Oscar looked around and noticed that his mind had completely departed from his body yet again. He found himself in the midst of yet another group of spiders with only a vague recollection of the actions he had taken to get himself in this position. Cognizant of his actions for the minute, Oscar cleaved through the enemies with an Explode Catapult. As seemed to be typical of this outing, one spider survived his attack. It missed its own attack, mercifully. This gave Oscar the opening that he needed to collect his loot and get himself into a better position for the next attack. Honestly, he didn't really know why he was still here. Other than the obvious fact that he required more eggs, it seemed like this whole endeavor was just weird today. He was grateful that he could put himself on autopilot while he mind wandered. It made the whole process of grinding that much more palatable when he didn't pay attention to most of what he was doing.

The last spider was quickly slain and Oscar was pulled back into the deepest recesses of his mind. Tyson mirrored a younger Oscar in a lot of ways. When he was hungry, he would have something to eat by the end of the night. If the fridge was empty, he'd find some other way. Either he stood watch for the dealers for a twenty or he stole what he needed from a grocery store. But one way or another, he would eat. That single-minded determination was focused solely upon keeping the child alive. If not for his constant issues in school, Oscar would have never known about the kid's existence. It was by pure happenstance that the case landed on his desk and even now, with the kid actively seeking to do him harm, he didn't regret anything that happened one bit. Well, maybe the part where he thought that Tyson died and just gave up trying to confirm that - thus abandoning a child with already-present abandonment issues.

I kinda really suck at my job, huh?

Oscar couldn't really say that it was selfishness that kept him away from the Monument of Life for two whole years. It was fear. He was afraid that if the Monument had confirmed his worst fears that it would break him. At that point, he couldn't even put it on the same level as fear. It was pure cowardice. All of this could have been avoided if he hadn't been so weak back then. If he wasn't so weak now, then he could set the record straight. But the truth of the matter was, Oscar didn't feel like he could even look the young man in the face, much less try to justify himself. There was no justification. He had made a mistake.

Tyson isn't justified either. He's hurt. A wounded man does the most damage. He doesn't think he really has anything to lose.

As horribly as he felt over the entire ordeal, there was a point to be made that Tyson was lashing out. Trying to hurt anyone and everyone he could on his way to bring his war to Oscar's doorstep. All over a perceived slight. Oscar would have hoped that after a few years of being there for the kid that he would have earned himself some benefit of the doubt. Clearly not. When that sank in, Oscar felt almost offended at the prospect that his former protege was going to war with him and his. As a welcome distraction from that thought, Oscar found the perfect moment to fire off an Explode Catapult into the spiders that he was fighting. As had quickly become the norm at this point, Oscar, somehow, managed to miss one of them. He was getting really tired of his combat durations being inflated by his own ability to hit anything. He felt like he should have been done several spiders ago but between that and poor luck on his loot, here he was.

Now that he was focused more on combat, it stood to reason that he would be more effective at it - at least slightly. But alas, his attack hit only air as the spider skittered out the way. If there was any saving grace it was that the spider was also unable to smack Oscar with its pitiful amount of damage. He almost preferred to get hit at this point. At least something would happen due to his health not being at the maximum. But, alas, there would be no real interaction between Oscar and Spider47 in this round of combat. All he could do was hope he was a better shot next round instead of letting his mind wander into some weird territory as he had done for this entire outing. He couldn't honestly say that he remembered most - if any - of the combat he underwent in the past few minutes of combat. He'd slain a metric ton of the things at this point - at least double what he would have slain in any other hunting session.

It seemed that all's well that ends well. The very next round of combat resulted in Oscar completely obliterating his target. After collecting his loot, Oscar headed back for the lakeside. He was thankful at this point for a bit of a breather. He was almost fifty spiders deep at this point and oh-so-close to his goal. He sat down on a rock next to the lake and stretched out. He felt oddly relaxed. Despite all of the discord sown in his brain case, he didn't really feel extremely depressed. He just felt relaxed. His stress was gone - for the most part. There was still the ever-present stress from being stuck in the death game that was Sword Art Online, but other than that Oscar actually felt good for once. He really didn't know how long it would last, but he would certainly enjoy it until it ran its course. That is, assuming it ran its course. He'd never had such a profound breakthrough like this - especially while doing something so mind-numbingly boring.

As he cast his line into the water, one question that he had been mulling over was how to reconcile the man he was with the man he is now. He knew from experience that everyone had a past. Everyone had things that they would prefer people not know about them. It varied from person to person. Some closets had more skeletons than others. Some closets could barely contain them. Others were sparse save for a scarce few of them. Some just had one massive skeleton and others just had a teeny-tiny one. Regardless, it wasn't in good taste to take them out of the closet and put them on display for all to see. That being said, there were certain facets of his personality that he had long-since cast aside that would benefit him now. They weren't necessarily bad personality traits, but when Oscar was first attempting to change himself he found them in compatible with the idealized version of himself that Young Oscar possessed.

