[F09-SP] Through the Fire and Flames -- <<Training Your Friend>>

Recommended Posts

NIGHT stretched, the trek around the floor beginning to take its toll on her. Usually, by now, something cool might occur. But that wasn't the case today. The inhabitants of this floor were usually keeping to themselves, the dog-eat-dog nature persisting only if the beasts could help it, which was close to never. As she traveled along, she watched Nyanko's movements, fine and graceful, and wondered what was going on in the cat's head.

Then she went back to her own thoughts. Rocks. Rocks. More rocks. Maybe a boulder here and there. NIGHT really wished there was more vegetation on this floor, and she clicked her tongue at the idea of not finding anything special after walking for so long. Where could her next cool hunt be?

As she made her way towards town, it dawned on her, for the answer of their next training spot was sitting right beside it. Mount Kazan.

Just barely up the mountain and the duo could already spot their competitors. Markhor goats. Once again, they met each other, face to face. NIGHT wasn't about to swear on eradicating as many of them as possible, but if the opportunity presented itself, at this point...

A noisy set of mews from Nyanko made their heads turn, as the adventurer was preparing to charge up an attack. Yeah, okay, thanks Nyanko, she thought half-heartedly, as she swung her blade at her opponents. Her slashes engulfed the area around them six-fold, the size of her blade mercilessly cutting through their hide. What could stop her, however, was a swift charge at her gut, knocking her backwards, sliding near the edge of the ledge they were on.

Crap, I gotta be careful. NIGHT hesitantly turned behind her, noticing how far the drop was. She would survive, the woman was sure, but it still made her nervous nonetheless.

Scrambling to her feet, she noticed one of the goats rushing in for a follow up attack -- one that would send her flying off the ledge, for sure. She had to do something drastic fast, and this was her best response -- dragging her blade upwards, she let loose a Tempest from her arsenal of sword arts, exhaling at the same time, letting a cool wind pass through her lips.

Stunned. Stunned. Stunned. None of the goats were free of sin, especially not the ones who tried to charge at her. As the main trio faded into nothingness, she noticed a fourth still standing, a little bit away from the others. Wait, there were four? NIGHT stepped away from the edge for safety, raising her sword defensively. Was Nyanko anywhere nearby?

He was -- right behind her, actually. He had time to sneak in between the adventurer's feet, in hiding and in admiration for her taking out the goats, probably.

As the goat came back to life from inanimation, it ran at NIGHT, swinging its horns, trying to knock the adventurer off-balance. The adventurer grinned, ducking as she raised her blade, edge pointed forward at the oncoming creature. The glow blinded both of them for a second, but the player knew what she had to do.

A swing across knocked the goat off balance, its side topping onto the ground. One stab to drag the woman across to reach it, then another slash down on her opponent. Two strikes, before the final draw, the blade of its foe clashing into its horns as the markhor scrambled to get up. Now it was down to the red, struggling to breathe as it did another lazy charge at the warrior, one she was quick to dodge, easily.

NIGHT raised her weapon again, in an effort to keep herself vigilant. She only wanted to be taught a lesson once before she could pick up its morals; in this case, it was not letting your guard down, and conserving enough energy to make safe bets.

But also, this goat was close to death. So who was she to hold back on it when the fruit's ripe for the taking? With the last of her resources, she poured her efforts into preparing for a continued sweep. In a flash, her spins began to bury her sword deep into the belly of the beast when it stood up, crushing its hopes and dreams of survival.

As its remains scatter into the wind, NIGHT sunk her sword into the dirt, watching the scatter of blue dust float over the landscape below. She would've pondered over the fragility of life, if it weren't for the loot window that appeared, disrupting her thoughts the moment she began getting philosophical. Right, she was here for a task, and she was running of daylight with every passing second.

Picking up her weapon, she turned around, ready to herd Nyanko along. The kitten was in mid-walk, standing motionless and surprised when his gaze met his owner's.

