Author #19 Share Posted September 14, 2019 The Sword Art whistle. A blade cleaving through the air. And then it was done. Finally, the mob was no more. A cursory glance at Bahr's health bar revealed that he was officially in the yellow. A little unsettling, but his healing factor would likelly bring him back up into the green before the next batch of mobs. Then, if he could just kill them flawlessly, he would have even more time to heal. That would be good. Or so he hoped. Looking at the loot he had collected so far, his eyes lit up. Never before had he collected so much after such a small hunt. It might have even been worth it to head to the eleventh floor and pick up some stuff from there as well. Or would it? He already had about the best weapon he could hope for - did he really need need anything else? And his armor - it was already crafted by one of the finest tailors in all of Aincrad. Bahr 0 Posted September 16, 2019 Author #20 Share Posted September 16, 2019 Hmm. Better safe than sorry, he supposed. After he felt satisfied with his Tier Three grinding, he would pop down to the Tier Two floors and collect some stuff from there. Couldn't hurt. If he found what he was looking for, perhaps he would finally afford to rid himself of this wretched weapon and translate his build over to his end goal. He needed some more experience and a few level ups before he was fully ready, but it would all be worth it in the end. That's what he kept convincing himself, anyways. The truth was, he had absolutely no idea if it was the right move to change his build in the way that he was thinking. By the numbers, it seemed like the smart move. But there wasn't really any way that he could know, for sure. He had grown accustomed to his current build, and he found comfort in the fact that it had carried him so far. Too jarring a shift could throw off his game and get him into serious trouble if he wasn't careful.
