"Hello Dear, I see you are in need of a profession. May I interest you in Alchemy?" a sweet voice rang out as Dederick waltzed through the streets of the Town of Beginnings, drawing his attention away from the city exit that he had been eyeing for the past few days. He figured that it was high time for him to venture past the confines of the wall and see what the rest of this world had to offer. Before being rudely interrupted by the shady woman who was now holding a glowing multicolored vial of mysterious liquid in her hand. "Now, I know it may seem very science-y and scary, but I believe you can do it! And I hope you feel the same way." With that, she beckoned him into the tent she had set up.

Upon entering, she began fluttering about the surprisingly spacious lean to, her movements graceful and elegant as she showed him the various ways she could sprinkle ingredients together to craft potions with numerous qualities. "Now, I can teach you all about it sweety, but I seem to have ran out of some of my precious materials to give you a how-to on crafting. Would you be a dear and run off to get me some? I think all I need is five, and I can help you on your way!"

"Consider it done," was his simple response before turning around and leaving the tent. From what he had heard, he could gather materials by slaying monsters - which was exactly what he had intended to do that day, anyway. Not in your typical aggressive manner, either. He planned on taking a more measured, passive approach. He didn't need to deal a lot of damage if he could make his opponents slay themselves, did he? While he himself found it to be a clever approach, there were undoubtedly other who had done it before him. He imagined that that just spoke volumes to its effectiveness in battle, were it the case. If not, he would see soon enough.

When he walked upon the field, he found that there were an abundance of mobs around to try his had against. Boars, it seemed, had overrun the plains of Floor One. He drew his sword and approached one, striking it in the hind quarters while it was ignoring him. This angered the creature, and it along with its three friends retaliated. Dederick barely felt a thing, but the enhancements of his armor reduced the majority of their health bars to near nothingness - one depleting entirely.

A loot panel populated in front of Dederick, and he inspected it while ignoring the boars that still circled around him. He didn't feel threatened by them in the slightest. In fact, he hoped they would hit him again and put themselves out of their misery. The loot he had acquired from the pig wasn't anything particularly spectacular to behold, but he had already nearly acquired all of the materials the woman had asked for him to get his hands on. He theorized that by the time he was done with this singular pack of mobs, he would have all that he needed to move forward and begin his profession. But why stop there?

With the boar he had previously targeted out of the way, he turned his attention to the one with the highest health and struck it with his blade. Though the sword sliced cleanly through the air - and its target - it didn't deal very much damage. Such was to be expected from a vanity item, Dederick supposed. Inexplicably, the pack of Boar seemed to back off and wait for his next move as opposed to attacking again.

Dederick simply shrugged. This was the first video game he had ever played, and he was uncaring as to whether or not this was typical mob behavior. All he knew was that the brief reprieve gave him an opportunity to line up his next attack and not take any undue scuffs against his armor. In a flash, he sword was ripped forth through the air once more, colliding with the hide of one of the boars with low health and then tearing through it. Its health bar was reduced to entirely empty, and it consequently combusted into a shower of infinite blue pixels.

Another boar took this as its opportunity to strike. He rushed forward, bonking its head harmlessly against Dederick's armor before similarly poofing into a cloud of azure confetti. The loot panels that generated afterward made it apparent that his quest was already practically completed. Beyond that, he had acquired some pretty attractive loot, from the looks of it.

The next attack was delivered, and the next boar fell before with with complete ease. As it did, even more Materials seemingly fell into his lap, along with another weapon. And to think, he had been worried that not having a good weapon might make things difficult for him. It seemed that, in this case, a good defense was the best offense.

Such was the way with Dederick. He wasn't the overly aggressive sort. He had no reason to charge in headlong and attack with all of his might and ferocity. In fact, he viewed doing so as foolish. Slow, methodical, and calculated measurements of each action taken in combat were the obvious way to win in the end. Getting in over your head and attacking with wild abandon left too much open to error. And Dederick hated any margin of error.

With everything that he needed, it seemed that it was time to head back to the witch and resume his training. Or was it?

No. It would be worth it to hang around and commit to slaying a few more mobs. The more loot and col he could haul back to town, the better. There was no telling what sorts of fearsome monsters - or players - he would run into in the future. It made sense to come as stocked as physically possible and ready to face any threat that may present itself, even the threats he hadn't thought of. And as it just so happened, he knew a man that would be able to identify his new weapons and armor.

So he approached the next batch of boars and ripped into one, just as before. It turned around and retaliated instantly, but Dederick had the presence of mind to sidestep the clumsy swine. Its three friends all attack in unison, and Dederick was surprised to find that one did not have its health depleted. "Interesting. Are you the alpha of this group? I'll be sure to attack you next, then."

And so he did. But he was surprised to find that the boar then immediately backed down while the other three came in for their attacks. All three of them struck Dederick's armor, but only one actually sustained any damage from it, bursting into a cloud of polygonal azure fractals. "Interesting," he mused, examining the health bars of the opposing boars. It seemed that there was something else at play here that he wasn't yet grasping, and that was the key to all of this.

