NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #61 Share Posted August 8, 2020 Unfortunately, a good pair of players would've also saved that stun for a move such as the following, whereby the guardian clamps its jaw around the blade of one of its attackers and sends the weapon flying across the room. Marquis watches in vain just as K9 swings his cleaver overhead, and the guardian shifts its head ever so slightly to dodge, then snag his steel in the overture. It wrestles with the man for control over his weapon -- when he fails to hang on to its length with enough force, the devil sends the hapless player to the nearest stone wall, before gnawing on his precious possession with a fury. It was either its teeth or the weapon's durability, but the damage had been done. One long snap, and the blade was broken beyond repair. [Marquis]: What?! What was salvageable as materials scattered to the floor just as NIGHT and DAY finish up their combat against the sahagin. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #62 Share Posted August 8, 2020 [Marquis]: You didn't tell us it could do that?! To a stunned Marquis, the player having her back turned was perfect timing for the sea devil to wind up yet another attack. And yet its strike came to a halt with DAY's sudden involvement, the entity shoving themselves in harm's way the moment the beast showed interest in attempting to destroy yet another player's weaponry. The light in its maw was near indestructible -- if it wasn't, Cardinal would know something was off. And yet the devil sinks its teeth into the seething heat; the faintest hope that its bone could withstand the built in code in the system. Truly, it was one entity of little mind. On the other hand, DAY knows better than to let the guardian sit idle. [DAY]: It's distracted! As NIGHT shuts down the last of the sahagin from its wake, she bursts off her position to race towards the guardian, standard blade in hand. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #63 Share Posted August 8, 2020 The sting to its side only did so much to cause it to recoil. It still stands, the Sea Devil Guardian upon its four feet, though from its careless shake from the blow NIGHT delivered earlier, its health bar was starting to show signs of further wear than before. Marquis prepares another strike, edging carefully around its side. Meanwhile, a grumbling K9 starts to pick himself up from the edge of the room. [K9]: I didn't know that's what it was supposed to do! The guardian eyes the shifting katana user, just as much as DAY scoots over to remain in its vision, careful pools of blue staring back at its iridescent, feral counterpart. With another lunge, an opening is revealed upon its other side -- the Gemini holds its jaw in place with their sword, and Marquis dives underneath its form, blade cutting across the creature's belly firmly. NIGHT delivers a set of blows, seemingly missing her mark. They land and crash against its decorations -- skin, wings, the works -- and promptly remove what appeared to be its body armor from its form. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #64 Share Posted August 8, 2020 They fail to stagger the beast this time. The guardian struggles against the might of its opposing construct, and yet it can't seem to muster the strength to tear the blade away from their hold. It does the next best thing it could do in its situation -- headbutt the user behind the sword. It does not succeed in doing so, instead taking yet another strike from DAY's own counter attack in its dive. The guardian tumbles to its side, before pushing itself off the side of a set of stairs leading upwards on the far end of the building, and gunning for the two damage dealers completely left untouched. NIGHT shimmies out of the way in time and lands two more blows against the guards on its back. Meanwhile, Marquis' display of leaps pulls through for her when she hops onto the struggling beast's form and draws another line down its body, a horizontal mark of white across its side. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #65 Share Posted August 8, 2020 When the guardian rises again, its health is a firm sad green, and brittle fragments remain of what appendages it once had to guard its face, its limbs, its back. The creature growls once more, getting ready to jump, and the three combatants remain on alert. It's only when it leaps over the group and races up the stairs to the next floor do they stop to take a moment's breather. [Marquis]: That... that thing can shatter equipment pieces? [K9]: I guess only if it's on the lowest durability possible -- eurgh, like mine was... K9 trundles forward to collect the fragments of his weapon, as NIGHT shoots an uneasy look towards DAY. Her weapon was in fine condition all thanks to the entity's intervention, hers and Marquis' own, in fact. The player knew she hadn't much to worry about since the blade she wielded this day was completely vanity-based. It still worried her to be out of commission for a fight, however. Enough to start the process of forging another similar to it, but it needed an experienced hand to be able to see the craft through. [K9]: Of course, the last time we'd faced the thing, it didn't happen... K9 turns around to the party, glancing towards the stairs for a beat. [K9]: Can you three take care of it alone? [Marquis]: We can try. I really don't feel safe tackling it when it can shatter our items like that though. [K9]: That's alright. But I wouldn't let only two players face it alone. Um... Let's see... A menu drops in front of him as K9 summons his contact list to send out a message. NIGHT remembers to check her inventory when she spots the interface pull open. [K9]: There. That should get his attention, I think. I'll head back to the boat in the mean time -- you three can stay here and wait for back up, if you're keen on challenging that thing. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #68 Share Posted August 8, 2020 [♫] The stairs end quickly. At the final floor, the tower houses an empty stage for the adventurers' proceeding conflict. It's darker than the previous rooms. The ground is adorned with dust, broken eggshells, and dried seaweed. A small barricade of crumbling stone bricks is piled near the opening of the stairwell. At the far side of the circular arena, a large moss bedding can be seen. Their target, the devil guardian stands tall in front of it, watching the duo finally step into the edge of its domain. It greets them with a roar, and the sound bounces off the interior of their set. NIGHT winces. [NIGHT]: Think they'll get here in time? [DAY]: Is that a challenge? DAY prepares their blade just as NIGHT readies her own. [NIGHT]: We can try. [DAY]: ... On your mark. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #69 Share Posted August 8, 2020 NIGHT's hop over the obstruction allows her to tear away one of the bricks from its stack -- her stats lend her the promise of handling one with ease. She tosses it towards the guardian with vague precision, and it snaps at the projectile as it dives towards her position, the player sliding underneath its assault and ripping into its underbelly just as easily as Marquis once did. The brick shatters against the might of its teeth. The beast barely gets a chance to try gnashing against NIGHT with her distraction. It's about to whirl around to chase her, the player having landed near its hind quarters and making quick work of the last of its armor, when a flare of white and gold reaps the air ahead of themselves and promptly sends their blade edge first down the top of its snout. Where there was once a crack on its head plate left by K9, the piece is broken entirely, its fragments sparkling and sifting through space. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #70 Share Posted August 8, 2020 Only one more piece was left dangling on its frame -- which meant that the guardian was well exposed at this point. NIGHT deals hell upon the scale and fur of its body while she rounds it to reach the last darkened carapace near its front limbs, leaving a fracture in it to be emphasized upon later. DAY bounces off the front of the creature as it howls in frustration. The entity takes their breathing space and bounces upon the stone wall she'd hopped over, parrying their snaps and clawing with the flat of her light saber. The sound of battle does not escape the lower floors. There is a rush of footsteps as the battle wages on, and what appears by the stairwell is a mess of purple and blue. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #71 Share Posted August 8, 2020 He starts off into the fray, leaving his lagging companion, seiche, behind. [seiche]: I brought adds! It's not my fault! seiche properly enters the field through the gap in the barriers. The small pack of monsters that follow him trace his path, and DAY gives them a moment's glance as the guardian rears up on its hind legs, paw extended for a swipe. They dance off the barricade, taking the chance to tag in a swirling Cyclone in their descent, and allows the beast to smash nothing but air in their leave. [DAY]: It's low, clean up! NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #72 Share Posted August 8, 2020 It crumples to the floor, the shrub unfurling sadly, deflating, before bursting like a bubble into dust. seiche pulls the rest of the enemies towards the other side of the room to clear up space for the party's main combatants. DAY and Weaver trade blows with the guardian, the Gemini primarily playing distraction and leading the beast around the room. The player growls as he misses a swipe against the boss' hind legs, shooting himself towards the front of the devil, teeth showing, jaw locked. [Weaver]: I can't hit him...! His fury feeds his attacks with power -- one moment, the guardian had eyes only for the rolling star, the next it snaps its head towards the enraged player, eyes flaring with a vitriolic energy that could only be matched by the sole player it bears down against. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #73 Share Posted August 8, 2020 seiche panics. NIGHT reels back, tracing his stare in concern for his despair. Her eyes widen, and she sends a Tempest flying towards the guardian's sides. The shockwave is enough to halt its lock momentarily, but it doesn't withdraw its bite from Weaver's arm. He growls as he shifts his arm about in its jaw, before finally ripping it out of the creature's hold. [Weaver]: Hungry?! Eat this--! The discharge of energy from his singular punch against its snout sends a blast of fire to scatter across its scales. The cinders bounce and sizzle off effortlessly, but those that leap further set the beast's fur ablaze, and that was just the beginning for the man's anger and revenge. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #74 Share Posted August 8, 2020 The guardian's side lands against the lighthouse's interiors, barely regaining its movements long enough to land from the player's hardy attack. Weaver chases its face with his gauntlet, claw ripping hard into the beast's cheek bone along its snout. Its vision is a whirl as the violets from Weaver come into view, the player trying to burn his scowl into the entity's memory. [Weaver]: Don't take me for that loser. Got that?! He bashes its head into the wall again, before charging up a final sword art to finish the boss off. The glow rumbles in his arm and legs -- a leap into the air, followed by two sweeping kicks and a fatal punch. It seems that Weaver never needed the help to demolish the guardian after all. Though, to be fair, he did come into a fight when it was half-cleared. As he lands from his delivered strikes, NIGHT and seiche work together to cull the rest of the enemies still lurking in the room. Spoiler ID: 164520 | BD: 5 (1, +4) | MD: 3 (5, -2) NIGHT missed! NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #75 Share Posted August 8, 2020 DAY's weapon shimmers out of existence the moment the beast pitters lifelessly into fragments. Their gaze travels over to the pack of dark themed adventurers, who finish their lesser-monster slaying only a moment away from Weaver's kill. NIGHT lets out an exhale when she's pummeled the Sahagin sufficiently enough, letting seiche rip into the fish man with a swipe of his shield. It buckles, before fading away into dust. The trio look over to Weaver's back, tension stuck in the air. The player doesn't move for a long time, and in his silence, DAY and NIGHT shoot looks over to seiche -- one with a blank, lost stare, the other of uncertain suspicion. The swordsman attempts to shrug it off with a smile, but it is clear what they expect from him. So he walks, with a grimace. His sword finds place in his scabbard right before he reaches Weaver. It's hard for him to find the words. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #76 Share Posted August 8, 2020 [seiche]: Y'know, it can always be repaired... [Weaver]: That idiot could've been dead meat by now. No weapons mean no chances at survival. And that rat wasn't willing to go break a rock for a good minute. How's that for defense?! Weaver spins on his heel, eyes burning wild. He jabs a nail over to the two players in the distance, one barely looking up from her inventory. [Weaver]: He got lucky you two were there. And Marquis...! They're both newer at this, too! seiche folds his arms, leaning backwards with a rough smile. [seiche]: You know how he gets sometimes... [Weaver]: He can't seriously be that oblivious, can he? A moment away from your sights, and he's lost his weapon already? The darker swordsman sighs and scratches the back of his head. His eyes are distant as he speaks. [seiche]: Sometimes that's just how things go. You know if he'd volunteered to go alone there'd be trouble. Spoiler ID: 164522 | LD: 22 (12, +8+2) | Dungeon Search: Advanced Dungeon found. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #77 Share Posted August 8, 2020 [Weaver]: So that's why you always keep him around? Weaver sneers, folding his arms. seiche gives him a wry smile. [seiche]: It's better if more of us make it out of here alive, right? The man has no response to his companion. He grunts, to which seiche assumes is an agreement to his point. The player smiles, and places a hand on his hip. A glance tells him that there might be something to sweeten Weaver's mood. He gestures to the far side of the room. [seiche]: Look, if it makes you feel any better, there's a treasure chest in it for you that K9 didn't get his hands on. Weaver growls. [Weaver]: I didn't clear the dungeon. [NIGHT]: Yeah, we-- [seiche]: I'm sure he won't miss anything from it. The two other players look at seiche with various degrees and flavours of disbelief. DAY examines the differences between the two, completely tapped out from the duo's conversation. Spoiler > Two turns have passed since combat. EN has been restored to full. NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #78 Share Posted August 8, 2020 [seiche]: You can let this one slide, can't you DAY? Weaver's expression switches to one of disappointment. His seething stops just long enough to merge with disdain. DAY responds in a deadpanned manner, as NIGHT begins to look horrified. [DAY]: I'm DAY. Offended is more like it. [NIGHT]: R-Rude...! [seiche]: Err-- NIGHT, I guess? Haha-- sorry, sorry... His waves and sheepish look does nothing to slow NIGHT's aggravation towards the man. Weaver takes a look over to the chest, rimmed in a pleasant gold hue, lit up with sparkles upon its metal from the window that sits above it, letting some of the isle's ambient light in. He turns to the group with annoyance, before hollering for them to halt their squabbling. [Weaver]: Hey, airhead. seiche is the one who turns. [Weaver]: You wanna let those two look at what we've got or not? seiche shrugs with a vague smugness. He gestures for DAY and NIGHT to fall to Weaver's side.
NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #79 Share Posted August 8, 2020 Weaver pipes up as the two approach him. [Weaver]: Don't suppose you two have any keys, do you? [NIGHT]: We're not treasure hunters. [DAY]: I'd rather not touch the stuff. He shrugs, eyelids lowering. His arms extend almost as a show of challenge, and his scowl still remains as he dispenses a golden key from his gauntlet. [Weaver]: Fine by me, then. NIGHT is more surprised by the intricacy of Weaver's weapon. The bow spins around his index before he jams the key into the lock of the chest. With a huff, he wriggles it a few times before pulling the item out, and it crumbles into ashes the moment it leaves the chest's hold. He picks the seal open with a nail, and it unfolds before his touch. A look over his shoulder invites the duo to watch, NIGHT shuffling closer as he raises it's lid with a rough shove of his hand. Inside the chest...
NIGHT 0 Posted August 8, 2020 Author #80 Share Posted August 8, 2020 | The Bumblebee NIGHT offers to split the loot between Weaver and Marquis both. She neglects to tell him about K9's share in the spoils -- though her own portion of the dividends is funneled to the sulking man in secret. She finds him in the ship's interior, looking over the scattered pieces upon the low wooden round table. His arms are folded, and he doesn't give NIGHT a second glance when she walks in to offer him the bag of rewards for his efforts. He takes it any way, after a while. [K9]: This sucks. NIGHT doesn't respond, but her continued presence informs him to speak further on the issue. [K9]: I'd told seiche to haul us to the nearest blacksmith, assuming fate's kind enough to funnel us there directly... I guess Marquis did have a point about the river being kinda strange about things like these, huh? He shakes his head with a sigh. [K9]: I hope it's fine if I leave the invasions to you four then. Or five. Depending on Weaver being in the mood or not. [NIGHT]: We can handle it. [K9]: ... Thanks.
