It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, however. Without being super focused on grinding all the time, Oscar had more time to enjoy the little things. Mostly that entailed long walks and just being lazy as hell. He was pretty sure that if he could gain weight in Aincrad, he would have developed something of a gut. Thank God for the snapshot the system took on the first day. Oscar shuddered to think about the state his body was in now in the real world. He'd prided himself on his fitness, but he was pretty sure that he was all skin and bones at this point. But no use thinking about that. He had a quest to do and monsters to slay! Maybe also a Heart would find its way into his possession as well. Who knows? Anything could happen! Oscar made his way up to Floor 19 from his home outside of Deepedge and scarfed down his buffs. Excellent. This meant that Ki'raion would be at its full power. Oscar really didn't want to waste his time on a weak enemy. He followed his quest marker out into the field, making sure to give any enemies that looked aggressive a wide berth. There was really no point in fighting more than he absolutely had to. Eventually, he came across the boss. A lion-flower-lizard-thingy. It was sunning itself on a rock, absorbing rays with its big plant-like mane. Oscar was ready to mess that whole plan right on up. He rushed in, axe at the ready, and swung with all of his might. He missed his mark. Tesseleth's Fury clanged against the rock that Ki'raion was resting on, disturbing its blissful relaxation time. Oscar ducked out of the way as it swiped at him, just narrowly dodging the creature's powerful tail. Ki'raion rose to its feet and growled at Oscar. With nothing else better to do, Oscar growled back.

Tesseleth's Fury erupted in black flame as he sliced through the creature's midsection. A burst of shadowy energy rippled out from the point of impact, putting even more force behind the attack. In a single blow, Ki'raion's health bar tanked to nearly half. Still blinded by pain, Ki'raion lashed out wildly. Oscar found it absurdly easy to dance out of the way of the attack. He put some distance between himself and the beast. He was pretty sure that the creature couldn't possibly hurt him that badly. Even still, some of the rumored mechanics gave him pause. More annoying than anything else, really. Even still, it was best not to get caught out. He had the advantage in this fight. No sense letting that slip away simply because he got impatient. Slow and steady wins the race and all that. As long as he kept his distance and focused on keeping up the pressure, he would be alright.

He kept his distance, waiting for Ki'raion to open itself up to attack. When it did, Oscar was there with the punish. Once more, black flames cloaked Tesseleth's Fury as he drove the blade deep into the creature's hide. It howled in pain, fatigue showing as it's health bar hit the red. It lashed out at Oscar, less out of aggression and more out of survival. He easily danced away from the powerful tail and razor-sharp claws. This battle was going so smoothly that Oscar almost felt sorry for the thing. Almost. At the end of the day, it was just a collection of data that Oscar needed to hit until it quit moving. But he couldn't be too hasty. The first rule of dealing with a cornered animal was to keep your distance until you were ready to finish it. And when you were ready, to finish it with a single motion. No opportunity for reprisal.

Oscar stepped forward tentatively, his weapon at the ready. The final blow was always the most nerve-wracking. Even in a fight that had gone smooth as silk, there was always the concern that the final blow was where everything could go wrong. Oscar lived in fear of a reversal at the end of battle. Almost having won, but something going wrong to where he completely loses his advantage. So he approached the wounded and weakened beast cautiously. He kept his eye on Ki'raion's tail as he inched closer and closer. Once the distance had been almost completely closed, Oscar lurched forward. Tesseleth's Fury was buried in the creature's skull, driving its head to the ground. Streams of data poured out of the gash when he removed his axe. Without any pomp or fanfare, Ki'raion fractured and then shattered into a thousand fractal shards.

That thing had been a weird-ass enemy. But, much like every other quest boss that Oscar had encountered, it went down super easily. Tesseleth's Fury - while powerful - also made for stupid-easy combat. Oscar decided it might be a good idea to get himself a different weapon just to start challenging himself again. Maybe even try his hand at running a vanity weapon. Somehow he figured that it wouldn't make much difference. His base damage was already significant enough to carve through hordes of monsters with nary a scratch on him. Had he really reached the pinnacle of power in this game? Sure, there were more levels to be had but what did they do? More health and energy? With that realization, it was really difficult for him to get the drive to continue leveling. Sure, more health meant that he was less likely to die, but when most things died in two or three hits anyway, he could have half the health he did and wouldn't miss it. It was a wonder after so many trips that the chalk that he'd received from the old man hadn't been completely worn out. One thing he noticed when he entered was that the entirety of the floor was plunged into an endless night. No stars shone in the sky, no moon could be seen hanging above the labyrinth walls. The unnatural darkness was quite unnerving, but Oscar pressed forward. As he wound his way through the maze, he noticed his marks from previous trips were there as well. He deviated from those paths, heading into uncharted parts of the maze. Luckily, any horrors lurking within held off on attacking him. He ventured deeper into the Endless Maze with utmost caution. No sense losing his head because he got in a hurry. If the old man had taught him anything, it was that tragedy can strike at any moment.