He dismissed the loot panel that populated and readied his black once more, azure hues flickering to his own health bar, which was neatly tucked away in the corner of his heads up display. It seemed that they had managed to push him into the yellow. Never before had his health been so low, but strangely enough, it didn't bother him. He knew that he could still handle these miscreants and get back the health easily.

One of the boars that had struck him during the previous rotation lunged forward once more, smacking its noggin against Dederick's breastplate and consequently being reduced to polygonal azure dust that was strewn about the field by the rolling winds that ran through the area. Dederick noticed that the love tap he had received this time seemed less harsh that the previous time it had attacked him.

"I see," he concluded, his analysis of the situation complete. It seemed that whenever an enemy mob ran a "crit" against him, the Thorns property of his armor wouldn't activate. If that were the case, perhaps there was a flaw to his strategy after all. No matter. He swung his sword forward and reduced another of the pesky vermin to nothing more than pixels, another loot panel populating in front of him as he did so. The final boar of the pack simply took a few steps back nervously as Dederick closed the gap between them.

Without even so much as a flicker of remorse or hesitation, Dedrick cleaved into the boar, causing it to squeal and scurry back and away from him. He woud have felt bad for it, had he not known it was merely data. And a creation of Kayaba, no less. The traitor of the human race, locking ten thousand human beings into a prison of sin, the likes of which there was no escape. Anything created by that man was the embodiment of evil, and Dederick would see to it that they were eradicated.

The boar was slightly faster than he had anticipated, though. Or perhaps it was the fact that the armor he was wearing was quite heavy, and did not allow for much nimble movement. Not that he minded, he would follow the boar to the ends of the plains if he needed to. The loot was likely worth it, based on what he had managed to acquire so far.

But that was merely a theory. Having no experience with video games beyond what he had managed to familiarize himself with within this world so far, Dederick truly had no idea what he was doing or what direction any of this would take him. Was Perfect Quality equipment even good? Was he fooling himself by believing that he had acquired anything with value from such easily killed mobs? It was difficult to say. But anything with enhancements had to be somewhat better than what he was rolling around with at present time. His sword was purely a vanity item, and held no value beyond serving as a conductor for his Sword Arts - which he couldn't even properly use yet. His armor was adequate, but there was still better armor to be had. With any luck, perhaps he could glean something useful from the drops he had acquired thus far. Maybe even make it easier to slay tougher mobs down the road.

Very suddenly, the boar turned around, a crimson glint in its eye indicating that it had had enough of being hunted down like an animal to be culled. Unfortunately for the swine, that was exactly what it was. It charged Dederick, but he was ready, plunging the tip of his sword forward and into its snout. The boar took a decent amount of damage from the attack, but unfortunately it was not enough to do it in for good, allowing it to hang on by a mere sliver of HP.

The attack also hadn't seemed to affect its inertia whatsoever. It continued along, past Dederick's attack and struck him. Dederick took a step back to brace himself, lest he fall over, before righting himself once more and looking indignantly upon the Spawn of Kayaba that dared to defy him. "Your purpose in this life is to serve as a sacrifice to players like me. Kneel and accept your fate, swine."

To his complete and utter surprise, the boar seemed to... listen. It stood in place and lowered its front half onto one knee, lowering its head as though to bow to its new master. What a disgusting display. That had merely been Dederick's way of 'talking smack,' he had never actually expected the creature to go through with it. Where was its fighting spirit? Its drive to survive? It almost felt like cheating to get a win in a way like this. But if a mob was going to present him a golden opportunity on a silver platter, he wasn't about to just give it up.

And so he tore his sword across its neck, lopping off its head in one clean motion. Both pieces of the beast then blew in up a shower of azure pixels that werre swept away by the wind and slowly disintegrated into complete and utter oblivion.

At this point, Dederick was satisfied with the day's events. He had only slain two packs of mobs, but he had come away with far more than he had going in, and didn't really feel like biting off more than he could chew. He was still onle Level One, after all. Pushing things too far out of pride or some sort of ill-conceived greed would only lead to calamity. As he had decided earlier, it was better to take things like this at a slow and methodical pace as opposed to rushing anything.

And so he started on his way back to the Town of Beginnings. He had more than enough materials to satisfy the quest parameters, and he was interested to see what he could do with these potions. Would they make him more powerful? Faster? Smarter? There was only one way to find out. In the real world, he would never dream of consuming mysterious liquids such as these.

But within the confines of the floating caste Aincrad, he didn't feel the same restrictions. These were not the same as liquors - they were designed to aid him in combat as well as other arenas as well. It would be foolish of him to deny that based on some sort of moral inhibition in the real world.

