Nisahime 0 Posted August 31, 2020 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2020 Exiting the building that Zackariah was housed, his parcel to deliver in her grasp. A calm sway with it held loosely in her hands, unwavering and patient where most would draw irritation. To most these fetch quests would seed a sense of being made an errand boy. But not she, for Morrighan was beside such troubling feelings that would cause her pause. The woman had not looked back to see if Freyd was following for her path was clear now, getting to the blacksmith without any hitch. She'd seem lost for a moment in a trance, watching the metal be worked before she spoke. "Smith..." She'd speak loud through his hammer blow, before tossing a parcel to the top of his anvil. It bounces loosely upon its top causing the NPC to stop. "Zackariah has sent me, if this is the end of my journey then I'll take my leave." Freyd 0 Posted September 1, 2020 #2 Share Posted September 1, 2020 For his part, Freyd hung back and watched as she navigated the unfamiliar streets, looking for clues about her origins through mannerisms and reactions to stimuli. The woman was a blank slate, as much to herself as to others. There were no tells, no slips and no evidence whatsoever that she was anything but the empty vessel that she claimed to be. Could she have been reset, whether by accident or deliberate intervention? Wouldn't that be an interesting development, especially if the reset was caused by her death? Questions of such existential nature had plagued him repeatedly of late. What truly aggravated him was that he couldn't verify his myriad theories. Well, that wasn't entirely true. He could, but the deed would require expenditure of a precariously finite nature, and people didn't tend to react well when you killed others for such experiments. It was a pity that morality so compromised efficiency. Despite SAO being referred to as a 'death game', and the number of names that had appeared on the Monument of Life, he had never actually seen another player die. Too bad, as it might help answer some crucial questions. The math just didn't validate taking those steps himself. Not yet, at least. It unfolds in his grasp like a lily, revealing a draught. The very same that she'd produced. "A potion, right you fixin' to offer me the same?" the smith would ask of her, she'd tilt as she was already making her leave. "Curious, I suppose I can offer you the same. A bond written, what my reward maybe remains to be seen." her comment as she stops. The NPC would go on "Reward would be a piece of weaponry forged by me, find me some boar pup tusks from hatchlings in the field. Freyd 0 Posted September 1, 2020 #4 Share Posted September 1, 2020 Freyd offered Lyle a small nod as he pivoted to follow Morrighan, or Nisahime, or Nessa - whatever name they were going with now - back out towards the gate. The boar tusk quest brought back memories of his feud with Bacon Bits, and other mud-covered escapades from his not-so-distant past. Thinking that it might be enjoyable to watch her flounder, as so many newbies often do against early level mobs, he followed two steps behind. 'I am as her shadow,' he thought. 'How appropriate.' But he didn't actually expect her to fail, did he? He blinked as he recognized the truth of it, Freyd's mind processing that something was askew. "Morrighan," he started, "Do you have a weapon?" It was far too soon for her to have already mastered the Boulder, and she'd made no mention of it in his previous queries. Nothing was apparent on her, and what little clothing she word made it extremely unlikely that she was hiding it. He supposed that she could keep it in her storage, as he often did with his own blade. What was she thinking?
Nisahime 0 Posted September 1, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) She'd parade out into the zone at which these beasts held sanctum, looking at them with a simple snort being their only response. She'd whistle sharply, causing them to stir. "No I have no weapon, and I shall not need it. This will be handled the same as my own reflection, and I will lift not a finger." They'd galavant about, looking at her agitated by the noise. Lifting her hands slightly at her side, as if raising from a pool of water she'd goad them. "I stand here upon this stage foul tyrant, would you not wish to spill my blood for my indiscretion?" she spoke with some bass in her voice, but it was no shout but simply a spoken word. They stampede toward her and as a result like a flashbang, a blinding flash as they seem to bounce off of some sort of barrier. A trickle of damage seems to bleed through for the manifested wall was less than perfect, but one impacts solid and with the light, it seems to disappear. Freyd 0 Posted September 1, 2020 #6 Share Posted September 1, 2020 She had more then enough hit points, by now, even after only a few quests. Who was he to care if she chose to get herself gutted by bore tusks over the course of her duties. If she....wait... ahahaha.... clever girl. She defeated her Gemini in the same way, she said. Freyd had used the same trick. His had been provided by the timely pick up of an immolation potion. No flames or flickering were visible, but she was wearing atypical clothing as starting gear. His keen merchant's eye scrutinized the unusual and exceedingly scant material barely covering her form, oblivious to its more sensual qualities. It must have some kind of thorns effect, or something. "You're either wiser than you let on, Morrighan, or a very bad tailor gave you some very good advice." Leaning back, Freyd removed himself from the combat equation. These things would explode if he looked at them the wrong way, and she had to collect the loot herself as part of the quest. "Simply use what was given, and keep not what is not necessary. I happened upon this garb by what some would call coincidence. But I am not that foolish, to forsake a blessing." looking to him with a smile, before a twist of an open hand casts the barrier in front of her with the charge of the beasts again, bolstering it with strength as the swell caused her hair to take flight, Iris ablaze with the system given energies. The first is cleaved in two, like a shard of glass it closes up leaving half inside and the butt on the floor before it bursts. The remaining few scatter upon its surface finding no purchase. Freyd 0 Posted September 2, 2020 #8 Share Posted September 2, 2020 He could only stand by and watch as the scene unfolded. It was also all he needed to do. She had this. Unfortunately for the boars, they were never going to figure that out, and kept throwing themselves at her like lemmings off a cliff. Freyd vaguely recalled the whole lemming thing having been exposed as a fraud - humans basically shoving them off that cliff from off-camera. Whatever. The point held: they were doomed. Finding himself a comfortable stone to sit upon, Freyd occupied himself by reviewing messages and reports from various field operatives. Things continued to unfold at a dizzying pace on the upper floors. It seemed off for him to be sitting idly at the same time, but this was currently the best potential use of his time. He needed agents beyond the bounds of Firm Anima. They had to be capable of operating independently, and alone if necessary. This.. Morrighan... could be such an asset, if he could figure her out. Another boar down, he noted. Good.
