Spawing a desert fox

230 health, 69 damage

She walked up to a fox mob and aggro’d it. The foxresponded in kind, showing its teeth and showing that it was ready for a fight. Then without hesitation it kicked something at her. She thought it was just one, but there were at least two projectiles careening towards her. She looked to the side and ran in a circular arc around the fox while forming her own strategy. She would then run straight at it and try slash it with her dagger. All the while the she would try to keep running around in a circle and keeping a small circle around the fox. She wanted to see what this thing could do before getting close to him by herself. She was lucky her attack landed and she was also lucky that she had dealt some good damage but she also got hit which pretty much sucked a lot.

As she fought she saw someone else doing exactly what she was doing, but just a little ways away. She shouted, asking who they were and what they were up to. They said, “My name’s Heln. We’re neat because we’re adopted brothers,” she commented. She would have never guessed they were related so being adopted made sense. There seemed to be a bit of tension between them, which she didn’t fully understand but it was all good to her. So long as they kept their voices down she could finish this combat in peace. She smiled and shouted, “well I’m going to wrap up over here in a bit.” She went over to attack the fox again with her blade and then waved to them when she had landed her hit as if to show them that she knew what she was doing. Hopefully she would get learn a little more about them if they were like minded individuals.

Doing combat with mobs was not always the glamorous thing that people made it out to be. Even as she slashed at the fox again she felt a little bored. She almost had to occupy herself with looking around for something to take note of. Often times it was boring, like really boring. She didn’t even find herself surrounded by people today. She was on top of a desert volcano. Just walking around and making sure nobody was causing any mischief. She saw someone she knew up here though, someone that sparked some recognition in her memory banks. She squinted at him in the distance and wondered why she hadn’t memorized who this person was… Then it clicked. She had met him when she had been out gathering one day. She didn’t know what he was doing this high up or how he got here but if she kept thinking about it she was sure to get overwhelmed with her own questions.

She walked up to him and said, “aren’t you the guy I gathered with a while ago? What’re you doing up here?” She stretched out and continued, “I’m fighting this fox if it wasn’t obvious by the way. My partners didn’t show up so if you’d join me in my little fight we could make a lot of money for pretty much no work.” She wasn’t being altruistic, she just knew that the bonus from working together was pretty nice. It’d also save her from having to tackle anything they found on the way. If he wasn’t interested then it was no skin off her back. She could just stick around for a while. It wasn’t like this fox was going anywhere. She slashed at it again when it was her turn, saddened by the damage she was taking. Why was it so much!? The easier mobs hurt a lot less and she din’t have to worry.

She yawned and attacked the fox again. This was just another day out farming mobs. At least she was expecting some company this time. She had all but ravaged all the easy to access deserts so she was going to have to let them have time to respawn. For now, the only mobs that she was aware of was those located in more dangerous areas. She was going to have to fight some stuff for that sweet loot. So she walked out towards the nearest desert with foxes and such and had a go at it. Anyone that came by would notice that her dagger was out and she quickly activated her sword arts to keep her damage output at a maximum. She wasn’t expecting any trouble, but one could never be sure. Jumping from cactus to cactus she made sure to dodge her fox this time unlike the last time

The goal of her fighting these fox mobs was quickly on the horizon. She had gone a long way to make it here and all she had to do now was defeat a handful of animals that guarded the col and this would be all over with. The nice day had allowed her to outwit the few easier animals who could have given her trouble because it let her have a good view of her targets at a distance. These were usually much harder to deal with on a bad day. She jumped a fence in a big back jump and landed on feet and hands in front of a couple foxes. He looked at the signs, and she could see treasure behind them, growing around their burrow. Who would have thought that a fox would want to go up against her? But she didn’t aggro them. She still had to deal with her current fox which she slashed at again.

She attacked the fox again but missed. Someone popped out which distracted her. At least the fox missed too. She scowled and asked, “what are you doing, following me?” “Not following, just doing my job,” she said while deflecting the notion that she was after her or anything like that. That’s right, she remembered that this girl form before. She wished she recalled that bit when she decided to extend her the offer to come with her to this area. Whatever, she was locked in now by social precedence. She was sure his words that he would keep an eye on anything moving was going to end up being an inuendo of some sort. She shuddered just a little but she kept her mind open hoping that things wouldn’t be so bad. She floundered, trying to remember what they had talked about last time. She didn’t think there was very much to go off of.

