ULTRA LUCKY HOT DOG CONSUMED (+3 LD)

Three down, three to go. This one was of particular interested because, as far as Bahr had read in the info broker notes, it had no damage to speak of. It used the players against themselves. Apparently, the only way to damage it was by reaching its weak points - but there was a catch. It would periodically try to shake the player off, and if it was successful, the player would suffer fall damage. If someone died facing it, it was because of themselves - nobody else.

Bahr was intrigued by this mechanic. He had been wondering recently just how much damage he took through actual fault of his own. This seemed like a good litmus test for it. So, we set out into the plains of the nineteenth floor in search of the massive behemoth. Shouldn't be too hard to find a gigantic, barbaric slab of stone marching around the fields, right?

Woah. That was quick.

As soon as Bahr stepped out of the settlement, he found himself face to face with the Colossus. As thought it had been waiting for him, anticipating his arrival. Instinctively, Bahr drew Blinkstrike. "Uhh, heyyy there buddy," he managed with a gulp as he looked up at the titan. It stared back down at him, motionless and silent. "I'm real sorry about this. You seem like a great guy. But, uh, it's a quest and... you know how it goes."

Again, the mob did not respond.

"Alright then."

With all the speed he could manage with his basic gear, he sprinted toward the creature's foot and began his climb, sprinting up the leg until his momentum ran out and he was forced to grasp whatever bulging stone existed to hoist himself up by hand. The creature, though it saw Bahr doing so, seemed not to care. Or, perhaps, it was just a tad slower to react than animals of Bahr's size and stature.

It was kind of the monster to remain still, because it made it a lot easier for Bahr to scale. He wasn't a rock climber, by any means, so it was a bit of a struggle even with the beast being stationary. If it were moving, Bahr had no doubt that he would have slipped and fallen at least twice over by now. Which made him a tad nervous, because he knew what was coming. At any moment, the beast could shake, and that could be the end of it. Bahr would fall, take damage, and be forced to start over from scratch. It wasn't a particularly fun thing to think about, so he tried to push it out of his mind and concentrate on climbing.

Eventually, he made it to what he could only imagine was a weak point. A cavity in the stone that revealed some sort of mushy innards in its chest area. Here, he stopped, grabbed as tight a hold as he could manage, and held on for dear life. If it knew he was approaching one of its weak points, he had to anticipate a shake. So, he opted to stay put until it had made its move.

Just as Bahr had anticipated, the creature did indeed choose then to shake. But being that he had taken the extra time to secure himself before it had made its move, he was able to stay anchored and prevent himself from falling.

But Christ, was it terrifying. Dear lord. You don't know true terror until you've seated yourself atop a gigantic stone monster and it begins wiggling around. You feel like your entire world it coming down around you - or at least trying to. But despite the sheer terror it instilled, it was not adequate to budge Bahr from his post. He had survived, and the Colossus was now open to attack.

"Alright, you over sized turd," Bahr chortled as he pried his stiff fingers from the rock they clung to, wrapping instead around the hilt of Blinkstrike. "Let's see what you're really made of." Probably just more rocks, honestly.

Bahr charged up his Sword Art, reared his blade back for the attack, and then... Couldn't. For whatever reason, he couldn't bring himself to follow through. After a moment, the Sword Art expired and the sword's glow grew dull, leaving behind a confused Bahr who didn't quite understand what was happening. Was it nerves? The heights? Fear of stability loss, resulting in a fall from unprecedented heights? Even he didn't know. It wasn't like he would die if he fell from that height.

... Right?

I mean, he couldn't, right? Surely people had fallen off of this thing already. There was no way that all of them had died. Right? At least not after one fall? The hope was that whatever damage he sustained, he could heal off with Holy Blessing and Battle Healing as he made his ascent back up the monster. Realistically, there was no way he could die unless he let it kill him.

So why was he so nervous? He just had to keep his eye on the target and commit. So in accordance with this, he reeled his blade back for another go, charged it up with a Galaxy Destroyer, and let it rip.

Miraculously, he hit. Even more miraculously, he didn't fall off, despite the shock to his stability and the resulting undulating of the creature's body as it recoiled in pain at the introduction of his blade. No doubt, the damage he had inflicted here was significant, draining off over a quarter of the monster's full life. Bahr knew that he had Heavy Momentum to thank for that, but hoped that with another three good strikes he could see this thing off for good.

But now that he'd struck it, he knew that another shake would be coming. All he could do was brace for it just as he had the time before, and hope for the best.

And then, the tremor struck just as Bahr had predicted. It was much more violent this time, but Bahr was emboldened by his success at remaining aboard the creature from its last shake, as well as his success in maintaining his grip through his attack. He held on with every molecule of strength the muscle fibers of his hand would allow, and when it was all over, he still continued to clench the stone. Not out of fear, but because his hands had become so stiff that it was now difficult to release their grip.

