ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 #1 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) <<Arabian Nights: Second Night>> Now that Chase happened to be on a roll, he wanted to see if he could get all of this quest line out of the way. He eyed the second line, as was proper in the right order, scratching the back of his head and going on to move straight to the seventh floor. As soon as he was there, he looked around and just squinted his eyes awkwardly. "I thought Arabian settings implied a little bit more sand... I'm pleasantly surprised. Fuck sand, and fuck the fifth.", he recited inside of his head, heading on to the nearest tavern- the Drunken Crane. Ali had sent him a message shortly after finishing the previous quest, one that he just noticed, to meet him there- and so he did. Sitting down next to him, Ali gave him a cocked eyebrow and began getting straight to the point- an NPC that didn't dillydally for once wasn't that bad though, was it? "Have you heard, ChaseR? The bandits are said to have taken control of some legendary beast, a... a mix between a scorpion and a lion? It has the tail of a scorpion, wings of a dragon and body of a lion- can you believe that? It's been captured on the other side of the mountain, Nimbus.", he began his introduction to the quest, only to get a small sigh from the boy. He knew where this was going, for sure he did. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #2 Share Posted November 19, 2020 Despite the fact that he knew he could trust Ali though, Chase, having completely forgotten this was scripted and just going with the flow, looked at him in slight disbelief. Sure, they were in a virtual world where everything seemed to be possible, but that sort of a combination sounded freakishly grotesque and horrifying. He couldn't even begin to imagine seeing something like that. "Since the last time you wanted me to kill some bandits and get Cassin back, let me guess.", he started, only to get interrupted by Ali who gave him a wink and chuckled after boasting about the adventurer's strength. "You got it right already, go kill that little beast right up the mountain! You're strong enough to do that, aren't you? Just look at how amazing a job you did with the bandits, there's no way some small fry like that can hold you down, is there?", Ali continued, begging for looks from Chase that were more than unsavory. However, here came the fact that Chase was incredibly overleveled and proficient in fighting. He would have no issue whatsoever, giving him a nod and getting on his feet. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #3 Share Posted November 19, 2020 The beast definitely didn't sound little, and knowing that the bandits were there would make things just a little bit more tedious. There was nothing holding Chase back from going all out and ripping every single thing there apart though. After all, they were criminals and to have a beast in control was no good. The destruction and suffering that they would cause... "Of course. I'll be back after I kill it then.", the boy happily stated and jumped onto his feet, ready to get moving before he heard Ali shout at him from behind; "Hold up, ChaseR!". If anything, the shout made him stop as he turned to look over his shoulder and saw Ali all agitated and with an awkward smile on his face. "Can you... bring something back from the monster? Some proof it exists?". Ah, so that's what it was about. As if the cave of riches wasn't enough, he wanted a bit of this too? As long as that would help improve his quality of life, then "Sure. I'll bring you some tuft of its fur or scale, whatever it has. I'll see what I can do Ali, rest easy. I won't take too long.", he finished off and with that exited the tavern, taking a breath of fresh air and looking around silently. [Talking with Ali in tavern. 3/5]
ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #4 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) With nobody to hold him back and no companions to speak of, that meant Chase could start his trek to the other side of Nimbus almost right away. And that is exactly what he did. He walked silently with his sword hoisted to his side if anything, holding his jacket up to cover his mouth as he stayed in his snug little tracksuit. Before long, he was already there- maybe half an hour or so later- and he could already see a small crowd patrolling left and right. That meant the beast must be somewhere near here. He moved in quickly to engage them, knowing that three wouldn't be anything to worry about. As soon as he held his sword out to the side though, it seemed to be having a good day, judging by the holy effect kicking in almost instantly. He gripped it with both hands and slashed widely at the bunch, leaving nothing behind but the blue shards that used to be their body, all scattering in the air. A quick, clean strike. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) With the bandits cleared, that only left the cave where the beast resided to be found. Well... cave was a good assumption, but not close enough. Looking around, Chase seemed to be getting almost nowhere. It was only when he saw that there was a cliff and went to its edge, that he noticed there was a small canyon down below- and something he couldn't even begin to describe at the very bottom. So that's what he was after, huh? He began to quietly go down the cliffside with his sword out in case anything else tried to attack him while he slid all the way to the bottom, eventually finding his path all the way to canyon where... the beast Ali had described, stood right before him. Oh, for crying out loud, what was up with this ugly bastard?! "Kayaba sure felt inspired when he was making this quest line, oh boy... I wonder what other horror awaits me in the last quest..." ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) This grotesque creature had... the face of a human, the teeth of a shark, the body of a lion, the wings of a dragon- or bat, depending on what you wanted to see-, and the tail of a damn scorpion. Whoever was vile enough to think of this monster, named it something unfamiliar too- Manticore? Chase eyed the tag on the HUD before lowering his eyes to meet the monster's gaze once more. So that's what it was, huh? "Very well then. Let's go.", he muttered before dashing right at the monster, holding his blade out to the side and preparing to launch a powerful attack at the monster. However, despite his best efforts, the beast retaliated as soon as he managed to get a clean slash at its neck. It opened its mouth and threw out two fiery storms of death, both combining into a larger one before hitting Chase. No matter how much he tried to block them with his sword and arms, nothing. It still landed a clean strike as ever, managing to hit the boy somewhat and mostly burning him. That was the only real damage he would take. Spoiler ChaseR uses Galaxy Destroyer! ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #7 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) The beast wasn't strong enough to truly hurt him, but it could definitely deal a lot of damage if anything. He grunted and clenched his fists tightly around the hilt of his blade, running at it once again to slash. However this time, it seemed to be charging up another volley of fire. The moment his eyes saw the flames forming, he switched his target to a small rock down on the ground. With his stone sword, he swung as powerfully as he could at the rock, making it shatter right before the monster's attack launched, blinding it with dusts and small fragments flying right in its face, poking at one of its eyes. Despite its agility, it failed to dodge the blinding strike and as a result only landed a single one of its hits, the same searing sensation spreading all over the tiny wound it created on Chase's skin as he glared at it sharply. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #8 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) As soon as Chase tried to move in to assault the beast's exposed head, now right next to it, it opened its mouth and clamped at the blade with its sharp teeth, glaring right back at him. If anything, it was almost like it was trying to tell him that he was the annoyance. Before he could even pull his own blade out and hope to wound the Manticore's mouth in the process, Chase was clawed at from the lion's front right paw, managing to deal a small damage to him and refreshing that pesky burn effect. It was good to know he wasn't overpowered this time around, and if anything, the monster was just stalling its inevitable demise. What was it hoping for- more bandits to show up out of nowhere, or did it expect to get stronger or to drive Chase to exhaustion? Neither was happening, and it most definitely didn't have more than a few more attacks to survive. Spoiler ChaseR uses Galaxy Destroyer! (BD: 1) ATTACK MISSED Manticore attacks ChaseR! ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #9 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) And then Chase began to feel it. The sword was starting to respond to him, and that just caused him to smile. He knew that the monster would regret keeping its mouth around the blade for this long, if any at all. Suddenly, wisps of light began to form all around the sword, turning into a mysterious fog that began to gather inside of the Manticore's mouth. "You should have known better than to put a weapon in your mouth.", he said and moved both hands to grip the sword before the bright white flash, as per usual, emerged. And with it, came the rest of the blade, cutting right threw its upper jaw and slicing the left one almost off. Of course, the monster was blinded too, while Chase took a few steps back and whipped the blade to the side, preparing for another hit with an eyebrow cocked up. "You're almost dead already, that's a lot of health.", he muttered to himself, looking over his shoulder towards the direction of the settlement (behind the mountain of course) and turning back to the Manticore. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #10 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) Needless to say, seeing how close the monster was to dying didn't do much for Chase but a single thing- it made him get overconfident and cockier. Knowing that the monster could and would die with ease, he let his guard down; and that was the big mistake that he made. Well... not really big. When he wasn't looking, the Manticore got on its feet and quickly dashed at him, letting out a fiery breath right at his face and stabbing him with the tip of its tail. Chase wasn't able to react fast enough, but jumping back he at least managed to open the gap between the two once more. If the monster was any stronger, or Chase any weaker, this might have been a predicament. But his battle healing could easily shake this off without an issue, and the burn was nothing to care that much about. "G-Good job me, cut the monster more slack... I should stop fucking around." ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) Despite trying to get more serious, the Manticore wouldn't let up with its attacks at all. That wasn't necessarily bad though, it was hellbent on taking Chase down and that's what he'd use to take it down. He held the sword towards it, watching it charge right at him with everything it had. And here went nothing- Quite literally nothing. The monster stopped right before Chase, with its eyes opened wide as the sword ran right through its head. It should have done more than just tried to charge him down and do nothing else at all. As the bluehead pulled his weapon back, a small loot window popped up to inform him that he got a Manticore Mask out of the encounter, some light armor that served as proof of the monster's existence. Now, despite the unique 'Flame Aura' enhancement on it, a deal was a deal. And a deal he had made with Ali, after all. Spoiler ChaseR uses Galaxy Destroyer! ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #12 Share Posted November 19, 2020 Almost predictably enough, the moment he turned around he started to hear distressed shouting headed his way- like hell they wouldn't notice the exact moment he finished the job. They were too late to stop him or even try, but even so, a duo of bandits drew to a halt right before the man, looking to take him down after all. Chase quietly scratched the back of his head, glaring at the two in case they would move away. Nada. Nothing. "It's been killed, if you want to take me down, three of you already failed. Two won't succeed where three didn't.", he tried to warn them with a small frown and gave them a look from the corner of his eyes, hoping they'd make the sounder choice here. And... no, of course they wouldn't. The burn faded away from him as he saw the bandits pull out small curved knives, holding them right towards the blueberry. "Alright. I see how it is.", he huffed and looked at the two, pointing his sword at them silently as the stare-down began. It takes away from any immersion, man.", he complained in the back of his mind, starting his way back on to the path that led over to the tavern where Ali was waiting for news of his misadventures, alongside the mask from the manticore to prove it existed. If anything, he knew that Ali's intel was good now. Not that he had doubts in the first place, it was a quest in his log after all. Spoiler ChaseR uses Calamity Disaster on Senior Thief 4 & 5! ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #14 Share Posted November 19, 2020 No matter what Chase did and didn't want, one thing was true. As of now, the quest had been finished. All he had to do was return to the settlement on the other side of Nimbus, talk to Ali and then the rewards were his. He was starting to get curious already what he would have to do for the next quest. The first was a rescue mission, the second one an extermination, so the third one would be..? "Although I don't mind any quests in particular, aside from the ones in the desert... These quests have really been a hefty bunch, huh? They aren't as tedious as the rest and have you interact with some NPCs more than just 'ha, do this, go there, get that'. I think I like this style more than the one Kayaba stuck to for all the rest, where I just killed some big big bad for extra loot. It's a very nice change of pace, but... it still started down in the fifth floor, bleh.", his inner rambling started and ended as soon as he began his long way around the mountain to not waste much more time. He'd still take a fair few minutes before he managed to make it all the way back to Ali, but still, this was the shortest route he could take.
ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #15 Share Posted November 19, 2020 While making his way over around the mountain, something in a small grove by the mountain's base caught his attention, two or three small rabbits, playing alongside one another. Hopping left and right, the Ragout Rabbits as they were called played with one another, tackling one down and starting to squeak lowly before going back to chasing one another on the grass. "... It's not really fair to call them all monsters, is it?", he thought to himself as he came to a stop, watching the rabbits play with one another until they decided to take their little game of huddle and cuddle tag to further on inside the little grove. Probably their home too, which was just sweeter to think about. Although it wasn't as if this was absolutely necessary, he was definitely happy about this tiny minute-long break that he had just gotten. It felt like a lot of weight had been lifted off of his chest and he had a clear conscience again- not that he had guilts about killing the five bandits that threw themselves at him, or the beast who seemed hellbent on slaughtering anything it had right before its eyes. ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #16 Share Posted November 19, 2020 It was more so that he just didn't feel too good about humanoid NPCs running at him the same way as monsters, let alone being labelled as such when they were clearly humans, just ones controlled by the system. Anything non-hostile was an NPC, anything hostile usually a human. Not too good a look for Cardinal, that was for sure. And now that that was over, Chase was right back on track to get back to the settlement, keeping a steady and brisk pace as ever. He walked on and on, staying silent with both of his hands stuck in his pockets, seeing the small town with the tavern near the gates in the near distance. He looked around to get a good look at the mountain's base before entering it, starting to head right for the Drunken Crane with no second thoughts. He had the mask in his inventory, ready to take it out and present it to Ali within a moment's notice.
ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted November 19, 2020 And with a deep breath, he entered the tavern again and looked around to see the same people. This he had never noticed but did the NPCs never move positions any..? Just staying in a tavern, drinking or eating for hours on end- nah, a lot seemed to be discussing. With the rain of cursors left and right, he knew little about whoever was a player and who was an NPC. It was honestly too much for him to bother either way. The yellow cursor above Ali's head was enough of an indicator about what he needed to do, if the whole looks weren't. Needless to say, the older man waited for him at the table with a cocked eyebrow, ready to hear what happened of the beast. Right now, Chase knew all too well that a lot of people would get greedy and keep the mask- it was a unique item, but at what cost? He was already certain that somebody he had met bore one of these items. And one that had left a particular distaste in the bluehead too.
ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #18 Share Posted November 19, 2020 That's not what Chase was going to do though. Chase definitely appreciated Ali and the SP was enough of a reward to him. If he needed anything else, he was certain he could work hard enough and get it on his own. There was no reason to lie to anybody or try to deceive others- hell, he was sure that somebody could just never go out there and tell him the beast existed all the same. The mere idea of doing something like that went against his moral codes, but before he could keep delving into his thoughts a while longer, he was stopped and snapped back to reality almost instantly by Ali clapping his hands and looking at him. "ChaseR? ChaseR? Is everything alright? What of the beast, can you tell me? Did you find it and take care of it?". Of course, he still had to deliver the item and not just creepily stand over the table with a glare at the nearest wall. That had attracted a lot of looks, a situation awkward enough for him already, but... He coughed to clear his throat and sat down, looking at Ali and sifting through his inventory before pulling the mask out and letting it form in his hands. "Here you go." ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #19 Share Posted November 19, 2020 Ali took the mask from the man's hands, looking at it almost bewildered as he raised an eyebrow and moved it here and there, checking it all too curiously from the back and front. He certainly didn't seem to be expecting a piece of armor to drop from a beast, especially when Chase had promised he'd bring back some fur or a scale. The boy just picked up that's not what he had to do- if the item was a drop, that was the drop. "I don't understand... What is this? Was the beast not a lion with the wings of a dragon and the tail of a sc-", Ali started questioning before getting interrupted by Chase smiling and patting his hoisted sword by his waist. "No, it was, it was. I just took care of it and that's all it left behind. It could burn real well, but that's about the extent of all it managed to do to me. This is what it left behind though- I failed to get fur or anything else out of it. I hope you're alright with that.", he humbly responded as his smile faltered, only before he noticed Ali's reaction. He was ecstatic, if anything, even happier that he managed to get a whole piece of armor out of such a beast- a complete rumor that he didn't seem to expect much out of. "No, this is fantastic! To think that you offered me even a piece of armor... Many others would lie, adventurer. But you still sacrificed such a strong piece to stay honest with me... I appreciate that. Your courage is something I can definitely appreciate. Thank you." [Talking with Ali in tavern. 5/5]
ChaseR 0 Posted November 19, 2020 Author #20 Share Posted November 19, 2020 The flattery and compliments wasn't just part of Cassin's personality then. Speaking of which, where even was the younger brother? Bleh, no matter. Chase just smiled at the older man and gave him a thumbs up, knowing fully well that the rewards were more than enough. "If you have anything else you need me to take care of Ali, let me know. I'm always up for more quests if they help you out, as long as I don't put myself in too much danger too. I still have people I want to protect, and I have to be alive to do that.", he explained to the NPC, who seemed to agree in full judging by the absolutely furious nodding from him. "Most definitely. I will inform you if something else comes up, ChaseR! Thank you once more, you have done me a great favor during a time of need too... I'm sure you saved everybody a lot of trouble by taking care of the Manticore. Thank you.", he repeated himself one last time as he got up, shaking the man's hand and beginning to head out of the tavern once they'd properly greeted one another. "Until next time then, young man!" Staff LD Roll: ID#178270 Spoiler Thread Rewards: 5 SP (3 quest, 1 page, 1 event) 8,400 Col