If he was tracking her, he would've been ready to pounce, right? That should've made sense to anyone who's vaguely interested in cats. NIGHT pulled out her cat toy again, crouching down and waving it around, trying to provide her kitten with the satisfaction of the kill.

Instead, Nyanko toppled over, rolling around on the rocky floor. His bright eyes only left her gaze when the toy was on his snout, and NIGHT sighed, after a minute of trying to get her familiar to train. "That's alright, I guess," she commented, waving the feather wand away and scratching at his chin. He purred a gentle hum, tiny paws holding onto her finger, never wanting to let go.

"But we gotta," she replied, easing up on her tickles. Nyanko beeped back, his grip slipping as NIGHT attempted to get up. The kitten energetically followed in suit, rising and trotting behind the adventurer as she continued her ascent up the mountain.

NIGHT wasn't one to share her thoughts much, but the trek up was long and monotonous, so she figured she'd have something on her mind, while trying to keep steady during her journey upwards.

Her first was what her friends were up to. She hadn't exactly seen them in a while. Noctua and Koga were certainly a fine pair, she mused, and wondered how they spent their time together. Didn't they also have a shop together as well? Maybe those were the tell tale signs she should've picked up on long ago.

Speaking of which, Yukiro was also one to wonder about. NIGHT had hoped she hadn't left the guy crushed under the weight of his own emotions, but life found a deafening way to tell her otherwise. She found her fingers around her wrist as she thought on this, sighing tiredly. It's no fun letting someone down like that; she just didn't have the skill to do it gently.

Yukiro... also had taken a liking to Tala. It was interesting to think that Koga's little sister would be the eye of his affection. If she was anything to go by, he should do well with her by his side. The girl seemed to be nice to talk to, and NIGHT definitely enjoyed her company. Maybe she would be the key to getting the boy to relax a bit.

Couples, couples... Didn't Randal also have a girlfriend? Lost on the outside, stuck not knowing what happened to the fate of her loved one... NIGHT's found herself choked at the thought of it all. A hand placed to the mountain face beside her, as she continued her trek up the slope. Gods, she couldn't imagine what it must be like to be her. While she had spent the last two years forging contacts with other players, she felt a bit thankful she hadn't anyone to worry about too much.

... Except her mom, of course...

To say that she missed her mother was a bit off from the mark. It wasn't so much of missing, since they had a tumultuous relationship beforehand. But she didn't want her to worry about her only child being lost somewhere, trapped and unable to speak to her. It wasn't on purpose. Not this time.

Her hands began to clam up thinking about this. NIGHT tried to control her breathing, staggered, recalling her face and her mannerisms. So, so beautiful, her mother did try to keep her youth and beauty alive, but it was a struggle putting up with the woman beneath the mask. Expectations, instructions and so much more. The player shuddered, trying to keep her eyes on the road, and her mind off reality, just a little more.

She took notice to another flat ledge of a platform they could rest at. It would still take a moment's journey to get there, but at least Nyanko could finally stop bearing his paws into the soil.

Where was she? Couples? Ah, yes. If it weren't for her preferences, maybe she would've taken Yukiro up on his offer. But the thought of a relationship at all was terrifying. How could one put their whole trust in another? She'd seen the torn and sick souls back at the Town of Beginnings, the seedy underbelly of the city on top of its pleasant facilities. It wasn't a miracle that she was still walking today, rather, the miracle laid in her mental health and sanity that kept her going still.

Talk about how one could spend two years in a city where they had nothing, and you'd end up with the first floor. Sure, there used to be leaders who'd try to keep everyone reassured and safe, but soon the refugees split into factions. When no one kept the group together, the whole team fell apart, and then...

... Another day. NIGHT was doing something now. She'd hold herself to it.

Who knew Mount Kazan was so accommodating?

