MOTTO: "Just... one more... pull..."

       > identifications.

       > junk selling.

Amid the decorated establishments of the Town of Beginnings' trading sector is a small wooden building that has certainly seen better days. It stands on shaky foundations, bracketed by weathered birch walls that have long since lost their varnish and are marked by deep, permanent grooves. Two glass windows hidden behind rusted outer grates frame either side of a creaky wooden door, and often, at truly godawful hours of the night, the shop would remain lit up in a warm approachable yellow and the door would be left unlocked. Despite its generally unattractive appearance, however, this little shop has been a fixture on this side of town for years. Regulars and business-owners of the trading sector regard it with the same fondness as one would have for an old friend that you are mildly concerned about. Perhaps even a minor renovation would be cause for great anxiety.

A sign is posted at the door, but rarely followed:

Open from Mondays to Saturdays
8 AM to 11 PM

You enter the shop.

Immediately, you are greeted by a musky scent -- the kind that reminds you of secondhand bookstores, if you've ever been to one; and it brings you feelings of relaxation and safety.

Next, you lay your eyes upon the interior and all notion of comfort is shunted out of your mind at a truly unimaginable speed. Frankly, to call it a mess is an understatement. For some reason or another, the space is littered with a vast assortment of items of varying purposes and sizes, too many to name, stacked and propped against wooden shelves and cabinets, stuffed and spilling out of crates, and some you even have to step over as you make your way to the back of the shop where you assume the counter is located (and not buried under the mess -- including the shopkeeper herself). Is Pandora's undergoing that renovation after all? Why is it even open in such a state? You wonder how a place like this has remained standing all of these years.

You turn a corner, and your dread lessens upon seeing that this area has a better sense of order. A bright-eyed young woman looks up from behind the counter and offers you her best customer service smile.

"Welcome! How may I help you today?"

--She shoved the last of the overfilling crates into a corner and... done! After what felt like weeks of work, An was finally done setting up shop! The silver-haired player admired her work and internally cheered.

But why on earth did she even have this much of a mess for her shop? She was a newbie, barely even level fifteen, and she shouldn't have this much junk lying around! The silver-haired player tilted her head in deep thought. Then she couldn't think of anything and chalked it up to some random antics she just didn't remember. She had a job - and she actually felt herself glowing with pride as she thought that; it sounded so mature!! -- now and it was time to actually get to work!

An made her way over to the table at the back and took out two of the items she had looted from the goblin cave earlier.

Koga was just walking through the streets when he'd noticed a particular store name. 'Pandora's Box' as a man who had some Greek heritage in his family (you'd never guess it), he was slightly intrigued and decided to walk in...Well, the place was a mess...Pandora's Box was a bit literal in this case. "Uhm, hello? I got some things to sell...and to buy...if you have 'em?"

Once the shopowner appeared, the man smiled at her and produced the things he needed to sell. A weapon, a trinket, a couple armors. Usual stuff. "And I'll take one TP Crystal, please," he tacked on at the end, already sending over the Col.

A merchant's shop? On Floor 1? Finally, NIGHT sighed, pushing open the door haphazardly. Her senses were immediately greeted with a pleasant, homely smell between book pages, but her eyes were cast with a dreary view. Immediately, her senses to keep things clean kicked in, but begrudgingly, she held them still. M-Maybe this was on purpose, yeah--!!

Struggling to keep her hands to herself, she placed the items she wanted to be rid of onto the counter, grimacing madly and bouncing about on the spot. "Junk selling," she spoke, in a low voice, trying to keep her eyes on the shop keep and not the mess around her.

Another day (night), another set of identifications! Well... it was honestly just one. Somehow, amidst all of this mess she made, An only had one piece of unidentified equipment. Then what were the rest of these scattered items for?!

Don't. Question. It.

So when a customer swung by and she piped up with her usual greeting, An kind of hoped he had at least one unidentified piece with him. She felt it was a waste, finishing a day with only one of her daily identifications used. He had one, a few, and the silver-haired girl lit up.

For junk sale.

So did the next girl.

Oh, right. That was a function. An didn't look too disappointed though, if anything, she just felt a bit awkward as she took their items and effectively dissolved them for Col while they watched. Less work, but still loads of shop EXP earned. This was nice, too. "All done," she would say as she sent the Col over to them via trade windows... after triple-checking her computations for the division of Col. "Thank you and please come again!"

Returning to the piece of light armor, her jaw dropped at the notification that presented itself to her.

"If leaving it for a while was all it took, then I'll definitely do it again!"

And then she identified the next slot and got [Loot Die].

