[E3-SP-F11] On a Suspicious Silver Platter pt. 2

Recommended Posts

The virtual sun had just barely peeked out from the horizon when she pulled on the military coat of her armor and fixed her purple hair into an elegant braided updo, complete with a large red ribbon. She clipped An's item onto her belt and swapped a teleport crystal and a set of keys into her battle-ready inventory. With her menus still open at their lowest brightness, she scrolled up and down and ticked off her list of needed buffs as she tiptoed to the other side of the room and reached out blindly until her hand came into contact with the smooth folds of her cloak.

Wait, which one was hers? There were two slung over the back of her room's only chair (a little disappointing, she knew, but she'd moved the other one down to the second-floor room some few days ago) and it was too dark to tell.

Eenie meenie miney moe.

Arabelle grabbed one at random and locked her shop behind her. The small purple-haired girl shivered in the cool early morning air and rushed down the streets of Taft. Before she reopened her inventory for her buffs, she would pull her cloak around her and—

Oopsie daisy.

Whatever, she could do without the distraction of a cloak flapping about while she fought.

Her displeased huff said her feelings on the matter were the complete opposite. Arabelle pulled the large red cloak off of her, folded it neatly as she walked, and tapped an option that dismissed the item into her inventory. As its figure shimmered into nonexistence, she faced the [Garden] in front of her.

Here she was again.

And early in the morning this time. The rest of Aincrad had yet to wake up, but the Easter Bunnies hopping about every available space in the orchard were busy as always. Actually— were there more than last time? They looked like they'd multiplied overnight. If they weren't so cute, Arabelle would've called it an infestation.

She materialized her scythe and picked the first unlucky bunch for the day.

Let's assume this was an infestation. Then there would be only one way to quell their numbers efficiently, right?

With a burst of energy that sent the nearby bunnies running, she raced forward and allowed her body to flow into the motions of a [Sword Art].

Her scythe had cleaved through their small figures as if they were nothing more than cotton. On one Easter Bunny, noticeable black marks crawled out of a red gash she'd inflicted, etching itself onto pure white fur and eating away at its HP bar as soon as her attack ended. Like foreign black blood invading its veins and corrupting it from the inside; the rabbit thrashed about to no avail.

Blight was a pretty enhancement.

Arabelle shifted her weight beneath her, capitalizing her momentum to spin her weapon around and release another wave of attacks. Two torn apart, including the bunny inflicted with Blight. Pity, but she supposed she would just have to learn what the full duration of Blight looked like on a stronger mob after this event ended. The remaining two, meanwhile, had been quick to surround her before her blade could reach them and as she nimbly leaped out of the way of one attack, the other was there to meet her with its claws bared.

As if they stood a chance! The girl's lips curled into a grin as she shook off the attacking Easter Bunny and tossed it back into her range. She readjusted her grip and her fingers tapped once, twice, on the handle of her scythe. At her silent prompting, Amaterasu ignited. A tremendous flame of shadows and an all-consuming greed devoured the Easter Bunnies' small figures as she lashed out, determined to take them both down with this final [Sword Art].

When her weapon reached the end of its final arc, the flames subsided and left only glittering fragments of the Easter Bunnies' models and the bunches of col, chocolate eggs, and other drops in its wake. Twirling her scythe between her fingers as it vanished into a pool of swirling shadow where it would remain until she summoned it for combat again, Arabelle strolled forward and collected all of the shinies she could see.

Low energy. Back to regular gathering to preserve her productivity as droplets of blue gradually replenished the status bar in her peripherals. That was the routine.

Arabelle wanted to hiss out a complaint, but there was no point if nobody was around to listen. Wasn't talking to herself — out loud — just rather strange? She focused on a small point in the ground and mentally reached back to flip a small switch in her head, then all of a sudden, the early morning scene looked a bit dull. The sky, in the middle of transitioning from night to day, was a light gray. The grass at her feet and the trees in the distance were an even darker shade. In her eyes, only the objects the game marked as 'important' were wrapped in a resplendent glow, their colors representing the objects' classification.

Outwardly, her eyes were a bright and burning red.

Arabelle had no idea why she was making an effort to move quietly. She was as alone as she can be, and though the little bunnies fled whenever she drew too close to them, she wasn't too interested in avoiding that outcome. She could always just chase after them like the hungry wolf she was in their terrified eyes, and catching a few wouldn't be difficult. Perhaps it was the surrounding area's silence?

The [Garden] wasn't entirely still. Every so often, a breeze would gently ruffle the leaves of the trees in the orchard and toss about the blades of grass and wildflowers in the open area to its side. Small tufts of green shook as the busy Easter Bunnies dug in and out of tunnels with chocolate eggs in their paws. She snuck close enough to nudge one with her foot, peering down at it with red eyes, and it scampered away in fright.

She gathered the shinies it left behind and moved on.

Oh! She had a thought. It was akin to the weird feeling you got when you visit a place that's usually teeming with people and all the noise they carried with them and find it empty. What were the words for it...? A place that was once full of life was now empty of it... and dead. As if anything more than tiptoeing about break an unwritten rule and awaken something in the 'dead' that everyone feared. And she would then be the only person around to see it.

