[SP|F22] Searching for Something

A dash at the enemies and with a whistle, he shook his left hand. He hit them good and he hit them damn hard. Before they could get a single hit in on him, he dashed over back to where he started, having landed a quick slash on every single one of them. This was all that he had to do, really. Now they all fell one by one like flies, shattering into shards. "I think I really am getting much better at this. Hell, at this rate, we might even find the sword before we know it."

What he did think would be really funny would be seeing the sword fully identified the moment that he picked it up- if only. He had to waste the hard earned Col he got out of this just to identify a stupid weapon though, which would probably have no checks from Chase's desired enchantments list. Whatever, that meant he could just sell it and get some of his money back, if not keep it for those he knew would need a sword like that.

There was one thing keeping him mighty happy though, and that's the constant flow of perfect weapons or armors. Sure, his overcoat was great and his weapon wasn't shabby any. He could always opt for the Warrior's Blade, but the Godfeller as he assumed it'd be named, would just knock everything else right out of the park. As for his Azure Overcoat, it did him a lot but it was still stuck in the second tier. Maybe if he could find something with the same attributes and a little more unique to it, he would be able to replace this invaluable item to his build.

He almost began to wonder how he'd be without his overcoat before with another step, four tendrils appeared out of the ground. One whipped at him right before he could do jack squat, damaging him a fair bit and annoying him that much more. "Cut the shit.", he growled and slashed at all four of them, dealing some heavy amounts of damage.

Some form of creatures seemed to have invaded this forest and nested as deep in as possible. Either monsters that came with the recent event of the Vanguard, Skalaugh and whatever the other boss was attacking his home floor was, or some things that obviously hated the light. If anything, he could swear that the light of his sword arts miffed them more than anything. He quickly went in for another blow, finishing three off and only leaving one behind.

He brushed his hair back, watching it weakly try to assault him and fail. It whipped at the ground next to him, getting a sigh and nothing less out of him. "Honestly, this is beginning to get way too tiring... Is there nothing more to this quest or whatever I've found other than killing anything I see that's out of place to calm the forest down..? What even are these things?"

Made a typo again in the roller. Wanted to roll for 3 and did for 2, keeping the roll so it's not cheating.

It didn't even take a powerful slash to finish the monster off. He slashed sideways and cut it in half, getting it to shatter and yawning as he holstered his blade once more. Now was his occasional energy break, letting him rest off for a minute or so and try to understand where the root of the problem lied. Maybe they were some form of a disease spreading left and right, a 'corruption' of sorts like the many that existed in games- games that Chase knew nothing about, names included.

"... Honestly, whatever the hell is up with this place is lame. I wouldn't mind it if they all came to me at once and didn't make me just go on further and further, kill them, rest, rinse and repeat until they decide to stop appearing and leave me alone...". He wasn't really wrong, then again, that's what the entirety of grind threads trips consisted of.

With a quick look to the ground, even in the dense and rather black fog, he managed to find a material. He picked it up and let out a low whistle once more, stashing it in his inventory and continuing down his merry path now that his energy began to get restored bit by bit. "Damn, I got a whole lot of nothing I can see.", he commented cynically as ever and chuckled to himself, just thinking about how much he would have preferred to be with someone.

While he was certain his strength covered any time restraints and made sure to get everything done fast and consistently, it bothered him how much silence there was. He never was the talkative type admittedly, but it was about time somebody threw in a snarky comment or made him feel on edge with an awkward question, chattered or tried to break the stiffness.

His half-assed attempts just wouldn't do. Another material on the ground meant that he was probably getting close to somewhere important, so he picked it up and continued down his path. His energy was back to full and he was ready for yet another encounter with whatever laid further ahead. "... Stuff might get hard, anytime now. I doubt it but you never know when the going gets rough.", he warned Blizz and composed himself once more to be ready to slash anything in his path down.

It wasn't that he didn't trust in himself, he was just curious when the monsters would get noticeably harder to kill. Funnily enough, their health values had already increased and he hadn't noticed a single thing with how his damage was barely just enough to wipe them out with two successful hits- not even accounting for any extra damage through his weapon's unique procs.

It took no more than a few steps further into the forest to see what appeared like the final enemies he would face on this trip here- maybe there would be another four or eight after them. There wasn't many left regardless. For now, it was down to goopy, black, shadowy messes that meshed in with the fog just great. They all ran right towards him, getting slashed at- the fourth one strayed away quickly, losing its chance to strike despite having a very good opening to go off of.