While his moral code remained intact, Dederick was not stupid enough to deny good resources when they were right in front of his face. He knew that these potions would not make him inebriated - of that much he was sure. Any mental effects they had on him would be his own reaction to the influence it had on his stats, and he would do well to contain them in a way that maintained his integrity.

All this to say that he found nothing personally wrong with taking up potion brewing as a profession. If it helped advance him and others through the game, it was a worthwhile investment in his eyes.

In fact, most anything that helped him progress through the game - save for actual sin - was something he was prepared to do. He feared no monster or evil, for the Lord was on his side and would light the path. Even earlier, when Dederick's HP dipped lower than the half way point, he did not fear the situation. For he knew God would guide him to victory, and that his life was never actually in any danger.

The Town of Beginnings was starting to get closer now. Dederick hadn't realized how far he had ventured outward in pursuit of the boars. Strangely, he did not at any point feel uncomfortable about it. In fact, it felt liberating to get out of that musty town for a day and experience the great outdoors again, even if it was all just a virtual illusion. He had missed spending time with nature, and nature had missed him. He could feel it.

Speaking of, a peculiar flower had caught his eye. It seemed a bit out of place in the field - orange in coloration and small in stature, unlike any other vegetation he had laid eyes on so far that day. Its tangerine hues reflected off of his eyes, complimenting their azure complexion. For some reason, he felt compelled to grab it. He reached out and plucked the morsel from the earth, its stem dissipating into pixels while the rest remained. A small panel populated in front of him, detailing the flower as a material of some sort.

"Perfect," he chirped as he stuffed the item away into the confines of his inventory. Something like that was sure to make a wonderful potion or crystal. He figured that the witch in the Town of Beginnings was bound to make him craft something, so he figured that this item would be a good place to start with that.

The gates were closing in, now. Along with them, sherbet hues started to encroach upon the sky, illuminating everything below with a tangerine glow that matched the flower he had just picked. Not particularly wanting to get caught out in the middle of the field once dusk hit, Dederick's pace quickened to a brisk power walk, his armor clanking slightly with each and every step he took.

At long last, he reached the gates, the guards that oversaw the entrance giving him nothing more than a nod and silently allowing him passage through.
While Dederick knew he was safe within these walls, he couldn't help but feel like security was a bit lax. How did they know he wasn't a serial killer, or a thief, or-

Oh, right. The green cursor. Yeah, that ought to do it. He sometimes still had to remind himself that he was in a game and not in real life.

It was strange to suddenly remember that, at all times, he had a little crystal floating above his head that let other players know what kind of person he was. Or, at least, whether or not he was a criminal. Having never actually set eyes on an orange player before, it was difficult to imagine what an encounter like that would be like. Certainly, if they had an orange cursor, they had to be immoral and a waste of space. There was no excuse for committing a crime in a land where everyone was trapped and vulnerable.

When he approached the tent he had departed from before, the old woman was waiting for him. "Ah, you've finally returned! I was beginning to get a bit worried. Did you manage to find the materials I asked for?" she inquired, wringing her hands for some reason.

"Absolutely, and more. Seventeen in total. I hope that that will be enough."

"Oh, how splendid! How on earth did you manage to collect so many? I've had travelers leave here and spend days collecting even just the minimum of five!" Evangeline exclaimed, wringing her hands even faster. Her mannerisms were beginning to make Dederick a tad nervous.

"Uhm... I just fought some mobs, and-"

"What!? You!? A level one!? Preposterous!" It was as though she had never imagined such a scenario. Dederick couldn't have been the only level to go out and fight mobs on his first quest like this. He was sure of it.

"Yes... Though I didn't do very much damage to them myself. They did all of the work for me," he mused, silently recounting the experience he had had earlier that day in the field. It had been entertaining watching mobs destroy themselves against his armor. He wondered if it would always been that easy? Probably not. As he became stronger, so too would the mobs he encountered.

"Well then! Come, come! Let's see what you've got!"

Just as Dederick had suspected, the old with wanted him to prove that he had what it took to be an alchemist. And after his first embarrassing failure in which he actually combusted the materials he was working with, he started to think that maybe he didn't. Nevertheless, he tried again. And again. And again.

Seven attempts. Seven failures.

He wiped sweat from his brow as he took a deep breath. He had never imagined that it would be so difficult to craft a basic salve. It was then that the image of the orange flower he had plucked earlier floated through his mind. On a whim, he retrieved the item from his inventory and mixed it in with a few other ingredients in the tent, mashing them together into a moist paste. Once he was finished, the tangerine ointment flashed to signify a successful craft, its orange glow complimenting the azure glint in his eye. He had finally done it!

"Congratulations, youngster! You're a full-fledged Alchemist now! Go ahead and keep the remainder of the Materials you collected, and here's a few more for your journey!"

Dederick graciously accepted the quest reward, but this old lady was really starting to creep him out. Without saying another word, he gave her a stiff nod and exited the tent, hoping to get as far away from this area of town as possible.
