Quest: The Second Lesson, Is Also Free

It was a fairly interesting couple of days since he finished meeting with Zackariah and completed the very first portion of the introductory quest to welcome adventurers and players into the world of Aincrad. Titan couldn't believe some of the people he met, the armor they wore and how fanatical some of them seemed to be with their equipment and skills in this game. Still, Titan hadn't felt entirely sure of his combat abilities and figured that this quest would lead him down that dangerous path. Perhaps, it'd ease him kindly. The spear he had in his hand felt comfortable, the man was still slightly awkward with the weapon but the system seemed kind enough and forgiving for combat. It was simply an angle and a charge, the weapon did most of the hard work and yet, Titan still didn't have the weapon art mastered that apparently unlocked with his first rank up. 

Titan gripped tightly against his spear, opening the door once again to Tyle's blacksmith while being greeted by a kind old man, the golden exclamation point still hovering like a siren's call for his second quest.

Today in particular, the blacksmith was particularly dirty and had a black soot covering quite a bit of the surfaces. He would remember when he had enough Col to recommend or purchase a deep, deep cleaning for Lyle. It would be the least he could do for someone who was setting Titan up to know how to play this godforsaken game, it wasn’t the elderly man’s fault the game played out the way it did.

“ It’s such a pleasure to see you again, Lyle. ” His words were kind as Titan continued forward, a smile and a nod as Lyle begun to speak and a pop-up appeared in the corner of his view with the quest description scrolling as he spoke with a grey accept button lingered only being acceptable once the man finished his monologue.

“ So what do you say, Titan? ” Lyle asked with a hammer in one hand and a prod for the flames in another.

“ You know, Lyle. I haven’t really done too much combat yet. ” Titan said.

“ Nonsense, you’ll be absolutely great. I’m trying to craft this rare armor piece and I just need three Boar Pup Tusks. For a young lad like yourself? I promise you it’ll be a piece of cake. Just make sure you have those potions I gave you from earlier. You might need it as those pesky tusks don’t appear that often. ” Lyle eagerly retorted with vigor and a sense of support that Titan could slay a dragon right now, if he wanted to. 

The damn man had a way with words and Titan couldn’t help but know that he would have to face his fears sooner or later of combat. He wasn’t necessarily afraid of the combat portion but in a game where death meant the absolute end, how could he not be wary when he wasn’t comfortable doing anything more than plucking weeds with his spear. This was when he wished his Dad would’ve put him in Karate or some type of Martial Art, he wasn’t a fighter. The man sold hotel rooms for a damn living.

He exhaled a breath and nodded. “ Yeah, I have the potions right here. If I end up getting too beat up, you owe me old man. ” Titan couldn’t help but chuckle a little at his joke, gesturing a finger over to Lyle in jest as if he had been scolding the man.

Titan glanced over at the map that Lyle had that showcased exactly where the Boar Pups would be in relation to the Town of Beginnings. “ Alright, I’ll head out. I’ll see you later, hopefully.”  Winking at the old man as he shut the door behind him and released a sharp exhale, wielding his one-handed spear and headed his way north to the forests on the outskirts of town, where the pesky boars were known to live.

Casually, Titan walked past the inn that had been home for the past few years, a pang of regret ringing throughout as he passed, realizing how much time he wasted simply in his waiting for others to play the game. Now, it was scary but all he could do was persist – one step at a time.

It took a little bit of time for Titan to finally arrive to the outskirts of the forest but mostly because it took an extra thirty minutes for Titan to bolster up the courage he needed to do this. It was simple, it was supposed to be easy too. All he needed to do was collect tusks from weak wild boar pups. Titan felt overwhelmed but he could do it, this was a baby quest that everyone had to do. It shouldn't feel so heavy, like it was simply life or death.

A noise boar pup squealed as it rolled around in a mud pit that seemed to appear in the forest fairly inconspicuously, the pup had been belly up and rubbing it's back into the puddle until Titan's eye contact made the hairs against its frame spike up. Quickly, squirming to its feet, the pup had been close enough to be aggroed by Titan.