He kicked off the ground, pushing himself backwards. Using his momentum, he somersaulted backwards onto his feet and swung his axe up into a ready position. Oscar got his bearings just in time to witness a brutish minotaur wrenching its weapon out of the wall. Rage danced in its eyes as it charged at Oscar, both horns down ready to gore him. Oscar stood his ground and swung Tesseleth's Fury with all of his might. His axe clipped the minotaur in the jaw, throwing off its momentum and sending it flying face first into the wall to Oscar's left. The blow caused its health bar to tank. He swore and dove forward into a forward roll. He just barely got out of the way in time. At this point, the other Minotaur had recovered from the dazing strike Oscar had delivered moments prior and started charging him again. His feet found purchase on the ground and he spun around, letting fly another Explode Catapult as he rose to his feet. The charging Minotaur stopped dead in its tracks and shattered while the other was blasted back a few paces from the force of the blow. That gave him the much-needed breathing room to gather the loot from the first Minotaur before turning his attention back to the other.

Oscar took a steadying breath as he collected his loot. That had been more trouble than he had imagined it would have been. The stories he'd heard about the Endless Maze hadn't been fiction. If he'd been even slightly less attentive, he wouldn't have his head right now. It should have gone without saying that such luck wouldn't hold out indefinitely. And so Oscar was left to wander the Labyrinth until he found what he was looking for or got bored and left. Considering how stubborn he was, it wasn't likely that he'd leave of his own volition without finding what he came for. With it being established that he either finds what he's looking for or he dies, Oscar was able to move just a bit more confidently. His previous encounter with the Minotaur had told him that although combat could come at you with a quickness, the monsters here weren't any more threatening than they would be on the other floors. The lakes were the only places in the entire maze where one could rest and take a load off. After the encounter with the Minotaurs, he definitely needed just a little time to calm his nerves. It was difficult to remain calm when his entire environment was out to do him in. If he lost his head, he lost his life. It was that simple. Best to seize any opportunity to make sure his head was on straight before venturing back out into the maze. Though he would be following his marks back, anything could happen. The subterranean network of caves was a welcome sight after the dark and gloomy maze. Just as he had done so many times before, Oscar headed out of town to the place that the giant spiders were the thickest. Almost immediately upon arriving, he was beset by the creatures. They were a bit larger than their kin. That meant that they had more health and, thus, would be far more generous with the loot they dropped. Oscar fired off an Explode Catapult, shaving off over a third of their health in a single stroke. The spiders counterattacked, two of them managing to land hits on him. His health dipped marginally. Nothing a little Battle Healing couldn't recover. He'd hurt them far more than they had hurt him, after all. The numbers favored him on this one. A wide smile stretched across his features. It was just Oscar and the spiders. And their pockets. He launched another Explode Catapult, bringing the lot of them down very close to death. The spiders, again, countered. He hadn't even gone through half of his energy bar on the first group. Finesse had proven itself to be a worthwhile choice of skill. His energy costs on Area-of-Effect attacks were absolutely astronomical, but Finesse brought them down to a much more manageable level. Two consecutive Fallen procs resulted in the death of one of the spiders in an explosion of dark energy. Oscar quickly collected his loot. That wound up being a very basic mistake - one that he had thought he'd long since trained himself out of. As he was collecting his Col, Materials, and other items, one of the spiders sank its fangs into his should. He growled at the sudden pressure and grabbed the spider's head with his bare hand. Tearing the arachnid away from his body, Oscar then slammed it into the dirt where it collapsed prone. The other two spiders made token gestures to attack him but those fell flat. Dodge first, then loot, Oscar reminded himself as he stepped back and readied his axe again. Not like it really mattered. His health was still almost full. Even still, good habits shouldn't be broken simply because one can deal with the consequences. Certain consequences were best avoided altogether.

The blade of his axe carved through the spiders like a hot knife through butter. Simultaneously, the arachnids shattered. In their wake were three glimmering spots dancing upon the ground. Upon interacting with them, Oscar collected the last of his loot and was ready to head on home. He took his time meandering through the tunnels. This whole outing had made him realize just how much stronger he'd become. In game and mentally. There was a time, after all, where he couldn't go off on his own and grind for fear of where his head would go when faced with such sheer boredom. Thankfully, that didn't seem to be the case. He could cleave his way through vast swaths of monsters that once gave him pause and interpret it as the catharsis that it was. It was definitive progress that even Oscar couldn't deny. Oscar 0 Posted June 28, 2020 Author #20 Share Posted June 28, 2020 He breathed a sigh of relief as he cross the threshold back into town. Grinding mobs was nice and all, but there was just something about being out in the wilds that kept one on their guard constantly. Being inside of a safe zone was about the only time one was able to breathe easily. He made his way back to the Teleportation Platform and headed back down to Floor Seven. A short jaunt later and he was stepping into the foyer of his home. He placed his axe down in the corner next to the door and removed his coat. The sun was setting and it was about time for dinner. Oscar wondered what Cordelia was up to. Ever since she'd opened her shop, they'd just not had the same schedules. Oscar let out a yawn and headed for the kitchen. He took one look at the room and shook his head. He really just wanted to get some sleep. Food would be there in the morning.