How relaxed he was though didn't do him good. The three quickly got a hit in, then another, and a last one. Three hits total, lowering his health to the lowest it's been when not fighting a boss in god knows how long. "They really are more dangerous, I should be careful from here on out. Getting serious too then.", he noted and stretched his neck, taking his more careful pose with his sword pointed right at them and his legs ready to throw him in their direction.

The moment he got the chance to and saw them standing still, he kicked strongly. They all prepared for counter attacks and one among the three he'd hit already was going to get a hell of a strike on him- right at the head, middle of his forehead. Then his attack landed, cutting all four effectively in half. The one unhurt from his previous counter attack didn't really falter, instead forming its body once again and failing to return the attack. The other three though quickly melted into the ground and left the loot windows behind.

It was somewhat sad on one hand, how they fell just like that. Then again, it was nothing that he was going to complain about. Less of whatever shadows this was meant less of him getting hurt. The fourth one lacked the edge the previous three had, and that was alright too. Less danger meant more room for error- and he was already limiting error to a minimum.

Successfully so, at least. With every single one of them out of the way, it wasn't hard to see what he had to do to the last one. His energy was still around half, so that meant he could just walk up to it, raise his sword in the air and bring it down to cut it in half. And that's exactly what he did. Just like the rest, it melted into nothingness and left behind some subpar loot- still usable by Chase though all the same. He didn't mind it any whatsoever. "There can't be much more than this to look for, really.", he told Blizz with a small smile, knowing that their little expedition through the gloomy woods would not only cure them of whatever they had but also come to a close. Even if he didn't get the weapon he needed, or any good weapon and armor to go back home with, he'd gained more combat experience. That could always come handy more than anything else could.

Of course, that's only if Cardinal would let his human error take over instead of random calculated errors. For example, there we were again, four more shadows having appeared before the boy to assault him almost mercilessly. He raised his blade and jumped in to attack them. Did they try to counterattack? You bet they did, and the same way they tried they absolutely failed horribly at it. But Chase missed too, despite having gotten a fairly wide slash- that was because the monster dodged by the skin of its teeth. "So much for getting proud and sticking your chest out over more combat experience right now, dumbass.", he commented in the back of his head and stayed uneasy about the monsters, preparing to hit them back with an even harder, more accurate and stronger attack this time. He knew what to look out for and how dangerous they had the potential to be.

This time, he hit one that he had missed the previous turn and then two more that he had already wounded. The two fell, while the other two stayed and decided to attack him. One succeeded again with a critical strike, the only ones that appeared to work against his evasive maneuvers, dealing a fair chunk. Just when he thought that he had almost fully healed the damage he took, back down to where he was at the start of the battle he went. 

It felt rather normal and even refreshing to be in the slightest risk of danger for once, honestly. With his defensive, self-healing properties, he barely ever got to low enough health for his adrenaline to get pumping. As per usual though, we can't do with another 'yet again'. And yet again, here we are. He knew that it might be for the best. Getting no rushes of that sort, that is.

Whenever he was influenced by adrenaline too much, it usually meant that he lost full control of himself. And losing full control was nothing to be proud about. When it happened with Freyd due to a bad mood and an adrenaline boost on top, he ended up going overkill on a monster and essentially dealing enough damage in a single blow to kill it three or four times over, putting aside the fact that he kept hitting where it was out of sheer rage.

For now, he was calm and with his break coming right up, he was going to stay that way. No adrenaline or anything else to get his blood pumping in the bad sort of way. "And down you two go.", he nodded off to himself before slashing at them, watching them crumble without getting a chance to attack him once more. Another loot window, another bunch of useful (and not) items to sell or identify.

Some of these were genuinely hot garbage, like the consumables, while others like armors and weapons were an absolute godsend. He'd looked through the list and all the possibilities for trinkets might seem appealing to most, but definitely not to him. They could barely hold anything of use, and that was even mostly for support characters if anything for pete's sake. Just when he had been glad with his last long trip to have gotten a few goodies here and there, something just had to fuck up his vibe.

Nothing would this time though. Another group of monsters is all he could probably take, given how he didn't want to take too long. He didn't want to waste any more time and even if he weren't certain about it, there was something inside of him telling him that it was here. The final monsters that were sending everything in such an uproar.

