<<Scents of the Wild: The Colossal Shadow>>

"... So much for that trip to Andromeda's, huh...?"

As much as she'd appreciated her merchant's patience and excellent luck, perhaps her faith in the girl had been built on a bias from gambler's fallacy. Nevertheless, at least NIGHT could now note down a mark for herself having done somewhat of a favour for her friend. When Yuki had stepped into Pandora's Wares during yesterday's evening (with NIGHT shamefully trailing behind, she didn't want to look like a headhunter for god's sake), An seemed to break out into smiles, and though their exchange then had been brief, it was acknowledged and taken in stride all the same.

Well, no matter. There would always be more equipment to farm up, more monsters that needed slaying, more chances for An and Yuki to identify more gear. But before NIGHT could set off on her own gathering spree, the totems they'd been gathering was somewhat of a priority in her mind. It was why she'd gathered with her shield the next day, marking it too late the previous to continue their boss hunting, in the territory of Floor 19's Ralberg.

Truth to be told, the settlement looked rather accommodating. NIGHT wondered if she should move her home here, given the opportunity, before shaking off the thought from her mind.

"Yuki." NIGHT turned to her friend. "Ready to head out?"

Yuki walked quietly with a grin on her face. Ralberg was a nice enough place, but a bit too posh for her tastes. Floor 22 was still one of her favorite floors to date. Interrupted by the familiar voice that she had forgotten was even there, Yuki gave her a smile.

"No need to worry about that." She waved off the comment about Andromeda. "It's truly not her fault that I didn't get any unique items. The game has more of a factor in it when it comes to determining drops. If I was worried about not getting anything unique, than I would be complaining right now. Just gotta keep moving forward, keep grinding and keep leveling."

The game was difficult with her so far. Her build required so much attention right now and it was starting to become slightly draining. It wouldn't be so bad if only she could handle her loot minimum enemies by herself, which she probably could with necessary buffs, but it would take ages to finish combat like that. Plus, that's why she had a friend like Night.

"Yuki, ready to head out?" Said friend asked as it seemed her preparations were all in order. With a nod and an "Nn." Yuki followed her comrade where she may go.

On the topic of their merchant friend, NIGHT could agree. She'd even left the girl a present just to get some much needed experience in, given the opportunity. Everyone's optimism regarding their progression in the game was uplifting, that much NIGHT was sure about, and she fell back onto their wagon's hay with a carefree attitude, letting her companion take the reigns on their rides.

Today's journey was nothing like their escape from the underdark. It was much more laid back, the fields on this floor vast and unobstructed with obstacles. The only intervening force with their expedition was the constant fog of war off in the distance, and even that wasn't much of a hindrance to the travelling players.

"Oh, right," NIGHT piped up, fingers pulling up her trade interface. "Yuki, here."

When her friend responded, she'd sent her a trade request, sending her friend a Wayfinder and a handful of healing crystals from Bistro's stock. "Just in case we get hit. Pop 'em, and we'd both get our health up."

Yuki took the crystals and the artisan's craft, moving the healing songs back into her inventory and trying to make some room for the wayfinder. This boss wasn't supposed to attack them directly or something like that, so her armor was a little useless in this situation. Removing the plating from her currently equipped items she replaced it with her new item. It will increase her luck to help her in the coming fight.

"Thanks, I'll make good use of them. Is this boss going to be hard? The first few we've done haven't been that difficult but I'm expecting it to get more difficult as we continue to go down the line. There's only like three more of these things left isn't there?" The paladin started leading the way, letting her partner guide her as they walked in talked. "Actually, what are we even fighting this time? A snake?! Please no snakes."

A long yawn. The day felt lazy, and whilst her companion seemed to be panicking up front, she'd shifted her arms underneath her head, gazing up towards the sky as the world passed her by. "It's not a snake." Short words of reassurance, but NIGHT couldn't exactly be bothered to budge on their opponent at the moment. According to her notes, they were supposed to be quelling a giant. All she could do was look out for it even in disbelief. "Just keep us moving steady in a straight line, alright?"

And NIGHT had desperately wanted to close her eyes watching the deep blues and white hazes mix in peace. Of course, that wasn't what happened. Just as her vision was fading, her world was immediately cast with a gradient of shadows. When she'd snapped upwards to check her surroundings, she'd sighted the pillarman's leg, a blurry dark figure in the distance.