Ew.

Scrolling idly through her inventory, Arabelle found two unidentified trinkets from that one quest she took some few months ago. They were both T1 and she was proud to say that she was at a higher tier now and didn't need them at all! So how about some charity?

She had heard that a player named Andromeda opened a little general store down at Floor 1's trade district. Good choice, it was a part of the game many players visited frequently. No matter the level, someone would always need something from the NPCs or the player-ran shops that were already established down there from the early days of the game.

"Hey," she greeted. "An..."

There was some familiarity in her tone. She remembered fighting alongside the girl for the most part of the Halloween event - and she spent more time in a team with her than she did her actual best friend. It was undeniable that some sort of friendship had formed.

At least... An ranked high enough on her chart that Arabelle gave her the benefit of the doubt with whatever the heck this mess of a shop was.

"I'm giving this to you." The small purple-haired girl tossed the trinkets onto the counter, along with enough Col to cover two identifications. "Merchants get more EXP when they identify stuff, right? So do just that, but don't bother sending it back unless it's a unique. No pressure or anything, I just thought I could help you along a little bit. Good luck with your shop!"

With a small wiggle of her fingers, she turned and left.

"Welcome! How may I -- h-hello there, senpai!"

Oh no. That sounded weird. That totally sounded weird, didn't it? She picked up that nickname when the smaller girl helped her during the Halloween event, but didn't that sound too familiar now that they were just merchant and customer? An turned beet red. She hardly even considered that Arabelle would pay a visit; she hadn't told the girl just yet and she - really, really - would have preferred if Arabelle came by when her shop was in a better state.

Eeeeeee--

Fortunately (unfortunately?), her unexpected customer didn't stay for too long. She left before An could embarrass herself any more.

The amateur merchant looked down at the trinkets she left on the counter with sudden determination.

I'm definitely going to get a unique enhancement!

...tl;dr An did not get a unique enhancement.

To say that NIGHT was hauling a lot of baggage would be not only precise, but insightful, at this point. From her latest expedition, she went straight to Pandora's when she had the chance, a handful of curiosities to be verified. It's what she opened with first, "Identify these, please, when you get the chance."

Then she lugged two large hempen sacks onto the counter, just a little away from the items she'd laid out earlier. She nearly lost the request she'd recited in her head earlier, but managed to squeak out a, "And junk sell.. uh.. these... um... sorry..." before ducking out the store, shamefully waiting outside until the merchant was done.

Koga walked into the merchant's shop again. Although it was a bit of a mess, he still found this place to be rather appealing. Plus the merchant herself was kinda cute, and Koga thought she was nice. Might as well give her some business...even if that was just junkselling a crap ton of stuff.

With a loud clatter, Koga practically emptied the contents of his inventory onto the poor girl's counter. The man sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck and gave the woman an awkward smile. "Sorry, but uh...do you mind junkselling these for me?" Oh, this poor girl...

"Hello!" An's greeting held more cheer as she recognized the girl who just walked in. She was the one who came by for junk selling just a few days ago-- did that mean An just earned herself a loyal customer? "How may I help you?"

Said girl proceeded to lay out sets of armor and a weapon on the table. For identification. Then she went and lugged in a sack. No... two sacks!

"U--Uhm." But no, showing any rudeness was definitely not good for business! An looked at the stuff, then at the girl with the best smile she could muster. "I'll get this done quick, no worries!"

Then the second customer went in. Oh, she recognized this one, too! She gave him her usual greeting with a bright smile.

...Said customer was also lugging a sack with him.

The amateur merchant was sweating. How was she supposed to get all of this done? She politely told the man to come back tomorrow night as it would take a while to junk sale all of his stuff then closed up shop early for the night when he exited and was too far off to notice.

No. More. Orders.

She could almost hear Billy yelling at her.

An looked down at the stuff now cluttering her counter and cracked her knuckles with a huff. She wouldn't let any of these items go unsold tonight!

...An let all of those items go unsold last night. But don't blame her! She fell asleep on her counter just as her last identification finished and then jolted awake in the morning with a horrible sense of dread.

She had told them both to return tonight!

The amateur merchant made her breakfast quick; she grabbed some cup noodles from her stock and finished it in seconds. Her daily adventures could wait, she was practically in the game equivalent of her finals-week panic mode! An cleared the mess from her counter, dumped the items for junk sale on the floor (they were getting destroyed anyway), and picked up the two last sets of armor for evaluation.

