Oscar 0 Posted October 12, 2020 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2020 (edited) <<Incognito Assassination>> Oscar figured now was as good a time as any to knock out his last quest on Floor 24. The last one had been a total pain, so he didn't have high hopes for this one. He'd heard in passing that Freyd had been one of the lucky few to wrangle this quest. Oscar sent a quick message to the man, just asking what to expect from the quest mobs. It didn't take long before Freyd fired back at him. Oscar opened the message and almost immediately frowned. Quote From: Freyd, Whisper in the Shadows HAHAHAHA- Good luck hitting anything. Boss ignores accuracy. What kind of game-breaking mob ignored accuracy? Oscar didn't have the time to ponder the shitty game design. All he could do was make the best of a bad situation. The best here being that he buffed his damage as high as it could go so that when he did hit, the mob felt it. He didn't bother with anything else. Normally, he would feel rather exposed being at almost half his usual amount of Mitigation. But, he wanted a challenge. Plus, if the mobs were that threatening, Freyd would have told him so. He might be a smooth operator, but at least Oscar could trust he would prefer not to get someone killed over a prank. With his preparations done, Oscar warped up to Floor 24 and accepted the quest - at long last - from the Chief. Oscar 0 Posted October 26, 2020 Author #2 Share Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) So first things first. Oscar had to take care of Uso-Tsuki's Bodyguards - Difendā and Purotekutā - before he could finish the quest. Freyd hadn't mentioned anything untoward about that particular phase of the quest, but Oscar decided to err on the side of caution anyway. Oscar strolled up to the quest location and looked around. He couldn't really see anyone, but deciding that he didn't want anyone to get the drop on him, he activated Parry. As soon as the hexagonal barrier flashed around his avatar, a hulking armor-clad man came screaming out of the shadows, blade flashing in the sunlight. Oscar's axe flipped up, easily deflecting the oncoming attack. In one fluid motion, Oscar grabbed the brute by the face and slammed him backwards into the ground. At that moment, a second warrior came screaming into the fray, but missed its drop-attack gloriously. Oscar hopped back, placing both warriors in his cross-hairs. Guess it was time to get this going. Oscar 0 Posted October 26, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) With one of the enemies stunned, Oscar's first thought was to hammer them as hard as he could while they were down. But there was just something about the way their counterpart moved that seemed to establish him as a more immediate threat. Oscar planted his feet and swung into the enemy, Tessleth's Fury taking on a violet glow as his Explode Catapult Sword Art began to spool up. Black flames licked at the blade, indicated that the Fallen enhancements on the weapon had activated. Much to his chagrin, however, the warrior parried his blow just as the burst of black flame radiated out from the weapon. The motion sent the explosion back into Oscar's face, taking a heft chunk out of his health bar. It had been a while since Oscar had last been hit so hard. Nevertheless, it didn't put him in the danger zone. All he had to do was trust his Battle Healing and keep swinging. Oscar 0 Posted October 27, 2020 Author #4 Share Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) It seemed that both of his opponents had some sort of special ability beyond what he would have normally dealt with. Difenda had his charge attack and Purotekuta had its parry. Oscar could only guess at their cooldowns, but it was best to try and end this battle quickly. The pair didn't seem to be exceptionally threatening - especially with everything else that Oscar had in his toolkit. Nevertheless, he couldn't help but feel as if he was taking this fight with a perhaps disproportionate level of seriousness. Oscar swung into the pair of them, catching Difenda just as he rose from his prone position. In response, Difenda attacked, slicing Oscar across the chest. Or, at least, that's what Oscar assumed the warrior was attempting to do. The attack did so little damage that the blade actually bounced off of his shoulder almost harmlessly. Purotekuta was spared damage from his assault, but seeing Difenda's damage in action made him feel that much better about where he stood in this 2-on-1. Oscar 0 Posted October 27, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) At this point, Oscar was reasonably certain that both of the enemies' abilities were on cooldown. Given the power behind Purotekuta's parry the last time, Oscar wasn't about to go screaming into that ability with another Fallen proc. But that didn't mean that Oscar could afford to squander what few windows of opportunity