[PP-09] Guardian of Fire - Infernal Paw Patrol

The locals were struggling to understand Freyd's insistence.  He'd referenced the landscape of floor nine as 'scenic' which seemed outright loopy to the trio of vendors with whom he was conversing.  'Vulcan Town', they had already agreed, was in serious need of re-branding.  

"Look," he continued.  "I'm used to the foggy miasma of floor thirteen where everything is about half a minute from either going moldy or liquefying - including the mobs.  This place is practically a paradise by comparison, and the mountainous vistas are actually quite appealing."  The NPCs wandered away muttering something about him having rot on the the brain.  Freyd just shrugged as they wandered off.  He'd already secured some logistical support for Firm Anima and expanded his list of contacts.  This was his first time on this level and he needed to keep adding to his network.  

The town's quest board was in shambles, consisting of little more than a basalt slab propped up against a large obsidian-laced rock.  The contents were written in chalk.  The Inferno Caverns sounded like a good resource-spawning ground and had a flaming canine infestation that needed resolving.  Naturally, after having recently set the poor man on fire, he immediately thought of Kiluia.

Freyd really had to really sell  this quest over to Kiluia. He wasn’t upset about the fire and catching fire for a bit. No, he just didn’t like heat in general. No matter, the quest was easy enough on the eyes and it wouldn’t take long. He sent a message to him and looked the time on the HUD. It was time to get going and meet him there.

He stretched slightly and poked his penguin to life. Pingu shot up and squawked at him. She didn’t want to leave her little bed but was forced when he was out the door. Body moved fluidly out the door and he left a note for Haine. “Be back for dinner love. Off to do something.” He simply placed it on the table prior to leaving.

The floor was hot. This wasn’t desert hot. This was extreme heat produced by lava. “Hell…”He frowned slightly walking to the center of the town that he had arrived in. Pingu was just as upset as her master. “I’ll buy you some snow cones.”

[Assassin 0]

First time on floor nine and Assassin was dying from the moment that she stepped foot on it. The ground was black an charred and the heat made it difficult to breathe, especially in her armor. What sort of awful person made a landscape like this and thought that people would enjoy it.

She was about to turn back and go to the better floors with forests and sunshine when she noticed a familiar looking face. It was the man from the lessons quest that she had done forever ago. It felt weird seeing someone like him all over again, especially since the last time that he saw her, she was acting like an annoyed little brat.

Nevertheless, she found herself curious and watched him from a distance. If he was going on a quest, she could likely jump in and get credit for it as well with little effort on her part. Sticking to the shadows, she tries to make herself unseen to Freyd and his ally.

Freyd busied himself juggling a trio of smooth black stones - badly.  He really wasn't any good at this sort of thing, but he had to kill more time before Kiluia arrived, and this was what he had available.  A small, dark form with bright blue eyes perked up from behind his should as he struggled with the his coordination, his cowl falling back from his head as he tried to keep an eye on each of the stones.  It watched him intently, trying to figure out the point of his actions.

Suddenly, it leapt forward, snatching one of the rocks from the air and tumbling to the ground with it in its maw.  

"Erm... that's not how this one one works, Persi.  I need to be the one to catch them."  Clearly, she preferred some kind of vertical game of fetch to whatever it was he proposed.  He extended a gloved hand and she returned the taken token, albeit reluctantly.

“I don’t know exactly how you convinced me to come to this floor but damn.” He looked at Freyd and Persi. Hand would open up his Hud and pull a bottle of water out. He glanced at Freyd.” Are we waiting for anyone else? I don’t have the survival skill by the way. But it shouldn’t be too bad.” He took a swig and handed another bottle over to Freyd. Eyes looked over at his penguin now and he gave her another bottle for herself to drink. While she only had wings, she was able to carry certain things relatively well.

He gazed upon their surroundings and though about how ridiculous this was in terms of a floor dedicated to lava. Who thought up of this torturous crap? His mind wondered slightly before patting the penguins head. She was whining at the heat but with the water it made it bearable for her to withstand. At least for now.

A new person was on the field. She hadn't met this guy before. He looked interesting, and kind of strong. There wasn't very many people that she was scared of though. Hidden was probably the scariest person that she had met, and that was only when they first met.

It was at this time that Hyou had caught up with her. The big fat fluffy familiar was much easier to see than she was in the shadows, so this was probably the worst time for her to show up all of a sudden. The lovable fluff ball brushed up against her master and purred. "Hyou, shhh! I'm trying to be sneaky!" She whispered to her familiar a little louder than she meant to be.

When she turned back, she could see the two men looking at her, most likely. A nervous smile graced her lips as she waved at them. "Ah, h-hey there..."

His eyes boggling at the sudden appearance of the small figure, Freyd squinted as he tried to jog his memory.  Wait a sec...

"Sin-Chan!?  Is that you?"  He turned to look at Kiluia, who had an even more confused look on his face, but the man was so laid back that he wasn't likely to react with anything negative.  