Whatever had sent everybody right on into a frenzy, he was about to take care of in the only way that Aincrad ever really worked well for most parties involved- combat. He stretched his neck, seeing his energy bar completely filled up. He loosened his muscles and jumped up on his feet a bit, preparing for the real match. Even if his health wasn't at full, that was fine. He could still punch or stab a hole the size of whatever he wanted in whoever he wanted with ease, too much ease honestly.

"Let's see just what you are, you nasty cretin.", he cockily commented to himself and began to walk in further, seeing the fog get too dark. He could barely view a thing and he knew that whatever was around him, it began to look like an arena again. This was just like back then with the mushroom people, all over again. They were prepared to fight Chase.

Shadows appeared out of the ground, taking the same black form, except more gooey. A slash at them, and it failed. They completely dodged it and went liquid, melting all over his blade essentially. All it took was him turning it to its flat side and trying again. This time, a perfect hit, four out of four. And then he noticed the sound of something streaming, before the ground under him shook. Tendrils came out, almost sharp as spikes despite the liquid form.

Any appendage of an opponent meant damage, so he quickly went on the run, circling them through the dense and murky forest's air, keeping an eye pinned on them while he skillfully performed acrobatics in between every attack, slipping under some, then right on top of others and ultimately getting in a good spot behind the group again. Now was time to put an end to it.

These were no fungal cores whatsoever, but they were just as tenacious and persistent if anything. He slashed at them and the two dodged, with only two going down. It's all it took for the haze to start dispersing. It didn't go away in full though, just about halved in density. For whatever reason, these were indeed the sources of this corruption, the infection that plagued this area- and he was spot on that killing them would stop it.

He didn't know the reason and didn't have to, all he knew was that he had some monsters to kill and these were them. "Come on, throw your tendrils at me again, weaklings.", he challenged them. This time though, the attacks were lazier, almost worn out if anything. They almost struck him, but he dodged it every single time- the tendril, the attack, the lazy attempt. "When not four of them are present, maybe they grow even weaker. It's all an uphill battle for them from here on out, heh."

An uphill battle indeed, that it would be. If it lasted any longer than the next leap over and slash down at them. He looked behind him to watch them splash into the ground, and like so, the fog began to disappear once more. He was glad, smiling and scratching the back of his head as monsters emerged from left and right around the forest. The same tuskhorns, deer and doe that he had been slaying on his way here, an achievement to not be so proud about.

Whatever the case, they didn't seem out of his head or anything. Some dipped their head in respect almost, others went off upon noticing it was a player and some warily kept an eye on him from a safe distance. What did Chase do in return? He dismissed the loot window and began to walk back, throwing both hands behind his head. "C'mon Blizz. We're done here."

Then it struck him. He hadn't done this in god knows how long- and to be with Blizz, it was a tradition. He couldn't just not do it and break it off like that, no way. He began to look around with the same childish excitement as back then, when he first successfully trained his companion. The treasure chest just wasn't there though. What was it that he found rustling about the grasses, bushes and trees? Acorns. And one specifically fell atop his head, hurting somewhat.

That was fine, getting hit by nature was alright. Next time they went out on a trip like this, however long that would be from now, they were bound to get some good loot inside of a chest. It was clear by now though that chests did little compared to what this amount of monster extermination put in. "Sorry bud. There's nothing around though, it seems."

Whatever, he wasn't angry about it whatsoever. If anything, it was less trouble in the form of trying to break into another box by slamming its lock with the back of his pommel. Now he could head back scot free, relax and take a day off lazing about his estate. It took him well up until now to realize how privileged he was in this world, or at least how much effort he'd put in. He managed to live lavishly enough to buy a fucking estate by killing things his size or smaller, god damn.

Speaking of lots of money and hard effort, it appeared he had just how much he would need to pay off NIGHT and buy some upgrades. He probably wouldn't be left with any change given the item identifications, but for now came his interest-free debt and new items, as well as some quick sales here and there. He'd get his financial situation sorted out soon, way too soon.

And just like that, it had all been warped up nicely, neatly, all well and merry. It took him a few minutes, around half an hour to get to the settlement. When he did, he quickly headed for the teleporter and yawned just at the idea of everything he'd done today. God, was it ever so tiring to think about. For all it matters, he knew too well that most others wouldn't even do this if they could- a fair few didn't dare exit the safezones to farm on their own, and others were just too bothered to do something like this.

Chase was about to turn into the latter- he had a good chunk of items to keep him going for a while, and enough grinding for a few weeks if anything. "Off to relaxation- say, Blizz, how does a trip to the hot springs sound around now? Gotta relax those muscles and get some splashes, don't we~?"