Nisahime 0 Posted September 2, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted September 2, 2020 (edited) Scattering off of her barrier again with one blinding flash of light while the others simply glanced and were redirected, it is shattered as if made of glass. Left in its wake, the final piece of the puzzle. She'd lean and pick it via her thumb and two fingers. Spinning it upright with a twist of her wrist. "Your purpose served, such a pity that despite being stationary still such trouble." she'd comment and begin to walk back for the city, the boars still filled with ire and anger but she had what she desired and was simply keen on discarding their intentions for what they were: unimportant. Morrighan looks to Freyd for but a moment, having perched himself in some semblance of comfort. "Not a finger..." she'd comment as another attempted at her back, ricocheting and falling on its side and sliding a fair distance. Freyd 0 Posted September 5, 2020 #10 Share Posted September 5, 2020 "An effective tactic at this level, but not one that can necessarily be applied to all cases." Wisps of darkness rose from the ground forming a long, sinuous line in his hands. There was a flash of black, then his hands were bare again. The three remaining boars had been instantaneously turned into desiccated husks behind them. They burst simultaneously into crystallized shards like shattering obsidian, vanishing before the fragments even reached the ground. "You will find it effective, for now, but circumstances will eventually mandate the necessity and availability of other tools. The most powerful foes require coordination by groups with varying sets of specializations, properly balanced and arrayed in complimentary manner to effectively defeat the threat." Was she just being clever, or deliberately dense and carried by good fortune? Maybe her Gemini was actually helping her? The very concept seemed anathema to Freyd, who'd had to struggle with his own to the extent of mortal peril. "A defending build, sometimes called a 'tank', might suit you well." He skipped the topic of hate generation, for the moment, genuinely wondering if she'd somehow manage to achieve it with aloof obstinacy. Nisahime 0 Posted October 26, 2021 Author #11 Share Posted October 26, 2021 A somber and brisk walk, utterly unconcerned by the notion that whatever methods she had been doing would cease to function. It was almost alien, her lack of concern. There was a strange contrast between the two, where Freyd almost seemed consumed by the dark, the faint film of white light fades from the woman's shoulders. A strange enhancement, if one could call it that. "A build, effectiveness? My messenger do not mistake me for some soldier. I go wherever the fates wish me to go, such simplicity in it. I need not a direction, for it will be given unto me. Your concern is noted, if that is what it may be. But I have no interest in such affairs, and only wish to see where this road leads." Where some were guided by reasoning or desire, the woman wasn't. Just some nagging need to wander, to judge with her own two eyes. Plain and yet dignified, simple and yet complex. The soft clatter of her heels as they worked to break apart an awaiting idle dirt road, a single divide back to a city on the horizon. She'd not dawdle on such trifles, the need to be elsewhere still burning through her breast.
Freyd 0 Posted October 26, 2021 #12 Share Posted October 26, 2021 "Sure," he replied, "Whatever you say, Joan." A scene played through of his head, from an old movie titled 'The Messenger'. It was a rendition of the tale of Joan of Arc. Nessa fit the bill, almost too perfectly. She seemed oblivious to her reality, yet tied to some grander fate. Freyd was beginning to doubt whether she was a player at all and perhaps just some mischievous quirk of Cardinal let loose to confuse the absolute shit out of everybody. Her tactics were actually brilliant, but drastically unconventional, to the extent that he struggled to imagine anyone employing them. There was a depth of awareness to her that belied her apparent obliviousness. Whatever the case, this woman was no fool. He needed more data. "So, where does fate draw you, after this? Hmm?" He wondered whether she even knew. Maybe some subroutine was guiding her along a pre-determined path. Maybe she was just winging it and wanted to make it sound cool. Both carried interesting connotations. He had to know, and so became suspicious that he was just being played. Cardinal had done worse, and been more insipid in the past. Red eyes narrowed beneath the cowl.