" Alright, here we go. " He exclaimed, widening his stance and bracing with the balls of his feet while his basic attack charged up inside of the spear. Titan held onto it a little too long as the boar seemed to slam it's snout right into Titan's stomach as the man curled over slightly and groaned in pain, the shine of his weapon disappearing from the hit.

" Focus. " Titan yelled to himself, steeling his resolve once more as he readied himself for another round of combat against what he would embarrassingly have to say was a worthy foe.

Once Titan took a moment to breathe and the damn Wild Boar Pup had distanced himself as he looped around the forest to head in for another charge, the adventurer noticed that the charge into his belly wasn't painful at all but he still reacted as he normally would in that type of situation. " Huh. " He mused to himself, making a mental note to explore that phenomenon a little bit more later on. For now? He had a boar to take on. 

Titan lifted his spear once again, this time charging over at full speed to the pup who had been rushing over to Titan as well, guaranteed to try and slam the new player back and show who really had dominance in this forest. Tilting his spear, the man finally knew the feeling of a sword art being fully charged up as his spear radiated with a pulsing white energy and lunged Titan forward with a mind of it's own into the Pup's chest.

It was instantaneous but the pup seemed to disintegrate into tiny azure and ivory pixel boxes while a pop-up appeared with the loot he could collect. Two Easter Eggs and one of the three tusks he needed. " Not so bad, two more. " Twisting one hand into the hilt of his spear, his eyes peeled for his next target allowing his mind to clear to see or hear where the next pup would potentially be coming from.

A few breaths were taken, methodical and calming as Titan could feel the heartbeat pulsing through his neck finally settling back into its chest as his first rush of battle had been victorious. “ Good job, Regon’s Tooth. ” The name somehow came to him out of the ether of his mind as the adventurer settled into the seconds of calm that came after a battle knowing that there was still more combat to face.

And there the beast had been, fifteen feet away with its tusk curled and girthy wanting to make Titan a trophy mangled against its mighty tusks. He lunged in haste, the boar’s quick feet surprised Titan as he activated a basic attack, the sword glowed before he was struck once again in the chest and his own concentration disappeared in the process. Eyes quickly looked at his energy, it was fine but dipped by one every single snafu he had. “ Shoot. ” He spat out the irritation that bubbled within, reentering his focus for another attack on the pup that honestly, looked more adult than child.

This time he was certain he would not fail, why? Mostly because the man was absurdly confident on his own abilities despite this being his very second wild encounter against a beast in the forests. The first seemed to happen so easy, that had to mean this would work well too, right?

Wrong! Titan decided to rush the boar this round, his feet moved him fairly quick and with haste but as he charged for another basic attack, the Wild Boar Pup turned its head at the last minute and ended up spinning its head to tear at Titan’s armor again, the hue of his sword disappearing by the attack. The boar ended up adapting and the adventure was a bit skewered anyways and wouldn’t be she’s doing it.

 “ What the hell! ” He yelled in protest, pissed off that perhaps it seemed as though what was simply supposed to be an easy quest was not ending up being so. Titan hunkered down, his energy might have been low but his health was still high and sturdy. It was far too early to give up quite yet. He would get this boar if it was the last thing he'd do.

This time he would hit the damn wild boar pup, it was his destiny and he would manifest that this would not stop the momentum he was trying to build. Titan gripped even tighter on his one-handed spear, waiting to observe the boar pup's movements as Titan then decided to use the trees to his own benefit. Sneaking  behind one, rushing to a similar one next and poking his head out on occasion, it seemed as though his little silly maneuver seemed to have worked for,  a moment. He charged up a basic attack with the spear's hilt in his left hand while the tip of the spear began to glow with a brilliant azure light. It was quick but Titan stepped out of his cover in haste, nimble as he aimed the spear at the pup and it seemed as though Titan went flying as he slashed at the boar causing it to groan in great pain.

He just needed one more attack and he'd be able to defeat the pup, the slice bringing him lower but the health pool still in the green.

The sweat on his brow beaded together, his free hand wiping it away out of reaction. This was hard, combat was not easy at all and his Regon's Tooth just didn't quite have the damage it needed to for these boar pups. He'd have to do more, figure out how to do enough to finish them. Luckily, his health still looked great as he continued forward. " That's it, I think it's time we pierce the boar. " Taking to his blade, Titan activated Pierce as the combat art as the blade was close to his chest, his elbow bent to give him enough momentum to slice deep into the pup.