"There," she called to her friend, pointing towards it in irritation. "Take us towards it, Yuki."

With the reins in hands, Yuki lazily guided the horses in front of her. A wave of relief covered her when Night reassured her that she wouldn't have to fight any snakes. She watched the ground pass by below the horses feet. The sound of galloping had her distracted enough to completely miss the giant, until she felt the vibration of the colossus's feet. She snapped back into position when Night called for her to move forward towards the enemy.

"That looks awful." Reminders of the Absolute Zero and the freezing water was on her mind when she stared at it long enough. "But it isn't snakes. Not sure how I'm going to tank this thing."

Snapping the reins with a loud crack, the horses began galloping a bit faster. It didn't take long for them to catch up with the over-sized golem. "Quick! Jump onto him!" Yuki called out as  they got close enough to jump on. The horses slowly started to go off track without any lead.

"Doesn't it?" NIGHT could completely understand her companion's sentiments as the figure loomed over them completely. She'd risen from her spot, summoning her blade to her side. In a weave of light it answered. Exactly how were they going to take on this thing...?

As Yuki drew them closer, the warrior jumped towards it, following her paladin's calls.

Aaaaaaand that just went our ride home.

The horses would be alright, NIGHT reassured herself. She watched them go past neath her, their forms vanishing behind the giant's form. Her sword was firmly stuck to the giant's sides, though a quick glance upwards informed her not of its health bar -- for some reason, she couldn't even spot it from her angle down below.

"Well, this is troublesome," she muttered, before glancing over to Yuki, as she hauled herself onto her blade to use it as a platform. "It's got weak points somewhere on its body. Let's hope we can get to them before it kicks us off."

Gripping onto the rocky surface of the golem with all her strength, Yuki does her absolute best to pull herself up. Night had already gotten a lead on her, curse heavier armor for weighing her down so much. Halfway up the golems body, the two of them had no trouble. Then the colossus must have taken notice of them finally. It shook devastatingly hard trying to get them off. While Yuki was able to latch her spear into it and hold on, Night wasn't so lucky. She began to plummet down towards the earth.

"Night!" She called out, as her friend began to fall. Latching hard onto her spear, the paladin reached out and caught her friends wrist just barely. The two struggled to keep their grip, but soon Yuki was able to help her get latched onto the golems frame once more when the shaking stopped. "Phew, that was close. You okay?"

Talk about close; she'd barely managed to redirect her fall towards her makeshift platform before she got brutally caught by her friend's merciless grip. "Yeah," NIGHT managed to choke out, eying the ground with a slack jaw as she tried not to think about her comrade's hold loosening. "I'll-- I'll be alright." I hope.

She called for her blade before sticking its edge to the golem's side. It stayed, allowing NIGHT to set her feet onto (somewhat) solid ground again before she continued onwards. Just as her fingers dug into a makeshift crevice on the colossus' rocky surface, the player shifted her gaze to Yuki, watching her reattach herself to the beast. "Thanks for catching me." NIGHT then turned back to the effort of hauling herself upwards, returning to the motions of scaling their target proper. Her speed was slower this ascension, the warrior choosing to focus more on her stability. "We're looking for a larger break in its surface as we climb up. Large blemishes, huge cracks; anything that might suggest a weak point, if you see it don't be afraid to holler."

Finally making it to the Colossus's shoulder, Yuki took a look around for one of the beasts weak points that Night had mentioned. Likely, she could find a weak point on the things head right? As she was about to start climbing, it's neck it's foot connected with the ground. The tremor of just it stomping around was enough to throw her off balance.

Sliding down the arm of the beast, she jammed her weapon into the hand just before she slipped off. Out of some sheer luck she was actually able to find a weak spot there of all places. Once she noticed it, she looked up to Night and had to yell with all her strength to make sure it reached her. "Hey!!! I found one on it's hand! You check the head!!"

Her lance hummed with a pink power again. Furiously, she began jamming the weapon in the weak spot as many times as possible, trying to make sure she got some damage out.