Nisahime 0 Posted October 26, 2021 Author #13 Share Posted October 26, 2021 "What an interesting play, my sir, you wound me." She ushers past as if that were meant as some joke, but the reflection on her face could easily leave anyone to take her seriously. A listful sway without any sense of urgency, as if going with some flow or tune that only she could hear. A multitude of screams and shouts, players a plenty grinding away to devices and desires that they wished to fulfill. A slightly waning sun hung on the horizon, burning bright over the large tanned stone that ringed the town of beginnings. A glance over her right shoulder, finding wherever Freyd's eyes would be. "A question worth answering, isn't it." On her face, a smile, and yet almost devoid of meaning. As if she was on to something that no one else was, coy. "I don't rightly know, it becomes obvious once I see it and not a moment sooner. Curious?" A sudden flare of white in her iris, as a voice rings in her eardrums. Don't toy with him, he's offered his assistance for long enough to be above such fiddling.
Freyd 0 Posted October 26, 2021 #14 Share Posted October 26, 2021 "I am the colour of doubt." The statement came, unbidden, from no fathomable source. Freyd just blurted it out like it was supposed to be self-evident. His voice was flat and cold, as he spoke. It carried no malice or frustration, yet felt as if imbued by an overwhelming undercurrent of truth. Hands stuffed firmly into pockets, he wandered several steps behind her, committed by his choice yet wondering how long his interest would endure. For now, mere observation would suffice. He had to admit that it might also be his only option. This woman would not reveal her secrets lightly, or quickly. "See if your gut tells you to go that way. There's a fisher named Pete by the lake who offers the next quest in the chain. He'd be the next and most efficient choice for you, at this point." He suggestion was sincere, yet prodding. Evidence would not present itself from this one without stimulus, properly paced to her speed. It was as good a place to start as any.
Nisahime 0 Posted October 26, 2021 Author #15 Share Posted October 26, 2021 That same coy expression, unfazed by the notion, without even an attempt at concealing it. "What a simple shade to become, doubt leaves one's mind closed." she eyes Pete, still working to patch up some fishing pole that had been damaged. "Perchance, it will be. But I care naught of any chains, any given affairs. If I seek it, it will be of my own volition and not the decree of some falsehood or figment. I see no value in gains given." A handful of boar tusks still ripe in her palm, she ushers into the thoroughfare to the sound of a beating hammer. Casting the bones from the slain upon the top of that heavy iron, Zachariah stops. "Well done, what type of weapon would you like forged?" The woman simply starts to trail away. "None, your charity does not concern me. Best of luck in your work." With it a simple stroll away. To only the most perceptive, within that small moment after the quest completes, her hair shifts from white to black for just a brief instant.
Freyd 0 Posted October 26, 2021 #16 Share Posted October 26, 2021 "Doubt is the doorway to understand: recognition of that limits can be breached and the unknown beyond explored." Freyd's expression was flat. He was falling into his machine self, cunning and clinical all at once - ruthlessly practical in all things. Watching her refusal accept Zackariah's reward, a notion came to him. "You choose not to choose on the grounds that it will bias the outcome of fate's design, but that act is a choice in and of itself." A flaw, unexpectedly exposed. A contradiction that could only be excused as an act of blind faith - something the Whisper could never accept as rational, because it wasn't. It was beyond his understanding. She was a paradox, yet intelligent and self-aware enough to realize it. A flash of self? A glimpse of her other self at play? She can lie, Freyd concluded, even to herself. Part assumption and deduction that fit the few available facts. He was satisfied with that, for now.
Nisahime 0 Posted October 27, 2021 Author #17 Share Posted October 27, 2021 A deflated expression and a notion that was disconnected, here were the simplest contrasts. A white haired maiden, almost glowing in the light of a day about to shift to night and a man stained pure black for what was coming. "What limits, pardon the ones that you set upon yourself? You are correct, messenger. My choice is to wait and see, to allow my own two hands and two eyes find it, be it as it may. Not thrust upon me, not bestowed upon me. I choose to allow no limits, and the unknown to become known, without settling for what 'is'. Else you do thy self a disservice, for in that acceptance you fail to reach a fleeting potential that can far exceed such a trap." A slide through the open slots in buildings, a parcel being crammed into her inventory, given she refused to wait for it to be included. A solid stare into the crowds, at which she so blatantly stood out from. "Rushing off to doors, to buildings. To desire so desperately clung to. A self-worth that isn't at all necessary, a hope that it will change their fate. But it won't" Morrighan looks at Freyd with a distinguishable flare in her eyes painting them silver, a skill being used but yet not one she was aware of. "No sword will strengthen a heart, no shield will provide courage, and no armor will give one vigor to stand. It is an intangible thing, that you either own or do not. See? What isn't most certainly is? Who among them bear it?"