Hah. Just kidding.

It was a looong ways to Halloween and ever since ghosts became a common type of mob, they lost all their luster.

God, what a tangent that was. This was looking more and more like a stream of consciousness.

She felt a little terrible kicking bunnies around even in her out-of-combat gathering, so she found the last bunch in a normal manner. Finding yellow glows all bundled together in one spot, Arabelle approached the source and parted tall blades of grass to reveal a cluster of chocolate eggs among a patch of herbs.

Energy back to full! But oh no— where were all the bunnies?

Arabelle deactivated her [Detection] to be greeted with a much-welcome amount of color returning to her surroundings and a less-than-welcome lack of Easter Bunnies. There were significantly less of them than when she started and she wouldn't attribute the decrease in number to her combat from earlier either; she'd only killed four. She reached out her hand and from shadows gathering and pooling into an orb at a point above the center of her palm, Amaterasu formed and solidified. Her dominant hand closed around the handle of her weapon, sliding further up to the scythe's head, and her other hand followed.

Where~ are~ you~?

She disappeared into the orchard and spotted a group of four rushing to hide behind an apple tree. The location wasn't optimal but, good enough. As flames burst down the length of her weapon, the small girl catapulted herself forward and began with a strong offensive.

The flames and fanfare from the first [Sword Art] had hardly died down when she poured another chunk of energy into her weapon and unleashed it once again. Arabelle moved past a large tree that had gotten in the way and twirled gracefully on her foot, carrying Amaterasu with her on a flaming arc to deliver one final blow.

...for three out of four rabbits. The small purple-haired girl halted her momentum and peered past the glittering remnants of the mobs' models, trying to find the last. It was, perhaps, not the best idea to engage in combat where her opponents had lots of cover but where else would she have found the mobs? She wandered forward a little further, picking up the materials and items the Easter Bunnies dropped and at the sound of leaves rustling, she stuffed the rest into her inventory without much care about the order.

Arabelle swung her scythe up but was unable to guard against the vengeful little rabbit's bite.

It didn't let go until she backed up and slammed her arm, Easter Bunny along with it, against a nearby tree. Apparently, she'd done the large trunk enough force that she felt its branches shake above her and large fruits dropped all over the surrounding area... and one plopped right on the vicious mob's head. It released her with a squeal of surprise. She resumed her grip on Amaterasu and swiped at the ball of fluff as it tumbled to the ground — however, once again, it proved to be a little more nimble than expected.

The white bunny found its footing and scampered away and out of her weapon's reach. It stopped just out of her range, looking back at her and sniffing the air as if to gauge her next move, then it turned tail and disappeared into the brush. Attacking clearly wasn't the first thing in its mind now.

Arabelle stayed still and silent, her scythe poised to attack. She listened to the ambient sounds of the orchard all around her, looking for peculiarities amid the usual noise. Probably a scuffle there, or the brush shaking a little more than it would have from the occasional slight breeze blowing around her, or the scratching of a certain rabbit's claws. She liked to think her ears were at least keen enough for this. She was a pianist, an international achiever, and she would know how to pick sounds apart and distinguish even the most subtle differences.

But there was nothing.

Oh, so this was the annoying part she'd long anticipated. Every grinding event Arabelle had been to had at least one of these: mobs who were more trouble than they were worth. Her eyes flicked over to the status bars in her HUD. Still in combat, but the Easter Bunny was clearly not interested in attacking.

She didn't like playing the waiting game for long. Arabelle was naturally a little impatient, and even more so in a scenario wherein the opponent was literally one hit away from dying. So she flourished her scythe and wandered over to the middle of the small gap between the lines of trees she currently found herself in. Right now, she could:

a) Draw it out. She didn't have any Taunt but hey, stomping around too close to its hiding place should have it running in fear, right?

b) See if she could follow it into the brush.

c) Pull a Mishiro and just destroy the entire f-cking place because it was technically of no consequence.

Yep. Perfect. Arabelle kept her eyes on the bushes the rabbit had disappeared into as she held her weapon around her head and let it gather energy. She twirled it once, twice, then let it drop to her hands in a firm grip and rocketed forward in an explosion of black flame. Neither the tree trunks nor the material-bearing plants were spared as she spun in a 360, conducting her blade and its flames to raze everything around her.

What? Why was it only cute if she did it? So unfair!

Arabelle stood proudly amidst the wreckage, of the stumps of two trees which once bore apples, charred remains of nearby plants, and a strong smell of smoke. What was most important however, was the dead mob's data crystals floating up to and disappearing in the air and the semi-transparent window that had appeared to her shortly afterward with all of her drops.

Ahahaha~ she definitely caught it this time around.

That certainly showed those troublesome types of event mobs that she took no prisoners if she became impatient enough. The small purple-haired girl looked over the amount she had for today — not too bad, but yesterday, she had certainly done a lot better — and dismissed the window once she lost interest in it. Dematerializing her scythe, Arabelle moved away from that portion of the orchard and returned to the fields.

Arabelle:
Awake yet?
I wish you were here.
You should have seen me burning down some part of the [Garden] to kill an Easter Bunny.
But to be fair, the cowardly thing wouldn't stop hiding in the bushes! It was really getting on my nerves.

