[BR-F25] Paving the Way to Floor 26 [Shadow, the Malevolent]

With Jomei and Mac cleaving through everything, only a single Shadowling was left close to the group Chase had been assigned, and what more fitting way to end this? For what felt like the first time in forever, his blade began to glow and quickly flashed, momentarily blinding even him. By the time that the flash was over, there was no shadowling left before the bluehead.

"All shadowlings are dead.", he told the rest and nodded, quietly looking around to see if any more were near- there appeared to be a few near the fourth party, but they were getting taken care of quickly. The Shadow won't have any other chance to spawn more minions, and will be forced to confront them, right? It felt like the fight was going at a snail's pace, from the menace that Orgoth was, to whatever the Shadowlings were supposed to be. A pleasant break, but way too long for his taste- he'd rather just get this over with as soon as possible. "Think he'll come fight now?", he asked his own group quietly and gave an uncertain, mostly tired look, sighing.

Orgoth was stirring to life once more. It brought a small warmth to her heart to see him doing alright after the awful experience that he went through with the Shadow using him like a sock puppet. She wanted nothing more to pound the ever loving shit out of the coward and drag his ass into the light.

The tiny shadow-bodies danced around the paladin as she prepared her next attack. The massive lance she brandished burned a beautiful pink color as it scraped the air and into the faces of her opponent. With the damage that she had dealt, her group would be able to finish off the rest of the Shadowlings with ease. If not, her thorns would offer a good cushion damage to weaken them further. 

"The battle is almost over! Once we finish these cretins off we can face our true enemy hiding like the coward he is. Conserve your energy and be ready to put everything into the cowards hide when he appears!"

[The Shadow 3]

♪ ♪ [Resurgence of the Light] ♪ ♪

Darkness faltered as the ranks of Shadowlings broke, felled by spear, axe, blade and perseverance.  Only a handful remained, rallying up against the thick, black, soup-like substance gathering at the light’s edge.  Undulating as it spread, like sinister, gravity-defying and malevolent molasses, the liquid layer quickly consumed the inner walls and ceiling entirely.  It had already taken everything that once lay beyond, including their friends and loved ones.   All could all sense it seething with Shadow’s will.  An endless sea of forgotten faces pressed against it from behind, crushed by devouring tides with no other destination left to find.  It hungered still, but the light held fast, just barely.  

Metal suddenly clashed with stone and reborn, resounding purpose, bringing with it a desperately needed ring of hope. Then it rang again, and again, and again. With growing strength and determination, Orgoth struck the flat of his twin axes in time against the floor, building momentum in keeping with the beating of his own resurgent faith, returning to it the fire and blaze of righteous fury.  Each haggard player in the host around him felt it also, burning and thrumming through their bodies with renewed vigor.  The very surface of hate that surrounded them reflected it back with every thundering blow, only helping to gird their drive for victory.

Fate would not be written here, save for their enemy.

The hour of Shadow’s fall was nigh.

Finding no solace in the void that rejected them for their failures, the lingering Shadowlings were left with no viable option but ignoble sacrifice.  Gathering the dregs of their exhausted horde, they surged and fell against the nearest gathered champions, crashing like the last, dark, cresting waves of night, knowing nothingness would follow, finally calling them home.

• [Spotted] - When the attacking party has a [Pillar Fragment] or a [Glowstone] active, lower the Shadowling's EVA by 1. Players with the [Night Vision] mod will gain 1 ACC against Shadowlings.
• [Seeking the Unperturbed] - At the beginning of a new rotation, re-distribute the number of active Shadowlings across all parties. Shadowlings that get shifted will lose all hate values on their current targets if any, and will only be capable of being attacked by their assigned party. The following priorities should be taken into consideration when distributing Shadowlings:
  • 1. Ensure all parties have enough Shadowlings to meet party member cap first. (eg. 5 members in a party, 5 shadowlings) Shadowlings should then be evenly distributed from thereon, starting from the first party.