One way or another, however, he managed to pry his fingers from the rock and yet again grab hold of Blinkstrike. If he was quick, he might be able to get a couple of attacks out before the damn thing shook again. Maximum damage - that was the goal. Dawn's Demise absolutely would have been better for this endeavor, but his inventory was sealed now. He would have to make due with what he had brought.

I looked at other threads that people have been doing for this quest and realized that most people are just doing the roll for grip and the Colossus shake on the same post, so I'm switching to that format moving forward lolol.

Blinkstrike reared back, adopted its signature crimson sheen and delved back into the cavity in the beast's chest. It cried out in agony as another tremor rippled through its body, but Bahr remained steadfast. As pleased as he was to see that he had landed a successful attack, he would be lying if he said he wasn't a little disappointed in the volume of damage he had delivered. Without Heavy Momentum to back up his swing, he hadn't managed to put the damn thing in the yellow yet. However, this mean he probably had at least three more attacks ahead of him until he took the thing down.

Which meant more gripping.

His fingers had never been so stiff in his entire life. And to think, this was just the Aincrad version of rock climbing fatigue. Was the system exaggerating the sensation, or was it dulled like most other uncomfortable feelings in this game?

Another Sword Art, another hit. Although, as its body experienced yet another tremor, Bahr noticed something a bit different. The opening in its rocky flesh that he had been taking advantage of actually sealed itself up. The information he'd gotten from his broker hadn't said anything about that. And now, with another massive shake on the way, Bahr had to consider the prospect of climbing his way to a different weak spot.

He hadn't even seen any others while he was on the ground! The reason he'd gone to the one on its chest was because it was so open and vulnerable. Obvious. As bahr gripped whatever stone he could find and prepared for the worst, he racked his brain trying to visualize where another weak point might be. It's feet? No, he'd scaled them and hadn't seen anything. It's hands maybe? That was unsafe, though.

Maybe it's head? Yeah, that sounded just about right.

This time as it shook, it was far more violent than any time before. Bahr had a sneaking suspicion that perhaps the thing was becoming a bit perturbed by him. Not only had he managed to deal enough damage to bring the thing into the deep yellow, but it hadn't managed to get the pesky speck of red off of its hide since it had first crawled aboard. Bahr knew that if an insect decided to crawl all over him and slowly but surely drain his health to nothing, and he couldn't manage to get the thing off, he'd be a little cranky, too.

But this was a mob. In Aincrad. So, it kinda just had to deal with it.

Yeah.

Anyways, Bahr actually managed to hang on. Again. And as the undulating subsided, he pried his fingers from the stone and looked up at the thing's face. He couldn't see the top of its head from where he was, but he assumed that there had to be a weak spot up there. It would have to be his next target.

So he began climbing. And climbing. And climbing. Damn, this thing was big. Bahr probably hadn't physically exerted himself this hard any time in recent memory. Certainly, at some point in his past, he had to have put as much effort into something else. But, try as he may, he just couldn't remember what that something was supposed to be. The memory was probably repressed due to trauma, or something. Bahr was a fit man, but nobody should be expected to pull off a Herculean feat like this, especially alone.

Though, in the end, it was his fault that he was alone.

Didn't matter. He'd come here to do a job, and there was no way he was backing down at this point. He'd come too far for second guessing himself, and he'd been doing a fabulous job so far, anyways. If he just pressed on a little longer, and kept climbing, he knew he could turn this thing into just another mountain on Floor 19.

That is, if there actually was a weak spot on its head.

And there had to be, right? If there was one on its chest. It was the only thing that made sense. But, just in case, Bahr looked to his sides as he made the perilous ascent to the top, squinting toward its hands in an effort to discern whether or not there were weak spots there as well. To his mixed delight and dismay, he found that there were. One the one hand (pun intended), that meant he knew where to go if his climb to the monster's head proved fruitless. On the other hand (pun still intended), that meant he had to go out on a limb (pun maybe intended) and put himself on the most mobile piece of the mobile rock.

Perilous indeed. But Bahr was no coward. He'd already had to run from one mob this week, and there was not way he was about to run from another. Besides, even if he did fall, he had his Holy Blessing and Battle Healing to heal him before he fell again. There was no way he could die unless he let the mob kill him.

At least, that's what he had to keep telling himself.

Just as Bahr reached what would have been the creature's collarbone, it began to shake again. Bahr hadn't taken note of the time that had passed since the last quake, and wasn't as prepared when it began to wiggle this time. Through a mixture of endurance, fear, and sheer willpower, Bahr actually managed to hang on again for like the umpteenth time in a row. What were the chances of that? Not high, likely.

But he'd done it. Assuming there was a weak point just beyond, he practically had it in the bag at this point. Get up there, thwack it a couple times, and watch the Jenga tower fall.

Except...

Wait a second. He was one the damn Jenga tower. What the hell was supposed to happen to him when the monster died? He'd just fall with it? What kinda of quest was that???

Jesus. He really hadn't thought this through.

