Oscar awoke to a pounding headache. He rolled over and tried to lift his hands to his face. He found they they were bound by a leather strap. What happened? The last thing he remembered was being contracted to deal with some bandits. A simple enough quest, all things considered. But once he'd reached the designated location on Floor 3... Nothing. He looked up towards the ceiling and groaned, his blurry vision clearing up slowly. The red text manifested before his eyes. Escape.

Oscar hopped to his feet and started looking around. His gear had been taken and he was trapped inside of a cramped cell. His hands were tied and the gate looked sturdy. In the distance, he could just barely make out the glimmer of Chaos Eater's blade poking out of a crate. With no other options, Oscar decided to start pounding on the gate. As he did, he felt the gate shift awkwardly. He inspected the hinges and noticed that they were almost rusted out. A few good smacks and the gate would tumble to the ground. It would probably attract the attention of the guards, but that was neither here nor there. He needed to get out of here.

Oscar grasped hold of the gate firmly and began to shake it violently. The hallway was filled with the loud clanging of metal on metal. He heard footsteps coming down the hall. Two bandits stepped into his view, both sneering at him. "Oh you want out? Well too bad! You couldn't break down those cages if you banged on them all night!" Oscar said nothing. He didn't want to call attention to his ticket out of here. Clearly they put far too much faith in the strength of the metal bars separating them. That was their folly. The two of them laughed boisterously and headed back down the hall. Once they were gone, Oscar continued working on the door. He saw the hinges beginning to give. It wouldn't be too much longer and then he could make a beeline for his gear. Those two wouldn't stand a chance against him if he were properly-armed. They should have taken better care of their prison. If they had, they wouldn't be moments away from a bloodbath.

Oscar was getting closer now. His constant barrage upon the gate had the hinges hanging on by a thread. A few more good bashes and he would be free. There was something about those bandits that just set him off. He really wanted to go from top to bottom of this prison and kill them all. But he also wanted to go home. And that overrode his desire to go nuclear on these fools. But for now, he needed a break. He had to conserve his energy for one good bash. With any luck that was all it would take. He needed to be quick though. The sound of the door being smashed open would assuredly attract the attention of the guards down the hall. He needed to be geared back up and armed before they came to investigate. He was regretting even taking on this quest, but he would clear it all the same. There was something about being trapped that brought out the beast inside of a man.

Oscar was ready. The gate was weak. He rushed forward and slammed his shoulder into the hard metal. He winced as the metal dug into his shoulder. The gate gave a bit, but it needed more to fall. He took a step back and rushed at the gate again. More progress, but still the gate remained attached to the wall. He stepped all the way back to the wall, putting his back flush with the cool, damp stone. Then he dashed forward again, this time leaping up and drop kicking the gate. The metal bars gave way and Oscar was able to send it flying from its hinges. Oscar landed hard, but the gate landed harder. The sound of metal clanging on stone filled the corridor. Though he hurt, Oscar didn't have time to lick his wounds. He scrambled over to the crate containing his belongings and sliced through the binds with Chaos Eater. He wouldn't have long. The guards would be coming down the hall at any moment to investigate the sound. He had to rearm himself.

Thankfully, all of Oscar's belongings were in the crate. He quickly donned his armor and equipped his weapon. He then scarfed down a selection of hot dogs to buff up for what he knew was about to be a nonsense quest. He consumed several food items, consumables that would make his escape that much easier. He removed his overcoat and slid on the Gloves that Bahr had crafted for him so long ago. The buffs lined up nicely on his bar. He would just have to explain to the client that he didn't exactly know what he was getting himself into when he took on this quest. They shouldn't be too upset considering that their order was still filled. He heard footfalls from down the hall. The guards were coming. He readied Chaos Eater. He had no idea how strong they would be, but he assumed he'd be in for a real brawl nonetheless. He steeled himself and planted his feet. It was time to do this thing.

The guards rounded the corner just as Oscar finished arming himself. They looked shocked to see him both out of his cell and with his axe in hand. He gave them a mischievous grin and rushed forward. He bashed one of the Guards with his shoulder, causing it to shatter like glass instantly. These guys certainly didn't have a lot of health. But they made up for it by being evasive little assholes. He sliced at the remaining guard twice but, even with Oscar's increased accuracy, it was able to dodge both of his blows. But it was caught on the back foot and because of that, its counterattack missed Oscar by a mile. The guard lashed out, fear blazing in its eyes. It knew what would happen if Oscar got a clean hit off on it. And it desperately didn't want that to happen. Oscar wondered where all that smack talk from a minute ago had gone.