Raidou recovers 93 via Battle Healing

A high pitch whir in light, a faint essence of crimson painted down the osmium bastard sword. A redirect and that energy become fueled with the static of the king, the one felled by the swordsman almost in solidarity. It was trapped in his very fiber. Without warning it darts down the blade to the point and back to the hilt. A breakneck blur, his robe struggling to keep pace as every speed inducing skill fires at once. A vacuum at his back and one long drawn arc send what little remained barreling off like stones with a shattering like thunder, skipping and grinding bodies against the darkened stone below to a halt. A division of forces, a weakening of the wall.

The wanderer shifts, slides the steel blade up the side of his left arm against panels that lay beneath his cloth cover. A pause to shift his glasses and a quick glance across the field. Taking in what was left, odds of success, and the state of the group. The odds were in their favor, but there were factors still left to decipher. This overwatching gaze shifts to Orgath who had recovered his faculty. The hum echos the chamber, Raidou pays the NPC titan a nod. An ally saved and another soldier. That decree from a slamming weapon was an anthem of war. Facing forward and beginning to bleed an aura of defiance, fighting spirit against all odds. He takes a couple of steps forward and mutters between his breath and the sounds of the slaughter at his back.

With no more shadowlings being spawned in, and the boss itself looking both angry and nervous, as well as Orgoth finally on his feet and looking ready for a fight, he was guessing that they were going to have a final phase coming up soon. Music even started to play in the background to set up the mood. As everyone slowly finished off the shadowlings, they all began making preparations for this final phase. As Itzal charged at the last shadowling in his party, he slashed it's knees while ducking it's swing, thrust his blade into it's back, then pulled the blade upward slicing it in half from the chest up. With it destroyed he checked his party's status. Everyone seemed to be on full health which was good, but most of everyone's energy was beginning to run low. The price of AoE costs and constantly landing hits he supposed. Not to mention that the higher your damage multiplier the quicker your energy ran out. And given that everyone here had one higher than his, he could see how he had the most energy out of everyone. However. He wasn't going to be attacking the boss right off of the bat. He still needed to use some debuffs. And even then, it would seem that the bosses were being given resistances to certain debuffs... He had to make his choice wisely on which to use.

Baldur watched as once again Raidou using his stunning ability to weaken the shadows that surrounded him, even managing to take one out. Thankfully, Shield had given the gaijin samurai another buff. It was enough that these Shadowlings were not a challenge anymore. 

"This is it everyone." He watched as Night engaged the final shadow.

"Phase 3. Likely the final phase. Push on a little more and we get to the next floor."

What would the next floor be? Hopefully something more peaceful than the current one. Something with sunshine. Something where you could see the blue skies outside of the tower, and maybe some mountains and forests. It had been a long time since they had once of those.

"Be prepared for the Shadow to be the hardest fight yet, but know that we have this!"

With a flourish of his blade, Baldur became a blur of motion, slicing through four of the shadows in a zig-zag arc of blue and orange light.

It huffed as it waved about its sword. No sign of danger, merely a whipping swing; even if it had meant to be lethal, NIGHT would've easily caught it and swept it aside.

"Yeah, that's it."

The player's eyes narrowed at the remark.

Fingers traced the side of the gash. Nothing but stardust was left in its wake as the light started to fade away from its form. The construct chuckled lightly, flicking away the fractals from its hand. Eyes closed in the darkness, only a few steps were taken by it before it stopped short of its quarry.

NIGHT knew to stiffen and hold the flat of her blade up.

"I knew I could count on you."

One clasp. It wrapped itself around her jaw, skin and leather sitting comfortably by her neck. Too close for comfort.

The figment only sneered.

"You really are..."

"..."

A beat passed, before its form disintegrated with a smile. Her skin tingled as she felt the contact burst like a sizzle from a blazing grill. Eyes to the floor, her parting action was but to meet the remnants of their touch with the pads of her fingers.

In the midst of the receding polygons, NIGHT wiped the sting away subtly with a solemn yet annoyed expression.

The distorting darkness was gone, and with his teammate's last attack it seemed the remaining shadowling was dispersed. There was nothing left of the mobs on the battlefield, with the only two non-player monsters remaining being Orgoth and the Shadow. However, the deep blue armored knight could hear the words of the people around him, warning them of the final phase that was to come. With no actions to be taken, and his <<Parry>> effect still active, Calrex gave a small sigh, letting his mind contemplate on what he should do next, "With the mobs gone, that only leaves the Shadow, which could mean a single target. If that is the case I'll need to swap back to Martial Arts in order to maximize my potential damage. However, there is the chance I may need to swap out with Ariel for tanking, so I'd need to be sure I can reach my full defensive array if necessary..."