It was a jest, of course, as NIGHT began to feel the heat bear down on her, Nyanko not looking to well for his troubles either. As the two stopped for a rest, she brought out some water -- a bottle for her, and a bowl's worth for her kitten. With a tilt of her head, she chugged down the liquid, taking large gulps as her familiar took tentative licks instead. When the adventurer had emptied her container, she watched it shatter with a crunch, smashing it in her hand.

On the other hand, she took back her kitten's bowl when it was empty, filling it with food instead. "You've gotta be hungry by now," she stated, portioning out the meat in the paper package, much to Nyanko's vocal delight. When the cat began his feast, NIGHT brought out the feather wand from earlier, setting it down beside his bowl. He took a glance at it, before returning to his meal, nonchalant about the object, and NIGHT smiled. By now, it was enough for her if he just got used to seeing it at all.

After his meal, Nyanko was up for some play time, it seemed. While NIGHT was cleaning and returning the bowl to her inventory, he pawed and chewed on the feathers that were only laying on the floor, unmoving. What a strange, energetic cat. She pet him gently, before waving the toy around. At least he was up for playing now.

"It's a little strange, Nyanko," she chided gently, watching as he jumped up to grab the toy. "Shouldn't you be conserving energy at this point of the day?"

The cat didn't respond, too focused on catching the enigmatic colourful feathers. She chuckled, as his head continued bobbing up and down and all around. At last, she let him have his catch, grabbing the feathers by his two paws, nibbling at the stick with his fangs. "Awww... Good job!"

NIGHT ran her fingers over his fur some more, before deciding they should head onwards, storing the toy away, much to Nyanko's disappointment.

Perhaps, if NIGHT was a little more aware, she would've realized that her greatest skill was probably not as great as an opener in combat as she thought it would be.

Instead, her visceral cuts struck true to her enemies consistently, and this was going according to plan, yes. However, the moment she made herself known and gave her enemy the chance to strike back... that was a folly whose onus was on her, and her alone. With a swing, one of the lava elementals she was going up against struck her hard into her arm, scathing and charring her arm, never mind her armour. She winced, after jumping backwards, shaking the pain away. Every strike was a reminder that there was a better move she could take to keep her out of harm's way, and death's grasp.

She glanced behind her, to Nyanko, who was watching from a distance away. As long as he was safe from the elementals and their fire...

Prime example of why NIGHT should be paying more attention in combat. Let's go over the facts:

  1. When she'd looked away for a split second, an elemental had followed up on her with a gut punch, scalding her stomach and leaving her breathless.

  2. Trying to stop herself, she sank her blade into the dirt, almost hitting Nyanko who was near her at the time.

  3. Her Tempest had shocked and slayed only two of her opponents, leaving the other two she'd encountered early open to attacking her.

  4. She was definitely running out of options with her limited energy pool.

NIGHT cursed, and sucked on the side of her cheek, annoyed. She continued to fiddle with the grasp on her blade. It wasn't going to be easy dealing with two enemies when she was on her last legs. Was she going to have to abscond again?

Maybe, if luck was on her side, she could take out at least one of them before considering that option.

Not even. The Lava Elementals weren't going to give her the time of day for it. Ducking and weaving through the blows, their liquidish forms only served to heat her blade up further, distorting Doombringer's form slightly and leaving it with a char. NIGHT sucked in air in frustration, continuously trying to swipe at them with her sword. It only helped that, since she was on the attack, her opponents weren't capable of striking back either. The player continued to curse anyway, not wanting her friend's hard work to be moulded by creatures unknown on the field.

Taking a bit of a retreat, she sighed, wondering if it was a good move to abscond. If her calculations were right, it would be better if she just hung onto waiting for her energy to restore, before unleashing an attack to decimate all her foes at once. That would be her plan then -- either go big, or go home (metaphorically).

Okay then. On the count of three. One -- Ow! Hey!

