NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) NIGHT had been strange ever since the visit to the waterfall. It was clear to her familiar. Nyanko found himself calling for her, day and night at various occasions, wondering if he can get his owner to budge on the matter. Each time, her distant eyes would flicker to his own for a moment, caught off-guard by the sudden intrusion upon her silent contemplation. Then, she would pace over, lean down to reach out to him and give him gentle pets to his head. "There's nothing to worry about," she would echo, to his concern. "I'm just fine." Hollow words for a seemingly hollow person. So it was fitting that Nyanko found his owner walking around the dead this adventure, passing the glows and ghouls of blue and black. Along the trail of the Stygian river they followed, restless souls of the damned shrieking and pulling themselves out from the radiant water, pooling with dread. It mattered not to NIGHT how they looked like this stroll. What mattered more was how they bled for her. NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 Author #2 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) Her breath was just as haggard, just as scathing as her opponents' were. Their wails, screeches were unmatched by her silence, however, as she brought out her blade slowly from its sheathe, a dark shadow masking over her eyes as her gaze bore down upon them. What life was left in the player's disposition had been drained dry from her eyes. Tiredly, she settled on the closest figure as it started to lumber towards her, the river's sparkling blue liquid running down its form. Nyanko watched from the side as NIGHT struck first, sending two of the shambling figures back to their maker with a chain of two sword arts. Blue blood, if one imagined it, spilled and tumbled from the air back into the pool with a flurry of splashes and glimmer. One of the corpses drew close, just enough to strike once, but the player's armor sparked to life with a few small bolts of lightning, rendering the creature immobile for a spell. Its defenses now open, NIGHT kicked it away, continuing her onslaught against the pests that creeped towards her on her walk. NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) There were these various colored eggs that floated by on the river's current, Nyanko noticed, as he peeked out from the jacket he always found himself in. Perhaps those were why they were out on a walk for today. Colorful. Oh, but those were from the bodies of the figures that his owner had shoved into the water. The kitten glanced over to the side, eyes to solid ground. At least some had managed to remain within reach. With a resounding groan, two more of the corpses were wiped out, their figures falling back into the river, and Nyanko settled back into his pocket once more. Easy game for his master, especially when she was this unfazed. NIGHT seemed like she wore a look of nonchalance more than fear even at the sight of the horrific creatures, and he'd definitely seen how she'd reacted to much smaller, creepier, many-legged things. NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 Author #4 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) The kitten watched a system menu appear in front of NIGHT, as she looked over her rewards idly. Her index hovered over the close button, when something caught her attention, and it drifted over to underline the new item's listing as the player read it to herself. Then, with a reluctant hum, she sent the box away, pulling open her interface instead whilst trekking over to the side. Nyanko conceded that it was for the better, after watching the river with affection for a moment; NIGHT would be safer without any more opponents shuffling forward for a fight. The player shuffled over to a dent in the forest next to the river, taking a cautious seat on a mossy rock. A hand stuffed into her track suit pocket meant that Nyanko was wobbled gently for a moment. He hated that, but he kept his mouth shut. What came next was NIGHT leaning over to one side, picking up something from the dirt. Her brows furrowed for a moment, before the item shone with a vibrant light, the object in her hands being cast away. Nyanko wondered what she'd picked up. NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) Once she'd collected the last of the items, she dusted off her gloves to type. The kitten peered upwards, watching the different menus change. A message? Who was it to? Sometimes, Nyanko wished he could read. It would be lovely to understand what players were talking about, or reading sometimes. NIGHT finally let out a breath when she was done composing her message, letting her shoulders relax for a moment. Nyanko muffled a meek mew as he shared a glance with his owner, ready to receive yet another gentle set of pets on the head. As she smiled back, easing up on her stoic expressions, her hand stopped mid motion from reaching out to her familiar, the reply from her contact drawing her attention away instead. Dammit. His owner's scowl returned, and if Nyanko could swear, he might've. He watched NIGHT form another message, this one starting to seem much longer than the last. NIGHT 0 Posted April 8, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) A sigh and drooping shoulders. Nyanko let