Freyd 0 Posted October 27, 2021 #18 Share Posted October 27, 2021 "Meh." Freyd's blunt and callous blurt dismissed her argument. "I know strength of will like few others, but it won't protect my face from a solid smashing or slay my enemy with bare hands and glares alone. Tools are the means to exceed our limitations. To dismiss them is to consign yourself yourself to lesser potential. What you describe are traits and talents, innate in nature. They are the intangibles that drive the tools, but they are finite and constrained." He shook his head in response to her assertions. "In battle, the man with the sword carries hope of victory. The man with the shield knows that he is protected. The one wearing armor can count upon it to grant him endurance he would lack without it. Neither of these conditions are absolute. Every being lies somewhere on the spectrum between the extremes of every option - some of closer to a given pole." It was clear that he believed he and Nisa to be such individuals. "Choosing to let fate happen around you, or consign yourself to the whims of the wind, does not make you wise. You are simply choosing to let other factors choose for you. It grants you no insight or immunity, just the illusion of absolution from responsibility of action. You are letting things happen around you and pretending that willing disconnection somehow detaches you from it. It is a lie." He advanced to walk beside her, no longer willing or able to follow. Their viewpoints were contrary, though not incompatible. The simple truth was that he didn't care what she chose, or didn't choose. She was her and he was him, and that was all that mattered. Though, the thought did cross his mind to stab her, just to make a point. Nah, he decided. Not worth it.
Nisahime 0 Posted October 27, 2021 Author #19 Share Posted October 27, 2021 "And that is where, dear mockingbird, we agree. But I have yet the tool of my design. Talent lies in those that are willing to ride the bleeding edge. I sense the same from you, and yet I know not if it has been seen. If left bare, alone and caged. Most would die like dogs, but you." That same coy and playful grin, although she found no humor in it, but a production to mirror emotion. "Would escape such a prison tooth and nail, blood and teeth without naught but the clothes upon your back. Kill with whatever tool you were given, and succeed." Her image distorts, and twists between two, and one could almost swear there was two of her. "I am fate, and do not follow it. Once the pieces become what they once were, then I will understand what it is I must do. Until then, such searching will continue. The only whims at which I follow are mine, not to be taken as flights of fancy. That is my truth." Nisa's footfalls stop dead, and within that instant she seemed almost confused. Lost in whatever it was that had just transpired. Sorrow spurns in a cavern of iron, beneath a city of sprouts, and beckons to its mother.
Freyd 0 Posted October 27, 2021 #20 Share Posted October 27, 2021 That one definitely caught his attention. It even raised an eyebrow, all on its own. The iris below dwelled upon the crystal still spinning over her her head, less convinced than ever that it was genuine. Suspicion found fertile ground upon which to plant itself and blossom at a later date. Something was definitely off here, but he lacked the dots to be connected, at least for now. She dismissed those who would dare attempt to define her, yet spoke to him strangely as an equal, but on a level so above his pay scale that he couldn't quite fathom. Fate? Was this woman a self-professed force of nature? That took some balls, but so did wandering out into a field and waiting for boars to crash into your first level ass. Even if she was just a total headcase, she pulled it off convincingly. That alone had been enough to garner his respect. It takes real effort to pull off that level of crazy. And now, this. "Hrm," he offered, pondering at myriad possibilities. "Interesting." Neither one of them paid any heed to the odd, bony figure in the corner, carefully watching their exchange, until it yelped in surprise as a shadowy mongoose pounced and started gnawing on its femur. *** Thread Summary: 3829 words / 30 = 127*5= 638*Tier 3829 / 300 = 12 seeds Nisahime receives: Spoiler 1391 EXP (Word Count [638*1] + 475 [Quest] + 25% from event) 1170 col (400 [1 page] + 500 [quest] + 30% from event) 15 mats (10 [tag] + 50% from event) Nisa ignores quest item reward and abandons it. 12 Seeds (Event) 1 tag (10 materials, +5% EXP to the party) ID: 199407 (CD 8); 199408 (CD 11); 199409 (CD 6) Freyd receives: Spoiler 4785 EXP (Word Count [638*6] + 25% from event) 15 mats (10 [tag] + 50% from event) 12 Seeds (Event) 2 tag (10 materials, +5% EXP to the party) ID: 199410 (CD 12); 199411 (CD 5); 199412 (CD 12) Perfect Unidentified Equipment/Item (x3) of the player’s choice equal to their tier.