Bah. Whatever. He literally didn't have the time to sit there and mull it over. If he didn't act fast, this thing was going to shake again, and Bahr doubted that his luck in staying aboard the damn thing could last out for much longer. It was probably a mathematical improbability - or something. Yeah, that was the reasoning he was going to go with, just so he could actually get his ass in gear and beat this thing.

The reality of the situation was that Bahr was going to fall at some point. He'd come to accept that. And he could either fall because it had shaken him off, then have to climb the entire damn thing againor, he could fall because he'd defeated it and it was crumbling. So, opting for the latter, he revealed Blinkstrike once more, charged up a Galaxy Destroyer, and let it rip against the weak point he'd found on the back of the boss' head.

There was a tremor to follow the attack, but it was weak and faint. A cursory glance at Colossus' health bar revealed that it was in pretty rough shape. It had dipped into the red and, if Bahr was eyeballing it right, was only about one hit away from total annihilation. Everything had gone perfectly up until this point, and Bahr only hoped that it would end that way, too.

If it's gonna be the last hit, let's make it a good one.

Bahr put everything he had into that swing. He couldn't allow himself a moment of hesitation. Not for the sake of the creature, not for the sake of his fear of falling, not for nervousness that Blinkstrike might slip out of his hands, plummet to the earth and skewer some poor soul waking along down below. He had to commit.

So he did. And from then onward, Colossus was committed to falling.

The way down was... terrifying.

There's really not way to describe something like that. To really understand, you simply need to be in the thick of it. No verbiage will ever capture the raw rush and terror of being on that moment. You have absolutely no sense of control over what you're doing, or where you're going. You have no control over the debris that's seemingly floating all around you, either big or small. You have no control over whether you get luck and make it out, or a smattering of gigantic rocks pulverizes you to azure dust on the way down. You have absolutely no control over any of it.

It's equally as horrifying as it is... a relief. A release from the need to be in control. An involuntary release, mind you. But a release nonetheless, and one Bahr hadn't realize he'd needed so much until it had happened to him.

Somewhere in the midst of it all, everything went black. During this time, Bahr wasn't thinking anything. But, somewhere, lurking in the back of his mind, he had the certain understanding that he was dead. That he'd passed on, and there was nothing left of him to think or feel anything. The ultimate release from control. And as comforting as it was, in its own weird way, it was also... sad. Regrettable. Emotions that somehow pierced through the curtain of unconsciousness and got through to him when nothing else could.

He didn't want to die. Not yet.

Seems he'd need to stay in control for at least a little bit longer. In accordance with this singular sentiment, he used whatever minuscule traces of control he had left to bring himself back from the brink and claw his way back to consciousness. It wasn't easy, and he could feel his body fighting him, but bit by bit he climbed out of the hole of death just as he'd scaled the hide of Colossus.

And then, light.

Jesus. It had gotten that low? It was the first thing that Bahr noticed when he finally managed to open his eyes again. He lay atop a gigantic pile of rubble - the remains of the creature he had slain, inexplicably turned into a mountainous mass of rock instead of simply dissipating into polygonal fractals destined for oblivion. Every other mob he'd ever faced had done so. So why hadn't this one?

And if, upon its death, it became a permanent fixture of the environment, where were the other mountains that bore its resemblance? Bahr sat up, wincing as a large pillar of stone that rested over his legs prevented total range of movement, and scanned the surrounding area looking for any signs of other Colossuses that had been obliterated. He knew that he couldn't have been the first - other people had the statue. But try as he might, he couldn't find any sign of other Colossus corpses.

The environment in general was, admittedly, extremely mountainous. He supposed that the rationale could be made that every mountain in the region was a Colossus body, but that just seemed a little unreasonable. They were all covered from head to toe in butt loads of flora, as though they'd bee a fixture of the floor for hundreds of years. Trees like that don't grow overnight, and this quests hadn't been out that long. There was just no way it was possible.

Except that there was. They were in a video game, after all. Anything was possible, really, so long as Cardinal wished it.

So Bahr shrugged, heaved the stone off of his legs, and stood with a loud, unflattering grunt. As he stretched, he surveyed the landscape on the way down. Not good. It'd be an hour or two at least before he would be able to make it to the bottom. But what was the rush? He had his entire day ahead of him. In fact, he figured after he was done with this, he would head back down to his island on Floor 16 and get some work done on his new house.

Yeah. That sounded like a splendid idea. There was still plenty of work to be done out there. And by plenty of work, I mean all of it. He hadn't even started yet. He hadn't even collected the tools that he needed to start it yet. He still had virtually an entire island of flora to clear out before he could even break ground on the house itself. And with how much time he'd spent taking down Colossus? There weren't many daylight hours left.

But he didn't care. It was his project. Something to do with his downtime. And compared to scaling a skyscraping behemoth and attacking the back of its neck just so you could take a ride with it back down to earth once it was dead was waaaayyyyy more tiring than clearing out some trees and brush. The latter would be relaxing in comparison.

So, with a content inhale, he started on his trek down the mountain. The quicker he got back to the settlement, the quicker he could get to work on his new home.