That was most of the issue, wasn't it? He was trying so hard to be this version of himself that he had imagined when he was young. A kind, gentle man who went out of his way to help people. He still wanted to be that. But that just wasn't how the world worked. He could still be a good man but not at the expense of his own health. He had to harden himself up a little bit. Not much. He didn't want to be a slab of granite. But he also couldn't sustain the feeding of an entire orphanage nearly every day. They had people there that could pick up a profession or two. Did they not do it because they were lazy? Probably not. Did Oscar filling that need justify their decision not to put themselves at risk picking up a Profession? Most definitely. Oscar expected to get some blowback when he announced that he would not be devoting all of his time to food prep and would instead focus on gathering materials for the Orphanage.

He could fill their larders, but he would no longer cook out of them. At least not as frequently as he was right now. It was up to the matrons and patrons of the Orphanage to commit to the job they volunteered for and to actually follow through. It was patently unfair to shunt all of their responsibilities onto him and the other crafters around town. This was their fight and they had to take ownership of it. This was especially true considering he would be shifting his focus towards the Frontlines. He now understood why the Frontliners didn't try to help out the weaker players. It wasn't that they didn't try. The people just didn't want to try to meet them halfway. They couldn't do everything. They couldn't clear floors and carry every noob through their tutorial quests. They couldn't prep for Raids and feed an entire city. It just wasn't possible.

It would be a hard pill to swallow. Oscar would have to devise a way to break the news gently. But, perhaps this would be a good thing. Making the Town of Beginnings more sustainable and turning it into a hub for new players that had yet to get their feet wet in Aincrad was a net gain for the community at large. But it would be hard work. Oscar could help push them in the right direction. But meaningful change would ultimately be up to the people. Oscar didn't exactly fancy himself being at the forefront of a major movement like that, but he could definitely help get the ball rolling. It was decided then. He would withdraw support outside of helping supply the orphanages and the other restaurants on the floor. He would continue to help the newbies he came across, but not to the point where it was almost the only thing he did in a given day. That seemed like a solid compromise.

Three spiders remained from Oscar's initial two rounds of combat. He'd really just had the worst luck today. Well, he couldn't really say that. He'd been extremely distracted for most of this hunting session. He couldn't very well expect himself to be firing on all cylinders when he was barely paying attention to most of the combat in front of him. He brought his axe back and then sliced through the spiders in a wide arc. Left to right, right to left, and punctuated by a final downward smash. Honestly, it wasn't even the smash that did the most damage. It was the ground exploding on impact and sending shrapnel flying through his enemies like a frag grenade. The spiders, one-by-one, shattered like glass. In their wake, they left only three shimmering spots on the ground. Upon interaction and waiting for a small progress bar to fill, Oscar's hard-earned loot was dumped into his inventory.

Oscar went off in search of another group of spiders to slay. He was so close to being finished at this point. Over 50 spiders had fallen to his axe. Never-before-seen amounts of Col had found its way into his wallet. As far as he knew, he didn't know of anyone whose wealth even approached what he had earned from these spiders at this point. It was rather interesting to know that these spiders were so rich they could probably buy Castle Aincrad several times over at this point. Spider revolution. The thought was as hilarious as it was terrifying. Oscar would have to relieve another set of spiders of their Col. Luckily, he happened upon a group clustered together in short order. One Explode Catapult later, and they were all knocked well into the yellow. He was surprised that he didn't miss any of them this time. Watch me miss them all on my next attack.

His expectations in his own ability had been lowered to a point where he honestly doubted his ability to hit four stationary spiders with a single attack. But, when he launched his final Explode Catapult, he found himself pleasantly surprised by the fact that he had sliced through all of them. The damage from his attack was more than enough to send all of the spiders straight to Hell. Relieving their corpses of their Col took much out of the Spiders' economy, thereby reducing the risk of a spider revolution. Glorious, is what it was. He looked at his Egg total and thought for a moment. He could certainly do another round of combat after letting his energy recover. Bring it to an even 60 Spiders slain. Or, he could be lazy and just fish until he was certain he had the eggs he needed to purchase the last two items he wanted from the shop. Decisions, decisions.

