Kigen grew up in Tokyo and lived a pretty normal life. With a loving family and supportive girlfriend named Io he wasn’t left wanting much in life. He went to school and eventually graduated university, going on to get a day job in a small office afterward. There he would toil away the days. Rinse and repeat. Life wasn't so bleak as it seemed though. Most solace was found through practicing martial arts and playing games.

When the NerveGear was released he bought himself and Io a pair of headsets. The pair had often played games together and the highly anticipated Sword Art Online would allow them to live double lives in a brand new world. One the eve of its release they were among the thousands who camped out to score copies. But when they logged in the nightmare began. What was supposed to be a fun experience became a game of life and death. Rather than head for the frontlines the two of them found like minded players and joined their friend’s guild, The White Wolves. They were like a family and made the best of the horrible situation for months. But everything was destroyed on that fateful night…

Now as Mugen he walks a road of revenge.

Virtues

Loyal - The White Wolves gave him a sense of purpose and the feeling of being part of something greater than himself. Bonds forged in the guild made him a man who cares deeply about his friends and loved ones. If he’s close with someone he will follow them to the ends of the earth without much question.

Empathetic - Carrying his own pain for so long has made him sensitive to the plights of others. Mugen often tries to help out as best he can around the lower floors. Keeping those around him in high spirits is also something he strives for.

Determined - Once Mugen sets his mind to something there’s no stopping him. In groups he tends to be the one others come to rely on because they know he’ll see things through. But he doesn’t mind. Rather than a burden he sees it as an opportunity to do good. 

Flaws

Vindictive - The deaths of his companions flipped a switch in his mind. Now all of his efforts are spent toward a single goal: Hunting Stygal. Mugen will not rest until he and the Group of 17 are stopped for good.

Emotional - Mugen is a man who likes to follow his heart over everything else. He makes no attempts to hide his emotions. As such they often get the better of him when he’s upset or anxious. 

Withdrawn - Past experiences give him a hard time with trusting others. It takes a while for him to truly open up and it often leads to him pushing people away for seemingly no reason. It’s a problem he’s aware of but not always consciously trying to fix.

Io - (Deceased) A former member of The White Wolves and Mugen’s girlfriend from the real world. Being the one who bought her a copy of the game, he feels directly responsible for causing her death at the hands of The Group of 17's scheming.

Stygal - The former leader of The White Wolves and Mugen’s former best friend. He was revealed to be a member of The Group of 17 after the betrayal of his guild.

The Group of 17 - An organization with unknown motives. Mugen has declared war on them.

Story Thus Far 

Prologue

Mugen has spent the majority of his time trapped in the game alongside his friends in their guild, The White Wolves. One night the guild leader, Stygal, addresses everyone with information he received from a local broker about a secret field boss that was rumored to drop an incredibly rare item if slain. Despite not being high-leveled he assured them it would be alright and besides, they weren't exactly strangers to fighting either. So with excitement the group set out to defeat it. But they would learn how outmatched the guild was shortly after engaging it. Unprepared and with all escape routes blocked, many fell at the hands of the beast. Io being among them, Mugen dropped to his knees in despair. But when it seemed all hope of surviving was lost, 17 unknown players sprang into the fray and finished off the boss. Before anyone can celebrate he alongside Yori, and Hotaru are stunned from behind while the strangers collect the loot. While they writhed in the dirt Stygal muses; revealing that their purpose was only to bait and weaken the monster so that his actual guild would not be at risk. With the Wolves' part in his plan fulfilled he decided to spare the trio's lives as a gift for living through the ordeal. Something he had not initially intended. He also notes they won't be meeting again before turning his back on them and walking away...