Raising his right arm the Ultramarine Knight pulled down his menu, manually selecting his equipment to change. The massive axe-sword resting on his shoulder vanished before another burst of light surrounded his forearms, solidifying into the Grand Gauntlets III. It did use up enough time that any opening he had to make an action were used up, but at this point he deemed it better to have <<Quick Change>> prepared for any last minute shifts in the flow of battle.

"With Parry active, it would be a waste if I popped another Safeguard potion, especially with my Vengeful Riposte. If a big attack does come, it would be best to return some of that damage back."

There was now not many of the sahdowlings left. They had almost killed every last one. Zandra looked down on her axe with a big smile. ‘’Hehe, I got you for killing tons of those shadowlings back then. And now you have helped me to kill another tons of shadowlings. You really didnt disapointed me.’’ She said. Zandra had talked to the axe like it wasn’t a weapon, but more a person, or a dear friend. Then her smile faded a bit. ‘’But yeah, you are not him.’’ She glanced at Oscar. ‘’You know, I do miss him. All those times it was just us, those exciting moments, the reason we could keep going was because of his protection and the fire in inside him. Nothing personal, but I will try get him back when this bit** is dead.’’ After she had held her little conversation, Itzal had charged forward and killed the last of the mobs that was focused on their party. Watching as the last of Shadow's pets fell, Freyd felt unsatisfied.  A powerful, thrumming beat pulsed in his head, causing his eyes to twitch as they sought other targets.  Hunger from the blade in his hands threatened to breach and overflow the shallow seal containing the void within.  Grip tightening over the hilt, he felt it sizzle, threatening to burn its wielder for following the darkness too closely.  The blade's tip fell and touched the ground, connecting with itself as cast upon the broken stone floor.  

What are you doing Freyd?  What madness have you unleashed upon yourself this time?  Stop this nonsense and return to reason.  There is nothing left to fight.

There is always something left to fight.

Samael's Pride surged, fracturing the stone as the blade forced itself to dig in, seeking nothing it could find.  Black ooze wept from his face, as it had from Orgoth's, but would find no purchase in his soul.  He had seen her face among the Shadowlings, and nothing mattered anymore.  If it was true, and she was gone, he would cast himself like waves upon the shore until he broke the continent or the ocean swallowed him and finally forced him to fall still. 

Shadow's actions had achieved what words could not: Freyd was angry.  But this was more than anger: it was rage, and of a type he had not felt in over a decade.  Its last expression had left a boy crippled, two lives ruined, and a fortress-prison cocooning a bleak and withered heart.  Remarkable effort had been required to break down those walls and start to feel again, and now this.  

Fuck Shadow.  Fuck life.  FuCK EVERYTHING!

This isn't you, Freyd.  This isn't who she saw when she looked at you.

Somehow, that image reached him.  Clenching his teeth until they felt like they would crack, he drove the blade deeper into the ground until the same viscous black liquid on the walls and ceiling bubble up around it.  This wasn't over, and there was time yet left for vengeance.  Pulling back the sword and standing tall once more to gaze upon the battlefield, Freyd took a deep breath and buried his problems back down again.  Wiping a black-gloved hand across his cheek, he smeared the villain's lingering blight over his face like war paint just as it rekindled his determination.  The sword resumed its poise just as he regained his stance.  It was time.

Damn it, Montjoy.  I really hate it when you're right.

Until now, Shield had been absorbed in the fight. Until now, the battle had raged and kept Shield's mind engaged. The ebb and flow had been under his dark-eyed watch, and even in the worst of the darkness he had employed his newly-gotten <<Night Vision>> to keep his awareness of the enemy and his allies sharp. Now, with the last of the shadowlings gone and seemingly unable to be replaced, the immediate moment did not demand his attention thoroughly enough to completely absorb it. For the first time, he allowed himself to truly take in the optical tortures that the Shadow had laid out for the front lines. Familiar faces returned his gaze, and for a moment, behind his stony mask, he faltered. He had not been faced with his children since he and Calypso had wandered into the damnable hallway of mirrors. There, they had been crystal clear. Now, they were distorted and warped in the reflections of the Shadow.