The Guard had managed to back itself into a wall. It was so focused on staying away from Oscar's rampage that it wasn't paying attention to what was behind it. The sudden contact with the cool stone caused the Guard to leap forward in shock. Just the opening Oscar had been waiting for. A single, powerful shoulder bash had been enough to send the guard slamming back into the wall. It shattered on contact with the stone surface, leaving Oscar alone in the corridor. He needed to find a way out. But he also needed to remain unseen if at all possible. Now would be a good opportunity to collect some information for his client. He surmised by keeping to the shadows, he would be able to listen in on the Bandits' conversations and see if any of it would be useful. It probably wouldn't. It seemed this whole quest was set up as one big escape room anyway.

Oscar crept around the dank, dimly lit corridors as silently as he could. He gripped Chaos Eater just below the blade to prevent it from clanking on his back as he walked. He heard voices off in the distance and ducked into an alcove as they grew louder. Soon enough, two guards walked past him. They were so focused on navigating the darkness with a single torch, that they didn't see Oscar off to the side. There was only one problem. They were heading towards the prison bloc. If they got there and saw that his cell was empty, there would be a problem. So he did the only logical thing. He waited until they had just past them and then swung his axe like a baseball bat at their unprotected necks. They didn't even see it coming. Their bodies shattered like glass, leaving no evidence behind save for their torch. Oscar made a point to snuff it out and place it out of the way in the alcove so as to not arouse suspicion.

Progress was slow, but it was progress. It seemed like every step was met with a bandit patrol. He had to make a judgement call as to whether their patrol would take them towards the cells or not. Some he had to deal with, others he merely slipped past. There certainly were a lot of convenient alcoves for him to duck into. The guards also had a fairly predictable patrol route. This made slipping past them a little easier. But he wasn't really any closer to finding the exit. Nor was he any closer to finding out any information about this place. He had to focus on not being seen, something that didn't come easily to him. It would be much easier to just rampage through the halls like a bull in a china shop, but he figured his energy wouldn't hold out if he did that. Best to take things tactically. Slow and steady. Once he was out he could go on a rampage if he wanted to.

The patrol routes were getting a little more complex. His movement was almost completely stalled. He hung out behind some crates as he watched a pair of guards with interlocking routes. He was sure that if he took one out and they didn't meet in the middle, the suspicion of the other would be roused and the alarm would be sounded. He definitely didn't want to try and navigate this place when it was on high alert. He'd need to be quick, precise, and silent to make it past this roadblock. One of the guards patrolled near him. He seized that opportunity to dispatch that guard and deal with his torch. Then, silently made his way down the hall and caught the second guard under the chin with his axe as he rounded the corner. With that issue dealt with, he'd be able to move forward now. He took the suddenly more intricate patrols as a sign that he was nearing the exit.

As much as he wanted to hurry on and find the way out, there was still the issue of finding the way out. Oscar couldn't very well sprint through the corridors in the hopes that he would stumble upon the exit. He had to restrain himself. He had keep moving forward carefully. While he was sure that he could handle whatever guards came his way, it was less about the guards themselves being threatening and more about him trying to navigate a place with no map data while being hunted. As of now, they didn't know he had escaped. It was in his best interest to keep it that way. Just a few steps at a time. Take out the guards one by one as needed. The system was working up til now. It didn't make much sense of mess with it. At least until he needed to. But with enough luck and caution, he hoped that he really wouldn't need to mess with it.

The patrol paths were becoming increasingly ridiculous. Not only did they have intersecting paths, they also had guards stationed at regular intervals, watching all the exits to the corridor. So instead of being able to sneak past, Oscar had to meander his way through the room, careful not to alert anyone, and figure out the pattern in its entirety. Once he had done this, it became a matter of dispatching the guards in the correct order so as not to rouse suspicion or raise the alarm. He found that taking out a patrolling guard and then following its route in reverse to take out the stationary ones out of their line of sight worked wonders. Once he'd cleared about half the room, the other half was much easier to deal with. He was surprised at exactly how much killing was involved in this stealth mission. But having the option to "brute force" ones way through was what made it fun, no?

Oscar was about to move on to the next room when a loud siren sounded through the complex. He swore under his breath and ducked behind some crates as an entire platoon of guards rushed past. A guard must have patrolled through the prison bloc and found his empty cell. All he could do was hope that he was near the exit. After the guards rushed past, Oscar decided to make a break for it. If luck was on his side, he'd find the way out at any moment. If not, then this whole ordeal was about to get ten times more annoying. Oscar stuck his head out from behind the crates. He couldn't see or hear anything. Hopefully that was a good sign. He then slowly crept out from behind the crates and slipped through the doorway that the platoon of guards had come from. So far, so good. He just needed to keep this up a bit longer.

"There he is!"

Or not.

A mistake was made. Was it Oscar's for not having the presence of mind to leave a body double in his cell? Or was it the guards for having the audacity of attacking him? When Oscar dispatched them both easily with a single Trample Act, it became clear which side was in the wrong. They shattered like glass before they even got the opportunity to attack him. Perhaps the only saving grace here was the fact that these enemies were so soulcrushingly weak that it didn't take much at all to dispatch them. So much the better. Oscar didn't know how much more he would be able to take if a stiff breeze couldn't do these guys in. The coast seemed to be clear for now, so he pushed onward. Hopefully, he'd managed to juke the bulk of the guards by being "behind enemy lines" so to speak. But he doubted he was that lucky.

