Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #21 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) There, that was one more down. Considering that the room had started out with six of them, and it was now down to two, it had to become easier to dodge their attacks. Right? Wrong. They were still pelting him with their pitiful little magic spitballs. Again and again and again. Revolting. Bahr's poor jacket was covered in the gooey concoctions by now, and it wasn't exactly like there was a dry cleaners in Aincrad. The closest thing to it was a tailor, which Bahr was. But the thing is, he knew the technique necessary to get things like this out. It wasn't pleasant. It was time consuming, and boring, and regrettable. And now he needed to do it when he got home. The nymph colony would pay for this transgression. If it was the last thing he did, Bahr would dismantle their disgusting hive and scatter their contents to the wind. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #22 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) He hit them. They hit him. Still, somehow, they survived. Still, somehow, they landed a hit against him. All of that evasion investment had been for nothing. Clearly Bahr had selected the wrong talents to dump his time into. Evasion? Why had he opted to go with that? Clearly, it didn't work. As uncomfortable as he found typical armor to be, it probably had its place for a reason. It was, after all, an inclination to rely on evasion that had almost gotten Lessa killed on their first outing together. And while Bahr didn't suspect he faced any true chance of dying here, he was still mildly perturbed by the fact that the hadn't managed to go a single combat rotation against them without suffering any damage. That was practically unheard of. He'd killed swaths of the damn things only a few days before without suffering any damage at all! Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #23 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) With one more half hearted swing, the Omega Nymphs were destroyed, and Bahr was left alone in the chamber. Okay, so perhaps he had been just a tad dramating in thinking that his build had been the wrong choice. But he thought about is sometimes, y'know? It was hard to keep himself from wondering if the grass was greener on the other side. Lessa, his own girlfriend, sported the same weapon as he but still opted for heavy armor instead of light. He hadn't even see her wear the cape he made her since that one fateful day. Perhaps that was all of the evidence he needed. He'd even been thinking about changing weapon types lately. The Forgotten King's Spite he'd received had been a one-handed straight sword. Why? He had never used them before. Come to think of it, he'd never used any weapon type other than two-handed straight sword. Was he missing out? Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #24 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Perhaps it was something he would play around with after the current floor had been cleared. His original goal was to head out onto the twenty sixth floor and immediately start sniffing around for the labyrinth, but maybe it would be better to take a little bit to become acquainted with the other weapon types, armor types, skills, and all of their strengths and weaknesses. Bahr was finally at a point in his career where he could afford to slow down and really pay attention to the minutiae of the system. He no longer needed to simply rush, rush, rush. He'd done that. He'd gotten where he was going. And now, he was struck with an overwhelming sense of 'hurry up and wait.' Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #25 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) That may have been why he was returning to his roots as vehemently as he was. The Bahr that rushed through several quests a day and then tackled dungeons after the fact was a version he'd long passed. He felt as though, by coming here, he had reconnected with some old part of himself that lay dormant. A part of himself necessary to advance with the rest of the Frontliners in a way that made his mark. A rage that he'd failed to tap into for quite some time. Because of the neglect, it was congealed and rotten. This was his way of cleaning house and restoring the well of his true power to its former glory. The only aspect that was missing was the self discovery. The continual improvement. The striving for something better. He had all of the equipment he could ever need, plenty of col and materials, practically all of the skills he could ever hope for. There was no sense of advancement. Perhaps, to get that, he would need to look inward. Look for something else, something outside of the box that he hadn't considered before. The question was, what was it that Bahr was truly capable of. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #26 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Bahr stuffed the thoughts into the deepest, darkest trenches of his unconscious as he rounded the corner and came face to face with his next opponents. Nymphs. More nymphs. But these ones were interesting. They had... glasses. In fact, they looked pretty scrawny, too. It wasn't that nymphs were particularly brawny creatures to begin with, but these ones seemed to be particularly... frail. Strange. But as he ripped Dawn's Demise through the pair, he came to realize that they were not what they seemed. Though it was a direct hit to both, it didn't chunk off nearly as much of their health as he had been anticipating. It seemed that these ones were, perhaps, a special variant. Were they protected by magic that made them take less damage? If that were the case, was it possible that they had more powerful spells than the spitballs that Bahr had become so accustomed to at this point? There was only one way to find out for sure. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #27 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Even their shrieks were different. In spite of their nerdy appearance, their voices were low, gruff, and animalistic. Akin more to demonic forces than typical nymphs. Even though they didn't look the part, Bahr got the sense that they were far more sinister than the nymphs he had encountered before. More durable, more powerful, and more intimidating. Which was an odd prospect to consider, especially being how small they were. Still, Bahr felt the need to be cautious. In accordance with these concerns, he didn't waste any time charging up another Calamity Disaster and unleashing it upon the duo before they could formulate a counter attack. They were both sitting at roughly a third of their original health points now, with one having a little more than the other. Good hits would bring liberation on the next swing, but poor hits or misses would spell possible disaster for Bahr. He really, really needed to focus and make sure he hit his mark. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #28 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) But, of course, it was only when Bahr really sat down and tried to commit to hitting that he would miss. When he brought the blade forward, the nymph with a larger health pool managed to predict the swing and flitter back just in tip to avoid getting caught by the tip of the blade. The other nymph, however, wasn't so fortunate. Perhaps it was less experienced than its brother, who had had the good sense to get out of the way. That may have been why it had less health in the first place. At any rate, it didn't need to consider the ramifications of this any longer. It no longer even needed to exist. Bahr was starting to feel like this may have been a trap. How was it that they were so durable, so menacing, but hadn't fought back yet? One of them had even died before casting a spell. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #29 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) That was a definite possibility, but that didn't mean that Bahr could afford to let up the pressure. The sooner he got these annoying little giblets out of the way, the sooner he could make his way into the prize chamber and fight the boss of this strange palace. If a few nerds wanted to stand in his way, then he would need to take care of them. Trap or no. And it would be like a couple of nerds to set up a trap rather than fight Bahr directly. It was in their nature. With all of the might he could muster, and bolstered by the essence of Fallen that snaked across Dawn's Demise, Bahr let loose the most powerful strike he possibly could. It made a direct hit, and by the time the smoke settled, it revealed that the thing was still alive. Hanging by a thread of a thread, but still alive nonetheless. It seemed that, out of the two of them, it was no exaggeration that this was the stronger. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #30 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) That didn't matter anymore, though. The thing about the higher Sword Arts was that they were more difficult to control in comparison to the earlier ones. Though Bahr had his blunders at the very beginning, he'd largely straightened up and managed to use his lower Sword Arts with proper utility after he had been fighting for a few days. But despite having been using his higher Sword Arts longer, they were still more difficult to control. So when it came to using the lowest Sword Art Bahr had access to, there was no chance of failure. He rocketed forth and impaled his blade through the creature and brought it along with him until he'd had it nailed to the wall. A moment later, it evaporated into polygonal mist, and a loot panel populated in front of Bahr. Despite being harder mobs in comparison to the first chamber, it seemed that quantity over quality was the way to go for nymphs. The more of them there were, the more trouble he had with them. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #31 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Being that the end was now in sight, Bahr didn't waste any time waiting for his energy to recover. He was confident that he could take on whatever was around the corner, in the final chamber, without needing to stop. The Nerd Nymphs hadn't really slowed him down at all, so he felt compelled to carry the momentum on to the end. If he slowed down, and went into that room without any sort of forward momentum, it could be more detrimental than waiting. So he ran and ran, until... "What the fuck." It was a nymph, alright. The title read "King Nymph." But it was actually a man. Like, just an ordinary man. He didn't have wings or anything like that. Just a suit of armor and a one-handed straight sword. King Nymph? So, what? Was he getting some "Queen Nymph" somewhere pregnant? Were all of the mobs Bahr had slaughtered for the past few days his demented progeny? Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #32 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Bahr was so disgusted by the implications of this discover that he didn't even realize at first that the King Nymph was waggling his brow at the him. A suggestive wiggle, as though meant to be alluring to Bahr, and lead him to the fancy bed that was conveniently placed in the corner of the room. Why were all dungeon bosses like this? Why were they all some sort of cruel joke? Bahr would never understand. "More like 'King Nympho,'" Bahr taunted as he readied Dawn's Demise. "With you gone, the kingdom will fall. I can free this floor of its nymph related strife. They don't call me the Kingslayer for nothing." Bahr shot forward and buried the blade into the man's chest in the blink of an eye. The armor that protected him had failed instantly, and a quarter of his health bar fell off without hesitation. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #33 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) It seemed that the King Nymph didn't take too kingly to Bahr's taunting, because the moment Dawn's Demise was relinquished from his chest, he counter attacked. Bahr did his best to block the sword with his own in an attempt to mitigate the damage, but it was so lightning quick that there was only so much that he could do. Even the glancing blow that the man managed to inflict was enough to drop a significant chunk of Bahr's health, which was cause for alarm. He was a lot stronger than he looked. "Guess it will be a good duel, then," Bahr admitted as he took a couple steps back to create distance. He was now brutally aware of the fact that he would need to play his cards right and take all of the proper precautions to mitigate damage as much as possible. Until Parry was available again, he was going to be playing a risky game of cat and mouse. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #34 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) The good news was that Justified Riposte had allowed Bahr the breathing room that he needed to assess the situation. The man was surprisingly limber for how much armor he was wearing, and his strikes were precise, quick, and powerful. He was, for all intents and purposes, a worthy adversary. Not exactly a surprise, considering dungeons like this were always meant to be traversed with a party as opposed to solo. But Bahr knew that he could beat the asshole. He needed to put an end to the nymph tyranny that was plaguing the floor. He stepped forward and took a cautious strike, this time more so meant to gauge his opponent's reaction than to actually tick up damage. It did a decent amount, and the Nymph King predictably took a step back after the damage had been delivered to ready himself for a counter attack. It seemed that using his range and keeping his distance would be the key for Bahr winning the fight. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #35 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Seeing as the last attack had worked so well, Bahr decided it might be the best course of action to replicate it throughout the fight. Use his superior range to keep the King Nymph at bay, chip little bits of damage off at a time, and walk away the victor. It seemed to make perfect sense, and was easily the safest way to conduct the battle. But it seemed that the AI was better than most mobs, and that it had already caught on to Bahr's little trick. Bahr inflicted a small dose of damage, just as he had the turn before, but the King Nymph stepped into the attack this time and ate the damage while closing the distance between the two entities. In a flash, a major chunk of Bahr's health was ripped away, and he was left with only three quarters of his health left. He hadn't imagined that this mob was capable of such damage, but the strange thing was that it didn't even seem like it was putting its all into it. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #36 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) Bahr knew that something needed to happen that tilted the scale in his favor. He still had a single Lullaby crystal left - something that had the potential to slow his opponent down so he couldn't be so quick to dodge or counter attack. It was a long shot, but Bahr was willing to see if it offered any sort of benefit. So he deployed it and dashed forward, allowing the song to fill the otherwise silent chamber as Bahr made his way to his opponent. It seemed to work. It distracted the hooligan just long enough for Bahr to get an attack in and back off before the King's sword found its way across his chest. It was only narrowly that he managed to avoid the attack, but it was enough to convince Bahr that his plan had worked. With any luck, he could now avoid damage long enough to finish his opponent off. The numbness from the King Nymph's earlier strike was starting to wane as battle Healing patched up the wound, and Bahr was making steady progress on his opponent's health bar. He was still using his reach and focusing on creating distance between the two of them as opposed to focusing on high damage swings. The technique was one that Bahr typically didn't feel the need to use, but he was pleased with the results. One or two more attacks, and King Nymph was history. That didn't mean the mob was happy about it. He was continually becoming more erratic and frustrated as a result. Bahr feared that, if he had a trick up his sleeve like a trap or high damaging move, Bahr would be seeing it any turn now. He just needed to keep his wits about him and a wide eye open. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #38 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) With it being at the health it was at, Bahr was prepared to take a gamble. Go all in with the hopes that it would be enough to destroy this deranged pixie fucker for good, and restore health and balance to the land of Aincrad's twenty second floor. If he didn't manage to kill, there was a chance that he could take a big deal of damage as a consequence. But he was so convinced in his survivability, and so convinced in his ability to destroy this goon if he really put some effort into it, that he went for it anyways. And it worked. King Nymph was destroyed, leaving behind nothing but some lackluster loot and a decent helping of col. Not long after he was defeated, a dungeon completion panel populated in front of Bahr and revealed his spoils. Nothing too grandiose or amazing, but enough to have made the trip worthwhile. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #39 Share Posted October 31, 2020 Seeing as this dungeon for some reason didn't have a back door that let him out, Bahr had to walk back the way that he came. As his footsteps echoed through the halls, his mind once again returned to the quandary he had considered earlier. Was it worth looking at alternative means of weaponry and armor? The worst that would happen is he would discover he didn't like it and simply switch back to his old gear. He even had a handy dandy one-handed straight sword or two lying around that would allow him to take advantage of the swap without having to degrade into near-useless weaponry. It was something worth considering, but he honestly didn't even know where to start. Perhaps it would be best to consult with some of his peers and ask them what they liked and disliked about each of their kits, then come to a decision based off of that. Bahr 0 Posted October 31, 2020 Author #40 Share Posted October 31, 2020 Yeah, that seemed to be approach that made the most sense. Unfortunately, it would have to wait until after the boss battle. Everything that he had done had led him to this moment, where he had only a few hours left to make some last minute decisions about his build and hope that they were the right ones for the raid. He didn't have the time to completely switch his build over - for the time being, he was stuck with what he had. Which wasn't a bad thing, necessarily. It was comfortable and familiar. He knew his limits, and knew exactly what he needed to do to get the best results. It was just that any tweaks or build makeovers would need to wait until he was on the twenty sixth floor. He just needed to be patient. Finally, he emerged from the dungeon and found himself back out on the twenty second floor. All that was left was to return home, make some last minute adjustments to his skills, and get whatever sleep his body would allow him in preparation for the raid. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - QUEST COMPLETE Thread net gains: 12 SP 82758 col (26) T3 Materials [T3 - Perfect OHSS] Abs.