Oscar headed back to the lakeside, still on the fence about whether or not he wanted to fight more spiders. It wasn't until he saw the idyllic, serene expanse of waters stretching out before him that he made his decision. He opened his menu and summoned his chair. He then situated it on the ground carefully and plopped down in it. He found himself able to enjoy the view for once without getting super introspective. Perhaps his brain had just had enough for that for one day. There were no creeping malicious thoughts as he cast his line out into the waters and waited. Just a steady calm in his mind. The chaos had subsided and everything was ordered just so. He had to wonder just how much work he would have to do in order to remain in this head space. When he had first gotten started, he was actually able to soak in the sights and enjoy himself. He found himself joyful, then, that he was able to do that once more.

He really liked this. Being able to sit in his chair, thinking about nothing in particular. He had managed to land a good haul from his last cast and the glimmer of excitement he got from casting his line out again was palpable. That was the fun of fishing. It wasn't a mortal battle between man and fish. Fish were rather stupid, actually. Can't fight something too dumb to not bite a floating worm, after all. It was, instead, a waiting game. Eventually, a fish would bite. Reeling was the battle. Everything else leading up to that was just suspense. Every tug on the line, every dip of the water trying to fake you out. Make you reel your line in early. Patience was the key. Patience and luck. Because it wasn't about outplaying the fish. It was about waiting for a hungry fish to notice the free food you had offered to them and punishing them for their inability to think critically.

Oscar added his previous haul to his inventory and cast his line out again. As he waited, he opened his inventory and scrolled through his menus. With a click of a button, a cooler appeared in the air in front of him. He grabbed the cooler and set it off to the side. He fished through the cooler and grabbed one of the bottles inside. This one was a greenish-yellow liquid. He popped the cap and brought the drink to his lips and took a tentative sip. Almost immediately, his face contorted and he recoiled. In a huff, he tossed the bottle away and spat off to the side. His rough approximation of Mtn Dew was just that: rough. It tasted like a lime made love to a lemon and then the offspring they produced soaked itself in battery acid for several years. He definitely had a ways to go before this one would be even remotely potable. Honestly, he felt like if he had a physical tongue, it would have melted out of his chest.

He fished out another drink to cleanse his palate of the sheer agony that was his Fake Dew. He produced a bottle of crystal-clear liquid. Bubbles formed in the bottle and floated to the top. He popped the top and took a sip. Plain soda water. The bubbles helped to revive his dying taste buds and the water washed away the taste of lemon-lime flavored battery acid. He swished the liquid around in his mouth and then spat. The action seemed to cleanse the interior of his mouth for the most part. There was still a slight tingling sensation. He surmised that that would need to fade on his own and no amount of cleaning his mouth would help him. If only toothpaste was a thing in Aincrad. Perhaps numbing his tastebuds with the raw taste of peppermint would help this whole ordeal be just a touch more pleasant than it was.

Desperate to get the foul taste out of his mouth, Oscar downed the bottle of soda water and discarded the bottle. It was a practice he never practiced in the real world, but there was something cathartic about the act of littering. He knew that he wasn't supposed to do it, but it was also completely consequence free here in the digital world of Sword Art Online. Being able to shatter a bottle on a rock and not having to worry about anyone - least of all himself - needing to clean it up was liberating in its own right. What other things could he get away with here that he couldn't do in the real world? First and foremost, he could simply do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted without thought of having to go to work or sleep. That was the weird thing. Did he really need to sleep anymore? He did it still because it was nice to rest after a long day. But was it necessary?

After a little further thought, Oscar decided that trying to determine whether or not he needed sleep required an experiment that he was simply unwilling to undertake. The most sure-fire method of testing his hypothesis would be to simply stay awake indefinitely. But if he was wrong, then the unpleasant feeling of remaining conscious well past when you should have gone to sleep would have to then be dealt with. Coffee was not something that was readily available in Sword Art Online. At least, functional coffee. In the real world, coffee was consumed to fool your brain into thinking you weren't as tired as you actually were. But in all his time within the confines of the system he had seen no evidence that coffee - and by extension caffeine itself - functioned in the same manner as it did in the real world. In short, there would be nothing to keep him going if he found himself sleep-deprived in a situation that he couldn't disengage from.

Last one, Oscar thought with some measure of finality as he cast his line back into the lake. It had been a long time coming - an excruciating grind - but now, with this last cast, he would be finished with the entire thing. He placed his rod down on the ground and gathered up his things. After a mental note to revisit the Mtn Dew formula, Oscar turned his attention back to his line. The moment he picked his rod back up, the line began to twitch. He gave a mighty tug and landed the haul that was on his line. Materials and one final smattering of eggs were added to his inventory. Oscar put away his fishing rod and headed back to town. While the grind had been slow and painful, he felt contentment at the fact that it was finally concluded. With his axe slung over his back, Oscar shoved his hands into his pockets and began to whistle a tune all the way back to the safe zone.