Or was he? As Oscar rounded a corner, he found the main gate to the fortress. It was wide open, despite their captive being on the loose. Perhaps the bandits were so busy trying to find him that they hadn't thought to close the gate. Or perhaps not. Oscar could just make out a silhouette on the drawbridge. It seemed to be a lot bulkier than the other guards. It must be their boss. It was a good plan. Leaving the gate wide open to make Oscar make a break for it. The moment he did, the boss would be there to apprehend him and throw him back into his cell. The only problem was that if the grunts were any indicator, the boss wouldn't be that strong either. Or he could be extremely powerful. Oscar was forced to take that risk though. Either he'd have an epic boss fight to make this whole ordeal worth it, or he would be able to go home. Either way, he would be quite satisfied.

Screw Dimension vs Bandit Warden ID: 132564 BD9 Deal 217 DMG

Bandit Warden 0/100 HP | 30 DMG | 2 EVA | 15 MIT

Oscar dashed out of the bandit hideout like a bat out of hell. The Bandit Warden was his target. He couldn't tell exactly how much health the boss had, but he would figure that out in short order. He struck the Warden hard. Before it could even react, Chaos Eater had cleaved straight through his chest. To add insult to injury, the attack even applied a Bleed proc. Not that it was even remotely necessary. Before Oscar could even blink, the Warden shattered like glass. Floor 3 stretched out in front of him and Oscar wasn't about to let his opportunity go to waste by thinking to much. He kept moving, sprinting away from the hideout as if his life depended on it. It didn't. But they sure as hell weren't going to make him miss dinner. Leeroy and Jenkins would absolutely never forgive him for not being around to make their food for them.

Speaking of, he heard a loud bark behind him. In his haste to escape, he had completely forgotten about his familiar. Thankfully, the dog didn't get himself captured too. It seemed he was patrolling just outside the walls of the stronghold, waiting for Oscar to make his escape. Once he was far enough away to not have to worry about any bandits running him down, Oscar stopped and sat down on a rock. Leeroy immediately launched into an onslaught of slobber and licking the likes of which Oscar had never once been victim of. He could only laugh as the hound knocked him to the ground and made sure to apply a liberal coat of saliva to the entire surface area of his face. Finally, when Leeroy tired himself out, Oscar pushed the hound off of him and rose to his feet once more. "I missed you too buddy," he began. "Let's never do that again."

Oscar needed to hurry on back to town. If the bandits knew he was gone, they'd definitely be searching for him right about now. As bad as getting caught in the stronghold would have been, he definitely didn't want to have to fight tooth and nail just to make it back to town. He had a lead. It was a good idea to keep it. Oscar broke into a sprint yet again. He could only hope that he ran into someone that he knew. But that wasn't altogether likely. Besides, did he really need help slaughtering some bandits if it came to that? Bahr would never let him live it down if he came asking for help dealing with some 20HP bandits. Best to avoid the fight altogether and head on home. He doubted they could chase him into the safe zone. He even further doubted that they would be able to follow him up to a higher floor. Just had to keep running.

Oscar sprinted through the gates like a runner sprints over a finish line. He dropped his axe and rested his hands on his knees, gasping for air. He hoped he hadn't left much of a trail back here. But even if he did, it wasn't as if bandits could even attack the main settlement. Once he caught his breath, he picked up his weapon and headed for the teleporter. He and his familiar stepped onto the platform and dialed in his desired location. In a flash of white light, he was gone. Happy that ordeal was over with, Oscar didn't even report in to his "client." At this point, he was almost certain that the "client" was in on the whole charade. And making himself known to the NPC would only further complicate things. He definitely didn't want to open any windows for bandits to be able to attack the town or anything. Best to just slip away unseen while he still had the opportunity to do so.

Oscar landed in Deepedge, happy as a lark. Leeroy and Jenkins ran circles around their master's legs. Being back up on Floor Seven only meant on thing to them: food. And Oscar wasn't about to deny them. To deny his familiar meant he would be denying himself a much needed repast and an even more needed rest. The whole ordeal with the prison had been more draining than he'd expected it to be. Between the headache and the mental strain, Oscar wanted nothing more than to head home, eat, and go to sleep. But first, he made a stop by a nearby stream and splash some cold water into his face. That seemed to perk him up a bit, allowing him to make the trek through the mountains a bit more easily. He hurried on, but didn't run. The terrain wouldn't allow that. The best he could do was a brisk walk. But soon enough, Oscar found himself safe and sound at home. Free, happy, and ready to nap.