he got. Especially with Difenda at full health thanks to that Parry. So he charged up his Sword Art and let it fly, crashing against the duo's shields with an unholy fury. An explosion of black fire was left in Tesseleth's Fury's wake as he carved through Purotekuta's shield. With one hit, both of them were brought well into the yellow, Purotekuta's health bar tanking in the process. But Oscar wasn't done there. As he didn't hit Difenda that hard, he came running in with a thrust aimed at his gut. Oscar spun out of the way of that strike only to be caught in the ribs by Purotekuta's attack. Oscar 0 Posted October 27, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) It was more out of a desire to get the most out of his regeneration than anything else. Despite having another window to attack, Oscar instead elected to activate Parry once more. Good thing too as Difenda's charge ability seemed to have come off cooldown. Thankfully, the warrior missed him by a mile. Purotekuta, on the other hand, didn't. Oscar deflected the warrior's stab, the blade only grazing his cheek in the process. Then, he swept Purotekuta's feet out from under him. The armored warrior fell flat on his back, allowing Oscar to drive the butt of his axe into his breastplate. The maneuver caved in the armor and would drive the breath out of Purotekuta's lungs. At least, it would if Purotekuta was a human opponent. But as Cardinal liked to make things as realistic as possible, Oscar was pleased to see Purotekuta writhing on the ground and gasping for air. At least he didn't have to deal with him for a round. Oscar 0 Posted October 27, 2020 Author #7 Share Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) The fight was going well. Purotekuta was stunned and Oscar only had to deal with Difenda. He launched an Explode Catapult, angling his slice to carve through both Purotekuta lying on the ground and Difenda on his feet. His strike brought both of them down into the red. Sensing that they were on their last legs, Difenda seemed to strike with a touch more urgency. Unfortunately, it didn't help matters much. The warrior was sturdy, but had low damage. His blade bounced almost completely harmlessly off of his shoulder. Combat could very well end next round, but with his Stun wearing off on Purotekuta, somehow Oscar expected one or both of them to hang on for just a while longer. It didn't affect Oscar too much. He'd went in with the knowledge that his quest was going to be a pain and somehow that realization dulled the sting from the nonsense the quest pulled. Oscar 0 Posted October 27, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) Both of his enemies were on their last legs. He had an opportunity to end it all here. But, there was nothing to do except put his faith in his attack and let it fly. Tesseleth's Fury carved through Difenda, shaving off the final bit of hit points that he was clinging to. Difenda shattered like glass. Oscar breathed a sigh of relief when he didn't see the tell-tale crimson mist that denoted the destruction of a member of Sundered Spire. Thankfully, whatever was causing the issue hadn't reached floors this high yet. Or, perhaps, Difenda simply wasn't affected. However, his relief was soon cut short when Purotekuta managed to side-step out of the way of his attack. Oscar swore under his breath, but let the flash of anger pass. A few more rounds of combat wouldn't hurt anything. Especially considering the fact that he was back to full health after getting blasted in the face by Purotekuta's riposte a few rounds ago. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) If Difenda's ability had come off cooldown, Oscar could only guess that Purotekuta's was off cooldown as well. Judging from his last attack, Purotekuta would suffer no damage if he managed to get off a parry against him and then return it to sender. Not wanting to tank his health bar - especially with another fight ahead of him - Oscar elected to swing into Purotekuta with a basic attack. Without the damage multiplier from his Sword Arts, the warrior would only take a cool 26 damage. Which meant that only a cool 26 damage had the potential to be returned to Oscar. He tightened his grip, grit his teeth, and swung, hitting only air. Perhaps the only silver lining that Oscar could take solace in was the fact that Purotekuta missed his attack as well. With this round being a mulligan, the only thing left to do was to move on to the next one and hope that it went just a bit better. