ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 #1 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Back again, huh? Chase is back. Back to the twenty second floor for yet another trip with good loot waiting on him. He yawned and stretched, not looking down the same path that led him to the grottos filled with treants, but instead over towards where the lakeside seemed to be. He had heard of some rumors of interesting monsters living by there, but he had never gone over to see it for himself. If the stallion that he and NIGHT had fought on the same floor was anything to go by though, he could only imagine what horrors could possibly await- probably some less electrifying ones. He'd expect a native species, like some merman or anything like that. Something at least closer to the water, maybe a sea serpent tribe or something, anything to make them stick out from the rest of the floor. So far he'd seen all forms of wildlife, fantasy creatures and even shadows and astral type monsters between the trees. Now it was time to truly blow him out of the waters though, the ones he'd thankfully never literally enter. "Let's see what awaits us here then." ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #2 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) And so, his little venture near the lakeside began, walking down around where he, Shay, Krysta and Astralin were picking up stars during the festival. He was still very early into the second tier by the time that it all began, making him feel rather nostalgic about it. Same way that he felt with Ozwald when he was questing around the first few floors, a smile crossed his lips while he silently continued down the path he was going. As anticipated, something was lurking however inside of the waters. It didn't take too much thought for Chase to swiftly change weapons and keep his blade handy, and of course it came in right away when four fish-people jumped right out at him. So he was right with his prediction in the first place, there were mermaids and mermen in this world too, huh? The amount of variety that one could see in a single floor was beginning to get very astounding. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 1, 2, 3 & 4! ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) The most other monsters he had seen in a floor were that fungi-people camp all the way back down to the eleventh when he'd rescued some NPCs and stopped them from coming out of the underground. It was a short adventure, but alas, an adventure no less. He actually enjoyed some of the mob killing sprees for what they were, but when there was a reason to do them like breaking through a monster settlement's ranks, maybe crippling a looming threat bit by bit or reaching some mystical treasure at the very end, he was always up for it. He was now curious what he could find by the end however, considering they appeared desperate to stop him from cutting a path through. One with a curved sword, another with tridents and two with... whatever weapons those were, they tried to assault him one after the other. But with graceful dodges and powerful counterattacks, he managed to take all four out with relative ease. Huh. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 1, 2, 3 & 4! ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #4 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) And just when the going got very easy, Chase happened to let his guard down. A mistake that he'd paid for plenty of times, and he could remember every single one of them off the top of his head. With the next set of Merman's showing up, he twirled on the back of his heel and hit all four with a single attack, but he left his defense wide open in return. Before he could jump back, he found his HP almost cut in half with a slash, a jab and a whatchamacallit. He landed back on the ground with gashes all over the front of his body, frowning and glaring down the monsters who seemed to be smirking, having gotten more confidence than before solely from the amount of damage they managed to inflict on the player. How easy it was for even the artificial constructs to get more arrogant with their combat, it genuinely amused him. Or it would if his health wasn't critically low right now. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Not critically low as in he was close to dying, but if he was even within their attack range and if, somehow, all four would manage to get a hit on him, he'd be in grave danger. That's what he considered a 'critical' range. He made sure to take them out right away, looking at his health that was on half and slowly regenerating back to full as he let out a deep sigh. "God forbid I drop my guard for two seconds, I should be more careful. I got a bit too carefree because of my Snow Cloak. Finally put a Frost Aura item to use and here's the result, heh." That's not to say that the enhancement was bad, but he hadn't paired the best of 'tanking' items along with his loadout. As much mitigation as he might have, the protein he was buffed with would definitely cripple him as much as it would help him. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 5, 6, 7 & 8! ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) At least cripple him in terms of defense. "Honestly, this form of combat is way too simple... There's nothing to worry about, other than will I kill them first or will they manage to get a hit in. I'm not sure I like it much.". He was still nostalgic for this form of combat, but it was way too dangerous and hard to defend against the monsters going this way. Because he couldn't put a stop to their attacks, overpower them or do anything but dodge and hit, and see the same in return. His blade made up for enemy dodges, but this was just a constant back and forth he had to deal with. In the meantime, he'd managed to clear another group of mermans while getting hit once in return, thankful that his battle healing was still kicking into effect even if he was too used to having the rest of his defensive enhancements from his overcoat handy. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #7 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) And with another blow, all of the mermans that had shown up thus far went down into the ground, shattering into shards and fleeting just above the lake before disappearing. The same course every monster and player passed away, the way that items disappeared and one left the plane of existence they were on- that being Aincrad. Chase saw the barrage of loot windows suddenly show up, bombarding him with tons of Col and goodies that he could only welcome with open arms. For how much he was putting himself at danger, he greatly appreciated even the tiniest of drops, but these weren't tiny. If anything, these were the real drops that he needed and wanted to be getting. Because now, he could get really going with pumping items to gran and getting good uniques in return. Maybe, he'd manage to get something better than his overcoat right now, although he did severely doubt that happening. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 9, 10, 11 & 12! ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) The rain of Mermans jumping out of the lakeside and in front of Chase's path to stop him from rounding the lake was starting to get as predictable based on his previous travel to this floor as it was infuriating. They just kept pestering him on and on, while never really doing much to put him in real danger. Thankfully, for however wounded he was, he could still dodge just fine and his battle healing was doing as stellar a job at keeping him alive as ever. He was honestly starting to wonder if it was always like this on every floor and he was just unlucky to have it happen now of all times, granted that the exact same thing happened with the treants. He knew that this was the last group he could afford to fight before moving further away to recover some energy though, running low on fuel because of the constant slashing and dodging. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Finally taking it out with another slash and slide to the side, he began to breathe heavily and took a few steps away from the lakeside, falling back on the short grass and smiling. Monsters in this floor didn't come attack you after all unless you went looking for them, but it seemed they really wanted you to look for them. They were just that prepared after all. Honestly, having lived in Aincrad for so long made so many questions arise in Chase's mind. He wasn't a gamer. yet he was trapped in a game. If this wasn't VR, would he still have enjoyed it or even thought of trying it out? ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #10 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Regardless, he wanted to know more about games like this. Everybody, except for him, appeared to be a gamer of sorts. It intrigued him, seeing just how pretty, magnificent and thrilling SAO could be, despite the fact they were trapped in there at the cost of their own lives. Since all sense of normality had been forcibly removed from these ten thousand players trapped in, he couldn't do anything but embrace his current predicament. Opening his inventory, he took out two potions from the ones he'd gotten when he started the game, chugging one down. Alongside his out of combat regeneration, it really helped get some healing done and out of the way. More happy thoughts continued to swirl around his head as he let out a deep exhale and smiled, looking at the evening sky. "... I can't really say I even hate Aincrad all this much after all, can I?" ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) He definitely could not. As the health potion was completely chugged down, the vial it was in shattered in his hands and broke into shards that flew right up to the sky, making him drop a hand with its back onto his forehead, resting slightly and enjoying the soft breeze, the howling of the wind passing and the moment more than anything. There was only so much that he could do to rest, but this was definitely a short break he needed more than anything. Popping the other flask he took out open, he chugged it down all the same but much faster, seeing his health enter a much too safe range. It was a good thing, to have himself back near full within minutes of dropping that low, being able to step out of combat and be his carefree self again. Maybe he should be more honest with himself or welcoming to a change. [ChaseR uses Starter Healing Potion. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #12 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Not so much a change of pace as much as a change of character, really. He was who he was, of course. Crass, bold, sensitive and mostly lonely, but he still wanted a company, he wanted to know Aincrad better and get to enjoy his time here much more. Because just like the real world, it was timed. They would eventually get out, and it wouldn't be too long from now- although he knew he'd feel the passage of time much stronger than it would be. The two or so years he thought it'd take for them to get out would feel like a decade or two to him. He already felt like a few months had passed since two weeks now, and kept on reliving and relishing the memories in the back of his head, more fondly than ever whenever he was with Ozwald, that newbie. Maybe he'd be happier around the lower, carefree players. He had to find some weak spot to start opening up, either way. Maybe that's the change he needed. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) While pondering what he could do to make his situation better any, the bluehead decided he shouldn't dillydally too much. These thoughts could continue once the monsters around him were less bloodthirsty and he was resting back in the warm embrace of his own home. A much safer environment to be thoughtful in, after all. "... I wonder how many people there are that I still haven't met down here. There's thousands of us but I've barely met... what, twenty? Maybe that's overdoing it." Of course, meeting referred to only personal encounters. He'd seen plenty more in the few raids he'd done like the event dungeons or the boss fight against the Sundered Spire that attacked his home floor. As much as he wanted to push these recurring thoughts back, he was already fighting and still pondering the same things over and over, as if something would change the longer he went on. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #14 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) He managed to successfully pound another group of mermen away, dispatching them swiftly before the next followed. They were as resilient as ever, seeming unwavering despite all the damage they kept taking. They dealt hits to Chase, and he did the very same back, without failure every single time. It was the same constant back and forth that Katoka, Vie, Elora, Grimm, the same that everybody has or would have gone through, sooner or later. Leaving all the monsters crippled with a low slash to their legs, he raised his sword in the air in order to take them out once and for all- maybe two more groups and then would be a good time to call it a day. That would probably do. He was being a bit too merciless with the monsters, and the best part was that he didn't even know they would respawn. He was still too unfamiliar with how games worked, thinking that monsters had a personality of their own. Like familiars. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 21, 22, 23 & 24! ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #15 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) If somebody were to mention the word 'respawn' to him, he would definitely draw a blank and look at them as if they were speaking a whole other language. Not that it wasn't, this occurrence had happened plenty of times with the boy. Somebody dropped a gaming term, he didn't understand anything, they elaborated and then went to ask him how come he bought SAO if he wasn't a gamer. Maybe it hadn't happened in far too long now lately though, huh? Bringing down his blade onto the mermen, he watched them shatter and dismissed the loot window with a small grin. He was getting better and better at taking monsters out on his own, which meant he'd only be even better as time went on when it came to dealing with groups, too. And critical hits mean I'll be dealing more damage, and given my Fragmented Blade's effect, I'll be able to deal tons more damage and paralyze my enemies all at once. If I keep it up this way, I'll be closer than ever to solving Calrex' mystery and finding out more about unique skills faster than ever before too-" He would have continued his inner ramblings indefinitely if it wasn't for two attacks bringing him back to reality- he'd sent his own attacks off to the monsters, but the issue were the two spears that had gone through his arms. He pulled back and retaliated, but the damage was there. He'd definitely have to take a break and pop the last of his starter potions around here if he wanted to be safe. Probably best between this group and the next, which happened to also be the last one. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 25, 26, 27 & 28! All of their bodies shattered with four synchronized, familiar blips, and the fight was over. Four more mermen and he would be done, but before that he wanted to be perfectly safe with it all- he'd chug the potion right down before continuing, beginning to look through his inventory again. Maybe this is why daydreaming mid-battle was a bad habit of his. In terms of change, he could do with cutting that out too, huh? It was alright to do that here, since he could stop anytime he wanted, but in a dungeon or boss fight, this would set him in a much worse position. One it was... best not to even think about. "It's alright. Just four more and then I'll go back anyways, I've gotten plenty of items as is." Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Merman 25, 26, 27 & 28! There wasn't any other way to get them of course, and that was alright. Fifty health was a good amount but nothing to be worried about. "I'm guessing that the rest show up as soon as I take a few steps forward, so I'll just let my survival healing kick in for a while longer...", he planned out in the back of his head, turning to look at the lake in the meantime. The same lake that the comet had evaporated before, and thankfully it was perfectly back to normal. It looked so pretty, reflecting the setting sun's orange light, like a sea of crystals floating by. One of the most beautiful sights in Chase's life, and he was certain he wouldn't have gotten the chance to see anything like that if he wasn't in here. Another reason to not completely hate the world. No, Aincrad was good. It didn't do anything 'malicious'. [ChaseR uses Starter Healing Potion. ChaseR 0 Posted October 22, 2020 Author #19 Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Chase knew who to direct his hatred at. Who to be angry at. That was Kayaba. He was the one who tainted this world, and for what? He couldn't answer that. He had plenty of questions that he wanted to ask him, but they had lots of time until they reached the hundredth floor and went back out in the real world. Even then, he would probably just be arrested and out with it- alas, Chase could still hope. For now, getting his head back in the game was what he had to do, literally and metaphorically. He looked to the side at the final group of mermaids that was rippling in the waters, expecting Chase to make a step forward in order to begin the encounter. And so, Chase did exactly that, watching them jump out and try to attack him right away. A foolish mistake, as he raised his sword in the air and slashed them all to the side, knocking them not only out of the air but also on their backs, unable to counterattack him before he got the chance to finish them off. He wiped some sweat off his forehead and ran through his item log to see just how much loot he'd gotten, smiling widely at the mere prospect that he'd get stuff as good as he had last time- and the one before, so on so forth. His house was the first destination, in order to rest. After that, came a visit to Simmone's shop- something she should be more than expecting by now. "And I'm coming back home Blizz. I might have something to give you too, in terms of food, hm~?", he chirped inside of his head, having noticed the abnormal amount of sea gems that he'd found. Seeing as Blizz' foods of choice were... questionable, there was nothing preventing the little rascal from trying his hands on these. Regardless, the journey was over.