It was a little bit of a disappointment that the area immediately began repairing itself after she left. Not even a scrap of evidence would remain when the other players arrive. Nothing to marvel at, though Arabelle supposed she would just have received a fair share of disgusted stares and probably some bad rep.

What a careless waste of resources.

Like the materials in this area functioned the same as anything you would find in real life. People had the tendency to forget that. She wandered a little further from the orchard, her interest now snared by a couple of shinies she spotted amid the tall grass.

She found a pair of performer crystals with the previous haul too — just randomly lying on the grass next to the chocolate eggs. How convenient. Arabelle had scarcely dusted off her and part of her skirt when her [Detection] highlighted another bundle near her. She followed as if led by a string and scooped up five more sugary treats.

This was easy, wasn't it? All of a sudden, she understood why so many players opted to go the boring, gathering route. Fighting was fun! ...until the tables turned and you were stuck in a fight you've already been at for ages and forced to see it through to the end.

The orchard's self-restoration was halfway done by now and proved a rather interesting watch as she waited to recover her energy. Transparent 3D models rose from the tree stumps to its former full height and textures and colors followed the same route as branches and leaves grew from the structure. However, the burnt ground still remained.

Arabelle took out her scythe and moved to the other side of the [Garden], the one farthest from the orchard. The plants and vegetation here were not exactly placed in neat ordered rows, but the ones of the same type were at least grouped together, and wide grassy paths between the foliage were provided for both players and wandering mobs alike. Of course, it would then narratively follow that she spotted another group of Easter Bunnies on said grassy area.

Really, she thought they would have all gone off to hide.

Her gloved hand hovered over her message window, keeping it open as she inched a little closer.

Claude:
ಠ_ಠ
you're especially vicious today, aren't you

Her curiosity satisfied, she closed her hand into a fist, effectively dismissing the window. Resuming her grip on her scythe, the small purple-haired girl walked forward, sped up to a run once the bunnies started noticing her, and spun out an offensive that caught all but one who hopped too close into her range.

She spun her weapon and slammed its blunt end to the ground. Before the Easter Bunnies could surround her and make life extra difficult, she used Amaterasu as one of those... pole vaulting... thingies... and catapulted herself to the air, pulling it along with her as she sailed over two of the bunnies' heads. Arabelle landed gracefully on the ground behind the mobs and immediately spun on her heel to dole out another three slices.

Amaterasu's shadowy flames flickered at the corner of her vision, fizzling out as the [Sword Art] ended, but the sensation of the cool early morning air on her skin remained the same. It was growing warmer by the second now and the sky was turning brighter. She stepped to the side, evading the last Easter Bunny's attack and quickly picked up the loot left behind by the three mobs she just killed. Unfortunately, her harvest wasn't as bountiful as her previous.

And again, one mob remaining. Why did she always miss one? It shouldn't have been difficult to keep track of four opponents, despite their small sizes. She thought back to the unique accuracy enhancement she had wanted on her weapon but failed to attain with An's reidentification. Perhaps an item similar to the [Easter Bunny's Favor] would appear in a future event, but for the impatient girl, it couldn't happen soon enough. Arabelle pursed her lips, outwardly revealing just a little of her displeasure, and then she charged up her strongest single-target [Sword Art] and aimed at the cowering mob.

...Except that it somehow didn't kill it.

She was sure she'd cleaved right through its fluffy white head, but it survived. The Easter Bunny must have moved at the very last second and saved its skin (for now), and it now clung to a very small red droplet of its original HP bar.

How annoying. And how much could she have done by now if she'd felled her opponent in that previous attack? She could have simply dished out another AoE... even if she was only aiming to hit one target. Arabelle didn't bother, and neither did she have the energy to. Approaching the struggling white bunny, she partook in one brutal slam that crushed the mob's head under the blunt end of her scythe. Finally, its figure burst into millions of glimmering data shards and she was left standing with her scythe pressing down on a pile of col which had appeared on the same spot where the Easter Bunny died.

Arabelle noticeably brightened at the amount of shinies spread out before her and she immediately went to collect it. It wasn't a very impressive bunch of drops but it wasn't the worst either, and sometimes, she just had to take what she was given. As she was transferring the assortment of drops to her inventory, she made a mental note to herself to keep closer watch of the numbers.

The sun was rising and the little parties of adventurers were beginning to leave town for another productive egg hunt at the [Garden]. Well, they wouldn't be happy to know that some mysterious player/group of players had already beaten them out of half of it, and they were stuck spending the first hour waiting around for respawn timers and never quite experiencing the abundance of materials [Nature's Treasure] had advertised. Arabelle didn't want to give them a name and a face to blame and she didn't want to stick around as the place slowly grew more cramped with players wanting to take as much advantage of this event as possible, so she decided it was about time to pack up and leave.

Her ashen gaze swept through the [Garden] in one last search, but aside from the usual materials and chocolate eggs which she would resist the temptation to gather in favor of getting out of here quickly, she found nothing of interest. Disappointing. Wasn't this about time a treasure chest should show up?
