Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #21 Share Posted September 28, 2020 "Now!" Persi leapt directly out of Freyd's cowl engulfing Uso-Tsuki's head. She had mauled Kumatetsu. Heck, she even taken down the Colossus, much to his and Raidou's amazement. This should have been the end of it, but no. Grabbing at the shadowy familiar, the brawny warrior ripped at her and ferocious threw her into a nearby collection of jagged rocks. An alien-sounding yelp could barely be heard over the rain and booming thunder. Freyd knew full well that Uso-Tsuki was hoping to goad him into an emotional response. This man clearly didn't know who or what he was actually dealing with. The warmaster grinned wide, thinking he had just poked a hole in his enemy's armor. Frey's red-brown eyes narrowed on his enemy as he reset his grip and stance. His cowl had long since become pasted to his head, its peak falling just between those eyes and trailing water down over his face. His jaw set firm as he fell fully under the control of the machine side of his mind. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #22 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Time to pull back the curtain. Pausing to let his mind focus on precision of motion and harmony of action, Freyd took a step back and assumed an improvised stance. Uso-Tsuki knew all of those that formally existed in the system. Freyd couldn't alter that, but he could conceal them behind his own initial random movements to throw him out of position. It was essentially an elaborate feint, but there was a chance it could work. Exploding into a burst of frenzied motion, Freyd spun Samael's Pride with such alacrity and control that Uso-Tsuki was overwhelmed. He couldn't match Freyd's action to any known parameters. It was a true, spontaneous kata. By the time he'd blended it into his Galaxy Destroyer sword art, his opponent was out of position and exposed. The blow landed true with a roar of pain and surprise emanating from his flabbergasted opponent. "H...h...how?" The warmaster clutched at the gaping orange-red gash in his side. Freyd just grinned a wicked smile in response. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #23 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Uso-Tsuki was incensed at the very concept that someone had somehow broken his invincible defense. His bruised ego turned that fury into and outpouring of rage which he directed at the man who had just injured him. The force of his blow sent Freyd flying backwards, his nose looking and feeling like it had been broken and flattened by the impact of the larger man's shoulder. Freyd's Cheshire grin persisted, despite taking the hit. He'd struck a nerve, as well as landed a strike of his own. Uso-Tsuki was vulnerable after all. Better yet, that seemed to be about as good a hit as hit opponent could manage, and it had barely made a dent in his health bar. He now knew how to defeat the undefeatable, andthe best part was that it suited his fighting style perfectly. Standing slowly back up, backlit by the play of lightning in the dark skies overhead, Freyd appeared to be the very spirit of menace incarnate as he glowered back down at his foe. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #24 Share Posted September 28, 2020 They stared at each other across the broken ground, each warrior clenching his weapon in hand, steadying his breathing and daring his opponent to make the first move. This was it. The critical tipping point had been reached and both would soon unleash every bit of might and effort they had in hopes of defeating the other. Uso-Tsuki was a master of technique with an uncanny skill to negate the conventional talents of his enemy. In Freyd, he face a wily and unpredictable foe whose adaptability and guile was a match for his strengths. Time seemed to slow around them, again, as each took in the very essence of the space, seeking advantage in every drop of rain, whiff of ozone or clatter of loose stone. The tiniest of factors could tip the scales so evenly balanced between them. Lighting flashed and both warriors had instantly closed the distance, their weapons deadlocked as each sought to overcome the other. With every flash came another pose and counter. Raindrops froze around them and sparks flew at the meeting of their blades, though neither side could gain the upper hand. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #25 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Endless was their raging conflict. Sword and cleaver met again and again, each foe taking and losing ground in turn as they waged a private war across the island, devastating an already ruined landscape with their battle. Freyd's sword arts found no purchase against Uso-Tsuki, but rutted and broke the very stone around and under him, shattering the shale beneath his feet and pulverizing it into dust and shrapnel-like bursts of gravel that exploded through the air. The would-be chieftain countered repeatedly, his great toothy grin permanently fixed behind his wispy goatee and bald head. His heavy clothing had long since been discarded, revealing a heavily corded and muscled torso riddled with scars and tattoos commemorating his past victories. While most might have been impressed by the man's physique and size, Freyd sensed only weakness. Uso-Tsuki's frustration was growing with every minute they fought and maintained their stalemate. This had been his ploy all along. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #26 Share Posted September 28, 2020 "Fight me, coward! Enough of these trifling games!" Uso-Tsuki's frustrations were gradually undermining his focus, chipping away at his calm and control. Freyd continued to dance around the larger man with agility and speed that should have been impossible after so long a skirmish. Every word unsaid, and taunting, predatory gaze further aggravated his opponent. Uso-Tsuki's true weakness was his pride. Deny him long enough and you humiliate him. Humiliate him enough and he loses his edge. Once that moment comes to pass, his fate is sealed. Slashing his empowered blade through an exposed ridge of rock, Freyd sprays a shower of broken shards in his foe's direction, following up behind it with another barrage of flashing stabs and jabs that relentlessly pounded away, seeking the slightest slip up and vulnerability. "RAHHHHH!" The cleaver smashed into the ground where Freyd had been, but he now stood on the low ridge, already bringing up another series of slashes against the warmaster's flank. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #27 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, the two fighters found their marks at precisely the same moment. Their collision compressed the ground beneath them both, cratering the surface and emitting a Matrix-worthy bubble of force that momentarily deflected the endless and relentless downpour. Freyd fell backwards, his back shredded by the razor-like stones strewn all around by their previous clashes. They tore at his clothes as he left a long deep trench with his passage, ending up buried to his armpits. It took him a moment to shake off the effects of the impact. Clambering back out of his hole, he found Uso-Tsuki nearby. The warmaster was also extricating himself from a man-shaped impression in a hillside. He looked considerably worse for wear by comparison, but still held his mighty cleaver. The blade was badly bent but would serve just as well to carve him up if he gave it a chance. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #28 Share Posted September 28, 2020 "You're looking a little worse for wear, warmaster." Freyd stood tall, letting his body language do the talking. Uso-Tsuki, by comparison, was covered in contusions, cuts and abrasions that made him look like a far less impressive figure. The taunt infuriated him, about as much as did the potential prospect of defeat. Stomping his feet and beating his chest like some kind of primal barbarian warchief, the hulking man through himself recklessly at Freyd, who danced lightly on his feet as he gave ground. The cleaver finally found its mark again, but Uso-Tsuki's face fell and his rage abetted as it barely registered against Freyd's health bar. The Whisper in Shadows merely shook his head to confirm the denial that shattered his opponent's hope. The warmaster had met someone who was an equal to his prowess, and possibly a greater threat than him in cunning. Fear dawned in his eyes for the first time. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #29 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Freyd trivial injuries healed even as Uso-Tsuki watched. There was no was for him to defeat this foe by conventional means, and the wily black-clad warrior had proven himself resourceful enough to elude or undo all of his other tricks and gambits. Worse yet, his attacks were devastatingly effective compared to his own. Stumbling backwards as he slipped on a loose stone, he still managed to deflect Freyd's attempt to capitalize on his misfortune, launching his own riposte in return. It found no more purchase than his other strikes. "You'll not get anything from me. You know this, yes?" "That sounds like an admission of defeat, warmaster. Are you giving up already?" Freyd closed the distance between them, locking blades with his opponent's cleaver once more. But this time, it was he who leaned in to gauge the measure of his rival's resolve. It was lacking. He was slowly accepting the inevitability of his defeat, and ushering its arrival in the process. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #30 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Heaving forward, Freyd threw his opponent off balance on the same ground where he'd just stumbled. Uso-Tsuki flailed wildly and fell prone on his back. Like the lightning strikes above, Freyd was upon him and thrusting his shining blade deep into the man's chest. Shards of his digital mesh gave way as the warmaster's very form began to fracture the further down his health bar wanes. Grasping the searing blade with one hand, he strained every muscle and pulled it from his chest, lifting the sword and its wielder, then tossing both aside. Freyd skid to a stop, resuming his guard. He was breathing heavily, but from adrenaline, rather than exhaustion. It felt like his second wind was of gale force and ready to burst his chest apart with its power. Uso-Tsuki's health hung by a mere thread, dangling on the edge of oblivion. "Who leads the Spire? Who's behind all of this?!" The warmaster just grinned. Freyd was bluffing, but he had little left to lose, and Uso-Tsuki's confidence was already shattered. "It's no lie! I've experienced it. So many lost lives. How do you think I know every move and combination?" "Not the reincarnation, but its infallibility. Everything you are, Uso-Tsuki, could still vanish in a blink. I've spoken with those who have witnessed it. Your masters are using you on false promises, with the convenient omission that you can't possibly recall it when their falsehood is revealed. It's the perfect scam." "She wouldn't! No!!!" The brute charged again, their blades clashing, but there was no passion and effort behind it. Freyd deflected, tripping him and sending him sprawling into the dirt. "Is this what you've fallen to become? Some pawn in another mob's game? Fine by me. Freyd 0 Posted September 28, 2020 Author #32 Share Posted September 28, 2020 Uso-Tsuki reached for his cleaver, only to find Freyd's booted foot stepping on his wrist and the tip of Samael's Pride pressing against his neck. The warmaster's muscle flexed, as if ready to resume resistance. Then, suddenly, they eased. Insidious doubt had done what sword and fury had failed to accomplish and sapped his will to the breaking point. "You fought well, Uso-Tsuki. Your skill and courage are impressive. But are you prepared to sacrifice what you've gained for the Spire - and for 'her'? We both know the pull of oblivion. I cherish the certainty that I will only face it once. How many times have you forgotten everything you are? How many more times will you reset to nothingness and have to start the ordeal all over again? That truly is hell." Uso-Tsuki seemed pensive, his brow furrowed and eyes gazing at a memory on the horizon of his mind.