"Wow, it's been some time.  You look no worse for wear, which is certainly nice to see."  Freyd and Assassin hadn't encountered each other since they completed the second through fourth lessons together.  It felt like a lifetime ago now.  She clearly had a familiar, though he struggled to tell exactly what it was.    I wonder if her aim has improved any?  Better not ask, just in case.  She always was the temperamental sort.

"Not much reason to be up this way.  Were you planning to travel to the Infernal Caverns?  Kiluia and I..."  It only just occurred to him that he'd been chattering away without proper introductions.  "Oh...er.. right.  Kiluia meet Sin-Chan, an old friend.  Sin-Chan, this is Kiluia, a...newer friend?"  Gods, he was bad at these sorts of things.

Newer friend? Older Friend? Friends just in general really. She wasn’t there one second an then she was there the next second. Hearing Freyd call her chan just made it a bit stranger for him. He hadn’t realized Freyd was close to someone. “Nice to meet you, Sin.” He extended his right hand out to her. “My name is Kiluia. Friend and guild mate of Freyd here.”

After the handshake, it was seen that he was sweating slightly. The heat was bothering him already and they were in a safe zone. He wondered what it would be like out of the safe zone. He would have to suffer to finish this quest but it was still experience to level up. He needed all the experience to catch up. “So, why this quest and do you enjoy making me burn?” His eyes narrowed at Freyd but with a smile. His eyes looked back at Sin as well exchanging glances back and forth

Assassin looked nervous for a moment as Freyd approached her. The snow-leopard cub jumped in front of her as he made his attention to the girl known. It growled angrily, not knowing who this person was and what they wanted. Assassin took a moment to pet the back of Hyou's head.

"Shhh, he's fine." The familiar still looked skeptical, but backed down. Assassin shook Kiluia's hand, which was weird, she was used to bowing to others as a greeting. "You guys are going on a quest? I don't like the feeling of this floor a whole lot, its way too hot. But, I'll join you if you guys want, I got a special new weapon from a friend."

The child pulled her weapon from her belt underneath her cloak and showed it off. The weapon looked nearly demonic, oozing with an awful aura of malice and despair. Touching it seemed dangerous in and of itself.

Despite her sneaky approach and demonic-looking weapon, Freyd immediately offered her a party invitation. 

"She's cool,"  was all he offered.  As if that somehow explained explained everything, he turned and mapped out his intended route to the Inferno Cavern.  Nothing more had to be said.  

It would take two days to get there, and the journey was arduous at best.  He'd survived extended hardship on floor five, and knew well the perils they would face.  Kiluia and Assassin might not fare so well, or at least far less comfortably.  Their path followed a series of narrow ridges through volcanic badlands, skirting lava flows, climbing razor-sharp obsidian rock faces.  Every aspect of this environment was designed to be lethal, even the air.  The closer they traveled to the Inferno Cavern, the thicker the skies became choked with falling ash and noxious fumes, forcing them to cover their faces and limiting their vision. A single misstep could mean a fall to your death.  

"Nice vacation spot," was Freyd's only comment, if anyone complained.

[Kiluia Seiko 0]

The sword screamed to Kiluia to touch it but of course he did no such thing. He wanted to though. Following Freyd’s lead, he followed him into the burning landscape. The boots provided no protection and he suffered damage through it. He knew very well there was a skill that was needed to get to prevent said damage, but he was in the middle of this quest since he was greedy for experience. He looked at Freyd and shook his head. “Of course. I want to be a turkey and roast.” He commented as he looked at incoming Hellhounds.

He took immediate action and took off on the burning ground. Good thing he was moving quickly now. Seeing the three hell hounds emerge, he lunged at the first hound and grabbed its snout. With an iron grip, he picked it up and slammed it on top of the other hell hound. He took a quickly provided an uppercut into the bottom hellhound which smashed both of their heads together. The last two hell hounds were quickly dispatched with a quick jabs to the snout causing it to hemorrhage and shatter into crystals.

Assassin was ready to fight something with her newly found dagger. She spent a long time getting this dagger to listen to her, but she had conquered it. A insanely demonic and malevolent pressure formed around the child as she readied her attack. As the next hell hound jump ahead of it's pack, the young girl dashed past the two men at a speed that was nearly untraceable.

Her dagger slashed through the hound ahead of the pack. It stalled for a moment, billowing with a malevolent energy that made it's body convulse until it exploded into a purple pulp of data. As the next group of four decended upon her, her cloak waved through the air and she became nothing but a blur of black moving out of the way of their fiery fangs. The air of the heated cavern hardly seemed to bother her as she fought, taking no damage like Kiluia had.

Admiring the combat prowess of his companions, Freyd saw another pack of the fiery hounds bound around a nearby outcrop of obsidian, the black glass reflecting their flaming forms beautifully in its distorted surface.  Summoning Forgiven Disobedience to hand, he leapt into the air and performed a full three hundred and sixty degree spin.  The white blade lanced out with light imbued by the power of his sword art, driving a line of holy light along the ground that looked like it would miss the mobs.  It struck the obsidian formation instead, detonating it into an explosive field of deadly black shrapnel that eviscerated all four mobs from behind.