She regained her focus and made another attack. This time she sliced right into the fox as expected. Nice, and she dodged. “So why come all they way here? Got any plans for this place?” She tried to make conversation since there was not much going on.

As they battled though, slowly, the earth turned to mud around one area. Some rocks rose up to float in the small mass of mud that had formed around them. She leaned over and then prodded them with a stick one by one. Some rocks were in a better state than others, who had been crushed and crumbled for several years already. She could make out footprints in these rocks along with a pile of poop. In a gesture of disgust, she made her hand go from left to right to remove the smell that came out of the rocks. It smelled of sulfur. She wondered if it was the fox who had stepped and pooed here.

She immediately walked away from the rocks and continued fighting the fox. She attacked it, missing and getting missed as well. She wanted to investigate the rocks more but couldn't take them with her hands. She’d be too filthy. She only bothered to look at them because they looked suspicious. It hinted that someone or something else had been around here recently. It was worth taking note of for later.

“Oh hey, nice seeing you again,” she said when her pal popped up again. She felt some dejavu because not too long ago it had been her who had come along with her on every single damn fox slaughter. Well, company was nice. She didn’t bother looking at her more than the one time while she shuffled around and did her best to keep the fox at bay. She said, “funny thing about daggers, the really powerful stuff they can do like sword arts are mostly single target. "

She missed the fox and dodged then continued, “So it makes it a bit tricky when dealing with multiple enemies.” She wasn’t ashamed to admit her shortcomings, because she already had the means to overcome them. The solution was hiding but she didn’t have a high enough skill rank. What she really needed was to train her familiar to compensate. While they occupied the beasts’ attention she walked over to its rear and attacked it from behind again. She wondered if the girl was going to hang around here or go find her own to kill. There were plenty of foxes here to deal with and she could use the help, but it wasn’t her call how her time was utilized. “What about your weapon? What can you guys do?” I don’t believe I’ve seen someone of your weapon class in action before. Not that she cared. She already liked her dagger

The woman gave no indication that this was a concern, so she shrugged and looked the fox over. She attacked it again, missing spectacularly. It tickled the back of her mind that a fox would have no hesitation to embrace anything right here in the seat of power. Even going so far as to reject any claim of dominance. The scope caught her interest. She could think of no special capability it should possess. The only likely thing would be that it possessed some charm to see in darkness, which was what the medallion provided. But a NPC monster would have sufficient blessing to have no need of it. Well that's a sign of good sense that you did not harm yourself in the process of discovery. But I suppose you saw her use it, so you knew there was potential danger." She looked at the scope uncertainly, "I think this goes along without saying though.”

In either event she attacked the fox again, disappointedly missed but she dodged as well. She would move on to some other fellows. She heard some players discussing a trade. She was going to look too but someone siad, "The bracelets are essentially an easy-in-and-out, personal infiltration and escape set. Here, this first one? Is for cutting holes in windows to reach locks. You stretch it and then apply it to a pane of glass. Stretching it makes it leak a special acid to its surface that will dissolve glass. The acid won't burn skin right away, but you don't want to let it dry on you. Bring a rag or something with you. The ring will shrink back down to normal size after a bit. I think you can get two such uses from it before the acid is spent and you'd need a new one." What a peculiar item.

She was so distracted that she missed her fox again. She raised an eyebrow and still continued to eavesdrop on the conversation. She focused now on two others that each had a chain-like series of 6 stout links, and a third that had two decorative buckles with straps on opposite sides. "This one is the central gear, and these two with the chain things are the lines.” Clearly they were trying to reason their way out of punishment by offering her some goodies. You buckle down any of those chain links and hook the ring onto anything you think will hold your weight, and you can jump from three stories up to land safely. The gear slows the release of the line enough that you won't do any worse than maybe sting your feet a little. The gear has two buckles so you can strap down both line rings if you need to fall further."

Her look sagged a bit with the realization that she couldn’t take much more damage from the fox. She missed yet again and saw her energy drop to zero, "I'm afraid I can’t be here for much longer. Also, I mean you can't toss them up to catch on something and expect them to drop down and pull you up. Either you get in with some sort of act, or I suppose you could pull the line out manually and hope to throw it like a grappling hook. You'd still have to climb though. It's really, really thin line, hard to climb, but very strong. Kidnapper silk, I believe. Also I'm afraid I don't know how you get the ring unhooked from above once you reach the ground. Probably some slack and a trick flick of the wrist to get to come off. I'd practice that move." She couldn’t believe she was having this conversation.