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #10 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Utilizing the momentum from his initial swing, Oscar whirled around and struck again. This time, a critical. Unfortunately, it landed at perhaps the most inopportune moment. The parry not only returned the damage back to Oscar, but it nullified the Burn proc that he'd activated. Oscar found that a little frustrating but also noted that Purotekuta's health bar was just high enough that the Burn damage wouldn't kill him. So perhaps it was all for the best. Yet again - being the genius that Purotekuta was - the warrior missed his follow-up against Oscar. Apparently today wasn't either of their day. But, unfortunately for the warrior, he wasn't going to be able to climb this mountain. Oscar was at full health and regenerated more health than the warrior could deal to him. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Oscar swung again, this time with an Explode Catapult. He knew that Purotekuta's ability would be down for the next few turns, so he could swing in without concern. Oscar missed again, but that was okay. So did Purotekuta. Where Difenda had been the more stalwart of the pair, Purotekuta was prone to more acrobatic feats in the heat of combat. Their styles complimented one another well and against a lower-level opponent, they might actually be a threat. But Oscar had ascended to the upper echelons of the player base. He owned some of the strongest equipment in the game. His health bar alone dwarfed that of his opponents. They weren't fighting their equal. Very few creatures in Aincrad had the ability to threaten a Frontliner and these two weren't it. They were, at best, an annoyance. A hurdle to be vaulted over in his pursuit of loot. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #12 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Oscar was simply swinging wildly at this point. It wouldn't take much to knock Purotekuta on his ass and have this fight done with. He found that he was hitting mostly air, but he was definitely putting the nimble warrior on the defensive. Eventually, however, his weapon found purchase. He focused on the head of his axe, finding that the blade was buried in Purotekuta's neck. The flames housed within the weapon roared to life, immolating the unfortunate combatant with deep black flame. Purotekuta shattered, the battle was won. Oscar took a look at his Energy bar and let out a heavy sigh. He'd need to wait for it to recover now before moving on to the final confrontation. He'd desperately wanted to avoid that, but nothing would suck more than getting almost to the end of the fight and running out of energy with no way to recover it. So, he laid his axe on the ground and sat down cross-legged next to it. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) As much as Oscar wanted to hurry up and get this quest done, he was thankful for the brief respite. It had been far too long since he just tried to relax. There was always something vying for his attention. But here, being on a quest and unreachable by anyone relevant, he was able to relax a bit. He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. He willed the muscles - or Cardinal's interpretation of them - in his back to relax. It was uncanny how tight his shoulders felt. Tension masterfully replicated in proportion to the inordinate amount of stress that Oscar was putting himself through. With his eyes closed and nothing but the breeze and the sounds of birds above washing over him, he could almost pretend that he was in the real world. Pain from the tension was just low enough to get through the pain dampener, lending some level of realism to his meditation. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #14 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Oscar took deep breaths. In and out. With every breath, he felt his muscles become more and more relaxed. Eventually, the tension melted away to the background - still there, but not as profound. Oscar made the most of the newfound relaxation in his back, rolling his neck to help the adjustment process. Then, he opened his eyes and let out a sigh of relief. His meditation had allowed him to view his surroundings with more focus. Not that it would help much against the final boss. As Freyd had told him, the next enemy he was to face ignored Accuracy. It would follow, then, that it also had some Evasion to make it even more slippery. If Oscar had thought Purotekuta had been a problem, something told him that he hadn't seen the extent of the nonsense this quest would pit him against. Nevertheless, he was ready. He picked his weapon up from the ground and rose to his feet. Although he knew he was in for a frustrating round of combat, the reward would be very much worth that frustration. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #15 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) As Oscar approached the location that Uso-Tsuki would be hiding out, he activated Parry. A barrier consisting of blue translucent hexagons populated around his avatar before fading just as quickly as it came. The next moment, Oscar heard the click of steel to his left. He pitched backwards, watching as a blade passed right by his face - where his whole head had been just a moment prior. He planted his back foot and grabbed the arm attached to the blade and, using his immense strength, jerked sharply to the left. A man was flipped ass over head and slammed into the ground by the motion. Uso-Tsuki. Oscar released his enemy and stepped back, giving the boss enough breathing room to get back on his feet. While he could have pressed his advantage, Oscar didn't really want to do that. If this was going to be a protracted battle, Oscar would make sure to enjoy it. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #16 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Oscar stepped forward after Uso-tsuki was back on his feet, his weapon trailing behind him. The pair of them circled one another, waiting for the other to make a mistake that they could capitalize on. But, after a while, Oscar got tired of waiting. He stepped forward and swung his axe, more as a token gesture of an attack than anything else. He missed, as he expected. He hadn't really even been trying to hit. Uso-Tsuki lashed out, twisting his blade into an elegant thrust aimed for Oscar's heart. Oscar waited until the last moment to spin out of the way. Though Oscar should have had some emotional involvement - Uso-Tsuki was the bad guy here - he didn't. He was certainly a more capable and elegant fighter than Oscar thought Cardinal was capable of. Though neither of them said a word, both of them knew that this was a test of skill and not of strength. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Oscar had to take a step back in order to get the clearance to swing his axe. Uso-Tsuki seemed to know this and did his level best to try and keep himself planted firmly in Oscar's face. Try as he might, he just couldn't shake the warrior off enough to get a hit off. So, Oscar relegated himself to the defensive. Because Uso-Tsuki's weapon was so much shorter and more nimble, the warrior was able to pepper Oscar with a barrage of swift strikes. Thankfully, Oscar was able to dodge or deflect the blows, preventing Uso-Tsuki from getting any damage in. None of the attacks seemed to be that powerful. Uso-Tsuki was just testing Oscar's comptency. Looking for some blind spot that he could press. Oscar didn't let any show, however. Not that any of his blind spots were anything that Uso-Tsuki could use to his advantage. He didn't have the stopping power to put him down. Oscar 0 Posted October 28, 2020 Author #18 Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Because Oscar couldn't get Uso-Tsuki out his face, he went yet another round without being able to attack. But then Uso-Tsuki made his first mistake: he actually managed to land a hit on Oscar. While he had Parry active. And Justified Riposte off cooldown. The warrior's blade sunk into his chest, dealing one measly point of damage. Then, Oscar grabbed Uso-Tsuki's wrist, laughed heartily, and ripped the blade out. Then, he swept the warrior's feet out from under him and placed his hand on the back of Uso-Tsuki's head. Then, he drove the warrior's face into the stone beneath their feet with so much force that the stone cracked. Uso-Tsuki went limp - stunned - and Oscar was finally able to take a step backward to get some breathing room. Combat was starting to favor him now. He had a high chance to hit and Uso-Tsuki's offensive had been broken. Stripped of its evasion properties, the quest boss would be all too vulnerable to Oscar's crippling offensive. Unfortunately, Oscar missed his mark by a mile. But it was okay, he thought to himself. He came into this knowing full well what awaited him. Accuracy simply did not work against this boss so even if Oscar stripped Evasion, it would still be very difficult for him to get a clean hit off. What was most important was that Oscar could set the stage for the upcoming rounds. Uso-Tsuki would be getting up soon and Oscar couldn't afford to have him in such close proximity that he couldn't swing his weapon again. He stepped back and shifted his grip lower on the haft of his axe. Under ordinary circumstances, it would be difficult to check the weight of the head and he would lose control of the weapon more easily. But that wasn't the case in Aincrad. Tesseleth's Fury buried itself deep into Uso-Tsuki's shoulder. Flames roared to life on impact, sealing the wound with burnt flesh and leaving a nasty Burn debuff on the unfortunate quest boss. With a vicious follow-through, Oscar tore the weapon free of Uso-Tsuki's flesh. The battle was reminiscent of Terra Firma. The main mechanic of that battle had been overcoming the beasts <<Assault Mode>>. But the main caveat was that Terra Firma would switch its Accuracy and Evasion values depending upon which was needed at the moment - Accuracy when attacking and Evasion when defending. Uso-Tsuki's stats were static but he had the advantage of ignoring Accuracy. It boiled down to essentially the same mechanic, however.