There was little time to celebrate as a trio of bark-like roars echoed off the surrounding rock faces.  It seemed that their quarry had found them instead.  Scampering up the gravel-covered ridge to their left, Freyd positioned himself for his next attack.  They only needed to draw it out into the open.

He hadn’t seen the direction of where Freyd had manage to go off in. The destruction of the hell hounds was fresh in his mind as he gazed upon the surroundings within the smoldering cave. This was right out of the movie Descent added with piles of molten rock. Speaking of, he wasn’t paying attention and stepped into a hotter spot and ended up suffering burns. Damn. That was followed by a low growl that echoed the area. That was odd. He heard it but it didn’t seem anywhere he could see. Eyes darted back and forth but only to find it that the giant Cerberus had approached behind him. “Whoa.” He had leapt away out of instinct from the dog. It was quieter than he had expected, and it was reaction to move.

“Sorry wasn’t paying attention!” He shot a glance at Freyd. He’d have to do more damage to it since he was further away from the hound.

When Kiluia turned to the giant three headed dog, he was graced with the beautiful sight of a four and a half foot tall child riding on one of the necks of the beast, spewing dark corporeal energy from her body. She was laughing maniacally, riding the beast like a pony trying to buck her off.

"Wooo!! Hahaha!" Her dagger sang as it entered the flesh of the cerberus, making the head she was resting on limp and fall. The other two heads cried in agony from the pain she inflicted. She fell from the beast and rolled on the obsidian floor. The heat hardly seemed to bother her as she landed and rolled. Her speed still unmatched by anyone, she burst away from the Cerberus when it reached in to eat her.

Soon she appeared behind the two men and pointed at the cerberus with a smile on her face, that demonic aura still enveloping her form. "Get the meanie guys! He tried to eat me!"

Freyd leaped from his high vantage, noticing at the last minute that two heads were still active instead of the one he had anticipated.  Trying to adjust his overhead swing in mid-air proved too difficult and he missed the first target, but the holy blade severed his intended head from the giant beast's body with a flare of bright white light and a brief choral echo of angel song.  

The dog - for that is what Cerberus resembled without his flanking maws - tried to bite at Assassin, but the small girl was simply too nimble and darted out of sight with a blur of speed.  Belching out a spray of flame and blood bought the monster a momentary reprieve, but it was clear that this fight was completely one-sided.  It was only a question of which assailant would claim the kill.  Defiant to the end, the field boss howled to bolster its own courage in the face of imminent demise.

He readjusted his positioning after being caught off guard from the first entrance of the hellhound. A slight smile crossed his face as he watched the rest of the group strike down their designated heads. It seemed he was going to take the final shot on this creature. That was always a plus. He lowered his body in a running position causing light burns on to his hands and feet. He took a deep breath and then took off sprinting like a bullet at Cerberus. Legs pumped as he as he could before the initial jump. His right leg propelled his body at the three headed hound clearing most of the way in that one leap. His left knee rose to strike square into the chin of the hell hound before his right elbow came crashing down on the bridge of the larger hound. (All Might – 14 EN)

With the next moment, the hell hound disappeared into nothingness with the crystals trailing and floating away. “Well that was fun.”

The battle came to an end with a triumphant explosion of data particles. Assassin twirled the demonic dagger in her hand and returned it to the holster of her belt that hid under her cloak. It made a shriek grinding noise as she did so and the essence of darkness that had overtaken her slowly faded away within a few moments.

"He hardly lasted against us. It could have been more fun." She pouted a little, realizing that the combat was actually finished and she wouldn't get to beat up anymore meanies. She hadn't planned on doing this today, but it was a nice break from the current work that she has been doing, what with her familiar nearly going insane and her having to debate actually murdering her pet.

"Well, I guess it's not their fault that we're all too strong. No meanies can beat us up." She said with a smug attitude, starting to make her way out of the cavern.

"There's always a bigger meanie," Freyd replied, looking up at the soot-covered sky above them, a dull red glow reflecting on the blackened roof that concealed the remaining floors of Aincrad.  There most certainly were, up there.

"At least this one's down for a while.  It will give the locals a temporary reprieve and give us time to complete other business.  Thank you both for your help getting this done."  He noticed the burns on both of their bodies and suggested that it might be best to get out of here as quickly as possible.  The journey back was equally long.  Freyd was never the chatty type to begin with, and so spent most of their travels in silence, taking in the landscape.  As harsh and hostile as it was, he saw beauty in it.  He'd given this floor serious consideration as his home, but various rules and dictates had prevented it.  It might make a decent vacation spot, in the future.

Freyd had mentioned this to be a vacation spot and he simply shook his head. He preferred colder climates and not ones that burned the soles of his shoes. He started walking faster to get his ass gone from this place. “Remind me to book a vacation to a place less hot and terrorizing to my health.” He looked over at the two as they spoke. They were stronger and it was evident by how fast they were dispatching these creatures. “I don’t want to fight big baddies just yet til I have a few more levels under my belt. We will eventually find more challenging things.”

He flipped down his HUD and started friend requesting Assassin. He sent the request and then looked back at the two. “Its time to go go go.” He was in a hurry to leave due to the fact he hated heat like no ones business.