She sighed as she struck the fox and made it bleed. It was going to die soon she realized as she wiped her hands to make sure they were dry. "You managed to get these wet but it looks like they are still in good condition. These are just bindings for anyone you need to keep tied up. Or they can sort of unroll into a thin sheet book cover.” She didn’t know why books in a game were this intricate. Or why she was even examining something like a book in this hot desert.

She examined the book a little more closely, pointing out the glossy finish and a pearl-like decoration adorning them. "Right now, they have the glossy husk wrap on them, but you can tear that off to expose the vine beneath. This little pearl here, is actually just a dose of the vine's sap. It will soften the binding when you want to take it off...IF you want to take it off."

A shrug embellished her final details as she let the fox simply die from bleeding out. She walked over and gathered its loot and noticed how low her health was. She wasn’t going to get to kill more than one fox today which disappointed her, "You may think salt water is a little inconvenient, but you'll be glad of it if you get caught in some rain. It doesn't have to be actual sea water. Just regular fresh water with some salt mixed in will work fine. Now, as for replacements of stuff that gets used up...I'm afraid I can't help you there. I suspect the librarian had some connections to restock this stuff, but I don't know who or where they are. I would expect there are alchemists here and there with friendly ties to the hospital." She was putting way much time into inspecting this book.  she let out a sigh, knowing that the next half hour was going to suck.

At least now she knew why someone would want to keep it so badly. It was probably valuable to some people. For a moment it seemed that the one who checked out the book to begin with would refuse to reveal the secrets of the items after all. She stood there eyeing the objects, but she did not touch them, nor did she appear to be seeing them at all. Hinata thought that she might be weighing her options, wrestling with her pride maybe? It wouldn’t be the first time this kind of thing had happened.

After all, the woman still was a girl, even if she was now technically a petty criminal for keeping this book for so long. Even though she was an imbecil for thinking she would get away with it, she probably still considered herself to be part of the collective, and was unwilling to freely reveal secrets to strangers.

The girl could understand that completely, but was not too pleased thinking about the finish-line to be blocked off at the last possible moment. She’d gotten her hopes up now, and to crush those into dust… it was a cruel thing really. The girl chuckled then, speaking to herself, apparently, and then making apologies for her mind dwelling on the history of these books. Hinata did not mind, it meant the girl had not backed out of being a bibliophile at all. She then listened closely as the woman began explaining the tools, starting with the medallion and the scope. Both could come in handy, it seemed, though they were very situational. She wondered if the other items were the same. She’d thought the scope useless at first, seeing as it did not enlarge like a spyglass would. But now she was just burning time. There wasn't too much more left before it would be time to go home.

She nodded thoughtfully, pondering the usefulness of these items. Naturally, they would be a great addition to her arsenal if she had accepted them but she didn’t. she took the things and put them away to be returned to their rightful places. “Otherwise, no further questions,” she stated. “Now then. I am prepared to keep my end of the bargain. I won’t tell on you for how badly you tried to convince me not to give me the information I wanted.” Truth to be told, she had worded her agreement in such a way that it gave her a loophole to not actually answer the girl’s questions, but well, Hinata doubted the woman would spread any information she gained. She had seemed very distrustful and hateful of others, after all. Her sarcasm from before had been a good indicator of that. It was time to find out several truths. Her own situation gave credence the fact that it was possible to be interested in these things but not obsessed.

She quickly made it back home to get some lunch. She had finished with just a little bit of time to spare. Now she could do pretty much whatever she wanted. She went back to the bibliophile and decided to continue her chat from earlier. But were they enemies? It did not have to be so. Time would tell soon. And she still had that leverage, knowing that she had tried to commit that crime. There was a ridiculously easy way to test whether or not the woman had other illegal things she wanted to hide. She ahd suggested it quite casually, but there was a hungry glint in her eye that raised Hinata’s suspicions. It was only there for a moment, disappearing just as quickly as it had appeared, to the point where Hinatao wasn’t too sure whether she had imagined it or not. She remembered the hesitation the girl had displayed before talking about the books. Maybe the girl had merely fallen from grace, an event orchestrated by someone wanting to nab her? It seemed farfetched. Oh well, a story for another time she guessed. As she stood there in this desert environment she couldn't help but spot a treasure chest right behind the corner. She went to see if it was what she thought it was... It was a treasure chest!