However, that last experience had given him strength. It had been a reminder of what he was on the front lines to accomplish. His moment of weakness became a pulsating heat in the pit of his stomach. He tempered that rage, taking in and releasing a slow but deliberate breath.

That thing is the immediate obstacle keeping me from them. I may not be able to hit it hard enough to count...

His eyes shifted between Baldur, whom he had just empowered, and NIGHT, whose energy stores were likely most volatile.

So I'm going to power up the ones who can...

His axe arm extended in front of him. At the end of the head, a bead of white light appeared and began to grow. Narrowing his eyes, he compressed that energy, causing its surface to beam out bright rays that licked his shield and the ground in front of him. A hum sounded through the air as the energy within the orb struggled to escape, but Shield's resolve held, as tit its edges. He slashed through the air, sending the light into NIGHT's shoulder. With that, he gave a stiff nod to the allies he had been supporting. His own role in the battle was about to change, and until he could make sure he had the situation in hand, he was about to be very focused on that.

Kick its ass.

The sudden lull within the battle caught him off guard. It seemed that the entities that were haunting the bunch were slow to keep up with. Thoughts raced inside his mind as he glanced toward Raidou and fellows who cleaned up the monsters. Albeit that it was his first real dungeon raid, he was unsure how to proceed. It seemed too convenient. His mind had to stay sharp while his side was pressed against Haine.

He tried to stay in formation so the group would stay in a 360 view of the not so bright room. He spoke to Haine as he glanced over at her. “I’ll watch your back if you watch mine.” It was small conversation to break the silence. The heavy silence would soon return once again. His personality was relatively relaxed and upbeat but the thought of this darkness made his skin crawl. What was still lurking in the darkness around them was moving in his mind and would it be able to kill them.

[Haine 0]

In minutes, every last entity erased itself from the field. Among the darkness stood the boss himself, irate. Twin axes scraped against the ground as the figure drew closer, and along with that, the woman's anxiety spiked. This had been the strongest battle she'd faced yet. She was holding her own well - for now, but who was to know what tricks Orgoth had up its sleeve? She'd heard of the horrors that graced the front lines, and for it to go so smoothly this far, she feared what else was to come. The final phase, a few comrades uttered. Her palms felt clammy as she gripped her glaive, staring head on at the opposing threat. She'd gotten herself into this and there was no other way out than to face it head on. She drew in a sharp, ragged breath and willed away her nerves. A clang of the beast's axe and she sprung into action.

Blue locks whipped over her shoulders and she turned to Kiluia. She glanced at his calm, bright composure. "You bet, love!" she chimed in, a bright smile following. She could put on a strong front like the others here, like Kiluia, even with his nerves. She could feel the slightest tensing of his shoulders as she laid her palms flat on them. "Let's give em' hell." She squeezed his shoulders affectionately and her eyes fluttered shut. A fluorescent glow transferred from her fingertips, rejuvenating the man's energy. She pulled away and planted a swift kiss on his cheek. A brief exchange and she was back on her toes,  assessing her next move.

[The Shadow 3]

The last remaining shadowlings crashed harmlessly into the field of blades and other weaponry wielded by the gathered host of champions, and were snuffed out like any other nightmare at the waking moment.  Orgoth struck his iron axes resoundingly several more times before standing in the ruined and largely vacant chamber.  There was nothing left around them, save a few jagged bits of rock, the ring of stone columns near its centre, a badly broken floor and the hovering crown of lights above.  Even the outer walls were gone, having been swallowed by the flood of liquid bad sloshing vertically at the light’s edge and along the ceiling above.

“Thank you heroes,” Orgoth said, his voice booming with retuning vigor, “for returning and bringing me back to my senses.”  Tendons creaked like old leather as he stood, accompanied by the sounds of joints snapping and popping after straining in place for too long.  

“You have failed, Shadow!  Do you hear?  Those gather here will defy you with their dying breaths!”