Colossus Weak Point 1: Attacks made: [2/3]

Spoiler

Abilities:

Weak Points: Weak points can be found on both hands, chest, and head. These can only be attacked up to three times before the weak point is gone, and you have to move onto the next one. If you miss attacking it, it will not count as using one of the three chances.
[Note: To climb to a weak point, you must spend 2 Posts climbing to it, and this goes for every weak point]

Oblivious: Since the boss is so large and you have to hold on and climb, players have no way to get space to «Charge» for extra damage, nor can they try to Stealth or Track the creature, as it does not care.

Shake: Every three posts after the boss is found, «Colossus» will "shake" trying to get the player off of its body. Players have to grip onto the creature, rolling an LD to see how strong their grip is on the creature. The next post, «Colossus» will roll his own LD. If his LD is greater than the player, the player is thrown off, dealing 250 Unmitigatable damage to the player, and they have to restart their climb to the next Weak Point.
[Note: LD items can come into effect when rolling, but no skills or mods that give an LD bonus can help]

"Make way...!"

Just as Yuki hammered in the last of her hits upon the weak spot, NIGHT began shifting over to it. The head was a good idea to check for vulnerabilities, though it wouldn't hurt to get one good hit in -- both as a warning to the kaiju and to satisfy a release to her adrenaline rush. Jack's Executioner shone in a weave of light as it graced its owners fingers once more, and the woman reeled back just enough to call forth her sword art.

If this move could break galaxies, NIGHT really wished it would ultimately decimate her target with a single hit. Alas, Aincrad didn't work this way.

A solid white gash was all she left upon the weak point before she sunk the blade into a different part of the creature's body, trying to use it as a platform for support in her climb upwards. "Hope it felt that. I'm going on upwards."

As much as she was incapable of doing any damage to this thing at all, she wasn't just going to sit on the side lines and do nothing for Night. Every little bit of damage she contributes will help her finish the fight. Her lance glowed with a bright pink aura, readying the energy to convert into damage for her next attack.

Even with the constant shaking of the colossus's every step, somehow the paladin is able to remain a grip on the side. She removes her weapon momentarily and jams it back into the weak point. The damage was insignificant again, even with her upgraded sword arts and damage. She was just glad that she had met Night to help her with this stuff.

The moment the damage was made, the hand of the giant began to crack. The stone broke apart and Yuki barely had time to jump and grab the giant's wrist before it fell to the ground. She struggled for a moment and pulled herself up. "Well... This boss sucks..."

Maybe the boss felt that a little too much. For starters, it started to rumble heavily once again. Even with NIGHT's tactic of making a scaffolding where she could along the giant's body with her blade's firm surface, the woman felt that she could topple off of their target at any moment.

Which made scaling this boss a [censored] and a half.

"You focus on the chest," she called out to Yuki just as she'd noticed a weak point on it, though she passed it over in favour of scouring another location. When NIGHT turned to look downwards to check in on her friend's progress, she'd noticed the stone wrist crumbling away. Bet it wouldn't regenerate, either, so they only had a couple more chances to strike at best. "I'll go on ahead."

Another rumble, and she sunk her fingers deeper still into the crevice, her feet barely managing to find a hold on the creature's body.

"A-assuming I can reach it, of course...!"

Soon the Colossus had noticed their presence. It only took the loss of a hand to realize it was being attacked. With a mighty shake, the beast wriggled Night off it's shoulders. Yuki was lucky enough to barely hold on. She gripped on to the best with all her might, but once she noticed her companion plummeting, her body moved faster than her brain. She leapt off the Colossus and wrapped Night in her arms. Turning her body towards the earth, she collides with it first. The metal of her heavy armor clangs against the rocks. A pained groan escapes the paladin's breath upon collision.

Letting go of her friend, Yuki groans in brief pain before sitting up. Looking back at Night. "Oi, are you okay? I was hoping that if I got between you and the ground somehow it would negate some of the fall damage.  We're both alright for now. Let's see if we can catch back up to him."

Alright? NIGHT didn't feel so good.

Not that she was about to fade away or anything just yet, of course.

Part of her didn't feel like moving -- most of her reasoning stemmed from trying to tackle the Colossus at all, her hands deciding that plate armor and grass was much easier to rest against than stone. Still, as Yuki shifted beneath her, NIGHT's realization of her friend's proximity within her personal space was more than jarring, and she got up on her knees, slinking backwards towards the earth.