out a peep, tiny paws reaching out for his owner's grasp. Instantly, NIGHT seemed to perk up with curiosity and concern, wiping away any distinct signs of travesty on her face. "You're so noisy today," she commented, pulling the kitten out from her pocket for a moment. He let out a proper meow, this time, after being set on her lap. Reaching out his two front paws, Nyanko stretched, trying to get as much movement out of his system before crawling back into his owner's pocket. He always wondered why that was necessary, and if it was possible to just stay walking along the footpath just as his owner did. Well, no more complaints from him. A few gentle pets from NIGHT fussing over her little kitten and Nyanko was nestled back in his seat, his eyes curiously glossing over the scenery as they continued their journey forth. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #7 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) His owner's gaze had been clouded once again, Nyanko noticed, as they headed down the Stygian once more. From the river, another few creatures of the dead rose from their slumber, roused awake by the dreadfully loud footsteps of the player stepping forth. They crawled to the river bank on the opposite site, a safe distance away, but there were still some who'd managed to get their directions wrong, hauling themselves from the blue and into the way of NIGHT's path. She stopped in front of one. Spared it a long look. Nyanko looked back up to make sure the player was still present in the moment; it wouldn't be wise to be distant in the presence of such atrocities. Even the cerulean glow of the river couldn't rouse her addled, distracted mind. After a moment, she took a step back. Fished out her greatsword to tear the monster asunder with an art. Mechanical, lifeless steps. Which being was the real construct here? Spoiler ID: 140317 | BD: 7 (3, +4) | MD: 5 (8, -3) <<Calamity Disaster>> vs Apparition #1. 21 * 12 = 252 DMG Apparition #1 missed! NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Two more carried themselves away from the waters and onto the shores. Shambling, distorted figures glistening in the azure light. NIGHT simply carried on, ridding herself of the first obstacle in her path without hesitation nor mercy, watching the blue liquid of the dead continue to pour and splatter across the darkened rocky, mossy floor. She would've left a trail of cold blood had it not dissipated into ash in a matter of seconds. Her strikes against the other beasts were only auxiliary with her focus set on a single target in the moment. NIGHT seemed to switch gears when the next closest figure was an upright being, one much more suited to be a threat against her existence as it stumbled eagerly towards her. But instead of readying herself with an utmost caution or a thirst for the fight, she simply strolled towards it, stepping over the fading figure underneath her as had been expected of her. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Again, her blade was swung, shattering against the impeding form that reached out a limb to strike at her. Once more did the scatter of blue tear through the air, landing back into the river or lighting up the midnight terrain. The blinding light of her sword art immediately shattered the form of the other just behind it, and with their main bodies either discarded or dissolved, what was left of them could only be described as a set of sparkling blue stars against the dreary backdrop of the palace of the undead. NIGHT leaned backwards, shifting her weight under her feet. She watched as the river broiled and bubbled, barely setting the edge of her sword to the ground. A raised chin and half-lidded eyes posed a challenge to the souls on the other side of the burn, to which none would reply with agreement, only empty silence and ghastly stares. Nyanko thought she must've felt at home, then. Together with one of her kind. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #10 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) And so they continued on. Walking, walking, walking. Was there an end in sight? If there was, Nyanko wasn't privvy to know. The little creature was merely a kitten, after all. He was merely along for the ride. The river was home to abominations, sure. But it made way to an abundance of wild outgrowths that Nyanko imagined himself having a field day exploring. His eyes scanned over the traces of highlights that reflected off the various glows in the midst of darkness -- round bumps told him the forms of various mushroom tops, and sharper figures represented the outlines of a forest canopy. Then there were the enclaves and stone surfaces that somehow made the palace of the afterlife feel just like home. His owner slowed, gently bringing their journey to a halt. The kitten, with his keen eyes could spy something glimmering in the darkness of the forest. NIGHT must've seen it too, as she made her way over, but her eyes were more settled on the colorful round objects set beside it than the glinting material itself. She'd taken both of them, though, before setting about on her way. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) It was during walks like these that Nyanko would be lulled to sleep. The shifting of being in his owner's tracksuit was gentle and hypnotizing when there wasn't much in the way of things. The sweet gentle baby let out a yawn, bearing his fangs for the world to see. Except, no one had eyes on him, so his cuteness went unnoticed for the time being. They'd passed a waterfall, now. Off in the distance, on the other side of the river. Nyanko had watched it shift by him with a look of wariness, and he'd expected NIGHT to match his concern just as easily. Instead, her mind seemed ever-absent, set upon the horizon yet registering nothing but the curves and bends of the Stygian she'd tethered herself to following. The kitten breathed when she'd finally spared a glance his way, trying to squeak out another bit of concern. Instead, she crouched down, hands reaching out for another cavity of loot right upon the river bank. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #12 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) The wayward traveler wandered on, eyes still bound to the horizon. And her little familiar's gaze to match upon the opposite shores of the Stygian, as he curled up neatly in his little adventuring back-seat. It must've only been minutes, but still, it'd felt like hours to the kitten. Nyanko sleepily wondered which way they were headed, upon such a calming, cozy floor. The glow of the gentle waters were lovely for a change, and though his eyes burned at looking at them for too long, it still felt comforting to be near that light. If there was anything he'd enjoy from this ride, it was how close they'd been to the river this whole time while being far enough not to warrant unwanted attention once more. Perhaps he should take a nap. Just until the next big thing happened. And maybe once his owner had decided that she was done with collecting round, messy eggs for once. He really didn't understand the point of them, but they were everywhere, for some reason. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted April 9, 2020 He roused at the clashing of steel against fiend, howling shrieks close enough to pierce at his hearing, and battering against his owner's armor to stagger her but for a moment. As NIGHT stumbled forward, it was the weight of her blade that drew her close to the water's edge. Not having taken her proper stance would've set her off balance and be open to scathing strikes like those. The static venom from her armor rubbed off on her foes easily enough, though, sending shocks running down their fragmented joints. With that, the sentinel took her time to stand, swinging her blade with a simple flourish. Her cut sliced through her opponents, coaxing blue coated gore torn apart from their forms once again. As the wailing continued, she kicked one of the apparitions aside, knocking them off of what was left of their feet, a limb collapsing back down into the river water. Idly, she pinned the monster to the ground with a boot. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #14 Share Posted April 9, 2020 No mercy for the fallen. NIGHT grinded her heel further down into the monstrosity's back, solemn eyes deathly illuminated, reflecting the Stygian's lapping cyans. The player's sights were cast to its struggling, groaning form, the wretched thing now forced to face its temperament, warts and all. It seethed and squeaked with pain, the liquid blue that stained its figure landing upon the warden's dark garbs in its flailing. With each drop, the woman seemed to dig in harder, leaning forward into the motion for emphasis. Then, as the shadows shifted in the distance, Nyanko noticed her stop. Eyes flicked towards the other threats. That the venom was starting to wear off the other apparition that had struck at her was telling to the two just how carried away they'd gotten, leaving their surroundings unattended. Lazily, the warrior called her blade to dance for her again, setting the battlefield alight with white, erasing all traces of the other ghouls until there was nothing left. NIGHT 0 Posted April 9, 2020 Author #15 Share Posted April 9, 2020 And then there were three. Never mind the other spawn watching, residing on the other side of the river bed. NIGHT's focused settled back on the one nuisance that was beneath her, that was beginning to wane off the effects of her secret toxin. At its restlessness, the player returned to kneading it against the ground, her breaths beginning to steady, slow and calm. When the abhorrence began to break away from her hold, she held her breath. Her foot raised away from the creature for a beat, she partook in one final act, crushing the edge of her boot back into its figure, letting her knee-jerk aggression inflict a savoury pain upon her target. It burned enough, so much that it engulfed her prisoner's attention fully, reducing the pitiable creature to a more tepid state. Then, the executioner angled the edge of her blade near the limb that remained submerged in the water, and shifted it higher up its form. When she'd stopped, she let her blade shine bright once again. There would be no service for the slain. NIGHT 0 Posted April 10, 2020 Author #16 Share Posted April 10, 2020 Onwards they went, Nyanko slowly shifting back into a sleepy daze. When they came across a rock by the river, they'd stopped. Nyanko spent his out-of-pocket time pacing about. It felt good to be back on solid ground again, his paws meeting the grainy