The void-like water settled into perfect stillness around them, carrying the strange sensation of being trapped in an air bubble.  The last air bubble, if there was any truth to Shadow’s taunts.  The same, slithering voice that had spoken to them from the darkest recesses of their minds returned, sounding both eager and self-assured.

“Offer accepted.”

Hundred of eyes and randomly sprinkled toothy smiles appeared along the surface of the stilled nothing all around them.  As wary and watchful as the players were, all attention was focused outward.  No one noticed the silent figure slink into existence from Orgoth’s shadow.  It just seemed to step in with a blink.  Orgoth felt the cold, black tendrils rise up from his own shade and firmly grasp his legs and turned to strike.

“Too late.”

Hefting the giant bull-man like he weighed nothing, the tendrils swung him full round the room, smashing all of the original stone columns and dashing the dim torches that had lingered on their outer faces.  The storm surged, pressing inward and closing the bubble tighter around them.  Orgoth slashed and severed the grasping things, sending himself hurtling into the outer walls with a heavy thud that sent ripples outward on the mirror-liquid’s surface.  For better or worse, it seemed solid.  

“You all wanted to play?  Fine.  Let’s play.  One.  Last.  Time.”

Shadow snapped his fingers, and scores more tendrils burst forth from every direction, lashing and thrusting at everything in room all at once.  Standing in the middle of the gathered storm, unleashed, Shadow cackled with mad glee.  So far as he was concerned, this was always how things had been meant to end.

Raidou adjusts his lenses, a signature glare produced by the lights that dwindled about the chamber. Orgoth seemed roaring to go, doing the first blow and within a moment of slaughter there was tinge of exhaustion and pain. "I've felt that arm of yours, focusing on using it. You've played your part and let us shoulder the burden for a while." Raidou mutters to Orgoth hoping that perhaps he could hear them. A thickened like smog begins to emanate from the captain of the vanguard. "Jackob's Ladder, Tarot, Firm Anima, ATP, and those of you that have simply chose to stand with us. The fight begins now. Let's finish this charade, I believe he wants to see what hell looks like. Let's give it to him"

His voice almost boomed, filled with ire in the strangest fashion. It seemed to carry with enough gusto to fill the chamber, bouncing off the walls. A blackened network cracking the floor beneath them and pouring out of the cracks. Tendril's begin to worm from the openings as if it was to scare them. But an array of multicolored arts begin to engulf the chamber, a guillotine waiting to finally fall now that a monarch had been produced. A glance to @Shield, he was more then ready to make the exchange once the man was in position.

"Haine give it everything you've got think the Sea Wyvern but bigger, time to put that weapon to use. Kiluia follow up, and punch through its defenses like Blood Bane." Raidou began to recall strategy ironed out through a journey. A glance to Freyd and he need not say a thing, nothing more then a nod as they reciprocated prior knowledge. "If I make an opening can you use it?" Raidou looked directly to @Hidden, and then at @Ariel - The Crowned Lion. Both had used his special brand of tanking and knew how to. He then scanned the chamber to a multitude of faces, a wave of memories and fights where he'd played that very same part. A smile as they start to sort out, this would be one hell of a test chaining this many together but he knew that a lack of trying would mean instant failure. After what had felt like ages, the fight was truly on. No puppeteering, no more tricks, just the fight that they were promised. Chase held his sword firmly and as soon as the shadow was done talking, tendrils began to writhe all over the place. He made sure to dodge them, hearing Raidou just start ranting. Off to a great start.

"Stop running your mouth and hit him so we can go home.", he tiredly shouted just loud enough for the wanderer to hear, having made his way over to the towering figure and jumping forwards. With a spin and blue glow from his broken blade, he turned and managed to land a nice, wide cut on his form, making his way back to the party carefully and looking at it right in the eyes. "If you need to back down Mac, tell me and I'll take it from there.", Chase quietly advised his vanguard and looked behind at the rest of the group, failing to spot one of them... Who was it though?