***

An could hardly believe it. She finished... and right on time for opening hours! With a sigh of relief, she counted her Col as she walked and dragged herself over to the front of her shop to flip the sign to 'OPEN.' She would greet the two customers with her usual practiced smile as they went in and received their respective requests.

"Thank you and please come again!"

NIGHT walked back into the store. The junk sell was done, and she exhaled, feeling somewhat comforted by the idea that all those items were gone. Col in hand, she went over to examine the items before her.

... There wasn't anything she wanted; not on the enhancements, at least. The equipment in general... just looked too cool to pass up. Were those items really what she'd gotten for her troubles? She picked them up, examining them over, before bowing over to the shopkeep. "I appreciate your hardwork," the woman announced, trying to hide her mix of excitement and disappointment all at once. "Thank you so much for your services!"

Lonzo walked in and looked around the merchant shop. He might have to come back here again for some of the crystals but he wasn't going to buy them yet. He brought out the odd items he got on his quest and his body ached from it all over again seeing them on the table. He looked at the table and started to write it all down and nodded at the price. It wouldn't be bad given how much there was. He was a bit curious to see what it'd all turn into actually. "I hope I can watch you identify them. I'm curious about what that'd look like. Though if that disturbs you I can go if you'd rather....The name is Lonzo by the way. I also don't mind adventuring so if you'd like we can go on one. Especially with someone as lovely as yourself." he couldn't resist. "I also own a pub in Horunka if you ever wanted to stop by."

He then paid for the service and waited around to see what might happen.

  • 2 weeks later...

"Welcome to my shop! How may I help you?" Another day, another new customer. An was admittedly feeling a bit nervous -- that feeling hadn't really left her ever since she had to handle two mega orders at once -- and she hoped this guy didn't start off too bad... oh, four identifications! That she could get done in a night and it was the exact number of her daily crafts too, leaving her feeling pretty satisfied.

"While I... work?" Unusual request. "Sure! It's a lot less fun than advertised though."

It was just an option that appeared whenever she picked up an unidentified item. The game officially recognized her profession as a merchant, so she had access to it. Tapping it consumed Col and gave you a waiting time. Rinse and repeat until all enhancement slots were filled up.

When she went to proudly demonstrate, An lit up at the mention of adventure and she was just about to momentarily ditch her job to see if he was serious when her face involuntarily turned red. "L-l-lovely?! I, I wouldn't uhhh-- I mean, ehehehe, thanksIguessyou'reprettygoodlookingtoo?"

Golly gee, this girl did not know how to handle unexpected flirts.

Mortified, An picked up the first item and silently hoped that she could magically identify something that would make both of them forget this disaster.

***

"Whew! All done!" Still red-faced, An slid the identified items back to her customer. "Thank you for your patronage and please come again!"

It was a quick trip, going to and from her closed shop. She'd appraised her crystals as she plucked each one off the shelves and marked a few she could rather do without. They'd serve better use dissolved into col, the small purple-haired girl thought, idly, as she made her way to a certain merchant's failing shop. With hours still left before the opening, Arabelle pulled a hood over her head and killed some time visiting a few NPC-ran shops she used to frequent.

She wasn't in a talking mood today, and she largely kept to herself until she returned to An's shop five minutes before opening and waited outside.

"An. Good evening." Upon spotting the shop owner, Arabelle pushed off the wall It had been a long, long while since they did anything together -- a time she didn't exactly mind -- but she'd kept in contact with An, sending the lower level tips and quest directions whenever she felt like it. Today was the time for An to return the favor. "I have a few things to junk sell." She followed the girl into her still cluttered shop and set four crystals down on the counter, along with her old T1 armor. "The crystals are my crafts. Listen to them as much as you like, but I want them junk sold before closing hours. There's a high-leveled quest that I have to take as soon as possible, and I'm using the col for buffs"

She leaned forward on the counter and smiled.

"Do your friend a favor. 95%/5% on the junk sale rates."

Why did she even bother?

Quarter before 8 PM. An walked the same old route from the town gate to the beaten-down building at the very center of the trade district. Maybe somewhere at the back of her head, she still held the small hope that she could dig herself out of this, even though she knew she'd be crushed with dejection after another night with no customers. Why did she even think someone who loathed her high school business classes would make it big in this scene--? Noticeably lacking in her usual energy, the girl neared her shop and mentally ran through her opening routine.

"Eh? Senpai?!"

Arabelle leaned against the exterior wall of her shop with her arms folded and an unusual air of boredom. She quickly approached at her friend's greeting and nervously eyed the old crumbling excuse of the building, playing with the irrational fear that it would somehow collapse in on itself if Arabelle pushed against it too hard. "Were you waiting for long? I'm so sorry! Please, come in!"