The Wild Boar Pup seemed to have slow down slighty from the damage. Still quick, but a bit slower and what looked like a sore hoof as he compensated with his other legs. Titan bounced off with his knees, pushing himself forward and stabbing right into the pup with a pierce which immediately brought the beast from green health to dead. The pixels dispersing into the air as Titan glanced at the loot box that appeared and said the word nothing.

He blinked a few times, focusing himself to not feel defeated. This is what it meant to farm for materials and quest drops.

It was a weird sensation to feel healthy but be so utterly exhausted that it was hard to move. He knew it was a bad idea to hold off on resting a little bit but he wanted to finish this quest and showcase his skills as a combatant. However, it was a little embarrassing how the Pups were truly making him look like a fool in battle. It was mostly luck that propelled him forward, that and enough health to be able to take a bunch of hits from the pups. 

With those words another pup appeared, this time it seemed like the runt but moved with a quicker speed than the other two. It began to feel a bit more comfortable for the man, hand on the spear as he prepared a basic lunge attack against the pup. Until the damn boar sneaked behind one of the trees and charged forward with its tusks out, aimed for Titan's leg as he yelled as the ivory tooth sliced against Titan and chipped away slowly but surely from his health.

He'd be consistently showed up by these Boars and that was fine, Titan knew it'd take more than ambition and desire to climb the ladder and rise to the front lines. It'd take dedication, a little bit of luck and preservation in times of strife. The weeds were monotonous, sure, but these battles felt disjointed. His spear still hadn't been quite what he needed it to be and despite having the bonuses, it wasn't doing enough and his energy already dipped to two. What happened if it ended up at zero, would it cause the man to keel over in exhaustion? It wasn't something he wanted to see at all.

Titan readied a basic attack at the speedy boar, this time he would swing from above his head down at the enemy, a great slice against its face as a chunk of its health dipped while it missed Titan's frame and slammed into the tree trunk that Titan had been starting right in front of hoping for a moment like this.

" Sorry to do this. " Titan apologized, it was the perfect set-up. As the pup attempted to pull itself out of the tree, the player readied himself with a pierce sword art and as he did the shimmering blues returned to the tip of the man's spear. It was quick and painless, Titan thrust directly into the boar's chest and in an instant it seemed as though the pup's health dropped to zero and the animal's loot box appeared once again. This was becoming bread and butter to Titan, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve as he accepted the second boar pup tusk from the enemy and the six easter eggs he was also able to loot.

But now, he was at 1 energy. It'd take him a bit to recover, right? He wasn't sure if it was worth just chancing it with low energy or take the time to rest back up to full. His eyes peered around for another boar, nervous he'd get attacked while deciding what to do.

Titan knew it'd probably be for the best to rest, just in case another boar pup decided it wanted to attack and the man wouldn't have enough time to sneak away with such low energy. So, while everything seemed to be in the clear, Titan gripped onto the nearest tree branch and pulled himself onto the branch to relax for a little bit. Sure, it was a little unorthodox but as long as these damn pups couldn't climb, they would be absolutely safe.

Spreading his legs out slightly, Titan decided he would close his eyes for now, just for a moment while his health and energy regained. He hadn't been sleeping as much as he was used to from before the adventurers. Perhaps, a nap was the best thing for now. It seemed as though Titan slipped into sleep in the embrace of a low-hanging branch for now with his weapon resting in his lap as Titan did the best he could to relax and also not trying to move and throw off the balance of the tree. Whatever he was doing seemed to be working.

Dreams were so bizarre. It hadn't taken the man more than twenty second to fall into a quick slumber while in the avatar world, some might even say it was Titan's hidden skill to fall asleep absolutely anywhere in the shortest amount of time. Titan was himself, but the him he was back in the real world. Ren Tanaka, strikingly similar to Titan's avatar expect having brunette hair had been at his family's childhood home watching television. It seemed to be a clever game of celebrities chasing after one another, Ren simply alone watching with a bowl of popcorn in his lap. It then included his Mother, sitting so nicely in the corner on the floor until his whole family seemed to be there in a cacophonous roar of laughter with them all standing with victory poses in their hands. 