Thing were moving by Macradon fast, it was done before he even noticed, as if he was slowly losing connection to reality around him. He seemingly dozed off for a short second “Is this the fatigue … the actual reason I had to temporarily retire last raid? Am I finally feeling the drawbacks from all this fighting .. all this high intensity movement? He would try to shake it off as Orgoth freed himself and the Shadow finally got targetable. He would chuckle at @ChaseR and nod “Aye, I’ll fight for now and let’s see what he’ll do against us!” he said and rushed into the battle. With a swift movement, Macradon crashed into the dapper shadow with his sword, cleaving a small wound into the being. He would click his tongue and withdraw shortly “My damage ain’t cutting, gotta let the damage dealers do their job, perhaps I’ll just stand back and howl again.” he thought for himself and prepared a howl.

Finally, this is it. Baldur was beginning to feel a bit of wariness. The the kind he would get from physically exhausting himself in a fight, but from being "on" for so long. This battle was a marathon, and while he had fought longer fights, he was more keyed into this fight because of the danger. Fights like the Forgotten Time King weren't dangerous to him. Orgoth had almost put a few frontliners in the ground until they had gotten their momentum going.

Though Baldur knew this was a game, he was still impressed by the sight of the Shadow flinging the giant minotaur they had fought so hard against, like he was some kind of doll. It was effectively a mini cut-scene, and so it didn't give weight to Baldur any more than other fiction, but he was so caught in the moment and the gravity of it all, that it did have an affect on him.

"@Shield, my Sharpen is out after this. I should be good on energy for now, but I'll probably need some help after a few more sword arts. I have a feeling this fight against the Shadow is going to be a long one."

Baldur had been ready for this though. The fight they hadn't been ready for before, but were ready for now.

Baldur sheathed his sword as his eyes locked onto the Shadow, the dark red almost black cursor appearing above the creatures head, no longer stating it was an immortal object.

"This is for making my use my first combat teleport crystal."

The gaijin samurai crouched down, and then flickered after images of his quick movements struck the shadow from every dimension as the form of Baldur drew the sword and launched through the air at the Shadow. All the images faded at the same time, as Baldur slid to a stop on the other side of the shadow, his blade leaving an image of the night sky cutting straight through the creature.

It's health went down.

Excellent.

As soon as the vanguard was set, Freyd lunged forward, leaping across the battlefield with single-minded purpose.  A look was spared and exchanged for wanderer who valiantly stepped forth to assume the mantle at the forefront.  He was a rare and uncharacteristically generous man, though few fully understood or appreciated the measure of his contributions.

"Don't die, Raidou!" Freyd yelled as he ran past him

It was a selfish statement.  No one would know why, and he was content to leave it that way.  Macradon and Baldur were already engaged, and so was blue boi on the far side, griping as usual.  The words were forgotten before they registered, as Freyd focused on his footing. It would be nice not to fall flat on his face at the outset of battle, for a change.

There were no motivational words or speeches, as these were things best left to those adept at such things.  His role was merely to make a hole and wreak havoc until breath failed him, or the enemy was felled.  Life no longer held any other meaning or purpose, save to bring an end to Shadow.  Racing low to the ground with his void blade trailing behind him, he wasn't even sure if the weapon would work on such a being.

Only one way to find out.

With so many fighters on the field, and a virtual, shifting web of darkness dancing around their common target, the only option was a series of quick passing strikes.  Timing his slot in queue just after the others, Freyd slid to the left of his prey, dashing below a piercing tendrils and slashing upward to deal the boss a glancing blow.  It was enough to register a satisfied smirk on the Whisper's face.  The would-be god was not invulnerable.

What chorus only grew louder once Shadow's health gauge shifted into view. Emptiness between the thin outlines of grey were filled with green, and the noise--

She'd bolted ahead before hear ears could register anyone's speech. Unto darkness, her footsteps fell; what images of her figure cast onto virtual floor were erased in a matter of seconds, the array of incoherent shapes dissipating just as her physical form did, giving into the void's hold. NIGHT only came to realization only further down the room, one of the first strikers to have blasted the floor boss with a whirl. The drop of a crystal from her leaping height gave voice to her initiation, a brief clatter of metal clicking as it hit the ground, before its descent was followed by a muted tumble.

The stain of tar was unnoticeable upon the figure's appearance. NIGHT pulled herself upwards, eyes kept tied to the markers upon its interface display, waiting for the signs of success with seething, bated breath.