She almost couldn't believe it. A customer? And Arabelle, of all people? Her hands trembled with excitement and maybe a whole docket of pressure as she unlocked the door.

An ran about her own shop, almost stumbling about her own messes and momentarily forgetting the next steps in her own routine, and shoved a couple bits and bobbles into a crate before stacking another, heavier one on top of it. She stood back, biting her lip. Yeah-- looks a little less cramped than before! An returned to the counter and looked down at the items her friend had laid down on it. Crystals and an entire light armor set. "Hey, are you sure?" She pointed at the pretty black-and-green uniform. "I... thought it looked pretty on you-- but more importantly! Wasn't this what you were wearing during that event? What are you using now?

"A-actually, nevermind! I'll sell these quick!" An's face heated up. It wouldn't do her well to bombard her first customer in a long while with questions. She eyed the crystals, somewhat longingly, and impulsively chose one at random and pressed 'play' as she fed the others -- including the pretty armor set -- to the junk sale window. The gentle notes that filled the awkwardly quiet air were beautiful... she could listen to it any day, even. She had to wonder why Arabelle was junk selling such pretty crafts, but as she cut off the music to sell the last crystal, she sternly reminded herself: no questions!

"No, no," An waved her hands in front of her with a sheepish smile; it hadn't even taken her long to consider the amount, "You need the col, right? Let me help you as a friend and give you a hundred percent back! Um, and I wanted to give something back for all the quest help too... If you still want to pay me, then please just spread the word about my shop! I really need it."

The trade window flashed between them, showing a total amount of 1,100 col.

"Good luck on your quest, Arabelle. And um..." An turned red and found something else to fixate her stare on. "Thanks. Please come again."

So come back she did. An hour or so after store opening, Arabelle arrived, shrugging off her hood and holding up a large pouch filled to the brim with the goodies An seemed to have taken much interest in. Too bad none of them were for her. "Junk sell. Everything," she set down the bag, loosening the string as she laid it on its side, and out spilled a smorgasbord of performer crystals, "I've been moving around a lot lately, and I figured, why not declutter my inventory? Really sucks having to scroll through a bunch of items just to find the ones I need."

The small purple-haired girl stepped back, considering the failing merchant and her shop. She could save An's favors for some other time.

"Normal rates, An. Friendly as we are, you're still running a business." Arabelle tucked her hands behind her back and smiled politely. "Don't even try. I'll know if you slip me an extra coin."

  • 2 weeks later...

Another night, another three hours waiting at the counter to no avail—

"S-s-s-senpai?!"

Caught leaning with her head tilted back against the rest as if she'd been trying to count the dust on the ceiling (or was she?), An sat bolt upright in her seat. She quickly fixed her hair, her clothes, and tried to quell the blush that was beginning to warm her cheeks — all in front of Arabelle. Senpai showing up at her shop in less than a week? Did she die at some point and go to Heaven?!

"Aah! Junk sell! And normal rates! Yes, yes, of course, I'll get right to it!"

The failing merchant scooped up the items on the counter and would have retreated to a back room to squeal into a pillow if there was one, but there wasn't and she was stuck chewing down on her lip as she junk sold them. One by one. While the girl she liked sat across her and watched.

"Here," she opened a trade window and (hopefully) sent the right amount of col. "Thank you, nowI'mclosingupshopearly, sopleaseleavethepremisesifyoudon'thaveanymorebusiness!" So she could fangirl squeal into a pillow in peace. But oh no, that sounded as if she was chasing her senpai away! Nooooo!!! "Um, I'm really just in a bit of a rush. Please come again later... I-I mean, tomorrow! Or, uhhhh- whenever you need my services!"

Back again, and only after a few days after An lent her that LD trinket.

"Hey, An!" she chirped as she entered the shop with her reroll ticket in hand. Even for Arabelle, she was in an unusually good mood, and she presented the reason why at the counter: she summoned Amaterasu, set it down with care, and offered the [Easter Bunny's Favor] to the merchant. "Thanks for the trinket. It was really a lot of help with the loot. I even bought the item I wanted the most already! So I wanted you to do the honors. Will you?"

Then she suddenly snatched the ticket back.

"Oh, but first, I have things for you to identify, and even more to junk sell... aaand one thing to buy from your general stock." How could she have almost forgotten? Arabelle had dragged in a whole sack with her and she'd propped it against the counter, much to the merchant girl's (probable) horror. "Do as much as you can with your daily limit, then do the re-eval, alright? Best for last, I say~!"