But then, they began to grow and Titan began to shrink as if he was being pulled further away from wherever his family had been.

The couch pushes Titan off of it as he is diving deeper into a darkness and now he's free-falling with the sight of what seemed like another Earth existing and exponentially getting closer as if Titan was a damn meteor aiming for the Earth. A large tower seemed to be in the distance as Titan seemed to hit the ground in the dream as his real form began to teeter from the branch. He woke up in haste and quickly cost himself, one free hand holding tight to the branch as he shook himself awake and analyzing the scenario he had been in. With a sharp exhale, Titan let his hand go and landed on the ground of the forest on the outskirts of the Town of Beginning.

" What a very obvious dream. " His heart pained for a moment, missing his family but everything he did was to fight to get back to them. " Game on. " He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, arms quickly grabbing for his spear among the branches as he spotted another Pup in the distance, that would be his next enemy.

Feeling somewhat revitalized from his tiny power nap, Titan wiped the sleep from his eyes once again and shut his eyes for a moment while standing in the forest. He hadn't been able to see any pups still, they were the color of mud with dark thistles of fur but the ambient noise told a different story. The faint sound of rummaging and snorts could be heard from the North and a couple of other areas but it seemed that the pig due North would be the closest one.

It didn't take much longer than five minutes to see the enemy in front of him, the quest enemy's portrait popped up as it had its nose into the ground sniffing for food until all of a sudden, it's eyes met with Titan's and the pup dashed towards him.

It seemed like their moves were a bit similar at this point, Titan charged a basic attack on his one-handed sword and quickly dipped backwards out of the way and lunged forward holding onto the furthest end of the stick to give him enough reach to prod at the boar and lower a small chunk of it's health.

It's like a glorious light radiated throughout his spear after his basic attack, like his weapon was being blessed by Aincrad itself and began to glow red. The system yelled at him with a quick alert < CRIT WITH YOUR WEAPON > with a tiny dialogue box saying " Your weapon has been blessed with additional damage on your attack, hit your target to crit on your foe. "a

With words light that, Titan hadn't needed to be told twice as he swung his spear above his head once, wanting to add flavor into his attack as he striked at the boar with his additional damage causing the boar to disappear in an instant. " Holy s^&(. I guess there's random chances for things like that to happen. " Titan learned something new every single day and with the loot bot appearing, he had been able to find his last tusk along with more easter eggs.

It was almost over he assumed, so Titan decided to stay out a bit to see if there were any last minute eggs to be found within the forest region before returning back to Lyle.

Counting his three tusks one final time, Titan let out a sigh of relief while he pulled up the quest again to see that portion of the quest objectives were complete. It seemed like the next step was heading to Lyle to turn in the tusks. He was incredibly lucky with the odds, the weeds seemed absolutely endless but this wasn't so bad at all. It seemed like he was blessed and highly favored in this instance and Titan would take any wins he could while still feeling like he couldn't quite do much more than the basic introductory quests for now.

As he closed his inventory, Titan noticed that there had been a cluster of easter eggs that either formed as he left or was sitting right on the branch where he decided to sleep this whole time. With a quick jump and scoop, the adventurer was able to collect three eggs from that location. " See, it's a good thing I stayed for now. " He had at least a dozen from this quest so far, he wasn't sure what his total was but he had a feeling he was close to at least getting a single prize.

Titan decided to mix things up a little bit and placed his assault spear away for now. It rested in a sheath on his back for easy access of his predominant hand but he hadn't expected to need combat skills for a bunch of friendly easter egg gathering. It seemed silly but he still had a feeling if the front liners took time away from their goal to collect eggs, it just had to be something good!

He got onto his knees while at the base of a tree, fingers reaching against the exposed root system until he was able to reach and collect two more eggs in the process. His fingertips seemed to be just a smidgen too short, the man pushed himself down further onto the floor and reached with more ambition and seemed to have the eggs in his hands after a few attempts.

With that final push of succeed, Titan stood up as he felt happy with his haul and began to walk out of the forest he had been in for the quest.