If the Lava Elementals weren't working in tandem earlier, well, they were now. She deftly blocked a blow that was coming for her, the firey, goopy fist slamming solidly into her blade's side, warping the metal underneath it. She hissed, trying to break free from the hold, when the other blindsided NIGHT with a warm, seething punch, scarring her cheek and taking a chunk out from her health.

Dammit, dammit, dammit--

The heat would subside, she knew that, and the system wasn't going to give anyone long-lasting damage to their physical self. But damn, did that blow hurt. She cursed, abandoning her count, and ran off down the mountain instead. Sheathing her blade, she picked up Nyanko, who was concerned by her feet, and left her opponents to eat her dust as they chased after her. If all she had to do was buy time, then that's what she would do.

The race was on! With NIGHT in the lead, her little meower Nyanko at the front seat, squeaking for instructions, we have team Darksiders, outrunning today's challengers!

Right behind them, the dastardly devils, is team Scorchfire! Consisting of two magical creatures, bodies composed entirely of flame and living magma, these figments work hard to defend their territory up Mount Kazan. The chase was on when NIGHT had issued the guards a challenge, setting their friends on fire -- metaphorically of course! -- and turning them to dust, this time literally! Of course our defendants would be mad, but what they weren't expecting, was a race for the ages!

Oh, here comes the curved slope! Nyanko's squeaking makes it easier for NIGHT to process what's happening in the world around her -- at least that's what my informant tells me! And she makes the turn with a skid -- careful where that foot goes! She nearly went right off the ledge with that one!

And what about our friends back home representing our fiery mountain of death itself? Oh, it looks like they made the turn just fine as well! Good job, amigos! Looks like they're gaining on her; with that awkward stumble earlier, NIGHT seems to be losing her lead! But her two feet keep on going, she's maintaining the distance between her foes real well!

In fact, check that out! With craftsmanship by Bahr himself, NIGHT's threads of dexterity shine when Lava Elemental #1 takes a brilliant swing at her -- and she's gone! The crowd goes wild at where she's been, but the whole time, our adventurer has only been ducking! What a shock! What quick reaction speed! You'd think Lava Elemental #3 had also learned this lesson, and he swings twice, one at her and one below! Oh. but NIGHT stuns them both by side-stepping completely out of range! Will they ever catch up to her? The tension is excruciating!

NIGHT was almost out of breath at this point. She wasn't built for speed so much as she was for stamina. Well, wearing her equipment made her that way, at least. There was no way she'd be able to last any more running by now. But watching her energy bar, she waited until the last tick dropped in, before skidding to a halt, near the original ledge she'd fought the markhor goats on.

Wait. I'd seriously gone this far down? Okay, that's not fair anymore.

As she dropped Nyanko to the ground, she brandished her blade from her sheathe, frenzied, slamming its edge into the ground. It hit nothing, of course, but that wasn't her intended move. Swapping her grip on the sword backwards, she rushed up against one of the elementals and bashed the glowing light into its head. NIGHT felt its liquid scorch her hand through her gloves, but the searing heat was nothing compared to her joy of watching her opponents finally fade away into nothing.

"Haah-- hahah..." NIGHT was basically gasping for air by now. Toppling onto the ground on her butt, she laid her blade to the ground beside her, calling Nyanko close. She brought out another bottle of water, taking sips from it as her cat rushed over, nuzzling up to her hand for affection. Cute, but NIGHT wasn't up to adorableness right now. She just wanted some rest.

Laying down, she watched Nyanko move over to check if she was doing alright. She was, but the adventurer appreciated the attention anyway. Petting the cat on the back, she brought out her cat toy, just for kicks to see if her kitten would respond.

The joke was on her, because it did. Her kitten was fully engaged with the colourful feathers, dancing around in the air once again, and lunged at them relentlessly. Joke's on the elementals from earlier, the joy of feeling them vanish from the face of Aincrad couldn't beat the joy she felt watching Nyanko enjoy himself.