"Yeah." Hopefully her scowl was enough to kill the red on her face out of embarrassment. On the other hand, her cheeks had accounted for her rage against their target enemy. "Sorry-- are you alright as well? I keep losing my grip on the bastard..." The woman let out a low growl as she got onto her feet once again.

On Yuki's verification of her status, and once the two were ready, NIGHT pushed herself into a sprint to clamber back onto the Colossus' leg. She would be faster this time, much more nimble in her steps. Where she could she set up her support, and continued to do so at nearly every single joint she'd passed through on her way upwards. Hopefully she wouldn't slip this time. NIGHT would rather her friend didn't risk her life to save her.

Yuki herself wasn't as fast as Night was. It took her a moment to catch up with the Colossus and latch on with her weapon embedded into the enemy. Her companion had already seemed to make it half way to the head, where she was going for. Yuki would have to keep up if she wanted to be useful in some way. Forcing herself to keep up, she made her way for the weak point on the Colossus' chest.

Aki cawed as Yuki continued to make her way up. The familiar cheered her on, making sure that Yuki didn't get the worst of herself. With a nod, the paladin smiled at her familiar. "Don't worry about me Aki, I'm fine as long as Night is here. We'll get through this, it's just going to be a little annoying is all." With a caw of confirmation, the tiny Gryphon began to fly around the Colossus' body to locate any more weak points.

Another struggle to stay on. Even though all of the Colossus' movements caused NIGHT a great deal of distress in trying to stay on, this time she'd clung on with the best of her efforts, hoping that the moment would pass soon enough. She'd nearly lost her hold again, feeling her fingers slip off the stone, but by some miracle, ended up on the side of calmness completely unharmed.

So continued her ascent. When she'd reached the Colossus' shoulders, she was capable of spotting its weak point right at the side of its jaw. It took her a few moments to steady herself on its surface, but before long, NIGHT was ready to summon her blade and give the boss hell. She just needed to make sure her companion was doing just fine for a second.

One look over the edge -- oh god NIGHT hope she wasn't going to fall -- and she could spy the dot of pink still latching onto the side of the golem. Good to see it.

The Colossus's shaking continued to be fierce. Now that it had really noticed their presence, it doesn't seem to enjoy their company, especially after having lost one of it's hand to the girls' spear and claymore. Yuki was barely able to keep her grip when it shook ferociously enough to send them both flying. Looking up at Night when she checked to ensure her companion was doing alright at the top, she gave her a thumbs up and continued her way up to the enemies chest.

There wasn't much room for her to find footing on this weak point, and she would sh*t a brick if it's entire torso disintegrated when she broke this party of it's body. Nevertheless, she found places to set her feet and looked at the matching weak point that she could strike. If it didn't send her flying again, she would be able to get at least one attack in and deal a bit of damage.

Mhmm. Yup. The weak point. Time to go break it, because NIGHT could almost feel the tempting of fate by not taking down this boss quickly enough just pulsing below her feet.

In a rush, she'd swerved towards the assembly of cracks, Jack's Executioner glowing a bright white as she slammed its edge into the sore spot. A crushing blow that managed to chip away at its health -- but her sword remained dormant, as though deciding that the woman and her companion would've been fine decimating the creature on their own terms, and not it.

So much for hoping her sword's abilities would break through the Colossus' defenses. During the moment between stasis and movement after NIGHT had completed her sword art, she'd debated on sinking her blade down into the golem's shoulder, just in case she'd fall off soon enough again. Instead, when she'd recovered, NIGHT instinctively righted herself back upwards.

Why would she do that. Cursed action.

Yuki embeds her spear into the colossus's chest, doing her best to hold on to the being as it attempted to shake it's predators off of it's body. She made sure that wouldn't happen again. Soon, the long shake came. The pink haired paladin did her best to clutch on to her spear as the entire body shook ferociously. Luckily, it calmed quickly, making sure that neither of the two girl had fallen off.

Yuki checked to ensure that her friend was still on board, luckily she was, but she seemed to be having trouble keeping her balance again. She would have to do everything in her power not to jump after her if she falls again. It would just be causing damage to the both of them and Night would really only be pissed by it. In all this time thinking, she forgot that she was supposed to be doing damage to the Colossus. Oh yeah, that might have helped.