tones of the earth and rock. Meanwhile, his owner was tending to much different matters with the system, setting herself upon stone faced towards the river, her mind send on her messages once more. Maybe a bit of work might do her some good. Bring NIGHT out of her closed thoughts for a moment. Serve her some respite. With that, Nyanko found himself bounding into the bushes. His absence seemed to have gone unnoticed, the player nary looking around for him after he freed himself from the bushes, rustling the leaves around him. The kitten bounced out three small eggs -- tokens of his findings, having noticed the colors off from his low angle. It was hints like these that his owner often had trouble with. NIGHT 0 Posted April 10, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted April 10, 2020 Wait till NIGHT sees this. What a shock. Nyanko continued to bound in and out of the foliage, dragging bits and pieces out from the brush. The forest they'd been near throughout their stroll down the river was thick in appearance, yes, but the kitten found it hard to wander far away and lose his sense of direction by nature of its form. After all, he'd somehow manage to hit rock first travelling in a straight line. If there was a crevice from wherever he'd met snout to wall, he was sure to find something of interest. That's how he pulled out a Curious Shiny Thing in the first place. His first major haul. The eggs weren't so important, he figured. It'd taken him enough time to drag the Shiny back towards his owner that the player had actually been looking around behind her when he'd showed up. Four more eggs to NIGHT's basket, on top of the three from earlier. Now, there was one more item of intrigue to go with it. NIGHT 0 Posted April 10, 2020 Author #18 Share Posted April 10, 2020 "All on your own?" The kitten let out a cheery mew at her utterance of surprise. The haze in her eyes had still remained. If Nyanko had any qualms about it ever having left, all he'd need to do is observe the player's reactions and gauge how lackluster they'd appear to have been, before comparing it to his own memory. Apathy was one hell of a dampener on his owner. The smile that shot back at him was genuine, but incomplete. With a hand, she reached out to his head, rubbing it gently. Nyanko purred, beginning to close his eyes in happiness. It didn't matter to him how distraught her owner was when he was receiving her affection. He believed he knew how much better she felt when he was around, or when he called out to her in concern. While he knew he couldn't solve the player's problems, at least he could be there for her when she needed it. One last parting gift from their environment before they packed up and left. Beside the rock NIGHT had rested upon, a handful more objects began to fade into view, an item node presented by the system. With a squeak, Nyanko pointed it out just as he was being slipped back into his hovel, and humming in response, his owner squatted down to gather the items for herself. A pleasant break, and a decent haul. Quote ID: 140411 | LD: 15 (9, +6) | CD: 6 | Material Search | + Tier 1 Material (1), Easter Egg (2) > Three turns have passed since combat. NIGHT 0 Posted April 10, 2020 Author #19 Share Posted April 10, 2020 Another change of pace, another rabble of miscreants to be put to the sword. Ever eternal, the Stygian giveth, lending its offspring form and feeding them to the lasting grind that was the cycle of life. What would be created would eventually find its destruction, and to that end, Nyanko mused, NIGHT would be there to pass judgement upon the foes that would walk their path this day. It was with a sigh that the player performed her duty. With a slow brandish she drew her sword, the metal hitting the ground with a bounce. One broad stroke in an arc would be her warning shot, and as the demons continued their approach still, so did her movements continue in response. Bit by bit the wights clambered forth, and be hindered to advance again and again. Her strikes painted the floor with the telling glistening blue, smothering the inky darkness of dirt away. NIGHT 0 Posted April 10, 2020 Author #20 Share Posted April 10, 2020 When her enemies had fallen, her onslaught refused to stop. The scrambling of lights fading away melded and meshed with the sheen of her art, tearing away at a void in front of her. Nyanko looked to the player, in curiosity as to why his owner had kept going. NIGHT was grimacing. Stuck in her thoughts, the blue highlights from the river glow were beginning to pale in comparison with the deep-rooted anguish that was starting to be unearthed, starting to be dredged back up into view. There was a fire within her eyes, the smallest hint of a flame in flicker, and though it was obscure, her movements were telling. NIGHT wasn't feeling alright for sure. And as her blade work finally slowed, the floor now marked with several, temporary vantablack cuts, the player loosened her pressed lips and let out a growl and a sigh. She'd muttered something, breathing heavily, and Nyanko couldn't catch her phrase. But the sheathing of her blade and a tight blink of her eyes to extinguish the agony within her was enough to tell the kitten that his owner was ready to continue onwards. They carried on, to wherever their path would lead them to.
